In this podcast we are tying into our February theme surrounding the early cinema of one Antoine Fuqua and we are discussing his most highly acclaimed feature Training Day. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how Denzel Washington may have helped Fuqua make this movie, how David Ayer's script is brimming with authenticity and how some people find this brand of writing provocative and whether this movie has two leads or just one. We also talk about seemingly real ramifications of holding a gun sideways, whether Alonso was an undercover cop at all and just how anxiety-inducing it must be to play a hand of poker with a bunch of gangbangers. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the next round of 2024-25 MBA admissions activity; this upcoming week we have more application deadlines, including MIT / Sloan, Texas / McCombs, Florida / Warrington, BYU / Marriott, UC Irvine / Merage, and Toronto / Rotman. INSEAD and NYU / Stern have Round 3 application deadlines, and Maryland / Smith has a Round 4 application deadline. Graham noted two upcoming webinar series. The first is for Deferred Admissions candidates, with signups here: https://bit.ly/de0225 The second webinar series is for Masters in Management candidates, with signups here: https://bit.ly/mim0225 Graham also noted three Real Humans stories from ASU / Carey, Minnesota / Carlson and Georgetown / McDonough's MIM program. Graham highlighted three admissions tips; two of these tips are focused on those who are preparing for MBA admissions interviews, and the third focuses on finalizing MBA admissions essays. Graham then presented the career placement reports from Duke / Fuqua and Georgetown / McDonough. There is now further evidence, and some acknowledgment, of the tougher recruiting environment that MBA graduates are experiencing this season. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from India and is targeting Round 1 for next season. They appear to have a very decent overall profile but have one potential issue with their undergraduate transcript. This week's second MBA candidate also has a very decent profile, overall, with a 695 GMAT score and a strong GPA. They have been working in consulting for four years. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Columbia, Stern, and Duke / Fuqua. They are targeting investment banking and would like to remain in New York City. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. On the latest episode of Beyond the Numbers by Weaver, host James Mihills, partner, Risk Advisory Services at Weaver engages in a comprehensive discussion. The conversation centers around Financial institutions, the tax issues they face, and how to maximize tax savings with Shane Stewart, partner-in-charge, State and Local Tax Services at Weaver, and Blake Fuqua, partner, State and Local Tax Services at Weaver. Key Points: Property taxes can be a major expense for banks, especially with the increasing use of technology and the obsolescence of certain real property assets.Financial institutions should consider new construction-related exemptions for sales tax when expanding their operations or building new locations. Conversely, they should also ensure that contractors are charging sales tax for remodeling services, as these are often considered taxable. Partnering with a state and local tax practice like Weaver's can help banks effectively manage compliance, reduce overpayment risk, handle complex filings, ensure timely payments, and provide peace of mind through compliance evaluations and other specialized services. What do financial institutions need to know about state and local taxes issues, and where are they potentially leaving money on the table? Many financial institutions don't think they need to register or review purchase invoices for sales tax, but improper payment of sales tax can have a detrimental impact on these organizations. Property taxes are another significant expense for entities, but there are several ways to cut the costs of this expense and maximize tax savings if done correctly. This conversation also touches on: Revelations that many financial institutions are overpaying sales tax on IT-related and professional services as technology investments growThe significance of property taxes, the value attached to brick-and-mortar bank locations, and the potential tax savings through correct valuationsThe administrative burden of ensuring tax compliance, the risks of overpayment and underpayment, and the idea of potentially outsourcing these complexities Fuqua explained, “A lot of banks are overpaying sales tax on a lot of IT-related services, data processing, and professional services. There are some recent court cases in the state of Texas and a few other states that really sets some good opportunities available for these financial institutions and banks to take advantage of. So, it's definitely something financial institutions and banks should consider as they increase their operational footprint and spend.” Stewart later added, “One rendition that you're reporting property on could be associated with five different property tax bills, right? And so, just managing the compliance around meeting those requirements each year is a huge task administratively, and it's quite a burden. So you think of the expense — the amount of time and resources it takes to handle this…” Subscribe and listen to future episodes of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
