The saga of The Sully Clan and their adventures on the far off planet of Pandora continues with this third entry in Oscar-winning director James Cameron's ongoing franchise which started in 2009 with Avatar....but do we still care? :p Well according to recent box office returns, we certainly do and much of that might due to the continued spectacle of seeing these characters fly and swim and now fight fire on-screen.  The fire apparently comes from a new threat who's the leader of an ash tribe named Varang (Oona Chaplin) and as she starts to align with Colonel Quarytch (Stephen Lang, returning from the previous two films), that threat only seems to escalate.  And stuck in the middle of this conflict is young human Spider (Jack Champion) who is still loyal to his adopted family of the Sully's but might now also present a new threat to them and the future existence of the Navi on this planet.  Once again leading this sci-fi epic are Sam Worthington as Jake and now Oscar-winner Zoe Saldana as Netyri, along with several other returning cast members including Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis.  Let's find out if Big Jim can pull it off again and if the quality of the story matches the spectacle.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon  Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

James Cameron has returned to take us on a third trip to Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash is now out in cinemas worldwide and I finally, FINALLY had the chance to see the film yesterday after a long week of packing and traveling. This has easily been one of my most anticipated films of the year and pretty easily so because back in September 2022, I fell in love with this franchise. Finally having the chance to see the first Avatar in cinemas during its theatrical release-release was a game-changing cinematic experience for me and completely changed my perspective on a film that I felt very lukewarm to before that point. And then in December, Avatar: The Way of Water became a smash box office hit and, as far as I'm concerned, surpassed the first film by almost every single measure of quality. So, is the magic and awe of Pandora still alive? Is Avatar: Fire and Ash the best film in the trilogy? Find out all the answers in this review!Avatar: Fire and Ash:Directed by: James CameronScreenplay by: James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda SilverStory by: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane SalernoBased on charaacters created by: James CameronProduced by: Jon Landau, James CameronExeucutive Producers: Richard Baneham, Rae Sanchini, Peter M. pWotD Episode 3151: Avatar: Fire and Ash Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 173,847 views on Wednesday, 17 December 2025 our article of the day is Avatar: Fire and Ash.Avatar: Fire and Ash is a 2025 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, it is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the third installment in the Avatar franchise. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans, Jr. reprise their roles from the previous films, while Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis join the cast.Cameron, who had stated in mid-2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in early 2010 following the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a December 2015 release. However, the addition of two more sequels (four in total), and the development of new technology required to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash started shooting simultaneously with The Way of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming completed in late December 2020, after over three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of over $400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.Avatar: Fire and Ash had its world premiere at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, on December 1, 2025, and was first released in Germany and Phillipines on December 17, 2025, and in the United States on December 19. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, characters, performances, and action but criticized the runtime and simplicity of the plot. Two additional sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in various stages of production and are scheduled to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:12 UTC on Thursday, 18 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Avatar: Fire and Ash on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.

In this special bonus episode, Sienna and her dad Ben headed to Wellington (by plane - not flying creature) for the Avatar: Fire & Ash premiere. They sat down with legendary director James Cameron to chat about borrowing his Avatar pool, how Avatar first came to him in a dream, whether he’d change anything about Titanic if he made it today, and where Ben should (or absolutely should not) be allowed to display his Avatar children's toy at home. It’s a seriously funny and fascinating conversation. They also caught up with three of the film’s stars: iconic Kiwi actor Cliff Curtis, Avatar’s Jake Sully himself, Sam Worthington, and Jack Champion, who plays Spider. Cliff reveals why he hates watching his own movies, all three share the very different ways they landed their roles, and the group weighs in on whether Ben should show up to pick Sienna up from school in full Avatar costume. Plus: behind-the-scenes chaos including sharing a room with a snoring dad, red carpet Dad jokes, school leave approval drama, and a pair of broken shoes. On this episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo heads into ‘Chief of War', Apple TV+'s bruising, beautiful, and epic historical saga told largely in the native Hawaiian language and anchored by Jason Momoa as Ka‘iana. The series reframes Hawai‘i's unification through a warrior-exile (Momoa) who's seen the outside world and returns warning that their internal conflict is nothing compared to what's coming. The Season 1 finale arrives September 19th only on Apple TV+ and also stars Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Luciane Buchanan, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, and more. The series is a decade-in-the-making passion project for Momoa, which he also directs, writes, and produces. When asked about the film language he brought as a filmmaker, he doesn't hesitate to admit that he's more comfortable behind the camera. “I'm 100% on the cinematic side of things. As an actor, I'd rather strip away dialogue and tell it with images. Both of my parents were painters. The version of me as a director is completely different than the version of me as an actor.”

