When Marlon Brando won Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his role in The Godfather on March 27, 1973, he sent Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather in his place. Dressed in traditional Apache garb, she declined the award on Brando's behalf, “And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry." Littlefeather's appearance was met with a mix of boos and applause from the audience. But, before her death in 2022, the Academy honoured Littlefeather for her protest, calling it "a powerful statement on behalf of human dignity and against the marginalization of Indigenous people." In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca consider the lasting impact of this stark political moment; revisit Littlefeather's earlier work for Playboy; and explain why, as a rumoured ‘Pretendian', her ethnic identity continues to make headlines… Further Reading: • ‘A shocking moment in Oscars history, 50 years on' (BBC Culture, 2023): https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20230302-the-most-shocking-moment-in-oscars-history-50-years-on • ‘Sacheen Littlefeather was a Native icon. Adrien Brody took home the Best Actor Oscar for The Brutalist on Sunday night, delivering a speech that unexpectedly included a mention of Harvey Weinstein's children with his ex-wife, Georgina Chapman—who also happens to be Brody's current partner. Backstage, Brody reflected on the historical significance of his role, saying: “As I had mentioned in my speech, I am oddly receiving recognition for representing a time in history that we witness unchecked anti-Semitism. Hatred and oppression have no place in this world, and we must learn from the past.” From his prison cell, Weinstein, now 72, reacted to Brody's mention of his children, saying he was “both happy for his ex and their children.” Chapman, 48, divorced Weinstein after his conviction for sexual assault, and she and Brody have been together since. Sounds like a Hollywood drama in real life—but one with an Oscar-winning performance at its center. Don't miss our exclusive red-carpet coverage from the Academy Awards! Colman Domingo should be a Best Actor Oscar frontrunner this year, with Clarence Maclin and Sean San Jose in the Best Supporting Actor category (to say nothing of Dino and Charlie stealing the show and our hearts). In this episode, I discuss a sequel that may or may not have really been needed. That sequel is “Joker: Folie a Deux” which means Joker: two people sharing a delusion. The original “Joker” from 2019 was a movie that most people weren't looking forward to but ended up being a $1 billion dollar surprise at the box office. It wasn't just a great movie based on a comic book character. It was a great movie period with it's entertainingly dark atmosphere and menace and a Best Actor Oscar-winning performance from Joaquin Phoenix. Now Phoenix returns to show us the rest of Joker's story after we last saw him being a bad boy at Arkham Asylum. Does he escape? Does he continue to create bloody havoc? Will he meet a pop star in prison? Well, that last one is true as we see in the trailers with Lady Gaga joining the cast as Harley Quinn. Is this movie worth your time, or should you just watch the original again? Find out with this episode. “Joker: Folie a Deux” also stars Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, Leigh Gill, Ken Leung, Jacob Lofland and Bill Smitrovich.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Between the chaos surrounding 'Joker 2', the hate pouring out of fandoms like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and the commercial failures of critical darlings like 'Transformers: One', and 'Furiosa', it's easy to understand why it's so hard to predict success in these wildly uncertain times in Hollywood. Todd Phillips 'Joker' made over one billion dollars in 2019, and took home the Best Actor Oscar for it's trouble, but the sequel, which adds the massively popular Lady Gaga to the mix is set to be a massive box office bomb. Why? Julian and Jeremy examine that question, and try to put things in context with the recent Variety article about Hollywood executives cow-towing to angry fans. Bing Crosby was the biggest star both in music and in film of the 1940s.  Going My Way put him on an even higher level of popularity.  The film earned him the Best Actor Oscar, which was the first of three nominations in his acclaimed career.  His charm, his demeanor, and of course his beautiful voice, was a huge reason for the movie's success. However, has the movie stood the test of time? Does it still resonate with people after 80 years?  Does it still deserve to be regarded as the best film of 1944?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about Going My Way as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1944 to.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.Tags: OscarsAcademy AwardsBest PicturewinnermoviesfilmreviewRewatching Oscarpodcast

On previous episodes we have spoken to Phil Foster aka Phil The Bear about his fascinating series of director profiles. That's where Phil watches all of the films linked to a major director and writes an in-depth article analysing both their career and their output. Following the article being published, we at At The Flicks then bring a small team together to discuss the work and the director in question with Phil. That approaches changes with this profile. Rather than take that holistic approach, we asked Phil to rate his top five Martin Scorsese features based on his rewatches. We wanted a top five and that's what we got. So over six upcoming episodes we will discuss those five top selections. Wait, I hear you say, why six shows for five films? Well, after talking about the five (in reverse order) we will have our usual show to discuss the director and their career. So, who is the first director for this new format? It is the colossal talent that is Martin Scorsese, and, trust me listener, it was a tough choice to get Phil to get his favourites down to five for this series. Also, they are not obvious selections – take this first one, number five in Phil's list – The Color Of Money. Yes, Phil has selected what many thought at the time (mid 80's) as Scorsese sellout to commercialism movie, starring acting legend Paul Newman and up and coming new kid on the block Tom Cruise. It is also a sequel to a film (The Hustler) that was not made by him. We talk about all of that in our entertaining podcast as well as: - Who offered the project to Martin Scorsese - Female characters in his movies - If The Color Of Money can be classed as a sports film - What other roles members of this cast could have played in future Scorsese features - Was Paul Newman's Best Actor Oscar deserved - And much more Please come with us on our Martin Scorsese journey – and think about this, if The Color Of Money is number five, what could possibly be number four? The answer is coming in a few episodes time – until then, stay safe and we'll see you At The Flicks. Bye for now.