While the Duke Blue Devils get an earned holiday break, the DBR Podcast crew is still hard at work. On Episode 676, we welcome back Ryan Young to the show for an awesome discussion! Ryan Young has graduated from Fuqua and is in the real world, and we figured it was a great time to catch up with the beloved former center to see what he's been up to since he got his Fuqua degree. He's been able to watch several games in person this season as a fan, so we naturally get his thoughts on the current team, how they've been doing, and how he would have fit in the squad had he possessed one final year of eligibility. We also get into the current state of college basketball, from the transfer portal to growing NIL numbers and how teams are affected. Of course, Ryan has a unique perspective as someone whose career started at Northwestern Wildcats as a freshman with no NIL and no transfer portal and ended with a Duke career with an extra year due to Covid and in a world where the transfer portal and NIL exists. He's very candid with his thoughts on how the game has changed from the player's perspective as well as the coach's perspective, and it's great to that he took the time to provide us with that insight. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began with a quick report from Graham on how Clear Admit's first ever in-person event for applicants went in Chicago; spoiler alert: it was a great success! Alex then followed with an update on the latest MBA application decision releases for this season: this week, a few top MBA programs are releasing final decisions for Rounds 3 and 4, including Cornell / Johnson and Georgetown / McDonough; Harvard and UPenn / Wharton are releasing interview invites for their deferred admissions rounds. Graham highlighted the final spring online webinar that Clear Admit is hosting this Wednesday at 12 pm ET, which will feature CMU / Tepper, Columbia, UPenn / Wharton, INSEAD and London Business School. Signups are here: https://www.bit.ly/caspringwebinars Graham then mentioned a recently published Clear Admit admissions tip, regarding background checks on admitted candidates, before moving on to discuss three 'Real Humans Alumni' pieces, an MBA alum from Duke / Fuqua who works at Pfizer, an MBA from Columbia who works in AI for Amazon, and an MBA alum from Chicago / Booth who works at Xbox. We then discussed the MBA Class of 2023 career report from UCLA / Anderson. This report is quite late in the cycle, but highlights the many strengths of the Anderson MBA program, especially if you are interested in being on the West Coast after business school. Finally, we discussed a U.S. Department of Energy competition won by MBA students from Duke / Fuqua. The winning concept related to how to manage power generation when the renewable inputs are variable. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate appears to have a very strong professional career, and is from Latin America. While their GMAT is decent (710), their GPA is the weak point. We discussed strategies to mitigate the lighter GPA. This week's second MBA candidate also has a modest GPA of 3.0. They have a super GMAT (695 on the new version of the test) and appear to have done well in their marketing career, despite navigating a layoff. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between Duke / Fuqua and London Business School. These are two quite different options, and we discussed those differences. They want to be in the United States in the longer term, post MBA. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Do you have some values, ethics or beliefs that relate to your position on this issue?: 2) Does your position on this conflict relate to your history or childhood in some way?: 3) Why is your position on this issue Important to you?: 4) What are your feelings about this issue? (If one of you has Alexythymia you may need more time and space to think about the response to this question).: 5) What is your ideal dream here? If you could waive a magic wand and have exactly what you want what would that look like?: 6) Is there some underlying purpose or goal for you and what is it? In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the MBA application deadlines and interview releases for this season. This week Round 3 continues with several application deadlines, and UPenn / Wharton and Duke / Fuqua are scheduled to release interview invite decisions. Graham started with a story of his random meeting with a podcast listener (and current Wharton student), who he met at a car rental agency. Graham then highlighted the May 15th event we are hosting in Chicago, which will be Clear Admit's first in-person MBA candidate event. Signups are here: https://www.bit.ly/cachicagofair Graham also noted the Spring Online Webinar series that Clear Admit is hosting, with signups here: https://www.bit.ly/caspringwebinars We then had a discussion about the recently published 2024 U.S. News MBA ranking of U.S. based MBA programs. For the second year in row, there is a significant emphasis on career outcomes in this ranking, rather than an emphasis on the quality of the incoming class. Some of the order of the ranking appears to be off, as a consequence of this. Graham highlighted a recently published admissions tip focused on the waitlist, which also provides direct access to a video that we hosted for the Admissions Academy. This video is now freely available for all to watch. Graham then noted three Real Humans Alumni pieces, alums from: Cornell / Johnson working at Amazon, Columbia working at Google, and Georgetown / McDonough working at Johnson & Johnson. