Final legal arguments in the Jeffrey Donaldson trial began today. The prosecution has said both women buried memories of being abused and developed coping mechanisms to allow them to get on with their lives, during her closing speech to the jury. While the defence told the jury, the case comes down to the word of both complainants against the word of his client, due to a lack of evidence against him. The 63-year-old former DUP leader has denied 18 charges of historic sexual abuse against two alleged victims. His wife Eleanor has pleaded NOT guilty to five charges of aiding and abetting and faces a trial of facts. Newstalk reporter Jamie O Hara was at Newry Crown Court today and joined Ciara and Shane.

A prosecution barrister has told a jury that the two complainants in the case against Jeffrey Donaldson had ‘No reason to lie'. But Jeffrey Donaldson's barrister has told the jury to look at evidence ‘dispassionately', and that “When all is said and done, it is their word against his word”. Rosemary Walsh KC, for the prosecution, told the jury in Newry Crown Court that Jeffrey Donaldson's wife Eleanor “was aware her husband had a sexual interest in pre-pubescent girls”. The former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson is accused of rape and several counts of gross indecency and of indecent assault. The 63 year old has pleaded not guilty to the 18 alleged offences. He did admit infidelity; that he had had an affair with a woman in London nearly 20 years ago. Nowadays they say to me; “You used to know my Granny.”That would have been over fifty years ago when Grannies and Granda's were young and well before the Grandparent stage.  That's when  I first met the late Mrs Donnelly, the Granny of our Ard Mheara Róis-Máire. It was in 1969/70. She was living in Westrock Drive off the Whiterock Road and then in Springhill Drive. Mrs Donnelly was a lovely woman. She was originally from McDonnell St. in the Falls area and lived for a time in Ballymacarrett in East Belfast before returning to the west of the city.As a young girl May had been one of hundreds of women who prayed outside Crumlin Road prison during the night and into the morning Tom Williams was hanged in September 1942. In the decades that followed, especially during the conflict following the pogroms of 1969, May was one of those Indomitable women in the greater Ballymurphy area who stood against the brutality, harassment and raids of the British Army. May was a kind; compassionate woman whose door was always open to republicans.

The trial of Jeffrey Donaldson began on Wednesday with the jury warned they would hear about “difficult and traumatic incidents” the two alleged victims claim they experienced as children.By the end of the second day, Thursday, they had heard more of the substance of those alleged incidents, including watching a video of a police interview with the witness known as Complainant A.She and the other witness, Complainant B, allege sexual abuse by Donaldson when they were children.The jury heard how Donaldson wrote to Complainant A, saying he regretted “all the hurt, pain and distress” he had caused.
