Episode 098 brings a double dose of low end theory, welcoming a pioneering pair of underground bass legends percolating on opposite coasts, both cats deep in the streets and boasting decades in the game, with the catalogues and collaborators to prove it. 0:00 - ep.098 preview 3:30 - High Sierra Music Festival 2026  6:30 - The Upful Update 12:00 - intro: Club d'Elf's MIKE RIVARD [aka Micro] 15:00 - INTERVIEW w/ MICRO [83m] 1:38:00 - introducing LONNIE MARSHALL 1:42:00 - INTERVIEW w/ LONNIE [43m] 2:24:30 - afterglow x ViBE Junkie Jamz   First up Mike Rivard [aka Micro] - bass/sintir/founder/visionary of Boston's jazz-trance-dub-hop institution known as Club d'Elf. Twas an honor and privilege to finally tap in with Micro after a quarter century of fandom and awe. We chop it up at length about his group's unicorn career, magnificent co-conspirators like the late Mark Sandman, John Medeski, Brahim Fribgane (RIP), Joe and Mat Maneri, Dave Tronzo, and (Friends Of The Pod) Mister Rourke, Adam Deitch, Ryan Zoidis, Jonny G, among several others. We learn about Moroccan sintir; the healing powers of Gnawa trance music; plant medicines and Terrence McKenna; Micro's personal trials and tribulations along the way; his perspective on the integral role of independent music venues; interpolating NOLA Second Line rhythms in tandem with Morrocan traditions; and revisiting his embryonic journeys with the Grateful Dead as a wide-eared, curious youngster. In April 2026, Club d'Elf unveiled their latest full-length LP Loon & Thrush, a positively magnificent affair in a deep, eclectic d'Elf canon brimming with brilliant configurations and bold adventuring. We chase that inspired dialog with another informative chat featuring LA-based bassist/badass Lonnie Marshall from pioneering underground funk/hip-hop squadron Weapon of Choice. Lonnie was kind enough to hop on the line and discuss his life of Nutmeg Music, his bombastic and eclectic history and colorful persona, lineage from the P-Funk family tree and his teenage era rolling with Bootsy Collins' Boot Camp, storytelling and dope collabs, daKAH hip-hop orchestra, recording/gigging with Joe Strummer's debut solo LP/group, reflections on his brother Arik Marshall's brief, chaotic moment with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and long-term run backing Macy Gray. Plus a whole lot more in this educational inspirational get down with the most mega-nutt mug to ever bless these podwaves! Bassist/sintir sorcerer Mike Rivard [aka MicroVard] defies any sort of rigid genre-specifics or generic categorization. The cat finds himself at home in a bewildering array of musical/cultural settings: from the good ol' Grateful Dead to the melancholic-rock of his late friend Mark Sandman and Morphine, to the mountains of Morocco with local Berber musicians, plus side trips into the Broadway pits, and tantric trance sessions with John Medeski and Joe Maneri. A "military brat" coming of adolescence in the wide expanses of Minnesota, he took in the local sounds of Prince, Husker Du, and the free-jazz coming out of the University of Minnesota milieu. Eventually a young Rivard would find himself while hitchiking on Dead tour, further opening up  nascent doors of perception. Later, Micro set about embarking on Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1981. After graduating, he studied with jazz legend Dave Holland. Inspired by North African gnawa music, he picked up a Moroccan sintir (three-stringed bass lute) and with guidance from Hassan Hakmoun and Maalem Mahmoud Gania, he has become one of a handful of Western musicians proficient on the instrument. He puts all of the shared sacred teachings and wisdom to good use in Club d'Elf, the jazz-world-dub-electronica squad he formed in 1998. Club d'Elf can be heard across more than 15 albums over the past 25 years; an eclectic, pioneering collective with a vast array of co-conspirators from around the world. Club d'Elf website  Instagram new album Loon & Thrush After years grinding it out on the LA scene with his brother Arik in Marshall Law, Lonnie Marshall founded Weapon of Choice in 1992, holding down bass and lead vocals. After a video directed by Geoff Moore for their song "Uppity, Yuppity Doolittle" came to the attention of Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, the band was signed to Gossard‘s record label Loosegroove. They released three albums with Loosegroove before the company folded in 2000: "Nut-meg says Bozo the Town" (1994), Highperspice (1996), and Nutmeg Phantasy (1998). In 2001, the band dropped Illoominutty on Fishbone's Nuttsactor 5 record label, and in 2003, they released Color Me Funky. Since 1997, Lonnie has performed alongside members of P Funk and Fishbone, among others, as part of Trulio Disgracias - a constantly mutating