This week on Another Pass, Case and Sam are joined by guest Sean Muir to dissect the late '90s sci-fi horror flick Virus—a movie where bad wiring meets worse decisions. Together, they explore the film's potential, its squandered setup, and how it almost became the Event Horizon of killer robot movies. #AnotherPass #Virus1999 #JamieLeeCurtis #DonaldSutherland #SeanMuir #SciFiHorror #FlawedButFascinating Another Pass Full Episode Originally aired: August 22, 2025 Music by Vin Macri and Matt Brogan Podcast Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! The film was released in January 1999, originally scheduled for late 1998, but was a commercial failure, earning only half of its budget back with critical reviews reflecting its shortcomings. Discussion revealed that the movie heavily referenced better films like The Thing and Alien, being described as merely an 'outline of a movie', lacking the depth expected from the genre. The technical achievements of Phil Tippett's animatronics were praised, although criticized for being too bright for the intended horror atmosphere, while CGI elements did not hold up well. Cultural shifts post-9/11 were noted as a change in audience appetite for sci-fi horror, marking an end to the late 90s creature feature trend seen in films like Independence Day. Character development was weak, with the consensus that Billy Baldwin's role could be eliminated without impacting the story; Sherman Augustus's character identified as the most promising but underutilized. Proposed a campier direction for the film, featuring humans viewed as 'uncouth' by aliens, which could yield more engaging content and interactions among the crew. Suggested removing the opening space scene to enhance suspense, providing a fresher take on alien threat revelation and deepening story engagement. Critique noted inconsistencies in character portrayals   Notes ️ Episode Introduction & Setup (00:00 - 10:25) Case Aiken and Sam Alicea welcome guest Sean Muir (Movie Midness) to discuss the 1999 sci-fi horror film 'Virus'. Both Case and Sam were unfamiliar with the film despite it featuring notable actors and being from 1999, highlighting how obscure it became. John Bruno left his VFX supervisor position on Titanic to direct this film, but his career trajectory after this movie remains unclear. The movie appears made for cyberpunk enthusiasts, sci-fi nerds, and specifically mentioned Billy Idol during his cyberpunk phase after missing the T-1000 role in Terminator 2. Movie Plot Summary & Analysis (07:40 - 20:48) Film opens with Russian space station receiving alien energy that transfers to communication ship; American tugboat crew discovers abandoned vessel during hurricane and faces killer machines. Features Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Sutherland, Billy Baldwin, and Cliff Curtis; Sam expresses confusion about Billy Baldwin's casting choices. Film draws heavily from better movies including The Thing, Alien, Event Horizon, and Ghost Ship; described as feeling like an 'outline of a movie'. Movie was a commercial bomb, earning only half its budget back and receiving harsh critical reviews. ️ Technical & Production Discussion (20:49 - 40:48) Phil Tippett's animatronics work praised as excellent, though perhaps too well-lit for horror atmosphere; practical effects hold up better than CGI elements. Late 90s represented end of creature feature era; audiences moving toward CGI spectacle seen in films like Independence Day and Jurassic Park sequels. Discussion of how cultural tastes changed dramatically after 9/11, affecting appetite for this type of sci-fi horror content. Movie reused ship from The Abyss and other James Cameron productions; originally scheduled for 1998 release but moved to January 1999 'dump month'. Character & Story Analysis (40:48 - 01:02:22) Crew relationships underdeveloped compared to superior ensemble films like Aliens; characters lack memorable personality moments. Consensus that Billy Baldwin's character adds nothing to the film and could be completely removed without impact. Sherman Augustus's character Richie identified as film's best, showing intelligence and survival instincts that should have made him the protagonist. Central concept of humans being the 'virus' poorly executed compared to The Matrix (same year) or later films like Arrival. Pitch Session - Campy Direction (01:02:23 - 01:12:53) Proposes making film campier with Galactic Union of Planets deciding humans are 'uncouth' and sending computer virus to eliminate them efficiently. Suggests more scenes of Richie building weapons from robot parts and crew creating makeshift tools for survival. Proposes aliens are annoyed by human space transmissions like 'intergalactic Mormons' constantly trying to make contact. More creative use of ship's manufacturing equipment turned into weapons. Technical Improvement Suggestions (01:12:53 - 01:22:35) Sean criticizes inconsistent Scottish accent performance, suggests either full commitment or using natural voice. Marshall Bell (Woods) needs better pain expression training for nail gun injury scenes. Second wall of hurricane not properly represented with appropriate ship movement and chaos during climax. Movie lacks clear layout understanding, unlike Die Hard's excellent building geography that aids tension. Horror Direction Alternative (01:16:55 - 01:22:35) Remove opening space station scene, make it flashback told by Nadia; focus on mystery and unknown threat. Give Jamie Lee Curtis's Kit Foster more personal stakes and character arc beyond basic competence. Build more suspense through delayed revelation of alien threat; explore 'humans as virus' theme more thoroughly. Better utilize ship's impressive technical areas and create clearer navigation understanding. Wrap-up & Social Media (01:22:35 - 01:27:59) Sean Muir promotes Movie Midness Instagram, Letterboxd, and YouTube profiles featuring movie analysis and model train scene recreations. Thanks to executive producer level supporters including Micah McCaw, Carter Hallett, Sean Muir, and others. Highlander 2: The Quickening announced as next film for discussion. A man of many talents, Cliff Curtis is a Hollywood star hailing all the way from Rotorua. He's known for his metamorphosis, carving out credits in a mixture of major franchises and more personal productions, and his latest project feels like a blend of both. Curtis is starring in Jason Momoa's ‘Chief of War', which tells a tale of the turn of the 18th century, when the four kingdoms of Hawai'i were at war. He told Jack Tame he's very proud and humbled to be a part of this production. “As a storyteller in the screen industry for the last three decades at least, we've managed to tell a variation of stories from our small corner of the world,” Curtis said. “But you know, this series, when led by the likes of Jason Momoa and his co-creator Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, they can bring scale to the narrative.” “It's a big deal for us.