This week, the boys return to 1989 for the second time to discuss “The Abyss”, James Cameron's underwater sci-fi thriller that paved the way for much of T2 and Titanic. Starring Ed Harris, May Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn, the film looks real… because it is! After John kicks things off with a mini-review of “Last Breath”, we set up what was happening in 1989 before diving deep into the film. I have a movie telling a harrowing true life tale about a deep sea, or saturation, diver in mortal peril this week called “Last Breath.” It stars Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Finn Cole and Cliff Curtis. As you know, there are thousands of miles of pipes in the ocean and somebody has to maintain them. That's where saturation divers come in. They dive to dangerous depths out in the middle of freezing cold, dark oceans, so deep they have to compress and decompress for four days. The movie centers on three divers, Chris, Dave and Duncan, who are all on the same diving team. As you'd imagine, the oceans can get pretty rough and that's what happens in this movie that ends up being one of the reasons for this ordeal. Circumstances have it to where Chris is disconnected from everyone else on the ocean floor with only ten minutes of oxygen. Thanks to the rough oceans, and the ship losing its computerized system that keeps the ship sitting still in one place, the ship gets further and further away from Chris. Can the rest of the crew make it back to Chris in time or will it just be a body recovery operation? Is it worth going to the theater to find out? Check out this episode to find out. “Last Breath” also stars Mark Bonnar, MyAnna Buring, Josef Altin, Bobby Rainsbury, Connor Reed, Nick Biadon and Riz Khan. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series!  Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave.  And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way.  During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic.  Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!It's the future, our sun is dying, and we have a crew of relatable scientists and astronauts on a mission to get to the Sun and re-ignite it so that our planet doesn't freeze.  The crew of the Icarus II includes a physicist (Oscar-Winner Cillian Murphy), a horticulturalist (Oscar-Winner Michelle Yeoh), an engineer (Chris Evans), a navigator (Rose Byrne), a sun-drenched psychologist (Cliff Curtis) and is lead by fearless Captain Kaneda (Emmy-Winner Hiroyuki Sanada).  This space adventure received strong reviews back in 2007 but sadly never received much of a theatrical release and was a box office bomb.  However since then, it has developed a solid cult following not the least of which is due to its iconic score from composer John Murphy.  Let's find out if this crew travels too close to the sun....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

“WHY'S EVERYTHING SO BLACK, TOOT?“(CONTENT WARNING: Although this movie was very good, we do have to warn you that it might not be for everyone. The subject matter is difficult and might be triggering for some, as it deals with domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide.)On this episode, we explore mid 90's New Zealand Maori cinema in the critically acclaimed Once Were Warriors, directed by Lee Tamahori. The film stars Rena Owen, Temuera Morrison, and Cliff Curtis, and it is based on the first entry of Alan Duff's book trilogy. We went into this movie blind, only really knowing Temuera Morrison from playing Jango/Boba Fett in Star Wars, and seeing Cliff Curtis show up everywhere from Avatar 2 to Training Day. We took it up after one of Austin's streamer friends RasNoMas, a native Hawaiian, recommended it to cover the podcast. The film was a huge hit in New Zealand when it was originally released in 1994, drawing more at the NZ box office than Jurassic Park! It was released to the states the following year, and almost 20 years later we both watched it for the first time. The film is about a Maori family living in Auckland, New Zealand. Jake, played by Temuera Morrison is at first very charming, but has a violently abusive side to him that terrorizes his whole family. Beth, played by Rena Owen, is trying to be there for her children but is slowly losing them one by one. Throughout the course of the film, we see the family take refuge in parts of the Maori heritage and culture. The great thing about watching films from different periods, from different parts of the world, and from different cultures, is that we get a good luck at what it's like to live in someone else's shoes. Once Were Warrior succeeds here, as it doesn't portray our characters as one dimensional archetypes, but as complex people brought to life by truly phenomenal acting. We hope you enjoy this episode!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

