Generative Artificial Intelligence is no longer something that is coming — it is here and it's exploding. Over the last few months, we've been introduced to technologies such as ChatGPT, a chatbot already helping to write articles for publications such as CNET and BuzzFeed. How can writers survive this? Guest Nina Schick is an author, advisor, and speaker specializing in Generative AI. Nina's 2020 book, Deepfakes, uncovered the dangerous political consequences of AI. Nina also writes a must-read substack called The Era of Generative AI. On the show, we talk about what Chat GPT can do, how it works, the benefits and the dangers, and whether powerful new AI will help augment our writing or automate it.

On this edition of Parallax Views, much has been made about the dark, harmful, deceptive, and negative ways which deepfake technology can be utilized as its usage becomes democratized in the coming years. From racists using the tech to make the black lead actress of Disney's upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid white to involuntary pornography and nudification apps, there are some noxious ways the tech has been used so far. That said, can their also be positive uses for these technologies? Artist Stephanie Lepp believes it can and has played with deepfakes in her Webby Award-winning project Deep Reckonings, which imagines controversial figures like Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg confronting the worst aspects of themselves vis-a-vis deepfaked conversations. Stephanie joins us on this edition of the program to discuss the potential for pro-social deepfakes as seen in her Deep Reckonings series as well as: - Re-evaluating our ideas around Accountability and redemption at our current social/cultural juncture - The origins of Deep Reckonings, Stephanie's Reckoning podcast, and her imaginary conversation with the Pope (in which the Catholic Church's leader reckons with the Church's sexual abuse scandal) - A discussion about Alex Jones, how he's seemed to change over the years, his doubling down on having done nothing wrong in his handling/coverage of the Sandy Hook case, and his interviews with Joe Rogan - Charles Koch and Stephanie's idea for a reckoning he'd have regarding the issue of climate change; taking people as acting in good faith even if they're ideas our wrong - Technology and our relationship with knowledge; evolving our concept of truth; ecstatic truth and truth through fiction - Is deepfake technology good, bad, or neutral?; context and culture in relation to deepfake tech's use; technological determinism - Stephanie's early activism related to the environment and how it played a role in her later endeavors like Deep Reckonings - Social change and personal transformation - Future deep reckonings; Vladimir Putin; our relationship to truth and propaganda - The politics of synthetic media; do technologies have political qualities? And much, much more!

Intel's Responsible AI work recently revealed FakeCatcher, a deepfake detection technology that can detect fake videos with 96% accuracy. The platform is the world's first real-time deepfake detector that returns results in milliseconds. FakeCatcher uses Intel's hardware and software to assess "blood flow" signals in real videos to detect inauthenticity. The technology can run up to 72 different detection streams simultaneously on 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Social media platforms can use this technology to prevent the spread of deepfakes, global news organizations to avoid amplifying manipulated videos, and non-profit organizations to democratize the detection of deepfakes for everyone. Intel also recently announced its extended collaboration with Mila, an AI research institute in Montreal, to help advance AI techniques to tackle global challenges like climate change, identify drivers of diseases, and expedite drug discovery. Accelerating the research and development of advanced AI to solve some of the world's most critical and challenging issues requires a responsible approach to AI and the ability to scale computing technology. As leaders in computing and AI, Intel and Mila will work together to tackle some of the challenges the world faces today and drive tangible results. Lama Nachman, Intel Fellow and Director of Intelligent Systems Research Lab at Intel Labs, joins me on Tech talks Daily in a discussion about Responsible AI and the real-time deepfake detector.

Privacy Mining will increase because of billions of IoT devices being connected every day. Combined with advanced psychologic research, this can be a very powerful tool for manipulating people's behavior. A Fake reality also poses a big threat to our future of privacy. Software, such as Deep Fakes, has the ability to use someone's facial structure and create fake videos featuring digitally created characters with an uncanny resemblance of real people, such as celebrities. This technology is so advanced, that our minds aren't sophisticated enough to comprehend the difference between real and fake data created by it, which leads to the next point. We are entering a trust crisis. Trust is the foundation for innovation and technological advance. If people don't trust autonomous cars - they won't use them; if people don't certain websites - they won't read their news; Without trust, we cannot move forward, which is why we need to raise awareness about the dark future of privacy.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok have banned deepfakes, which are realistic but fabricated or manipulated representations, often of public figures. Yet a TikTok video in which a fake Tom Cruise serenades the real Paris Hilton went viral. That video is one of dozens from the account @DeepTomCruise. The account has racked up almost 4 million followers with its digital simulations of the famous actor singing, golfing and, of course, laughing in a slightly too intense way. Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino speaks with Anjana Susarla, professor of responsible artificial intelligence at Michigan State University's Broad College of Business. Zamy, a Taiwanese influencer, had worked hard to build up a wholesome reputable image. Yet, it was all going to come crashing down in the most nightmare-ish way possible. One day, she woke up to being flooded with messages with people asking her “what are you doing this for? Do you not make enough money on YouTube?” It was a “leaked” video of Zamy. She was engaging in sexual activity yet she didn't remember anything about this encounter. But clearly, it happened because there was no denying that was her face. But the more she studied the video the more she realized a few small things were off. Her body didn't look the same. She didn't speak Japanese, but in the video she did. She was so confused. She had to dig further. What she found was terrifying. A group of thousands of men who were trading and purchasing deepfake p*rn videos of YouTubers and celebrities. None of the people depicted consented for their faces to be used like this. And this was just the start of a nightmare.