funk-rock-jazz collective headed by by Norwood Fisher. Lonnie was an emcee, composer, and performer for daKAH, a 65 piece hip-hop orchestra which coalesced periodically in the Los Angeles area for many years. Before that, Marshall wrote, recorded and toured with the legendary Joe Strummer of The Clash, behind Strummer's dynamic 1989 solo debut Earthquake Weather. Lonnie has contributed/collaborated with Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Tone Loc, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Perry Farrell, Les Claypool, Stone Gossard and his brother Arik Marshall. The name Stevie Wright probably doesn't ring a bell. It should. Wright was the lead singer of The Easybeats, Australia's first international rock act and the band that gave the world "Friday on My Mind" in 1965. Then he made Hard Road.Released in 1974 and produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, the duo who would immediately go on to produce AC/DC's first six albums. Hard Road features Malcolm Young on guitar and a teenage Angus Young as the live touring band. The title track is, as patron Gavin Reid puts it, "Highway to Hell was a slower Hard Road." The blueprint was right here. And then there's "Evie," a 10-minute, three-part rock opera that hit #1 in Australia in 1974, one full year before "Bohemian Rhapsody." Gavin also argues it may have been the template for the Queen epic. Contested, but compelling.Jay and Chip walked into this episode having never heard of Stevie Wright. D'ailleurs il chante un moment : « Do what I wanna do, 'cause it's my prerogative... ». D'autres singles sortiront avec un succès plus mitigé : « That's the Way Love Is », « Something in Common » « Two Can Play That Game ».Jams Of The Year 1993Ecoutez l'épisode dans son intégralité et découvrez les 11 autres artistes que nous abordonsIci : https://smartlink.ausha.co/jams-of-the-year/24-les-jams-de-l-annee-1993Aidez nous, en soutenant gratuitement ce podcast !Comment ? Michael Hampton — the young phenom who walked into the Parliament‑Funkadelic galaxy at just seventeen and instantly became part of its gravitational pull. A Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, a torchbearer of the Mothership, and the man behind some of the most transcendent guitar moments in funk history. From the cosmic chaos of the P‑Funk stage to the spiritual electricity of his ‘Maggot Brain' performances, Hampton has always played like he's channeling something bigger — something ancient, futuristic, and deeply human all at once.Today, we dive into the journey of a quiet giant whose guitar has spoken louder than words for nearly five decades. There have been few creative bursts of the modern era more epic than George Clinton's in the 70s. He had so many songs in his brain he had to keep creating bands or producing artists to get them all out. One of his key players during this furtive time was guitarist Michael Hampton. "The Kidd" joined George's team while still a teenager when Eddie Hazel started to do his own thing. From there, George used him in Parliament, Funkadelic, the Brides of Funkenstein, Parlay, and with artists like Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and Fred Wesley. Michael still plays with the P-Funk All-Stars to this day and has recently released a free EP called Into the Public Domain that shows he hasn't lost anything in terms of guitar playing. It was a heady time and Michael and I try to wrap our brains around it all, but it was a challenge. However, there's no mistaking that some of the greatest funk music ever made has Michael's stamp on it and we're grateful he's here this week to discuss it with us. Enjoy!  www.michaelwhampton.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

What if paint could hold fear, wonder, and the cosmos all at once? That question runs through this conversation with guest host Jamele Wright Sr., where we explore Jack Whitten's radical break from gesture and the relentless search to make painting enough on its own terms. From turning acrylic into “glass” to trapping forms on a truly flat plane, we trace how Whitten rebuilt painting through mechanics, experiment, and time in the studio. We get candid about gimmicks—when devices clarify and when they distract—and why one stunning passage can sabotage an entire canvas. A spontaneous pilgrimage to see a 10-by-10 Clifford Still became a turning point: white walls, no tricks, just a square that redefined what the work needed. That experience sets up a bigger argument for seeing art in person, where edges, drape, and surface detail can't hide behind the glow of a screen. Along the way, we connect Rothko's vertical bars, Twombly's relentless repetitions, and the sheer grind that makes a monumental gesture land with authority.Whitten's language of the