The fellas just barely got this episode out at the end of March, keeping their promise of one episode a month this year alive. And ironically, they're doing an episode about something that happened several weeks ago. Sonny and Tom do a deep dive into the weirdest moments of the most recent Academy Awards, which saw Oppenheimer sweep, Killers of the Flower Moon get shut out, and Emma Stone enter a new conversation as one of the GOATs of her time. Not to mention Oscar award presentations by Al Pacino and our good old pal Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then the boys try out two mini brackets of 8 entries, one with the last 8 Best Actor Oscar winners and one with the last 8 Best Actress Oscar winners. The brackets ask the boys to ponder who would win in a fight between the two characters that the actors were playing. Some of the matchups are a bit obvious, such as J. Robert Oppenheimer facing off against the most morbidly obese man to ever grace the screen. But other matchups really make you think, like Will Smith's Richard Williams facing off against Casey Affleck's incredibly depressed day laborer in "Manchester by the Sea." Intrigued yet? Yeah, we wouldn't be either. But it's a fun time. And of course, the opening segment is not to be forgotten. Your hosts discuss if Arnold Schwarzenegger would win an Oscar playing George C. Scott's titular role in "Patton," a role for which Scott refused to accept the Academy Award because he rejected award ceremonies as a concept. So the boys spend most of the time roasting George C. Scott for that pointless protest before actually imagining Arnold in the role. It wouldn't be his best shot, but it's not impossible!Hosted by Sonny de Nocker (@swankysonny) and Tom Price (@thomas_price22).Theme by Josh Britt (jbrittmusic.com)Instagram: AnOscarForArnoldTwitter: @AnOscar4ArnoldTikTok: AnOscarForArnoldContact: AnOscarForArnold@gmail.com

Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! We always love coming back to Sidney Poitier on this show, and finally, this week, Morgan and Jeannine take a look at the movie that won him his Best Actor Oscar; LILIES OF THE FIELD (1963)! Poitier acts as a wandering prophet, unknowingly answering the prayers of a group of nuns who want to build a chapel in the desert. What results is a warm-hearted, optimistic movie of community, togetherness and religious fulfilment that forced Morgan and Jeannine to wonder why this was the movie that won him the award above many other more intense, powerful roles and movies! The Oscars countdown has come to a close on All the Film Things! On the fifteenth  episode of ATFT, my friends photojournalist/ unofficial ATFT co- host Cole Echevarria, director Craig Pedroza, and actress Lina Smith join this year's panel to discuss the Oscar nominated films and share our predicted winners!  This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. 2023 was a great year for film… making this year's Oscars very exciting! This year's awards season has become the most competitive since the 2020 awards season, with competing films that included Parasite, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and Joker. For the 2024 Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer earned the most nominations (13) this year while Poor Things came in second, earning 11 nominations. Other films that received many nominations are Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, Maestro, and American Fiction. Even though Oppenheimer is predicted to sweep this year, many categories are have become incredibly competitive, leaving audiences torn on who will win. Will it be Cillian Murphy or Paul Giamatti who will take home the Best Actor Oscar (a strong debate between Cole and I)? How about who will win Best Actress: Lily Gladstone or Emma Stone? These are just two of the widely debated categories. We will soon learn the answer on Sunday, March 10! Every one of this year's Oscar panelists are returning guests. This is Cole's fifteenth appearance on ATFT (fifth on this wide release). This is both Craig and Lina's fourth appearance each on the show while also having one episode each released on the wide release (Episode 12 for Craig and Episode 6 for Lina). Cole and I recorded an Oscars special for the 2023 Oscars via the Relevnt app. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to make it a big yearly event for the show! Since the Oscars is the “Super Bowl for film fans”, this episode is in a more Sports Center- format. This episode was recorded exactly one month before the Oscars on February 10, 2024.  