Black on Black Cinema reviews Michael (2026), Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson biopic starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop. While Jaafar delivers a great impression of his uncle Michael, the film itself is a shallow, sanitized music biopic that refuses to engage with Jackson's complexity and controversies. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) crafts a visually stunning but emotionally hollow portrait that hits every musical biopic cliché—rise to fame, family dysfunction, creative genius, tragic decline, and rise again without taking risks or offering fresh insight into one of music's most complicated icons. We break down why the film fails despite strong performances, analyzing how it sidesteps difficult questions about Jackson's life, allegations, and legacy in favor of a safe, reverential approach. The Thriller recreation is impressive, the musical sequences are well-executed, and Jaafar's physical transformation is remarkable—but beneath the spectacle lies a film afraid to be honest about its subject. We discuss what a truly great Michael Jackson film would require, compare it to other music biopics, examine the Jackson estate's involvement and creative control, and explore why Hollywood keeps making shallow biopics instead of complex character studies. Essential viewing for understanding how NOT to make a music biopic.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. We review Black films across every genre — from Black horror and Black sci-fi to indie dramas, comedies, and blockbuster action. Covering filmmakers like Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, and more. Hosted by Jay, Micah, Terrence, and T'ara. Featured on RogerEbert.com. A TNP Studios production.
Send us Fan MailWe finally saw Michael — Antoine Fuqua's long-awaited biopic about the King of Pop — and we have thoughts. Dan and Mike break down Jaafar Jackson's performance as his legendary uncle, the film's decision to sidestep the 1993 allegations entirely, and whether the finished product does justice to one of the most complicated legacies in music history. We get into what Fuqua gets right — the recreation of Thriller, the Jackson 5 years, the raw energy of Michael on stage — and what the film conspicuously leaves out. With a 97% audience score and only a 38% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Michael has sparked a real fan-versus-critic divide, and we fall somewhere in between. If you've seen it, you know there's a lot to unpack. If you haven't, consider this your spoiler-friendly guide to whether it's worth the trip to the theater.Oh Brother Podcast:Support the Show!

“Michael”—a new film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, charting Michael Jackson's rise to fame—just had the best opening weekend in the history of bio-pics, proving that audiences are still eager to celebrate the King of Pop. The movie also ends, pointedly, before the first in a series of allegations of child sexual abuse that have tainted Jackson's reputation ever since. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and their fellow staff writer Kelefa Sanneh consider how the unprecedented highs and horrific lows of Jackson's life and career have made him a prism for modern ideas about stardom and power. Sanneh's recent Profile of Fuqua details the Jackson estate's involvement in the production, which resulted in a sanitized portrait of a deeply complex figure. Other works have assessed Jackson's legacy more critically: the 2019 documentary “Leaving Neverland” lays out, in granular detail, the claims of two of Jackson's accusers. “It's just such a dissonance, seeing these two texts in such close proximity,” Fry says. “The thing with ‘Michael' is, it doesn't separate the art from the artist. It separates the artist from the wrongdoing entirely.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Michael” (2026)Michael Jackson's “Thriller”Michael Jackson's “Dangerous”“The Action-Film Director Who's Taking On Michael Jackson,” by Kelefa Sanneh (The New Yorker)“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV” (2024)“I'm Glad My Mom Died,” by Jennette McCurdy“On Michael Jackson,” by Margo Jefferson“Leaving Neverland” (2019)Michael Jackson's “Off the Wall”“Justin Bieber, Pop Music's Fallen Angel, Rises Again at Coachella,” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker)New episodes drop every Thursday. It follows the life of the American singer Michael Jackson, covering his involvement in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the 1980s Bad tour. Jackson is portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson and as a child by Juliano Krue Valdi, both in their film debuts. The supporting cast includes Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo.Development began in November 2019, when it was reported that the producer Graham King had secured the rights to produce a film about Jackson, with Logan attached to write. Lionsgate Films announced the film in February 2022. Fuqua was announced as the director in January 2023, and casting began that month when Jaafar was cast; further casting took place from January to April 2024. After delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming took place between January and May 2024. Despite the criticism, Fuqua defended the film, asserting the goal was to present a balanced view of Jackson's life, stating, "You're telling somebody's life, you want to make sure that they're happy," adding that he aimed to reveal "the good, bad, and the ugly." The film comes amid decades of scrutiny regarding Jackson's legacy, including accusations of sexual abuse and his untimely death in 2009 at age 50 due to cardiac arrest linked to propofol use.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
