Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, this week with special guest Andy McCarroll, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, Antoine Fuqua's Training Day. Jake Hoyt is a young officer training with the Los Angeles Police Department. He is assigned to the care of Detective Alonzo Harris. However, it quickly becomes clear that Hoyt has been thrown into a world that he doesn't fully understand, and that Harris is a very unconventional supervising officer. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best or worst movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Kelsi and Trey dive into the chaotic world of Training Day, the 2001 crime thriller that earned Denzel Washington his only Best Actor Academy Award. They explore Washington's portrayal of Detective Alonzo Harris, a cartoonish villain elevated by Washington's charisma and command. We also explore Washington's career, highlighting his versatility across his very-different eras, examining how Training Day fits into his filmography. While Training Day is a propulsive movie, and Washington is undeniably compelling, we also touch on why this film has a complicated legacy for a variety of reasons. The Extra Credits YouTube Channel Become a member of The Extra Credits+ on Patreon here How to link Patreon to Spotify and Apple Letterboxd: The Extra Credits TikTok: The Extra Credits Reddit: r/TheExtraCredits Instagram: @theextracredits Twitter: @theextracredits Send requests, questions, and thoughts to our email: extracreditspod@gmail.com

"Training Day," released in 2001 and directed by Antoine Fuqua, was a significant milestone in the crime thriller genre, largely due to the transformative performance of Denzel Washington. The film follows the corrupt and morally ambiguous Detective Alonzo Harris (played by Washington) as he takes rookie cop Jake Hoyt (played by Ethan Hawke) under his wing for a day of training on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Denzel Washington's portrayal of the charismatic yet morally bankrupt Alonzo was a standout in the film, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor. The production team worked extensively to create a gritty and immersive portrayal of urban life, with Fuqua and his cinematographer, Mauro Fiore, capturing the tension and danger of the streets, providing a vivid backdrop for the film's intense drama. "Training Day" was filmed on location in Los Angeles, giving the movie an authentic feel and a sense of place. The production team collaborated with the LAPD to ensure accuracy in the depiction of police procedures, adding a layer of realism to the story. The film's exploration of police corruption and moral dilemmas, combined with Washington and Hawke's compelling performances, contributed to its critical acclaim and commercial success, solidifying its status as a modern classic in the crime thriller genre. As they patrol the dangerous and gritty streets of Los Angeles, Hoyt quickly discovers that Alonzo's methods are far from conventional, involving brutal tactics and questionable ethics. Throughout the day, Hoyt is thrust into a morally complex world where the lines between right and wrong blur, and he must make a series of life-altering decisions while navigating a web of corruption and deceit. "Training Day" is a tense and morally charged thriller that explores the dark underbelly of law enforcement and showcases Denzel Washington's Oscar-winning performance as a charismatic yet morally compromised cop. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In 2001, Antoine Fuqua decided it was time to direct a movie with a lead actor getting nominated for a supporting role Oscar, and a supporting actor getting nominated for a lead role Oscar. And as we all probably know, Denzel got the best actor award while Ethan Hawke got bupkis in Training Day. Also starring Scott Glenn, Eva Mendes, Cliff Curtis, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Training Day follows Officer Jake Hoyt, a fresh recruit who gets put on Detective Alonzo Harris's undercover narcotics team for his training day. Rather than feel the rookie out slowly, Alonzo decides that weed, PCP, theft, blackmail, murder, and mid-day babysitting would be a better test of skills. Made for $45M, Training Day made $105 at the box office and received a better-than-average critical response. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin, and Brent discuss the finer points of undercover policing and crooked cops as we see if this movie likes to get wet, or if it should get its head blasted off in an old bathtub.

