The Challenge, directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Scott Glenn, is not the greatest film in the world. It was certainly not the greatest film to come out in 1982, but it's about a giant white dipshit living in Japan and making an ass of himself. And as a giant white dipshit who lives in Japan who routinely makes an ass of himself, I felt seen. Although I've killed far less people than Scott Glenn does in this movie (at least, so far). Fellow American in Japan Diamond Feit joins me to talk about this very silly film.

In addition to Eastwood, Absolute Power stars Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert. In Absolute Power, Eastwood plays Luther Whitney, a master thief who makes the fateful decision to rob billionaire Walter Sullivan, a close friend and ally of the president of the United States. Sullivan, who witnesses the altercation, escapes with evidence of the killing. When he becomes prime suspect in an investigation led by local police, Whitney devotes himself to exposing the president's misdeed while evading Sullivan's hired assassin — who believes Whitney is responsible — as well as a secret service agent who wants to silence the only witness. Kicking off a new episode cycle about "Musicians on Film", Julian, Emilio and Madeline hop on a three-wheeled motorcycle and revisit a movie they've previously seen and admired: Robert Altman's 1975 epic 'Nashville', a five-day, criss-crossing journey through the country music capital. The trio do their best to make sense of the many disparate things that take place in its unusual narrative, and discuss scenes and characters that have outsized importance in their own personal experiences watching the film. They discuss at length the film's many musician/actors, the songs they sing (many they wrote themselves), and the respect to the work Altman demonstrates in showing most of these musical performances in full. With three down and only two best picture nominees from 1975 left to discuss, might there be plans to discuss all of them before long? DISCLAIMER: While they are current events related to our discussion of 'Nashville', the passing of actress Shelley Duvall and the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump are not discussed here because this conversation was recorded before either incident took place. Backdraft is a 1991 American film that's part crime thriller, part family drama, part love story, part bildungsroman, and part macho bullshit directed by Ron Howard and written by Gregory Widen. The stacked cast features Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Scott Glenn, Rebecca De Mornay, Robert De Niro, J. T. Walsh, and the late great Donald Sutherland. The film is about two estranged firefighter brothers who dodge flaming buildings and family therapy alike while unraveling an arson conspiracy hotter than their sibling rivalry. Welcome to the 4th episode of our Trilogies series. We hope you enjoyed our last episode where we looked at The Dollars Trilogy from Sergio Leone. On this episode, we look back at some favourites from our childhood that we watched quite a bit on VHS. We are going to be looking at the original Jack Ryan trilogy that consists of The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger that starred Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. The main character created by thriller author Tom Clancy who appeared in multiple books by the author. The three early Jack Ryan films were seminal thrillers of the early to mid 90s. Proper Dad thrillers. Fun and memorable films with excellent all star casts that included actors such as Sean Connery, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Fred Thompson, Sean Bean and Anne Archer. All three films are well directed by directors who understood the action and thriller genres: John McTiernan and Phillip Noyce. Bret Berg from the Museum of Home Video and the American Genre Film Archive joins us and he has chosen a pair of made for TV movies ranging from 70s horror to 1990s ripped-from-the-headlines true crime. Our first feature is GARGOYLES (1972) one of the many TV terrors that scarred Gen-Xer childhoods. Cornel Wilde and Jennifer Salt are a father-daughter team of occult researchers who discover a race of living gargoyles in the caves of New Mexico. Former SF 49er and LA Ram Bernie Casey in full-body Sam Winston make-up effects plays the winged-stuff of nightmares as the Gargoyles' leader + Scott Glenn as a young dirt bike punk! Then, Kellie Martin is an ambitious nerd girl who murders mean girl Tori Spelling in DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER aka A FRIEND TO DIE FOR, the most watched TV movie of 1994, if Wikipedia is to be believed. The film is based on the true story of 15-year old Kirsten Costas who was stabbed to death by a classmate, Bernadette Protti, on June 23, 1984. While this movie is a departure from what we'd usually program on OMFYS, something about it dredged up Cory's memories of being accused of horrible animal mutilations because he was the only goth kid at his high school, and Bob found parallels to a murder near San Francisco that his mom was briefly suspected of. This movie may have been even more traumatizing than GARGOYLES! In the opening segment, Bob, Bret and Cory talk about other made-for-TV horror movies, and the inspiration behind The Museum of Home Video, his weekly "found-footage variety show for stoners, seekers, archivists and drinkers." Bob brings up The California Music Channel, the San Francisco Bay Area's public access answer to MTV, which is something he hasn't thought about since the 80s. Cory counters with The Box, Los Angeles' music video request show. Is there a hyperlocal Chicago or Milwaukee version of MTV? We want to know! Be sure to check out Bret Berg's weekly live stream of media weirdness Tuesday nights at 7:30 pm PST at www.museumofhomevideo.com Thanks Bret. Oh wow. We've got a heater of an episode for you today. This time around, Sean and Brad are joined by first ever Queen Venerator guest Joe to discuss the work of Japanese video game publisher FromSoftware. Kind of. Look, there's a decent amount of discussion about FromSoft throughout their long, illustrious history, and yes Joe does a wonderful job conveying the true emotional pull these games can have on people, and yes we discuss Joe's infamously peculiar FromSoft collection. But lets face it, the Queen Venerator crew get distracted easily, so they break off into a multitude of tangents. The topics discussed are as wide-ranging as the Nick Jr. show Little Bear, David the Gnome, Total Recall, Shogun, Michael Mann specifically The Keep this time, Scott Glenn (of course), The Wire, Joe Lieberman meeting the Mortal Kombat Toasty guy in hell (I know its Dan Forden, calm down), the death of the Twitch Watch Party, Dan Ryckert's joy about Event Horizon, the 1991 Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo anime movie Roujin Z, the 1980 Troma released, kids-as-zombie-microwaves movie The Children, Cutlery Corner, MORE Siskel and Ebert talk, The Black Stallion: the greatest movie of ours and any generation, Justin Wong at Evo, Brad's continued Dead Cells obsession, Sean sneaking off to make memes, Sean surrupticiously eating a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, Maria Menounos and her cook books, Cheddar TV: TV for gas stations, Dragons Dogma 2 meat, Brad explains the Goo Crew and Joey's World Tour, Helldivers, Graveyard Keeper, those fake bowling animation videos, Ninja Gaiden, Low-G: The Low Gravity Man, and of course, Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects. Finally, we introduce two new segments on this show. First, we have what will clearly be a long-running feature: Sean Reads the Entirity of the Toxic Zombies Wikipedia Page, a real rollercoaster of emotions segment. Finally, after months of threats, Brad finally unleashes his wretched creation on the world: The Board of Many Things, a fifty category monstrosity used to select the topic of the next show. What did Sean win from the one armed bandit this week? This isn't a mixed metaphor, stop saying its a mixed metaphor. Whatever, you'll have to listen to find out. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

