There are many rich images used to depict the nature of the Church in the New Testament. The Body of Christ, the Salt of the Earth, etc... One scholar notes as many as 96 of them! Part of the picture this gives us is that the church is so glorious, and the wonderful truths about it are so myriad, that it requires many different images to draw out all of its beauty. Sort of like the way in which the luster of a diamond is drawn out when examined from different angles and in different lighting. Not only so, but all true local churches are also like embassies or outposts of the Kingdom of Heaven. They are the place where the values, the power, and the authority of the Kingdom of Heaven show up on the earth.Furthermore, to say that the Church is the temple of God, is to say that it is in the Church where God is most uniquely present. This week, Terrence kicked off a new three-week sermon series titled Echo — a call to examine the culture of worship both inside the church and in our everyday lives. It's an invitation to live in a way that mirrors the eternal worship in heaven. Worship should echo heaven — meaning our lives here on earth are meant to reflect and magnify God's glory. Terrence reminded us that all of life is worship. Whether we realize it or not, everything we say and do either reflects or distorts God's image. The way we worship — at home, at work, in traffic, or in trials — declares something to the world. And when we choose to live a life of worship, God meets us not just with strength, but with peace. When our worship is reactive, reflective, and missional, it transforms lives. When our lives are grounded in worship, we experience peace — a desperately needed resource in today's chaotic world. By fixing our minds on the throne of God and offering worship through every act, we join the eternal song of heaven and radiate hope into every area of life.