Comedians Funmbi Omotayo (Quotas Full) and Dane Baptiste (Questions Everything) return to Flixwatcher to review Funmbi’s choice, Training Day.   Training Day is a 2001 film from Antoine Fuqua and written by David Ayer, it stars Ethan Hawke as rookie officer Jake Hoyt on his first day with live wire Detective Alonzo Harris played by Denzel Washington earning him his second Best Actor Oscar. Training Day isn’t a typical buddy cop movie, things get dark pretty quickly, Denzel’s Alonzo doses Hoyt with PCP laced marijuana which he forces him to smoke at gunpoint and what follows is a day of robbery, corruption, and murder. all this is in the eyes of Alonzo ‘part of the job’. Training Day is all about Denzel. Clearly enjoying playing (a rare) bad guy role and bringing some humanity to a character that is a complete psychopath. Ethan Hawke just about manages to keep up but it’s Denzel’s film - a great performance but on reflection maybe not worthy of all the Oscar nominations it received. Scores [supsystic-tables id=138] Despite a dubious and unintentionally laughable ending Training Day scores very highly across recommendability and only loses points on repeat viewing to score a very respectable 4.26 overall. Clint Watts: The World of Advanced Persistent Manipulators     This $#!%’s chess! It ain’t checkers  -- Detective Alonzo Harris; 2001, Training Day     Want to have some fun with some numbers? As of May 2019, the total worldwide population identifying as human is 7.7 billion. Among those people, 4.4 billion of them use the internet. Not quite everyone is sharing their lives, but there are 3.499 billion active social media users.   Are they all real people? That’s a valid question… There are an estimated 270 million fake Facebook profiles. Oh… and… in 2018 Twitter deleted 70 Million accounts they determined were fake. So there’s that.   Clint Watts studies terrorists, terrorism, social media, external forces meddling with elections and a lot of other Orwellian things. Since publishing Messing with the Enemy: Surviving in a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians, and Fake News last summer, he has looked deeper into other types of election hacking including Deepfakes. You may have seen his June testimony in front of the U.S. House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on C-Span… if you’re a C-Span type of person.   In this week’s episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson welcomes Clint Watts back to InSecurity. This week, we dig into Advanced Persistent Manipulators. Like their technology cousin Advanced Persistent Threats, APMs are hard to quantify, harder to understand and ever more difficult to stop. With governments all over the world in a state of perpetual campaign mode and candidates running their own Troll farms, do we even know what to prepare for? Tune in and find out!   About Clint Watts Clint Watts (@selectedwisdom) is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Non-Resident Fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy. His book best-selling Messing with the Enemy: Surviving in a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians, and Fake News shined a light on what has, is and could happen with regard to social media manipulation and the ways foreign interests can hack the electoral process. It was recently released in paperback.   Clint is also a national security contributor for NBC News and MSNBC. His research and writing focuses on terrorism, counterterrorism, social media influence and Russian disinformation. Clint’s tracking of terrorist foreign fighters allowed him to predict the rise of the Islamic State over al Qaeda in 2014. From 2014 – 2016, he worked with Andrew Weisburd and J.M. Berger to track and model the rise of Russian influence operations via social media leading up to the U.S. Presidential election of 2016. This research led Clint to testify before four different Senate committees in 2017and 2018regarding Russia’s information warfare campaign against the U.S. and the West.   Before becoming a consultant, Clint served as a U.S. Army infantry officer, a FBI Special Agent, as the Executive Officer of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, as a consultant to the FBI’s Counter Terrorism Division and National Security Branch, and as an analyst supporting the U.S. Intelligence Community and U.S. Special Operations Command.   His supporters think he’s had an interesting career, his enemies think he can’t hold down a job… both would be correct.   Messing with the Enemy: Surviving in a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians, and Fake News A former FBI Special Agent and leading cyber-security expert offers a devastating and essential look at the misinformation campaigns, fake news, and electronic espionage operations that have become the cutting edge of modern warfare—and how we can protect ourselves and our country against them. Clint Watts electrified the nation when he testified in front of the House Intelligence Committee regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. In Messing with the Enemy, the cyber and homeland security expert introduces us to a frightening world in which terrorists and cyber criminals don’t hack your computer, they hack your mind. Watts reveals how these malefactors use your information and that of your friends and family to work for them through social media, which they use to map your social networks, scour your world affiliations, and master your fears and preferences. Thanks to the schemes engineered by social media manipulators using you and your information, business executives have coughed up millions in fraudulent wire transfers, seemingly good kids have joined the Islamic State, and staunch anti-communist Reagan Republicans have cheered the Russian government’s hacking of a Democratic presidential candidate’s e-mails. Watts knows how they do it because he’s mirrored their methods to understand their intentions, combat their actions, and coopt their efforts. Watts examines a particular social media platform—from Twitter to internet Forums to Facebook to LinkedIn—and a specific bad actor—from al Qaeda to the Islamic State to the Russian and Syrian governments—to illuminate exactly how social media tracking is used for nefarious purposes. He explains how he’s learned, through his successes and his failures, to engage with hackers, terrorists, and even the Russians—and how these interactions have generated methods of fighting back. Shocking, funny, and eye-opening, Messing with the Enemy is a deeply urgent guide for living safe and smart in a super-connected world.   About Matt Stephenson Insecurity Podcast host Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Security Technology team at Cylance, which puts him in front of crowds, cameras, and microphones all over the world. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a moment nearly 5 years in the making. After countless jokes and memes, Dustin and Dalton finally sit down to talk about Training Day on your favorite film analysis podcast. King Kong has nothing on Training Day That's right, as #ABWD continues it has seemingly all lead to this. Training Day is important as it marks the first pairing between Washington and Fuqua. But, it is also important as it marks Denzel's Best Performance in a Lead Role win. After the win, many considered the win to be an acknowledgement of Denzel's career post Glory. But, in some ways that downplays his performance in Training Day. Washington plays Detective Alonzo Harris, a narcotics officer who is deep undercover. Told over the course of one day, Harris is set to show Jake Hoyt (Hawke) the ropes of narco. It is a day that will test both men. A day to see what is good, what is bad and what appears in shades of grey. As many long time listeners know, and fans of The People's History of Film, Training Day is a very personal film for Dalton. And it rightfully takes its place among the great Denzel performances, and the GoodTrash reading list. Before we analyze Training Day, we go through the usual routine. We talk about our initial thoughts, play a game and of course we decide whether it goes in the trash or on the shelf. But you probably already know the answer to that.