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate is applying next season. They have decent numbers, with a 3.72 GPA and 326 GRE. They have 3 years of work experience in consulting. We discussed what they might do to improve their overall profile, over the next several months. This week's second MBA candidate has recently left their work, to take a break, before starting business school. They appear to have a strong professional record at top tech companies, and a decent GPA. They have gained a test waiver to the programs they are targeting; we are not convinced that's the right approach. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between Northwestern / Kellogg, Duke / Fuqua (with money) and IESE. They also need to consider their spouse's options, as they weigh whether to do an MBA in Europe or the United States. This episode was recorded in Schenectady, New York, USA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Each of these topics is discussed in detail and some of the issues addressed are: Gaps in identity and not knowing how you're perceived. What does it mean to be autistic? Understanding your neurodivergence can be life changing and empowering. How do you look at your relationship through a new lens when you know you're a neurodiverse couple? When you don't understand your communication differences, emotional needs, socializing differences and then you discover you're a neurodiverse couple. Knowing the why behind why you're having challenges as a couple. The stigma around autism can make the discussion challenging. Lead with love and curiosity. Ask yourself why it's so important for your partner to receive a diagnosis when they are unidentified? It may be helpful to talk about autistic traits or neurodivergence. Both partners need to be growing and become more self aware. But you may be growing at different speeds. Look at the different options ND couples can consider in their relationship. Creative solutions are okay. Our journey's can look very different. Know your boundaries. Monotropism-a persons tendency to focus their attention on a small number of things. Lends itself to intense experiences, deep thinking and flow states. Can contribute to context blindness. Autistic inertia. Validate and support your partner's passions and self interests and negotiate how they can shift when needed. Capacity and stress may contribute to more monotropism. Welcome the questions your partner asks when you talk about your passion or special interests. It feels good and calms your nervous system when you know your partner has heard and understood you. Processing preferences and needs. Persistent Demand for Autonomy (PDA). Being flexible regarding decision making. Not understanding lack of follow through. Losing trust and respect for your partner. Using affirmation instead of making a request for more demands. Talking about intent and process is so important. Making your partner feel good about themselves rather than demanding something. Getting information from porn. Having a curiosity lens. Being hyper-sexual can be a form of self regulation. Alcohol can be used to help reduce intimacy issues. Sexual routines may be used to help pleasure your partner and sometimes this may feel robotic. It is easier to navigate sex when you have structures and know what works. Understanding sexual diversity. You learn by reflecting on experience…debrief with your partner. Passive vs active touch. Feeling rejected. Breaching physical boundaries when not ready or prepared. Being ready when our partner wants to connect. Sensory issues that we may not understand. Asking before engaging in physical touch. Cuddling may be overwhelming or overstimulating. In this latest episode of the Born to Watch Podcast, hosts Whitey and Gow, along with special guest Sloane Nickson, dive into the 2007 action-packed thriller, "Shooter". Directed by Antoine Fuqua and based on the novel "Point of Impact" by Stephen Hunter, "Shooter" follows the story of Bob Lee Swagger (played by Mark Wahlberg), a former Marine Corps sniper who is coaxed back into action only to be framed for a crime he didn't commit. "Shooter" starts with a bang, quite literally, setting the tone for a film that's both intense and complex. The narrative quickly evolves, presenting viewers with a puzzle that is as political as it is personal. Wahlberg's character, Swagger, is a man of few words but immense skill, drawn out of a self-imposed exile to prevent an assassination attempt on the President. However, the plot takes a dark turn when Swagger is betrayed, and framed for the assassination he was trying to prevent. The film's plot is a rollercoaster of twists and turns, each meticulously crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.Mark Wahlberg delivers one of his career-best performances as Swagger, embodying the role of the disillusioned yet highly capable marksman. His portrayal is both nuanced and powerful, bringing depth to a character that could easily have been one-dimensional. The supporting cast, including Michael Peña as FBI Agent Nick Memphis and Danny Glover as Colonel Isaac Johnson, provide solid performances that add layers to the story. However, it is Wahlberg's portrayal of Swagger's journey from isolation to redemption that stands as the film's emotional core.Beyond its action-packed surface, "Shooter" delves into themes of corruption, betrayal, and the search for justice. The film critiques the manipulation and exploitation inherent in the military and governmental institutions, making a poignant statement about the sacrifices of soldiers and the often murky ethics of those in power. Swagger's quest for truth and vindication is not just a personal journey but a commentary on the struggle against systemic injustice.Antoine Fuqua's direction is precise and compelling, balancing intense action sequences with