A fascination for dysfunctional, outsider characters in real life stories has led James Napier Robertson across the stage, small screen, and big screen.  The filmmaker has found huge success telling kiwi stories like The Dark Horse starring Cliff Curtis, and 2020's Dame Whina Cooper biopic.  Napier Robetson is going global with a story about one of the only American women ever to take part in the Russian ballet, Joy Womack, in his new film Joika.  He told Jack Tame that he's been really struck by Joy's story, even back when he saw it just by chance.  The filmmaker joined Tame to discuss the journey of making the film.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Your Stupid Minds tackles manuks, saber-tooth tigers, and terror birds in our latest episode that covers Roland Emmerich's 10,000 B.C., starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, and Cliff Curtis! Featuring returning guest and Steven Strait expert Sarah Dobson Richard! D'Leh (Strait) is a mammoth (manuk) hunter in the Ural Mountains who has determined he must kill a manuk all by his lonesome to marry Evolet (Belle). He does so, but not under the most ideal conditions, so he attains the White Spear and Evolet's heart, but with a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. Then some dudes on horses (with saddles and stirrups and metal weapons, somehow) steal half their tribe and D'Leh is determined to rescue them (mostly Evolet though). He and a few of his tribe mates traverse the smallest Sid Meier's Civilization map available, from the snowy mountains, damp jungle, and desert, to a city of pyramids run by a creepy god emperor. Can D'Leh unite the slaves into revolt and save his tribe? Can we finish this movie before falling asleep? Did they go out of their way to make this historically inaccurate? Has there ever been a successful caveman movie? You'll have to listen to find out.

Welcome back to the electrifying realm of "Planet Bruce" with your favorite brothers, Aleks and Milenko! In this episode, they're diving headfirst into the explosive world of "Live Free or Die Hard," the fourth installment of the iconic John McClane series. This time around, McClane has a new sidekick in the form of Justin Long. While their chemistry isn't bad, the writing doesn't quite hit the mark for snappy comedic timing, leaving some jokes falling flat. But fear not, because the movie has its share of great moments, thanks to excellent casting choices like the amazing Maggie Q, Timothy Olyphant, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (cue the "but my daughter is IMPORTANT" nod for our loyal audience), Cliff Curtis, and a memorable, if slightly awkward, cameo by Kevin Smith as a tech guru.Amidst the hits and misses, the standout performance comes from Timothy Olyphant, who brings a modern twist to the classic John McClane-type bad guy. The movie takes a bold step by delving into the realm of principled domestic terrorism, a "fire sale" scenario where "everything must go," illustrating the frightening potential of using the internet to disrupt every aspect of life. Intriguingly, the script was inspired by a speculative science and tech magazine article, blending the imagined scenario seamlessly into the John McClane lore. While the attempt to up the stakes from the previous movie may have left "Live Free or Die Hard" feeling a bit bloated and forgettable, the brothers bring their classic dynamic and excited candor to elevate the conversation. Join them as they dissect the highs, lows, and the fascinating intersections of technology and action in this episode of "Planet Bruce." It might not be a great movie, but it certainly makes for an excellent conversation that you won't want to miss. Tune in and brace yourself for a rollercoaster ride through the Die Hard universe!

ONCE WERE WARRIORS (1994) is Lee Tamahori's adaptation of the first instalment of a powerful drama exploring the lives of the Māori Heke family. An unflinching and often brutal depiction of the effects of alcoholism, domestic violence and extreme poverty, Temuera Morrisson garnered critical acclaim and went on to become an international star but he is ably supported by Rena Owen, Cliff Curtis and especially Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell who delivers a moving performance as tragic eldest daughter Grace, in what turns out to have been her only big screen appearance. Morrisson of course went on to feature as a Fett - two in fact, as Peter reminds me - whereas Director Tamahori went on to direct the preposterous Nicolas Cage thriller NEXT, reviewed on this pod and much loved by all. We love to hear from our listeners! Avatar: The Way of Water is a 2022 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, with a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.