spiritual, magical, and cosmic opens the door to the era's space-age curiosity and Black futurist soundtracks—Sun Ra, Funkadelic, and Earth, Wind & Fire—and to the ambition of putting “the fear of God” in paintings. We talk practice as training: ten-painting cycles, breaking boredom at eight, honest tests of scale, and letting assistants' “mistakes” become creative constraints. Color mixing from scratch, documenting stages, and cooling down after a studio crescendo all feed a process that values interiority and invites slow looking.Abstraction here isn't an absence; it's the artist's inner weather made visible. One hundred people can read the same canvas a hundred different ways, and that plurality is the point. If you're hungry to make work that holds up off-screen and in real space, this one will nudge you back to the studio and into the museum with fresh eyes. If it resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who loves painting, and leave a review to tell us what artwork last made you stop and stay.Follow Jamele at https://www.instagram.com/artthenewreligion/Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg Watch the Video Episode on Youtube or Spotify, https://www.youtube.com/@JustMakeArtPodcast

After receiving his first guitar at age 10, a determined Michael became self-taught with the help of his bedroom radio, spending days on end playing along with Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and B.B. King records. After studying jazz guitar in high school, an impromptu backstage audition for George Clinton in 1974 earned 17-year-old Michael a seat on the Parliament mothership alongside the immortal Eddie Hazel, under the name “Kidd Funkadelic”. Hampton has spent the past half-century playing nearly 400 shows with the band, in 25 countries across 6 continents. Highlights include multiple appearances at world-renowned festivals like Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Reading, Woodstock '99, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, and Isle of Wight, and venues like the Apollo Theater, The Fillmore, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Troubadour, Red Rocks, The Beacon, and Sydney Opera House. Among Hampton's Funkadelic writing credits are group staples like “Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!” and “Funk Gets Stronger”, both released during the group's late- '70s/early-'80s hit run. His lead guitar is also embedded in the DNA of 90s hip-hop's G- Funk movement—Dr. Dre's “Let Me Ride” samples Parliament's “Mothership Connection”, Ice Cube's “Bop Gun” borrows elements of Funkadelic's “One Nation Under a Groove”, while De La Soul's “Me Myself and I”, Digital Underground's “Kiss You Back”, and Snoop Dogg's “What's My Name?” all draw from Funkadelic's “(Not Just) Knee Deep”. Michael's colleagues include George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Maceo Parker, Charlie Wilson, Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, Fred Wesley & The JB's, Chuck Treece, Dean Ween, Primal Scream, Digital Underground, Too $hort, and Deee-Lite. Michael's contributions to the Parliament Funkadelic catalog have also influenced famed artists like Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Outkast, D'Angelo and Janelle Monáe, among many others. As of 2025, Michael has appeared on over 30 separate major label releases. Though best known for his role in the funk guitar pantheon, Hampton is also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, with drums, keys, and synth programming credits across the Parliament discography. On this episode, Marc talks with Seth Neblett, author of "Mothership Connected: The Women of Parliament-Funkadelic," published in September of 2025. It's a fascinating oral history of the female members of Parliament and Funkadelic, particularly those in the P-Funk sister groups Parlet and the Brides of Funkenstein: Mallia Franklin, Lynn Mabry, Dawn Silva, Debbie Wright, and Shirley Hayden. Seth is the son of Mallia Franklin, who, along with being an important musician in the P-Funk story, was responsible for the inclusion of many members of the collective; most famously, she introduced Bootsy Collins to George Clinton and convinced him to include Bootsy in P-Funk. As Seth writes, "The Brides of Funkenstein and Parlet, were, along with Bootsy Collins, the most successful groups to come out of the P-Funk Empire. The women sang and contributed to all the organization's in-house projects...In an era of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, detouring through disco, and cresting on punk and new wave of the eighties, this critical "female" piece of the music history puzzle is as important as any other."You can buy "Mothership Connected" here.We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Seth Neblett!

