This week I'm very excited to share with you some recent developments in the story of the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke. I'm joined by Scott Dawson, who runs the Lost Colony Museum in the town of Buxton, on Hatteras Island. For a long time, Scott has been working with British archaeologist Dr. Mark Horton to excavate sites of old Native American villages in Buxton, left by a group known as the Croatoan. What they have discovered recently may just be the first real “smoking gun” evidence to prove what really happened to the colonists. And, no spoilers, but it's pretty much exactly what we should have already realized happened.Support the Croatoan Archaeological Society here!  - cashatteras.comEarlier Roanoke Colony Episodes - Episode 27 (part 1) and episode 28 (part 2)Support the show! Join the Patreon (patreon.com/historyfixpodcast)Buy some merchBuy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaineSources: "The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand" by Michael Leroy ObergIsland Free Press "‘Smoking gun' evidence of Lost Colony's relocation to Hatteras Island makes international news"Shoot me a message!

Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner break down MLB Friday from a betting perspective. best bets as always. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner hosted the MLB podcast focusing on Friday's games. They began by reflecting on their recent 2-0 best bets streak, expressing confidence heading into the weekend. The first highlighted game was the Chicago rivalry at Wrigley Field, where Shane Smith starts for the struggling White Sox against Cade Horton of the Cubs. Griffin noted Horton's limited pitch mix might still overpower the weak Sox lineup. Munaf emphasized the Cubs' rest advantage and the Sox's fatigue after a loss in Cincinnati. Next, the Guardians face the Reds in the "Battle of Ohio." Griffin was cautious about Tanner Bybee as a road favorite, pointing out the hitter-friendly park and Brady Singer's vulnerability to home runs. Munaf countered, citing Bybee's strong recent performances, including seven innings against the Phillies, making him lean toward the Guardians' money line. In Philadelphia, Andrew Haney's inconsistency was likened to an unpredictable night out, while Ranger Suarez's solid home record made the Phillies a favored pick, especially on the run line, with Munaf highlighting Haney's poor career numbers against the Phillies. For the Mets vs Yankees, Griffin leaned toward the Mets due to their bullpen strength and skepticism of the Yankees' offense, while Munaf preferred betting the over, expecting home runs from both sides at Yankee Stadium. Griffin selected the Orioles over the Nationals as his best bet, trusting Baltimore's bullpen despite their shaky start to the season. Munaf agreed, noting Cade Povich's prior success against the Nationals. In Toronto, Griffin doubted the Tigers' offense despite their strong start, while Munaf leaned under 8.5, noting Flaherty's rough patch and Francis's vulnerability. In the Braves vs Red Sox matchup, Griffin was hesitant to back Chris Sale and wary of the Braves' underperformance. Munaf praised Crochet's early season form and leaned towards under eight, expecting a pitching duel. Regarding the Astros vs Rangers, both analysts favored the Rangers due to Ivaldi's dominance and McCullers Jr.'s limited pitch count. Munaf stressed the under, given the Astros' offensive struggles and Rangers' home under trends. In Milwaukee, Griffin was cautious about backing the Brewers despite Chad Patrick's solid form, while Munaf pointed out the absence of Buxton and Correa for the Twins, making the under eight a strong play. For the late games, they mocked the Rockies' dire situation in Arizona, where Corbin Burns' Diamondbacks were massive favorites. Munaf joked about backing the D-Backs team total overs. In San Diego, Munaf leaned over eight and a half in the Mariners vs Padres game, noting Koenig's regression potential after his shutout of the Rockies. Griffin, however, was hesitant. The Dodgers vs Angels featured Dustin May against Jack Kahanowitz. Both hosts dismissed the Angels' chances, advising bettors to focus on Dodgers team totals. In the Giants vs A's game, Griffin acknowledged JP Sears' surprising stability but warned about his fly-ball tendencies in San Francisco's pitcher-friendly park. Munaf favored Logan Webb's strong home splits and suggested a Giants win by multiple runs. Finally, the best bets were set: Griffin chose Orioles ML at -108, citing bullpen strength and home field, while Munaf selected Phillies -1.5 at -108, pointing to Suarez's home form and Haney's frailties. Throughout the podcast, both hosts balanced data and playful commentary, giving special attention to pitching matchups, team fatigue, and offensive inconsistencies, emphasizing the significance of situational factors like park dimensions and team travel schedules. Discover why finishing last might be the greatest victory in ultrarunning. The Golden Hour—that final stretch before race cutoff—represents a magical convergence of determination, community support, and raw emotion that captures the true essence of our sport. What does it really mean to be a DFL (Dead Freaking Last) finisher? Far from failure, crossing the line in the final moments before cutoff demonstrates extraordinary resilience and heart. While front-runners showcase incredible athletic talent, back-of-pack runners reveal something equally powerful: the unwavering commitment to continue when every reason exists to quit.My own experience finishing a Peak District 100-miler with just 14 minutes to spare stands as one of my most treasured ultrarunning memories. Running through the town of Buxton after 33+ hours on trail created a