Matthew Paul Turner is on Reading With Your Kids to celebrate his children's book "You Will Always Belong." He explained that the book encourages children to feel a sense of self-acceptance and belonging. Matthew emphasized that loving oneself is important for truly loving and accepting others. He discussed previously feeling called to provide his own children with a healthy introduction to God through children's literature. Matthew shared his experience finishing a deceased friend's unfinished books, saying it helped with the grieving process. He found it powerful when a pastor later told him one of his books brought comfort to a woman in her final days. The conversation touched on themes of community, self-doubt and God's message of not being afraid. Matthew hopes "You Will Always Belong" will help children feel seen and empowered in their own belonging. Jed Doherty recommended supporting Matthew's work and reflecting on fostering belonging in the face of life's uncertainties. The discussion provided thoughtful insights into faith, mental health and using children's stories to start meaningful family discussions. You don't have to look far or listen long to know why we need to teach our kids empathy. Basic kindness seems to be harder and harder to find, and if you're like me, you are deeply motivated to encourage your kids to be better. To be more inclusive, to be kinder, to be different than what we're surrounded by. And that is why my friend, Matthew Paul Turner, is here today to talk with me about specific children's books that help us do just that. Matthew is a children's author himself; he's written some of my family's favorites like When God Made You, When I Pray for You, and What Is God Like. So what I'm saying here is that he's an expert. And, as you'll hear, he's genuinely dedicated to teaching his kids about the wonder and beauty of all people and the importance of showing each of them kindness and love. Of course, because this is The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome, we also discuss game shows and Netflix shows about teen ghosts that may include a whole lot of cursing. It's almost time to get started, but one more quick note: Thank you to everyone who has already purchased my new book, Prayers from the Parking Lot! I am so grateful and I'm also hopeful it's an encouragement to you and the moms you know. And to those of you who not only bought the book but then shared it on social media? Episode 68 Matthew Paul TurnerWe've been hearing a LOT about deconstruction the last few years, even featuring episodes about the topic here and there on this podcast. But what comes AFTER deconstruction? The answer will of course be different for each person. Matthew Paul Turner– a forerunner of the current deconstruction movement by over a decade– has found an answer that suits him well, and might work for many others: telling better stories. Specifically in the form of picture books. His work in this particular genre began with When God Made You, and since then he has published many more, including What is God Like?, When I Pray For You, and his most recent book, I Am God's Dream.https://matthewpaulturner.com/https://matthewpaulturner.com/category/jesus-needs-new-pr/Our broad ranging discussion covers a LOT of ground, including: How the campaign of George W. Bush gave him a spiritual orgasm with the catchy phrase “compassionate conservatism,” but eventually left him empty, especially in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (which Matthew notes as the deconstruction starting point for him) “I no longer wanted my theology to be against people.”How he started first critiquing what was wrong with his Evangelical subculture in his classic blog, “Jesus Needs New PR.” The path led him to start writing children's books, because he was “looking for words to read over their kids” that weren't destructive of left his children thinking God was a monster. How “children's literature” is a misnomer, and his preference for the term “picture books”, which enable others to see the spiritual life anew. The importance of representing all people in his books, and having a girl of color , first Illustrated by David Catrow, provide a powerful way forward by be the stand in for us all in his books.About his latest book I Am God's Dream being written during hard times, and includes that reality in the pages– but is ultimately driven by hope and joy. Matthew shares withs us a little about how he finds joy.AND MUCH MORE

Children who are introduced to God, through attending church or having loved ones who speak about God, often have a lot of questions, including this ever-popular one: What is God like? The late Rachel Held Evans loved the Bible and loved showing God's love through the words and pictures found in that ancient text. Through these pictures from the Bible, children see that God is like a shepherd, God is like a star, God is like a gardener, God is like the wind, and more. God is a comforter and support. And whenever a child is unsure, What Is God Like? encourages young hearts to “think about what makes you feel safe, what makes you feel loved, and what makes you feel brave. That's what God is like.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/avant-garde-books/support