Number one Funkateer Bootsy Collins takes us to Funk University! From his days in James Brown's group, to his work with Parliament/Funkadelic and Booty's Rubber Band, to his recent single that raises awareness about domestic violence, "the world's only rhinestone rock-star doll" tears the roof off the sucker and breaks it all down for us. Songcraft wants the funk!  PART ONE:Paul and Scott discuss particularly recognizable bassists and chat about their expectations of what they thought Bootsy would be like before he landed the mother ship on Songcraft. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with the legendary Bootsy CollinsABOUT BOOTSY COLLINS:Named among the top 5 bassists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Bootsy Collins is one of funk and R&B's most iconic musicians, singers, frontmen, producers, and characters. He started out playing sessions for King Records in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, then kickstarted his career with James Brown's backup band, The J.B.'s. He was credited as a songwriter on classic J.B.'s songs such as “The Grunt” and “These Are the J.B.'s.” In 1972, he joined George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic, and is a co-writer of classics such as “Up for the Down Stroke,” “Chocolate City,” “P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up),” “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker),” “Mothership Connection,” “Dr. Funkenstein,” and “Flash Light.” In 1976, Bootsy's Rubber Band captivated audiences with his flashy star-shaped glasses and bass, and hits such as “I'd Rather Be With You” and the chart-topping “Bootzilla.” Since then, Bootsy has launched Bootzilla Productions and Funk University to help mentor younger creatives to reach their full potential. His inescapable influence on pop culture can be heard in the music of Snoop Dogg, Outkast, Dr. Dre, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rick James, Prince, Daft Punk, Primus, Thundercat, and in Childish Gambino's Grammy-winning platinum hit “Redbone,” which paid homage to “I'd Rather Be With You.” Bootsy is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. His latest album is called Album of the Year #1 Funkateer.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Q&A: With ‘Chunkadelic,' Nur-D doubles down on joy and resistance

Minnesota Now

Since first hitting the scene in 2018 with his pop culture-soaked musicality, Nur-D has stayed busy. His latest album, “Chunkadelic,” is his tenth full-length project in seven years. Ahead of its release, he stopped by Minnesota Public Radio to perform a few tracks and talk with MPR News arts reporter Jacob Aloi. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Tell me a little about ‘Chunkadelic.'The whole project spins around this record, which was birthed out of a very mean comment on Reddit. A while back ago, we finally had a video go semi-viral on Reddit — me and the rest of the friendly neighborhood SpiderBand. We're all in tie dye. We're all having a good time, loving ourselves, enjoying the music we're making. You know, the internet can't have any of that. So this dude, somebody on the internet, typed in the comment section, “This looks like Chunkadelic.”I was like, honestly, this is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen.  It was supposed to be mean, but this is right. This is exactly who I am. But we sat on it for years. And then as we were getting together, making this record, I said to myself, “Chunkadelic”, and DJ Hayes was like, “Should we use that name now?” And it kind of just exploded to what it is now.DJ Hayes is your collaborator. He's on half of the record as producer. “Chunkadelic” is homegrown, like we cooked that from the kitchen in our house, like we made it up.You've described it as one of your most personal projects. What are you exploring in this album? It is a lot about finding joy in the face of adversity. Like, radical creativity under societal pressure to conform. One of the things that people ask me all the time is, “Oh, hey, like, why haven't you popped off?”And it's like there is an entire complex, a ton of people who get paid to make sure that only certain types of people get into the positions of musical acceptance. People get to go to the show once they pay their dues and shave off the weird parts of themselves that make them unmarketable. And so for me, this record was kind of just my rejection of that as a concept. The industry works great for some people, and that's awesome. What I found is like, the more I just hang out with the people that rock with me, the people who just want their music a little bit different, who are cool with me saying the things that I believe in out loud and unapologetically — they're gonna rock with me. So this record is kind of, like, I don't know — a butterfly moment out of a cocoon. Like, how far do I go into the industry? How far do I just lean into just making art, for art's sake? And the butterfly that came out of it was “Chunkadelic.” It was just like, “I'm gonna do me. I'm gonna be weird. I've decided that that's what I'm gonna do, if that is no longer in vogue, cool.” It makes me think about the Billy Joel song, “The Entertainer.” There's a line in it that says: “If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit. So they cut it down to 3:05.” You have a similar line in one of your other songs.