moments of poignant introspection. The cinematography, led by Peter Menzies Jr., captures the expansive landscapes and tight, tense atmospheres with equal skill, highlighting the film's diverse settings from remote mountains to urban sprawls. The action sequences are particularly noteworthy, choreographed and shot in a way that feels both realistic and exhilarating.Since its release in 2007, "Shooter" has garnered a dedicated fan base, appreciating its blend of action, suspense, and moral complexity. It has spurred discussions about the representation of military veterans in cinema and the ethical dilemmas faced by those who serve. The film's impact goes beyond entertainment, prompting viewers to consider the real-world implications of the themes it explores."Shooter" is a film that manages to be both a thrilling action ride and a thought-provoking exploration of deeper themes. Mark Wahlberg's performance, coupled with Fuqua's direction and compelling narrative, makes for a film that is engaging from start to finish. As Whitey, Damo, and Sloane Nickson discuss in this episode of the Born to Watch Podcast, "Shooter" stands as a testament to the power of cinema to entertain, challenge, and inspire. It's a film that not only marksman enthusiasts will appreciate but also those who value storytelling that dares to address the complexities of justice, loyalty, and redemption. In wrapping up this review for the Born to Watch Podcast, "Shooter" is a film that certainly hits its target, offering a blend of action and substance that is as rare as it is captivating. Whether you're a first-time viewer or returning to appreciate its intricacies, "Shooter" is a film that continues to resonate, proving itself to be a noteworthy entry in the action genre and beyond. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the MBA application deadlines and decision notifications for this season. Interview invites for Round 2 are now coming to an end as schools have shifted into handing out admissions decisions. Speaking of which, UPenn / Wharton, Yale SOM, Harvard, London Business School, Stanford, Northwestern / Kellogg, and Washington / Foster are releasing their final Round 2 results next week. Best of luck to everyone awaiting word! Graham highlighted the new Spring survey that Clear Admit is running, to get a better sense of how MBA candidates select their target programs. Answering this survey really helps Clear Admit better understand the MBA community, and provides great insights for top MBA programs. The survey is here: https://bit.ly/caspringsurvey Graham then mentioned a Clear Admit event, with CMU / Tepper, which focuses on the MBA for non-traditional candidates. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/nontradMBA Graham also shared tidbits from four Real Humans Alumni pieces: alums from Harvard, working at PepsiCo, Stanford working at Uber, Berkeley / Haas working at Nike and Yale SOM working at EY-Parthenon. Finally we discussed the first in Clear Admit's series of post-MBA career reports. This one focuses on finance careers, and shows quite clearly which are the best MBA programs for buy-side finance roles, as well as for roles in investment banking. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate has very respectable numbers, with a 730 GMAT and 3.54 GPA. They began their career in oil and gas, and more recently are working in the area of carbon capture. They are really targeting the very top programs, which we think they have a realistic chance to attain. This week's second MBA candidate has an outstanding profile, all around. They have a fantastic GPA, complemented by a 730 GMAT. They have very decent work experience, with progressive roles, and their additional volunteer activities look good, too. We recommend they stick to one post-MBA short term goal, while targeting the very best MBA programs and considering geography as well. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between Dartmouth / Tuck, Duke / Fuqua and UVA / Darden. They have a very good scholarship offer from Fuqua, which may tip the balance in their favor. They are still waiting to hear back from Northwestern / Kellogg. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. They share some of the lessons they both learned, things they now understand and would have done differently, as well as the strengths in their co-parenting relationships. In addition, they address many other topics including: Having shame around parenting because it can reveal some of our issues around neurodivergence. ND mind needs time to recover and the parenting demands may make it seem like they don't have space to recover. Being great in emergency and crisis situations. Hyperfocus can be very helpful. Needing to engage in activities and having a role during an event. When only one parent goes to most school activities, birthday parties and other events that involve other kids. Identify your stylistic differences, preferences, strengths and roles as parents. Sensory overload and not knowing your sensory profile can create lots of challenges. Parents may experience emotional overload or overwhelm because they don't understand each other's neurological differences. One parent may be the safe person for the children to go to. May feel like you have an angry and unavailable partner. Try not to identify your partner by their most vulnerable and difficult moments. The importance of recognizing relational trauma and neurodivergence legacy. Understanding that our neurodivergent traits may be passed down to our children. Take time to talk to your child about how you may not have been able to meet their needs. How