One of my favorite people, Hillary McBride, recently posted this on Twitter: “Spiritual trauma is someone handing you an inner critic and telling you it's the voice of God.” I love that quote because it paints the picture of religious trauma so well. Trauma doesn't always have to involve one disastrous event; it can be the result of the script we were given in childhood that stuck with us. Matthew Paul Turner is a children's author who does amazing work towards reversing that harmful script. He is trying to put a better story into the hearts and minds of children, specifically using the language and vocabulary of God. Matthew is joining us on this episode of Parenting Forward to discuss some of his best-selling books. We also talk about how parents can give their kids a better script. If we don't want our children to have to rewrite their scripts or “recover from God” in adulthood, we must be proactive about introducing them to God the right way now. Show Highlights: The script I was given as a child about God. The damage that harmful script does to children's brains. The gossip chain that develops in fundamental communities. Why it's so hard for us deconstructed believers to accept compliments or love ourselves. How our body holds trauma. Why Matthew didn't write evangelical books. How children's books can benefit adults too. What it was like for Matthew to write his most recent book, I Am God's Dream, right after coming out. How I Am God's Dream teaches kids to be happy with their bodies. The importance of genuine apologies. On today's episode, Meghan and Cortland chat with New York Times Bestselling Children's book author Matthew Paul Turner. In this interview Matthew shares his story of growing up in fundamentalism, discovering Sandi Patty, and starting down the slippery slope of Contemporary Christian Music. Matthew spent years working as a writer in the CCM world as well as writing several Christian books. As his faith expanded he began pushing back against the fundamentalism he grew up in advocating for a more inclusive faith. After finding an audience among the progressive faith community Matthew began writing Children's books. We know our listeners will appreciate hearing stories behind his children's book that are LGBTQ+ inclusive and create space for wonder and divinity unlike the messages so many of us received in church as kids. In 2020, after years as an ally and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community Matthew publicly came out as gay. Since coming out, Matthew and his incredibly supportive ex-wife Jessica have been a shining example of how families can support each other and embrace authenticity as they discover and embrace their truths together. Please take a minute to check out his website and pre-order his book, I Am God's Dream, that comes out this month! Also, be sure to follow him on Twitter @HeyMPT and Instagram @MatthewPaulTurner. There's little chance that we are able to discern biblical truth from the spirit of the times until our roots go deep through washing and delighting ourselves each and every day in the Word of God. Sadly, many of those called to nurture children and teens in the faith today are misleading the young by never faithfully teaching the truths of God's Word. And without a knowledge of the truth, the enemies lies are more easily believed. Even what seems like an innocent Christian children's book can put kids on a fast road away from the true Christian faith. That's why I'm chatting today with Elizabeth Urbanowicz about how to train our kids in biblical discernment, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