This week on End Credits, we find a good Rip. In fact, it's a Rip of a Rip, one of the greatest Rips you will ever see. Boy howdy, are we using the word "Rip" a lot in the new Netflix movie The Rip, which is the title were reviewing today. In other news, we will continue with our celebration of Black Heritage Month by doing a deep dive on another great Black director. This Wednesday, February 18, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: Black Heritage Month Special: The Movies of Antoine Fuqua. We've done the legend, we've done the indie darling, and now we're doing the populist. Antoine Fuqua started in music videos and graduated to features with the little-seen The Replacement Killers, but his breakthrough was Training Day, which scored Denzel Washington his second Oscar. Washington, one of Fuqua's regular contributors. also led the other move we'll talk about, The Magnificent Seven. REVIEW: The Rip (2026). Based on a true store about Miami cops that found $20 million in drug money hidden in the walls of a home, The Rip takes things in a decidedly dingy direction, a morality play in the best tradition of Narc filmmaker Joe Carnahan. In this one, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon lead of a team of overworked, underpaid cops who find $20 million in a wall, and then all hell breaks loose. Who can they trust? Can they trust each other? A low stakes, high drama crime movie is the epitome of a "Dumpuary" classic, but can The Rip get us there? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Dennis Fuqua currently serves as the Director of the International Renewal Ministries. Originally from Gig Harbor, Washington, Dennis received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Divinity degrees from Multnomah University. He served as a pastor of Peninsula Christian Fellowship in Gig Harbor for 25 years. Dennis began working as the director of IRM in February 2000. His leadership activities include facilitating summits, equipping others, and developing and maintaining relationship connections with the network of people in IRM. He has written multiple articles and three books available at www.lppress.net. Dennis and his wife, Marilyn, have 4 grown children and 13 grandkids. He can be emailed at: dennis@prayersummits.net. In this podcast, Dennis talks about the incredible impact he consistently sees among those who attend a prayer summit. Genuine miracles take place as people unite and enter God's manifest presence. And, when that happens, Dennis has seen how God then showers His love on those attending, often leading them into new paths for their lives. Dennis also regularly sees the development of new and lasting friendships among those who attend, and how often even fractured relationships between people are wonderfully restored. In all, God is greatly glorified and virtually everyone in attendance is richly blessed. Spending 2 1/2 days in a prayer summit is like investing a small amount of money in a business, but reaping a huge return.

In this episode of Full Disclosure – Live!, DebtBook product leaders Stephen Yokim and James Perez sit down with Joey Fuqua, Finance Director for the City of Henderson, North Carolina, to discuss modernization, resilience, and what's ahead for a small city on the cusp of growth. In early 2024, a ransomware attack disrupted Henderson's access to critical financial data and reporting systems. Amid the challenge of restoring operations, DebtBook played a key role in helping the city maintain audit compliance and keep essential reporting processes running smoothly. Joey reflects on the experience as both a test of resilience and a turning point in how Henderson approaches data security and cloud-based systems moving forward. Joey traces his ten years in Henderson, describing how he replaced paper-heavy workflows with automation which improved controls and generated more than $150,000 in unbudgeted bank rebates. He shares why Henderson adopted DebtBook for GASB lease and subscription compliance and how he's now evaluating a move from debt spreadsheets to DebtBook's debt management module for added resilience. Looking ahead, Joey shares some of Henderson's opportunities: proximity to the Research Triangle, two interstates, and a $100M+ regional water plant upgrade that will double capacity and support new development. With council transitions and zoning work underway, he's focused on positioning the city for sustainable growth after decades of industrial change. Top Takeaways: (1) Cyber Lessons, The Hard Way: A late-February ransomware incident wiped local files, showing the need for independent backups, cloud-first operations, and rigorous vendor oversight. (2) Hands-On Partnership Matters: DebtBook proactively reached out, restored access to key records already in the platform, and guided workflows, helping Henderson stay audit-ready while other systems were rebuilt. (3) Positioned for Growth: With proximity to the Research Triangle, two interstates, and a $100M+ regional water plant upgrade set to double capacity, Henderson is aligning infrastructure and governance to capture incoming development.