alexithymia may impact the parent-child dynamic. Not being able to tolerate highly emotional situations like screaming or intense crying. Kids may feel like they have to “walk on eggshells” with a parent. Understanding how screaming or shutting down can impact your children. Understanding an ND partner may not engage in certain parenting responsibilities because they don't want to get it wrong. One parent may experience shame around what they feel they can't do as a parent. Your passions or special interests may be places where you can bond and connect with your kids. Kids attune to each parent and seek “attachment” Be a student to your kid and learn from them and understand their needs and personality. The way your family thrives may be SO different from other families...and that's okay. Understand that the maintenance of your relationship with your college age or adult child may change. The need for mutuality and reciprocity. Being clear about what the adult child needs from their parent. When you feel something positive about your child tell them. Connect with your adult child on a regular basis and consider adding a reminder to your calendar to reach out to them. Greg has this dynamic in his marriage and Mona had this dynamic in her 30 year marriage, so they both share a lot of their personal experiences, as well as those they have seen in other couples with these mixed neurotypes. The topics addressed include: Externalized energy vs internalized energy. One partner may be a "bridge" for the other. Differences and overlaps and shared understanding. Anxious pursuer vs avoidant. Timing is the key to find moments to connect. In-depth knowledge vs chasing a new thing. External calm and patience vs lots of outer energy and a desire for change. Having different processing preferences. Ability to jump around vs going deep with one subject. The need for autonomy and freedom or feeling like you have to repress your needs. Understanding emotional dysregulation and self-soothing. Being hyperverbal vs hypoverbal. How knowing each other's neurotypes can help explain why you both may be having challenges. Tracking each others mood and stress and attuning to each other, rather then judging and creating conflict. Valuing each others different processing styles. Understanding unidentified sensitivities. Being vulnerable vs intellectualizing emotions and growing in emotional vulnerability. Focusing on your strengths and connection as a couple can help you rebuild and transform your relationship. The other topics discussed include: Understanding your partners "owners manual", which includes their history, trauma, what they need for repair after conflict, their neurotype, love language, deficits, strengths, relational trauma and triggers. The importance of reciprocity and mutuality. Remembering that relationships require maintenance. Engaging in small gestures that address each others needs and wants. Preparation and negotiation are important in a mixed neurotype relationship. When your "love tank" is empty it is very easy to have raw and hurtful experiences. Understanding what leads to a culture of appreciation and reciprocity. Healthy internalization rather then toxic externalization. Talk about processes so both partners understand what happened. Being romantic and vulnerable can feel "too much". Alexythymia and love can create "short circuits". Internalizing things can give very little space for interaction with your partner. Being shamed for having intense feelings and how important it is to create safety in your relationship for sharing your feelings and emotions. If you have positive thoughts about your partner...say it! Own what's yours and understand your triggers. Understand and take care of your hurt "parts" and wounds. During this episode and many more throughout the season, Greg Fuqua, LMHC is co-hosting the podcast with Mona Kay. The topics addressed include:◦ Connection with people when it's within your partners capacity. ◦ Bowing out of planned events and experiencing questioning and disappointment from family members when they don't understand.◦ Experiencing anxiety when asking for your needs to be met.◦ When you aren't “out” to everyone in your family about being neurodivergent.◦ Having a specific role at family events can be very important to help get connection to self.◦ The importance of downtime and a transition period.◦ Understanding what each partner needs during socializing.◦ Social differences are not deficits.◦ Plan and prepare beforehand, so you know what is coming and what the expectations are.◦ Having an exit plan and having support around that is important.◦ Needing a way for self-soothing, alone time and recovery.◦ Running late because you may not understand each others needs.◦ Taking separate cars to an event can be helpful.◦ Reducing anxiety by planning and preparing together, then debrief after the event to learn what you can each do better in the future.◦ Including both "open" and "down" time into the socializing event can be helpful. May also want to schedule in time for your partners special interest.◦ Remember that everyone wants to be seen, known, valued and understood.◦ Past relational trauma may impact decision making around socializing and date nights.◦ Family time with kids can also be challenging because the “expectations” may never stop.◦ Be aware of sensory overload or overstimulation.◦ Understanding that change of plans may be difficult and lead to anger or irritability.◦ Develop habits and rituals around communication.◦ Make sure your autistic partner has time for recovery.◦ Understand your capacity and how much you can socialize based on the stress you have experienced that day.If you would like to contact Greg Fuqua, please check out his website at: www.gregfuqua.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/neurodiverse-love/message

