Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay head to the hardware store to grab supplies and take out baddies as they talk about 'The Equalizer.' Andy kicks it off by reminiscing about the time he was apprehended at a hardware store for buying supplies that made employees very suspicious. Then the fellas talk about one of the better action films of the 2010s, which was helped by starring perhaps the coolest mofo on the planet, Denzel Washington. The guys discuss how Denzel goes full Michael Myers-death merchant mode as he wreaks havoc on the bad guys 'Home Alone' style as he uses all the hardware store tools at his disposal. That leads to many gnarly deaths, including multiple nail gun related homicides. Along the way, Andy and Bombay laugh about meeting loons in diners, and how the people in Denzel's orbit in this flick are cursed with bad luck, but luckily meet a benevolent superhero. This movie often gets mistaken for the morass of John Wick clones that came along, but Antoine Fuqua's franchise actually hit theaters before everyone's favorite retired assassin. Make sure you listen to the end to get some great recs to pair with this movie, and whatever you do don't befriend any annoyingly whiny overweight security guards at work.
In this episode of the show we are putting a finishing touch on our February with Antoine Fuqua with a conversation about Shooter. Over the course of our chat you will hear us talk about the many years it took to adapt this story into a movie, how Mark Wahlberg and Antoine Fuqua made it happen and how (and perhaps why) the movie left a minimal cultural footprint behind it. We also talk about Mark Wahlberg as a post-Bourne action hero and how Shooter may have been an attempt to spawn a series, the many genre cliches peppered throughout the film and how confessing to conspiracies in broad daylight in an office setting is probably not a good idea at all. Oh, and we also spare a few words about the intricate ways government officials take to frame patsies and sweep crimes under the carpet.Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Rich FosterIntro: Infraction - CassetteOutro: Infraction - DaydreamHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! In this podcast we are tying into our February theme surrounding the early cinema of one Antoine Fuqua and we are discussing his most highly acclaimed feature Training Day. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how Denzel Washington may have helped Fuqua make this movie, how David Ayer's script is brimming with authenticity and how some people find this brand of writing provocative and whether this movie has two leads or just one. We also talk about seemingly real ramifications of holding a gun sideways, whether Alonso was an undercover cop at all and just how anxiety-inducing it must be to play a hand of poker with a bunch of gangbangers. In this episode of the show Fuqua February continues with a discussion about his 2003 outing Tears of the Sun. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us try to understand what the mission behind this movie was, whether it was appropriate to transplant a real story into a whole new setting and whether the story in this new setting deserved to be treated as a cross between a prestige war drama and an actioner of the Rambo variety. We also talk about Bruce Willis's pull factor, Antoine Fuqua leaning into a post-Black Hawk Down aesthetic and how in the eyes of Hollywood producers Canadian special forces clearly look way less cooler than Navy Seals. In this episode of the show our February trip through the early outings of Antoine Fuqua continues with a conversation about his sophomore movie Bait. Over the course of our chat you will hear us talk about how Bait fits into the landscape of movie entertainment at the turn of the century, how much it owes to a whole bunch of 90s movies and filmmakers and how it proves that Hollywood studios can often be terminally inflexible in the face of impending change. We also talk about Jamie Foxx as a comedic presence, Doug Hutchison's finger gloves, the movie's MTV sets and how it suggests that hiding gold in public places is a trifle for those who know what's what. Jake Hoyt is a young officer training with the Los Angeles Police Department. He is assigned to the care of Detective Alonzo Harris. However, it quickly becomes clear that Hoyt has been thrown into a world that he doesn't fully understand, and that Harris is a very unconventional supervising officer. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best or worst movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

The gang dives head first into one of Heather's favorite genres this week: Gerard Butler Trash Action... as they review the movie that spawned the Has Fallen Cinematic Universe, Olympus Has Fallen. While admittedly being a cheesy pie action movie, this non-stop action explosion of a movie was also directed by Antoine Fuqua, so you know it's gonna have some style that AVOD movies from today just don't have. Sure, everyone has heard of Coppola and Scorsese and Spielberg. But those guys are two silent generations and a Boomer! What about those Gen X filmmakers that have really made an impact on Hollywood? It turns out that there were way more notable directors from our generation than I had originally expected. This is only part one.Part 1 covers those directors born between 1965 and 1969. You may recognize names like Michael Bay, Wes Anderson, Antoine Fuqua, James Gunn, Zack Snyder, and Denis Villeneuve. Billions of dollars in box office between them, with some more “artistic” projects in their filmographies as well. We can also get so caught up the “big name” directors, that it is forgotten how the Pixar films have been - up until very recently - very high quality films, regardless of being animated. So guys like Byron Howard and Andrew Stanton, who have made some of the best of the Pixar flicks, are not household names outside the hardcore animation fans. It should come as no surprise that the movies that have most resonated with me in recent years have been Gen X directed. What are some of your favorites?