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have a movie telling a harrowing true life tale about a deep sea, or saturation, diver in mortal peril this week called “Last Breath.” It stars Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Finn Cole and Cliff Curtis. As you know, there are thousands of miles of pipes in the ocean and somebody has to maintain them. That's where saturation divers come in. They dive to dangerous depths out in the middle of freezing cold, dark oceans, so deep they have to compress and decompress for four days. The movie centers on three divers, Chris, Dave and Duncan, who are all on the same diving team. As you'd imagine, the oceans can get pretty rough and that's what happens in this movie that ends up being one of the reasons for this ordeal. Circumstances have it to where Chris is disconnected from everyone else on the ocean floor with only ten minutes of oxygen. Thanks to the rough oceans, and the ship losing its computerized system that keeps the ship sitting still in one place, the ship gets further and further away from Chris. Can the rest of the crew make it back to Chris in time or will it just be a body recovery operation? Is it worth going to the theater to find out? Check out this episode to find out. “Last Breath” also stars Mark Bonnar, MyAnna Buring, Josef Altin, Bobby Rainsbury, Connor Reed, Nick Biadon and Riz Khan. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series!  Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave.  And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way.  During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic.  Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!It's the future, our sun is dying, and we have a crew of relatable scientists and astronauts on a mission to get to the Sun and re-ignite it so that our planet doesn't freeze.  The crew of the Icarus II includes a physicist (Oscar-Winner Cillian Murphy), a horticulturalist (Oscar-Winner Michelle Yeoh), an engineer (Chris Evans), a navigator (Rose Byrne), a sun-drenched psychologist (Cliff Curtis) and is lead by fearless Captain Kaneda (Emmy-Winner Hiroyuki Sanada).  This space adventure received strong reviews back in 2007 but sadly never received much of a theatrical release and was a box office bomb.  However since then, it has developed a solid cult following not the least of which is due to its iconic score from composer John Murphy.  Let's find out if this crew travels too close to the sun....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker. It's November, so that means it's time for our “Xenovember” series, where we cover movies involving otherworldly creatures! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the divisive 1999 techo-alien nightmare on water, Virus!Splitting headaches! Amusingly-dated 90s computer tech! Flirty chess foreplay! Unconvincing use of nautical terminology! Convenient escape chutes! A fast paced opening! A scene that was possibly referenced in 2022's Moonfall? FleshTech Borganisms! Casual reactions to horrible sights that would make Pinhead blush! An interesting (though occasionally miscast or uncommitted) cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin, an underused Cliff Curtis, the guy with Kuato growing out of him from Total Recall, a scene-stealing Sherman Augustus, and Donald Sutherland making one of the fastest greed-induced descents into madness you've ever seen! Impressive practical FX and animatronics, plus CGI overseen by the legendary Phil Tippett! A compelling argument against wireless technology with topical commentary on humans destroying the planet! All that and more in a film the lead actor claims is the worst movie ever made!In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the new Canadian psychological thriller, Red Rooms, Gaspar Noé's Climax, and Zoe Saldana's new musical crime dramedy, Emilia Pérez! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. “WHY'S EVERYTHING SO BLACK, TOOT?“(CONTENT WARNING: Although this movie was very good, we do have to warn you that it might not be for everyone. The subject matter is difficult and might be triggering for some, as it deals with domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide.)On this episode, we explore mid 90's New Zealand Maori cinema in the critically acclaimed Once Were Warriors, directed by Lee Tamahori. The film stars Rena Owen, Temuera Morrison, and Cliff Curtis, and it is based on the first entry of Alan Duff's book trilogy. We went into this movie blind, only really knowing Temuera Morrison from playing Jango/Boba Fett in Star Wars, and seeing Cliff Curtis show up everywhere from Avatar 2 to Training Day. We took it up after one of Austin's streamer friends RasNoMas, a native Hawaiian, recommended it to cover the podcast. The film was a huge hit in New Zealand when it was originally released in 1994, drawing more at the NZ box office than Jurassic Park! It was released to the states the following year, and almost 20 years later we both watched it for the first time. The film is about a Maori family living in Auckland, New Zealand. Jake, played by Temuera Morrison is at first very charming, but has a violently abusive side to him that terrorizes his whole family. Beth, played by Rena Owen, is trying to be there for her children but is slowly losing them one by one. Throughout the course of the film, we see the family take refuge in parts of the Maori heritage and culture. The great thing about watching films from different periods, from different parts of the world, and from different cultures, is that we get a good luck at what it's like to live in someone else's shoes. Once Were Warrior succeeds here, as it doesn't portray our characters as one dimensional archetypes, but as complex people brought to life by truly phenomenal acting. We hope you enjoy this episode!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o