In this episode, Cole, Craig, Lina, and I go through each category and discuss our predicted winners. Cole and I have very strong favorites, his being The Holdovers and mine being Oppenheimer. We agree that our banter in this episode is the best and most entertaining yet. There are few categories we unanimously agree on. Lina compares the brilliant aging hair and makeup in Oppenheimer and Maestro. Craig thinks that even though Oppenheimer is predicted to be the Best Picture winner, there could definitely be an upset. In addition to sharing our predictions, we talked about snubs and surprises, our ranging thoughts on Wes Anderson's work, films like Saltburn and May December that fizzled out from Oscar buzz over time, and more! ATFT Announcement!: Due to recent production assistant opportunities, there will be no episode on March 13. All the Film Things will be back on March 27! In which the Mister and I check out RUSTIN (2023), which we caught on Netflix.  From director George C. Wolfe and writers Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, the film tells the story of Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo, who is in contention for the Best Actor Oscar at this year's Academy Awards), the main architect and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.  While battling racism and homophobia, Rustin channels his power for the greater good and gets to work on organizing the largest peaceful protest in the service of furthering the civil rights movement.  Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Johnny Ramey, CCH Pounder, Michael Potts, Audra McDonald and Jeffrey Wright (also up for a Best Actor Oscar for his turn in AMERICAN FICTION) round out the star studded cast.  The film clocks in at 1 h 46 m and is rated  PG-13.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Hollywood's Oscar ceremony is like the Super Bowl for cinema lovers. But beyond the clothes, the speeches, and the musical numbers, it's all about the winners. And some leave us scratching our heads. Did How Green Was My Valley really deserve the Best Picture Oscar over Citizen Kane in 1941? How did CARY GRANT and MYRNA LOY never win competitive Oscars? And who the hell is LUISE RAINER, and how did she rob IRENE DUNNE and BARBARA STANWYCK of their Oscars? Join STEVE CUBINE, writer of the Emmy-Award winning series Break A Hip, and NAN MCNAMARA, renowned actress and director, as they discuss some of the most baffling Oscar fumbles in the history of the Academy Awards. CORRECTION: In this episode, it was erroneously mentioned that Dustin Hoffman lost the 1967 Best Actor Oscar to John Wayne when in reality, Hoffman lost to Rod Steiger for In The Heat Of The Night. A feisty and gorgeous Jane Fonda is a perfect accompaniment to this Easter Monday. Or even if young Jane has nothing to do with the rabbit holiday and even if this is far from her most-challenging role, she DOES headline a fun comedy-western where she gets some payback. And that's fitting since this is Revenge Month. Lee Marvin won the Best Actor Oscar for his dual role as the killer villain and the drunken "hero". Comedy performances don't often result in Academy Awards, so his win still stands out. Elliot Silverstein does a good job managing those tonal changes in what was his debut as a movie director. It feels like 2001 wasn't that long ago, but that's the year we got director Antoine Fuqua's hard-hitting film, Training Day. It came out of nowhere and blew audiences away with its gripping and suspense-filled story that kept them on edge, mainly thanks to Denzel Washington playing a genuinely terrifying villain that won him the Best Actor Oscar that year.

During the 2022 Oscars' ceremony, Will Smith shocked the world. Smith strode onstage and smacked Chris Rock, after the comedian made a joke about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams's father in King Richard, and later in the night he and Rock reportedly made amends. When Smith was announced as the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor the audience gave him a standing ovation as he approached the stage. The first thing that he said in his tearful five-minute acceptance speech was that “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” and he went on to talk about “protecting” the Black women who co-starred in King Richard with him.  Since Sunday the internet has been abuzz with reaction. Commentators like Eric Deggans and Craig Melvin have condemned Smith's actions. But many saw an act of chivalry, with people like actress Tiffany Haddish and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley praising what they viewed as Smith's defense of his wife.So what does it actually mean to protect Black women? And is physical violence ever an acceptable response to verbal abuse?