“Two Minutes and 30 Seconds,” I remember I had a professor when I was in music business school. I was going for a music business major, and he told me “two minutes and 30 seconds” — after that, you're losing them. And there is this industry standard of clickbaity, repeatable, “let's get you on a TikTok sound,” and that's all you need. If you can just get a chorus, you're good, you know? And while I like that in certain accesses, because it allows for people to come up with cool, catchy stuff… I miss being rewarded for listening from track one all the way down to track 15, and you can feel the home-cooked meal-ness of a record. And so that's what I'm trying to do. What were some of the things that you were thinking about, or some artists you might have been listening to, when you were coming up with these tracks? I really wanted to take the time to not only listen to the funk genre, but also listen to the things that I enjoy… Anderson .Paak was one of the people I was listening to a lot. Because, while not specifically funk, his decision to be unique in his records was really, like, integral to me. Not only that, but George Clinton — obviously. “Funkadelic” is the main inspiration. “[Not Just] Knee Deep” was one of the first songs for me that I think really gripped me as a musician. And I didn't hear it on a record. I didn't hear it in concert — I heard it on “Good Burger.” Nur-D performs live in the Current Studio In the movie “Good Burger,” Kenan (Thompson) and Kel (Mitchell) end up in an insane asylum, and then in order to get out, there's a big dance number. And that dance number was to “Knee Deep, and George Clinton's in it; he's in the scene. And I just remember thinking to myself as a kid, this is so much fun, like music can be like this. I would rewind that little orange VHS tape over and over and over again, just to wear that scene out. And so that's like, in me, it's always been in me. It's been there since I was a little kid. And so I'm excited to be able to finally let that come out. I think one thing that maybe gets mistaken for your performance style is that it's just comedy, but really, you're having a good time. Being unapologetically happy about what you're doing is one of the biggest forms of resistance. I personally feel comedy — and laughter and joy — cuts through the fear that often is used to keep people in particular spaces. If you're laughing, if you're enjoying yourself, if you're poking fun, it requires a lot more work from the opposition to stop you. Because people want to laugh, people want to have a good time. And so what I try to bring to my thing, this “Nur-D” thing is, like — I am entertainment. I'm not a distraction.I'm the fiddler in the trenches. I am just as much a part of the war and the fight for what we need to do, as you guys are, people who are listening. But my job is to keep you motivated, to keep you having fun, thinking that tomorrow is worth it, and therefore, we will fight. It's comedy. It's fun. I make jokes. I'm gonna make a lot of them, but like, it's because… being sad is what they want. And I don't want to do that anymore. I want to just be happy. When you say that's what “they” want, what do you mean by that?I mean the powers that be… not to get too conspiracy theory about it, but there are people out there who have a vested interest in you buying what they're selling. And a lot of the time, they manufacture scarcity, they manufacture hurt so that you will buy the joy that they are selling: the temporary joy that they are selling. And for me, I'm like, no, let's bring some real joy, joy that comes from within, joy that can't be taken from you. And love for yourself, love for the things that make you happy. If you can operate in that, there is no force — business, political or otherwise — that can stop you. And then getting linked up with people that also agree with you? Now we're a super team. Now we can't be stopped. It's like Power Rangers up in here. Is there anything else you want to say about the record? I'd want to say, listen to it a thousand times a day, every day for the rest of your life, to help me pay rent! What I really want to say about the record is thank you to the Minnesota music community for kind of giving me proof of concept, sticking with me throughout all of these records, all of these projects.10 projects within the seven-year span that I've been out, to have them all be so well received, is so awesome. I'm very lucky. I understand how blessed I am in that capacity. So with this 10th record, it is really a thank you to the scene.

Today, the lads kick things off with a classic Jeremy Kyle moment: a man boldly declares he loves cocaine more than his kids. This prompts a discussion on addiction where Luke accuses Pete of being addicted to papier-mâché (he doesn't deny it) and Pete issues a public warning about glue powders – specifically the deeply cursed meat glue.Elsewhere, a casual confession about a recent outdoor wee sends them into a surprisingly passionate debate about the regional politics of public urination. And yes, Pete's still convinced he could build Luke's house extension.