profound contrast—ordinary citizens going about their day had no idea of the extraordinary journey I was completing as the last - and only - person still on the course. That sensation of quiet accomplishment embodies why many of us are drawn to this sport. The finish line during Golden Hour often witnesses the most emotional scenes in ultrarunning. Crowds gather, volunteers cheer, and fellow runners return to welcome the final finishers. Watch the last hour of Western States or any major ultra, and you'll witness the hairs-standing-up-on-your-neck magic as runners cross with seconds remaining on the clock. For back-of-pack runners, embrace your journey. Chat with volunteers, appreciate the scenery, and when you approach that finish line—no matter how exhausted—find that last burst of energy for a strong finish. Your DFL achievement may inspire someone else to believe they can accomplish something extraordinary too. What's your Golden Hour story? Share it with our community and help celebrate those who embody what ultrarunning is truly about: perseverance, heart, and crossing that finish line on your own terms. But they did salvage at least a win, in Game 3, showing that even a fourth-place team still wins once in a while. With David taking a Buxton-like scheduled off-day, Hoges fills in to talk about the team with Dan, and both have lots to say about manager Rocco Baldelli. They question his handling of basically the entire roster, from decisions on pinch-hitting and pinch-running to how long to let starters and relievers stay in the game. In the end, though, they are the least impressed with how little impact it seems (so far) the changes he instituted in spring training have made to a team that resembles the one that ended last season far more than the team that cruised into first place last summer. Query & Company Rundown 03/20/25 (00:00-23:25) – Query & Company opens on a Thursday with Jake Query and producer Eddie Garrison welcoming everyone to the best time of the year, March Madness! They start the program by discussing another shaky Indiana Pacers win last night over the Dallas Mavericks. Additionally, they weigh in on some of the chatter following Darian DeVries press conference about the timeline of IU reaching out to him about the job. (23:25-31:49) – The NTT IndyCar Series returns to action this weekend in California. Jake and Eddie are trying to connect with Will Buxton to preview it, but they’re having technical difficulties. In the meantime, Jake previews the race at Thermal Club and provides a brief recap of the first race of the season. (31:49-47:30) – Will Buxton, the new voice of the NTT IndyCar Series on FOX Sports, joins Jake Query to conclude hour number one to discuss what the scene is like right now in California ahead of this weekend’s race at Thermal Club. Will also comments on the change from F1 to IndyCar, some of his takeaways from the first race of the season in St. Pete two weeks ago and then answers some fun questions from Jake to conclude the conversation. (47:30-1:04:36) – Hour two with Jake Query and Eddie Garrison starts with them sharing some of their favorite NCAA Tournament moments in their lifetime. It leads to a conversation as to what moments would make it into a Final Four if you had a field of sixty-eight moments in NCAA Tournament history. (1:04:36-1:18:07) – Jake and Eddie spitball some colleges that they only know because of teams pulling off improbably runs or having signature moments in the NCAA Tournament. Also, they dive into the Indiana Pacers game tonight against the Brooklyn Nets following another rollercoaster win last night. (1:18:07-1:25:22) – Hour number two concludes with Jake and Eddie dissecting whether IU and Darian DeVries had a mutual agreement about the IU job early in the season or not. (1:25:22-1:45:51) – Tony East from Locked On Pacers and Forbes Sports joins Query & Company to recap last night’s win over the Dallas Mavericks. Additionally, they discuss T.J. McConnell and Tony Bradley making big threes in the second half for the Pacers during their comeback and wonder what the rotation will look like tonight for Indiana on the second night of a back-to-back. (1:45:51-1:58:51) – Taylor Tannebaum from the ACC Network joins Jake Query as today’s final guest to explain what has changed with North Carolina the last month, provide an update on Cooper Flagg ahead of Duke’s first round game tomorrow, states that there is zero chance that Flagg will return to Duke next season, and then identifies Clemson as the best college campus in the ACC that she has been to. (1:58:51-2:07:50) – Today’s show closes with Jake giving away two pairs of tickets for two listeners to go see Counting Crows! Plus, JMV joins the guys in studio to preview his show!Support the show: https://1075thefan.com/query-and-company/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The guys discuss the potential of Matt Wallner batting lead off for the Twins, and Wallner's issues last season stemming from putting on too much muscle in the offseason. David wants to know who is going to play 2nd base for this team, and he begs Hoges to tell him there's a possibility that Buxton, Correa, and Lewis will all play in a good amount of games together this year. Welcome back to Delta Waterfowl's “The Voice of the Duck Hunter” podcast with host Joel Brice.Today, we have an exciting episode lined up because my guests are two men I've collaborated with for years on one of Delta's most well-known, popular, and effective initiatives: enhancing duck production on breeding habitat through targeted predator management and Hen House programs. Mike Buxton, a waterfowl biologist with extensive expertise in the effects of predators on nesting ducks, focuses on making predator management more efficient, effective, and