"Training Day," released in 2001 and directed by Antoine Fuqua, was a significant milestone in the crime thriller genre, largely due to the transformative performance of Denzel Washington. The film follows the corrupt and morally ambiguous Detective Alonzo Harris (played by Washington) as he takes rookie cop Jake Hoyt (played by Ethan Hawke) under his wing for a day of training on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Denzel Washington's portrayal of the charismatic yet morally bankrupt Alonzo was a standout in the film, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor. The production team worked extensively to create a gritty and immersive portrayal of urban life, with Fuqua and his cinematographer, Mauro Fiore, capturing the tension and danger of the streets, providing a vivid backdrop for the film's intense drama. "Training Day" was filmed on location in Los Angeles, giving the movie an authentic feel and a sense of place. The production team collaborated with the LAPD to ensure accuracy in the depiction of police procedures, adding a layer of realism to the story. The film's exploration of police corruption and moral dilemmas, combined with Washington and Hawke's compelling performances, contributed to its critical acclaim and commercial success, solidifying its status as a modern classic in the crime thriller genre. Joseph Fuqua played JEB Stuart in "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals". This is his second time on Addressing Gettysburg (his first appearance is still available on Patreon). In October of 2022, Joseph came to town to shoot video with Garry Adelman for the ABT's special videos honoring the 30th anniversary of the movie. We goofed around all day and decided to do another interview after lunch, but we were tired after lunch and ended up having a less-goofy conversation about his career as an actor and the craft of acting. Goofiness still popped its head up now and then. Normally, this would live on our Patreon account, but, in honor of the anniversary, we are releasing this for free for its premiere. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the upcoming Round 1 deadlines for this new season; for this week NYU / Stern, IESE, Cornell / Johnson and Chicago / Booth all have their Round 1 MBA application deadlines; Duke / Fuqua is scheduled to release interview invites for its Early Action round. Graham highlighted our next Essay Insights series, which continues on Wednesday of this week, with CMU / Tepper, Columbia, Georgetown / McDonough, Texas / McCombs and UNC / Kenan Flagler; these events are very popular and bring together the leading MBA programs to talk about their admissions essay topics. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cafallessays Graham then shared some insights from a recently published Adcom Q&A from Shelly Heinrich at Georgetown McDonough. Our final discussion focused on the recently published MBA class profile for Duke / Fuqua. Their class profile matched some of the observations we identified with the class profile of UCLA / Anderson (the class profile we discussed on last week's show). Fuqua is reporting a smaller class size, while keeping the quality of the class close to constant. We did also discuss the ranges of test scores and GPAs, but we think candidates would prefer to know the medians, or both. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from India - and therefore is over-represented in the pool. At the same time, they appear to have very good numbers and strong work experience, balanced by decent volunteer activities outside of work. They are not over-reaching with their target programs in the first round, and we wonder if they should have targeted 1-2 M7 level programs. This week's second MBA candidate is also a strong candidate, based in the U.S. An All-American athlete from a top liberal arts college, they are working in consulting (MBB) with a focus on the climate. Their only weaker area is a slightly lower-than-average-for-top-programs GRE score. Should they apply in Round 1 with this score (325) or delay to Round 2 with a higher score. We think the latter might be a good strategy, or at least split the applications over two rounds. The final MBA candidate is an entrepreneur who has a great GRE score (333) but a poor GPA (2.9). While they have an upward trend for the GPA, they will need to use the optional essay to add context. They might also consider taking Business Fundamentals, or other similar options to show that they are prepared and committed to the academic aspect of the MBA experience. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. For this week's main podcast review, I was joined by Dan Bayer just a day before I left for the Telluride Film Festival to record so we would have something for you all to listen to today. We're reviewing the latest film from filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, "The Equalizer 3," starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar & Remo Girone. The third and final film in Fuqua and Washington's violent, action-packed justice trilogy loosely based on the television show of the same name, the third outing finds Robert McCall trying to enjoy his retirement in Italy when trouble comes knocking on his door yet again. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the violence, action, performance from Denzel Washington, and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy!