We discuss all three entries which span the 2010 decade and fuse meathead action cinema with post 9/11 paranoia and anxieties: Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen, one of the two 2013 thrillers about a terrorist attack on the White House, the ultraviolent sequel London Has Fallen, released in the wake of the real life terror attacks in London and Paris, and the best film in the franchise so far, Angel Has Fallen, where a weary Mike Banning has to take on the deep state and evil military contractors who have framed him for an assassination attempt on peacenik President Morgan Freeman, which leads him to have to team up with his estranged dad Nick Nolte, interrupting his Unabomber lifestyle. Actor and filmmaker Wade Allain-Marcus has a unique approach toward his involvement in a variety of films and television projects. It derives from factors like his mixed background, training in the Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW) at NYU, and growing up with parents in the business. The approach is one thing, but the result speaks for itself and is shaped by the ensembles he finds himself immersed into, such as the regular casts of HBO's Insecure or Netflix's Eric, the latter opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. From Lucy Forbes to Antoine Fuqua to John Singleton, Wade has worked with a variety of interesting directors who have affected his own approach to the craft. After making his directorial debut with Una y Otra y Otra vez, starring NYU classmate Gina Rodriguez, he directed the acclaimed French Dirty which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2015, and dealth with topics including male-friendships and infidelity in the context of a love triangle. He shot the film with close friends and NYU classmates including Arjun Gupta and his spouse Melina Lizette. Following a host of acting projects, he joined the writer's room of Grownish, which he also directed an episode of, and recently directed Academy Award Nominee June Squibb in the BET remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. in our conversation, we discussed parental relationships and influence; the musicality of filmmaking; and why it's so difficult to trivialize his acting and directing credits.Opening Credits: Jangwa - V I CC BY 4.0; LaFaena - Car Drive I CC BY 4.0. Today's episode packs a numerical punch as we explore the theme of the number four, diving into the top five instances where the number '4' plays a key role in film and entertainment. We'll then saddle up for a ride with the 2016 remake of "The Magnificent Seven" before settling down for a quieter exploration with "The Sound Collector."Top Five '4's in Entertainment:"Fantastic Four" (2005, 2015) - Marvel's first family of superheroes, known for their four distinct powers that complement each other, making them a formidable team against evil."Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994) - This British romantic comedy cleverly uses the number four in its plot structure, revolving around the social gatherings that bring the characters closer."I Am Number Four" (2011) - A sci-fi film about a group of alien teenagers on Earth, with the protagonist known as Number Four, who must evade assassins sent to kill him before he comes of age."The Four Feathers" (2002) - A historical drama about bravery and cowardice, featuring a protagonist who receives four white feathers symbolizing his perceived cowardice from his friends and loved one."The Sign of Four" (1987) - A Sherlock Holmes film based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, where the plot revolves around the mystery connected to the number four.Main Feature - The Magnificent Seven (2016):In this modern remake of the classic Western, director Antoine Fuqua reimagines the story with a diverse, star-studded cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke. The film follows seven gunslingers who come together to protect a poor village from savage thieves. While the film pays homage to the original, it also infuses new energy and interpretation into the tale, exploring themes of justice, courage, and sacrifice. The Sound Collector:Switching gears to a much different tempo, "The Sound Collector" (a fictional title for the sake of discussion) might be a documentary or a feature film exploring the world of sounds. This could involve a protagonist traveling the world to capture unique sounds from nature, cities, and people, using these sounds to tell stories or even solve mysteries. The film would highlight the importance of listening and the role of sound in shaping our environment and experiences.Whether you're intrigued by the action and camaraderie of "The Magnificent Seven," fascinated by the auditory journey in "The Sound Collector," or just enjoying our numerical narrative with the top five '4's in entertainment, today's episode promises a blend of action, thoughtfulness, and a bit of numerical fun. In this latest episode of the Born to Watch Podcast, hosts Whitey and Gow, along with special guest Sloane Nickson, dive into the 2007 action-packed thriller, "Shooter". Directed by Antoine Fuqua and based on the novel "Point of Impact" by Stephen Hunter, "Shooter" follows the story of Bob Lee Swagger (played by Mark Wahlberg), a former Marine Corps sniper who is coaxed back into action only to be framed for a crime he didn't commit. "Shooter" starts with a bang, quite literally, setting the tone for a film that's both intense and complex. The narrative quickly evolves, presenting viewers with a puzzle that is as political as it is personal. Wahlberg's character, Swagger, is a man of few words but immense skill, drawn out of a self-imposed exile to prevent an assassination attempt on the President. However, the plot takes a dark turn when Swagger is betrayed, and framed for the assassination he was trying to prevent. The film's plot is a rollercoaster of twists and turns, each meticulously crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.Mark Wahlberg delivers one of his career-best performances as Swagger, embodying the role of the disillusioned yet highly capable marksman. His portrayal is both nuanced and powerful, bringing depth to a character that could easily have been one-dimensional. The supporting cast, including Michael Peña as FBI Agent Nick Memphis and Danny Glover as Colonel Isaac Johnson, provide solid performances that add layers