widely implemented. And then there's Matt Chouinard, our expert in optimizing and expanding Delta's thousands of strategically placed, elevated cylindrical nesting structures known as Hen Houses. You won't want to miss his insights on why Hen Houses provide hen mallards the best chance of success, how Delta continually works to maximize ducks produced per dollar invested, and essential considerations if you're thinking about building and installing your own Hen House.Together, Mike and Matt form the backbone of our efforts to get a huge number of ducks into the fall flight. In our conversation, we discuss why Delta's work is increasingly vital, how Hen Houses, predator management, and habitat conservation support one another, and what the future of large-scale duck production looks like as Delta ramps up its Million Duck Campaign. Guests:Mike BuxtonWaterfowl Programs DirectorInnovator—continues pushing PM's efficiency and effectiveness to new heights.Matt ChouinardWaterfowl Programs DirectorKnown as Delta's Hen House guruKyle WintersteenDelta Waterfowl Magazine Editor Delta Waterfowl: https://deltawaterfowl.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeltaFans/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deltawaterfowl/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DeltaWaterfowl/

Louisiana “Only Fans” Mom Only Gets 8 Years For Letting Her 2 Year Old Die Meth Overdose

Alright, let's really break this one down because it's a case that'll make your blood boil. A Louisiana mother, 24-year-old Summer Buxton, just got sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the overdose death of her 2-year-old son, Keynan Jay Buxton. And while eight years might sound like a decent chunk of time, her family is not having it. They were expecting something much harsher—like 20 years—and they're making it very clear that they think justice was barely served. So, what exactly happened? Back on May 30, 2023, authorities found little Keynan unresponsive in a motel room. Now, kids get into things all the time, but when the toxicology report came back, it painted a truly horrifying picture. This toddler had meth, fentanyl, and acetyl fentanyl in his system. That's not just an accidental exposure—that's a fatal amount of drugs for a fully grown adult, let alone a baby who probably still needed help getting his shoes on the right feet. During the sentencing, Buxton's sister, who goes by Lyons, didn't hold back. She gave an emotional and furious victim impact statement, calling for the maximum penalty. In her eyes, Summer showed zero remorse—not a shred of guilt, not a moment of reflection. Instead, according to Lyons, Summer was more focused on keeping her OnlyFans account running than mourning the loss of her son. And just when you think it couldn't get any more absurd, Lyons also claimed that Summer was bragging about her “sugar daddy” footing the bill for her legal defense. Imagine being in that situation—your child is gone, your family is shattered, and instead of taking accountability, you're flexing about who's paying your lawyer fees. Buxton's mother, Tammie Abshire, echoed the outrage. She said the family fully expected a 20-year sentence, not a measly eight. And then Lyons dropped a brutal comparison: “How do you give someone eight years for the death of her child… but you can get ten years for animal abuse?” And honestly, she's got a point. In some states, if you so much as harm a police dog, you're looking at more time behind bars than Summer got for what happened to her son. Let that sink in. Now, Buxton's defense team tried their best to spin the narrative. Their argument? This was all a tragic accident, and Summer was suffering from a severe drug addiction that completely clouded her judgment. They claimed she wasn't in her right mind, that manslaughter was too harsh, and that the charge should've been negligent homicide instead. But the DA wasn't buying it. They refused to lower the charge, but in the end, they still cut a deal that her attorneys called “fair and reasonable.” Meanwhile, let's not forget about Keynan's father, Adrian Higgins. He was arrested too and ended up with a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter. So, if you're keeping score—Mom got eight years, Dad got ten. And yet, the child is still gone, and the family is left wondering if justice was really served. And just when you think the story is over, there's more. Buxton was actually arrested again in January 2024 at a motel in Mississippi (because apparently, motels are a recurring theme in her life). And if that wasn't enough, another woman connected to this case was arrested too—her court date is coming up on March 3. Who she is and what exactly her role was is still unclear, but it seems like this tangled mess of a case isn't done unraveling just yet. So, what do we take away from this? At the heart of it, this is an absolute tragedy. A 2-year-old lost his life in a situation that never should have happened. A child that young doesn't just stumble upon fentanyl and meth on his own—he had to be in an environment where that was accessible. And that's what makes this so enraging. Some people will argue that eight years is enough—after all, Summer was an addict, and addiction is a disease. But then you have the other side, the people who see this as a complete failure of justice. They see a mother who should have been protecting her child but instead put him in an environment where he didn't stand a chance. And now, she'll serve a sentence that, realistically, could be cut even shorter with good behavior. At the end of the day, no amount of prison time is bringing Keynan back. But the question that lingers is: Did the punishment fit the crime? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