The second Trump administration has spent 2025 accelerating its software modernization initiatives through the creation of agencies like the U.S. DOGE Service and other entities designed to digitize and modernize the American government. Modeling after DOD enterprise software container platforms, the Department of Veterans Affairs stood up its own Platform One application in 2021 to drive software modernization within the agency. Matthew Fuqua, technical lead at VA's Platform One, told GovCIO Media & Research Platform One is a sandbox environment where software developers can safely experiment and build applications using protected data. He said his team took inspiration from similar endeavors in federal government and built a platform where developers can focus their efforts solely on coding. Fuqua said that Platform One's ethos centered around “speed, stability, scale and security,” and each tenet drives the mission of providing services through software that can benefit veterans. Platform One supports the VA's DevSecOps strategy to streamline its operations and shift away from the traditional waterfall approach to software development that hinders innovation at speed. In a DevSecOps environment, Fuqua's team is able to monitor, update and secure troves of data rapidly, shortening processes that used to take days down to hours. Fuqua said that AI has opened the door to new potential applications but data security is paramount when considering building new software.

In this podcast we are tying into our February theme surrounding the early cinema of one Antoine Fuqua and we are discussing his most highly acclaimed feature Training Day. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how Denzel Washington may have helped Fuqua make this movie, how David Ayer's script is brimming with authenticity and how some people find this brand of writing provocative and whether this movie has two leads or just one. We also talk about seemingly real ramifications of holding a gun sideways, whether Alonso was an undercover cop at all and just how anxiety-inducing it must be to play a hand of poker with a bunch of gangbangers. On the latest episode of Beyond the Numbers by Weaver, host James Mihills, partner, Risk Advisory Services at Weaver engages in a comprehensive discussion. The conversation centers around Financial institutions, the tax issues they face, and how to maximize tax savings with Shane Stewart, partner-in-charge, State and Local Tax Services at Weaver, and Blake Fuqua, partner, State and Local Tax Services at Weaver. Key Points: Property taxes can be a major expense for banks, especially with the increasing use of technology and the obsolescence of certain real property assets.Financial institutions should consider new construction-related exemptions for sales tax when expanding their operations or building new locations. Conversely, they should also ensure that contractors are charging sales tax for remodeling services, as these are often considered taxable. Partnering with a state and local tax practice like Weaver's can help banks effectively manage compliance, reduce overpayment risk, handle complex filings, ensure timely payments, and provide peace of mind through compliance evaluations and other specialized services. What do financial institutions need to know about state and local taxes issues, and where are they potentially leaving money on the table? Many financial institutions don't think they need to register or review purchase invoices for sales tax, but improper payment of sales tax can have a detrimental impact on these organizations. Property taxes are another significant expense for entities, but there are several ways to cut the costs of this expense and maximize tax savings if done correctly. This conversation also touches on: Revelations that many financial institutions are overpaying sales tax on IT-related and professional services as technology investments growThe significance of property taxes, the value attached to brick-and-mortar bank locations, and the potential tax savings through correct valuationsThe administrative burden of ensuring tax compliance, the risks of overpayment and underpayment, and the idea of potentially outsourcing these complexities Fuqua explained, “A lot of banks are overpaying sales tax on a lot of IT-related services, data processing, and professional services. There are some recent court cases in the state of Texas and a few other states that really sets some good opportunities available for these financial institutions and banks to take advantage of. So, it's definitely something financial institutions and banks should consider as they increase their operational footprint and spend.” Stewart later added, “One rendition that you're reporting property on could be associated with five different property tax bills, right? And so, just managing the compliance around meeting those requirements each year is a huge task administratively, and it's quite a burden. So you think of the expense — the amount of time and resources it takes to handle this…” Subscribe and listen to future episodes of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
While the Duke Blue Devils get an earned holiday break, the DBR Podcast crew is still hard at work. On Episode 676, we welcome back Ryan Young to the show for an awesome discussion! Ryan Young has graduated from Fuqua and is in the real world, and we figured it was a great time to catch up with the beloved former center to see what he's been up to since he got his Fuqua degree. He's been able to watch several games in person this season as a fan, so we naturally get his thoughts on the current team, how they've been doing, and how he would have fit in the squad had he possessed one final year of eligibility. We also get into the current state of college basketball, from the transfer portal to growing NIL numbers and how teams are affected. Of course, Ryan has a unique perspective as someone whose career started at Northwestern Wildcats as a freshman with no NIL and no transfer portal and ended with a Duke career with an extra year due to Covid and in a world where the transfer portal and NIL exists. He's very candid with his thoughts on how the game has changed from the player's perspective as well as the coach's perspective, and it's great to that he took the time to provide us with that insight.