to the story. However, it is Wahlberg's portrayal of Swagger's journey from isolation to redemption that stands as the film's emotional core.Beyond its action-packed surface, "Shooter" delves into themes of corruption, betrayal, and the search for justice. The film critiques the manipulation and exploitation inherent in the military and governmental institutions, making a poignant statement about the sacrifices of soldiers and the often murky ethics of those in power. Swagger's quest for truth and vindication is not just a personal journey but a commentary on the struggle against systemic injustice.Antoine Fuqua's direction is precise and compelling, balancing intense action sequences with moments of poignant introspection. The cinematography, led by Peter Menzies Jr., captures the expansive landscapes and tight, tense atmospheres with equal skill, highlighting the film's diverse settings from remote mountains to urban sprawls. The action sequences are particularly noteworthy, choreographed and shot in a way that feels both realistic and exhilarating.Since its release in 2007, "Shooter" has garnered a dedicated fan base, appreciating its blend of action, suspense, and moral complexity. It has spurred discussions about the representation of military veterans in cinema and the ethical dilemmas faced by those who serve. Degenerates Andy S and Brandon Bombay play chess, not checkers when they jump into 'Training Day.' Andy starts the pod off by telling the story of the time he "got wet" and overindulged on angel dust, which led to a psych ward visit — and much like Ethan Hawke in this movie, things only worsened from there. Then the guys dive in and try to make sense of this wildly popular film that was an amalgam of rap videos, low rent hood movies, and a dash of PSA-messaging that somehow earned Denzel Washington his first Best Actor win. It all makes for an entertaining episode cause "King Kong ain't go s*** on this pod!" 'Training Day' is a 2001 American crime thriller film directed by Antoine Fuqua. It stars Denzel Washington as Alonzo Harris and Ethan Hawke as Jake Hoyt, two LAPD narcotics officers.

January's theme is “PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS” where we analyze the works of two major black leading men and a lot of this month is devoted to DENZEL WASHINGTON. Today's discussion is a bit of casting and franchising genius as Denzel gets to essentially be a superhero without the costume and green screen. Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington plucked a deep cut TV series and turned it into a box office action success. This one is for the grandads who imagine themselves being badass in a Home Depot. Bob has a mysterious past, a built in detective mode in his mind and he made friends with a sex-trafficked Chloe Grace Moretz so, of course, he has to kill a bunch of people. Russians in particular. We're talking about THE EQUALIZER from 2014 and now they're on the third one. The things he can do with a nail gun and a shot glass are a trip. Denzel pulls out “franchise action star” later in his career and it's pretty impressive even if some of the story feels a wee bit overbaked. Robert McCall is back....and this time, he has ventured to Italy after having spent most of the previous two films mostly around his hometown of Boston. McCall is once again played by Denzel Washington in this third (and final) entry of the action film franchise which kicked off in 2014. This is also the third entry in a row directed by Antoine Fuqua who had previously directed Washington to his last Oscar win for Best Actor for the film Training Day from 2001. After recovering from a gunshot injury which nearly killed him, McCall now finds himself settling in a lovely small town in Southern Italy. He's hoping to get past the violence which has marked most of his career in the CIA and his post-CIA career as an....Equalizer. Unfortunately, the local Italian mafia has other ideas as he notices them threatening his town and its people, many of whom he has now befriended. So guess what happens next? Yup the Equalizer starts to.....EQUALIZE once again. ;) Co-stars include Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, David Denman, and Gaia Scodellaro. This week, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) ask if Taylor Swift and AMC got the better of the studios by agreeing to a direct distribution deal for her forthcoming Eras Tour movie concert. Given the way studios are messing with the release calendar in response to the ongoing strikes, was this a smart short-term play to fill a revenue gap for AMC, or something that augurs a whole new business opportunity? Most importantly: Will Alyssa browbeat Sonny into seeing the movie? We'll have to see. Then the gang discusses The Equalizer 3, director Antoine Fuqua's concise cinematic case for Just War Theory. Make sure to swing by Friday for our bonus episode on old-man action movies. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!

This week's Empire Podcast sees the arrival of Chris Hewitt's pre-beloved The Equalizer 3, and that film's director, the delightfully sweary Antoine Fuqua, joins Chris to talk about that film, about the challenges of getting Denzel Washington to ride a horse (not for this film), and ultra-violence on the big screen. With blood and gore already covered off, our other guest, Passages writer/director Ira Sachs, talks about the challenges of shooting sex scenes, and battling censorship, for his new film, which sees Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, and Adele Exarchopoulos engage in a love triangle. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined for a raucous episode by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer and, making her debut in the fourth chair, Australian author and massive geek Maria Lewis. She tells us all about her encounters with a brown snake, her upcoming book The Graveyard Shift, and chats with the podteam about their favourite numerical system when it comes to sequels and franchises, the week's movie news (such as it is), and even chips in during the reviews section, when the team take a look at The Equalizer 3, Cobweb, Passages, Vacation Friends 2 and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Oh, and the presence of an Australian in the podbooth can mean only one thing: hold onto your ears, the Aussie accents are coming out. Fair dinkum. Enjoy.