This week Amy and Mike talk with author Dave Connis about his new picture book, The Inventions of God (and Eva) From whirligigs to robots, children love to imagine and create. But where does all of their curiosity and innovation come from? In The Inventions of God (and Eva), Dave Connis, author and father of three tells an adorable story that shows children that their creativity is not a coincidence but is the image and imagination of God living in them. Masterfully illustrated by Amy Domingo, the book introduces little Eva, a budding engineer. Just like God, Eva loves to invent all kinds of things and make broken things new. While Eva isn't always happy with the earlier forms of her creations, God loves every version of His—including Eva! While celebrating innovation and a STEAM approach to learning, The Inventions of God (and Eva) also shines a light on God's limitless creativity, His love for His children, and what it means to be made in His image. Lively and full of heart, this one-of-a-kind picture book for readers of Matthew Paul Turner and kids ages 3-7 is sure to be treasured by families who long to instill in their children a love for and knowledge of their Creator. Dave Connis is a former librarian and the author of several YA novels, including The Temptation of Adam and Suggested Reading, recipient of a starred review from Kirkus Reviews. He lives in Georgia with his wife and three kids.
Matthew Paul Turner was raised in a religious family and has spent his career authoring books about faith. However, in this episode, Annmarie and Matthew talk about the importance of uncertainty, questions, and doubt. Matthew reminds us that doubt and belief can work together as both children and adults grow in love, faith, and understanding.
When Rachel Held Evans died, on May 4 of 2019, she left a significant m emotional and cultural void; one that was felt by her followers and readers but also one that was felt differently by those she was working alongside. See, Rachel was part of a whole tribe of persons working to establish and celebrate a new language for a generation of people of faith. In the long shadow of her passing, other members of the tribe felt a kind of witty responsibility to continue the legacy she was forging. Among those people was (and is) Matthew Paul Turner. when I met Matthew recently, he was quite literally surrounded by hundreds of copies of his most recent children's book. As a New York Times best-selling children's author, Matthew had taken on the particular and beautiful responsibility of finishing a children's book project Rachel had begun before she passed. Entitled, “What Is God Like?” the book is less an effort to answer the question precisely and more an imaginative exploration of the possibilities that question presents; possibilities that might mean that there is room in God for everyone. It is a poignant and appropriate continuation of Rachel Held Evans‘s legacy. It is also a beautiful and powerful addition to the body of work Matthew Paul Turner is releasing into the world.I truly enjoyed my conversation with Matthew and I think you will too. Check it out
We are joined by New York Times Bestselling author Matthew Paul Turner. He tells about his experience coming out as a gay man and the grief that came from living his truth. He tells us about reconciling the hurt he knew it would bring his wife, the mental undoing of damage from his religious background, and how his new book (co-authored by the now deceased Rachel Held Evans) helped him heal long before it was released. This was such a special conversation for us and we hope you enjoy it! How do you talk to your kids or loved ones about God when you feel like you don't have all the answers? When you have big questions of your own? How about when the story books and church lessons don't seem to fit with what you know about faith, and God, and Jesus? Author Matthew Paul Turner began writing children's books because he faced those same challenges in talking to his own kids about God and faith. Listen in as we hear his story, and talk about some great ways to engage discussions of faith for our kids, and even ourselves! What if we weren't afraid of questions? What if we embraced the idea that God delights in us? What if we were curious? What if we stepped into a bit of whimsey? On a personal note, our whole team and our kids have been blessed by Matthew's books. We highly recommend them! And... We say it every time, but this was such a good convo! Don't miss it. :)And don't miss Matthew's latest book: What is God Like? , co-written by the late Rachel Held Evans.Check out Matthew's other books at matthewpaulturner.comFind Matthew on social media @matthewpaulturnerSupport the show (https://uncommongoodsd.com/give)

Did you know that the Christmas season technically ends January 5th? In the church calendar, Christmas is followed by Epiphany. This day is associated with the visitation of the magi and their gifts to the Christ child. We know that this season has been quite chaotic. We saved one of our Christmas story time episodes for the transition into the Epiphany season. We hope that you join us as Dr. David Young, Chaplain of ENC, and part of his family read the story, “All the Colors of Christmas” by Matthew Paul Turner.

It's the 10th episode of Better Sects! My friend, author Matthew Paul Turner joins me today. I was introduced to Matthew several years ago when he was curating a blog called Jesus Needs New PR…it was intriguing to me to see someone unpacking their spiritual trauma and journey so candidly and publicly. Over the years, he's been able to share his poignant writing in publications such as the Washington Post, the Daily Beast, and USA Today. A couple years ago, he also joined actor Morgan Freeman as the photojournalist for the National Geographic docu-series, The Story of God. This summer, Matthew made the announcement, along with his wife, blogger Jessica, that he was gay, and they would be ending their marriage, but were forging a path to remain dear friends and co-parent their three children, even as they navigated uncharted relational waters. This episode is very emotional and raw as Matthew holds nothing back, but shares deeply from his heart about the pain and joy he's experienced, but also how writing for children, and especially his new Christmas book is allowing him to tell the stories he believes every child, and all of us need to hear. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bettersects/message