I love the smell of napalm in the morning! Journey up the Nùng River with Jonny and Darin as they take a psychedelic look back at Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 epic APOCALYPSE NOW, starring Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, and Marlon Brando. But is this the Vietnam War movie to end all Vietnam War movies, 45 years after the fact? Or is the controversy about its making more interesting than the movie itself? Also, is Brando really the iconic actor everyone claims he is?

NAVAL WEEK kicks off with what might be The LAST Great Cold War Thriller?? Could be as this adaptation of Tom Clancy's best-selling novel was released literally just a few months after the fall of the Soviet Union. It all takes place during the height of the Cold War back in the early 1980's. There's a brand new Russian submarine in the water which can be apparently run silent and it's lead by Captain Ramius played by Sean Connery....who COULD pass for Russian right? :o Regardless, rumors start to fly among both the Russian and American Navies that he might have gone rogue....resulting a cat-and-mouse out there on the Atlantic Ocean between both naval fleets to find his ship (called The Red October) so that they can find out the truth before it's too late! And inadvertently leading this chase is Jack Ryan, CIA analysis played by Alec Baldwin - he has suspicions that Ramius might NOT be going rogue and what results is a pulse-pounding suspense thriller directed by action-master John McTiernan as his follow-up to Die Hard two years prior. The all-star cast also includes James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Courtney B. Vance, and Stellan Skaarsgard among several others.....THE HUNT IS ON!!!See below for a link to a video citing the actual translated lyrics to the catchy "Hymm to Red October" theme....just in case you were always curious. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRG1UixHvosHost & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Jedidiah Ayres and John Walker join Mike to look at Michael Mann's moody supernatural film The Keep. Released in 1983, the film is a real who's who of actors including Jürgen Prochnow as a German captain, Gabriel Byrne as a Nazi SS Major, Ian McKellan as a disabled scholar, and Scott Glenn as an ancient being on the side of light. All of them eventually make their way to the titular Keep deep in the Romanian Carpathians. Also joining us are Professor Ivo Ritzer who discusses his essay about The Keep and Manhunter in The Philosophy of Michael Mann, producer Hawk Koch, and the author of The Keep, F.