Jonah is dramatically, laughably angry about God's mercy for the Ninevites, and carries on a stompy, pouty tantrum. Often I laugh at his expense; this week I relate. We also recall that God's mercy for Nineveh follows sincere repentance and reparation of harm on the part of the powerful; and that Jesus centered his life and ministry among those at the pointy end of the State's violence. May we seek to do the same as we spread the faith. A couple of weeks ago, we wrapped up the Parenting Forward conference. Today, I’m going to air some highlights from the conference so that you can experience some of the best parts of the speakers too. It may feel hyperbolic to say the conference changed my life, but in many ways, it did. Not only were the conversations I had with the speakers so incredibly life-giving, but the experience of going live with the attendees and engaging with them more intimately reminded me powerfully of how listeners of this podcast are full, powerful human beings with families, jobs, and hobbies. Please go check out each of the speakers’ work: follow them on Twitter, buy their books, and let’s continue to be in conversation about parenting with healthy spirituality. Show Highlights: Barbara Brown Taylor shared six different ideas parents can help to re-enchant the world with our children. Next up, Casper ter Kuile shared the problem we all are facing as a culture of loneliness, and how we can begin to address it with ritual and belonging. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg talked about how we find theology and profound spirituality in the act of parenting. Lauren Duca discussed the different ways that young people have been boxed out of connection to a sense of agency. Next up, we had Danny Cortez, who talked about parenting and the patriarchy. Rev. Jacqui Lewis helped parents to tell a better story for their children. Our job is to be story weavers or to midwife a story to help a child midwife a story, to own an account, to change a story, and to be transformed. Micky Scottbey Jones discussed Enneagram and Parenting. Sometimes Enneagram spaces can feel very white and evangelical, so I appreciated having Micky’s perspective as a certified Enneagram instructor. Jessica Taft goes through five different assumptions, how to become aware of these assumptions, examine them, and disrupt them. Rachel Goble and Matthew Paul Turner talked about the ethics of telling children’s stories. Last, but certainly not least, Science Mike shared with us what it’s like to parent after faith deconstruction. Parents, we’re trying our best here. Who’d have ever thought we’d find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic, trying to help our offspring navigate a world we don’t really know how to wade through ourselves? Two of our fellow parents, blogger Jessica Turner and children’s book author Matthew Paul Turner, share how they’re managing all the moving pieces, and how they’re trying to balance structure with whimsy to keep kids on track. The Turners also give us the scoop on which tools and resources that are helping them navigate life with their three kids from pre-K to 5th grade (spoiler alert: subscription boxes are worth their weight in gold). As busy working parents, Jessica and Matthew remind us that we can put away the expectations for perfect homeschooling (scratch that, crisis schooling) or perfect anything, really, and trust that being present and hopeful in this new season will carry us through.

This week on the Beardcast we sat down with author Matthew Paul Turner and talk about his Children's books that have come out and one on the way.
Writing for children is a different kind of writing. One of the beautiful things about it is when you successfully keep things simple, you can end up reaching far beyond children. That's how it's worked for Matthew Paul Turner, a long time writer who tried writing for children as an experiment. He's now written “When God Made Light,” “When God Made You,” and “When I Pray for You” which you can find at Target and Sam's and Walmart and all over the place. How is writing for children different? How do you think and see in a very simple - but sometimes profound - way? What goes on inside the mind of a children's author? Well, if you're interested in writing for children, or think you might be someday, or if you just want to see how to tap into the parts inside you that can matter to others, this episode is for you.

Meredith and Kaytee have a special guest again this week to discuss our favorite picture books for the 2-5 year kiddos in your life! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: an author event, kid librarians, and a fantastic iTunes review. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We are each talking about two recent reads and we’ve got a variety of new titles that we cannot wait to discuss this week. For our deep dive, we are discussing our very favorite picture books for the 2-5 year old range. These kids are enraptured by great pictures, willing to sit for a great story, and ready to laugh at great jokes, so we’ve chosen some stand-out titles to share with you or the littles in your life. Abbey has a lot of great expertise in this area, so we are only too happy to have her input. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. We’ve got a childhood favorite, which may not be for kids, that has been read over and over again, a WWII novel told in a totally new way, and a reference book that belongs on every parent’s shelves. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of the hosts: getting sucked in by a book to the detriment of…. the rest of your life, and fun book mail deliveries. Meredith is on vacation, so Kaytee has a special guest co-host join her for this week’s episode. She is so excited to share her conversation with Jessica Turner! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: one that only a family of two authors will ever experience and a new discovery at the library that made for a quiet weekend at home. We dive in to discussing 2 books each. One of which we both cannot stop talking about. Next, we get to discuss Jessica’s new book, Stretched Too Thin, as well as her previous work, The Fringe Hours. Both are books you need on your shelves! Who wants to win a copy of STT? I’ll be giving away a copy on Instagram this week, so pop on over there to enter!
