The Little Questions
Logo, legacy, or laundering - what is sponsorship?

The Beatles once sang that money can't buy you love. However, spent in the right way, and on the right thing, it would seem it can buy you the attention and potentially even adoration of thousands, nay millions, of people around the world.  How? Sponsorship. Once the process of getting your logo on a shirt, today it's all about stadiums, series, songs, influencers, even causes.  Sponsorship is now a critical, strategic marcomms channel — used for everything from encouraging engagement, to winning hearts, as well as burying some frankly dodgy reputational baggage. Allegedly. It is perhaps no surprise then that last year in the UK alone, £4.6bn was spent on sponsorship, up 10% on 2023, with this year looking like it will enjoy similar healthy growth. So what is sponsorship and how does it work?  Where are the opportunities, the traps and how can you tell the difference? What is the role for us corporate communicators, especially if and when things go south it's us that has to rush around with the dustpan and brush?  We'll look at examples that made headlines, ones that built empires, and a few that made us bury our heads in our branded tote bags. This time, Apella Advisors partners Andrew Brown and Matt Young chat through the challenges. benefits and failures of this ever growing part of the industry.  Andrew Brown; formerly Director of Communications and Public affairs at Ageas Insurance, Andrew has more than ten years' experience leading the corporate affairs functions for global, listed, multifaceted firms across a range of regulated and unregulated sectors. Rational thinking might drive economics, but emotional behavior drives decisions. And no one understands that better than Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational, a book that's reshaped our assumptions about how people make decisions. In this episode, we're unpacking key lessons from Dan Ariely's work with the help of our special guest, Leslie Alore, SVP of Marketing at Flexera.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from setting the right expectations, why fewer choices close more deals, and how the power of “free” and fear of loss can drive serious retention.About our guest, Leslie AloreAs the SVP of Marketing, Leslie Alore leads Flexera's marketing strategy with an aim to create great experiences and outcomes for our customers. Her passion for people and technology—combined with more than 15 years of marketing leadership in the tech space—has established her as a successful, results-driven executive who enables teams to do their best work.Prior to joining Flexera, Leslie served as the Global SVP of Lifecycle Marketing at Ivanti. Before that, she held various marketing, operations and GTM strategy roles at Iron Mountain. Leslie is an active speaker and mentor in the GTM community, and has been recognized among “Top Women in Marketing” by Ragan Communications and “Women of the Channel” by CRN.Leslie holds a BBA in Management, and an MBA with a concentration in Strategic Leadership from Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Predictably Irrational:Set expectations to shape reality. Great marketing doesn't just reflect value, it creates the conditions for it. Leslie highlights how expectations shape reality. When buyers believe something is good, they interpret every detail through that lens. This isn't about manipulation, it's about clarity and consistency. Leslie says, “The effect of expectations… believing beforehand something is good, therefore it will be or the reverse.” So stop hoping your audience connects the dots. Tell them what to expect, then deliver on it. Perception isn't a bonus, it's the foundation.Shrink your options to speed the decision. Too many options stall progress. The paradox of choice tells us more isn't better, it's paralyzing. Leslie urges marketers to curate the path forward: “You actually want to give people fewer options and take control of the options that they see.” Don't just join the shortlist, define it. When you narrow the frame, you speed up the decision for your customers. Turn “free” into staying power with loss aversion. There's magic in “free,” but the real power lies in what people fear losing. Once someone uses your product, whether it's a freemium tool or an ungated resource, they've invested. Now there's skin in the game. Leslie puts it simply, “People will overvalue something that's free and ignore kind of the trade-off costs associated. And loss is psychologically painful. We don't want to lose that, which we already have.” Whether you offer software, content, or services, create early wins. Then make the cost of leaving feel higher than the cost of staying.Quotes*“ There's many organizations that lean into that power of positivity…What's very interesting is that consumer brands do this a lot very, very well. B2B organizations tend to do almost the opposite. They tend to lean more into FUD. And that's a harder road to tread.”*“ If you're an organization that is selling software, the software is designed to provide a business outcome. It's designed to solve a business problem. Instead of focusing on, here's the business problem. Doesn't that suck for you? You can say, ‘here's the solution.*“You have the power, you can feel confident about your ability to achieve X, Y, Z because you've solved this problem.' It's saying the same thing, but orienting it in a positive way and being very, very, very consistent in that message. Beat that drum over and over and over again.”*“ Narrow down the competitive options for them. Your sales process will move faster. You will be able to take better control of the narrative if you say, ‘this is us and these are the two other vendors that look like us. And here's why we are different and better, and here's what you can expect from these guys.' And that doesn't mean saying negative things about them.  It's just highlighting your strengths and your virtues.”*“People are willing to accept trade-offs for something that is perceived to be free…This is the exact reason that PLG, product-led growth, is so powerful. Because if you can get people in the door with some sort of freemium offering, people will actually work harder to do the legwork to get a free product to work and interact with it, than they might be willing to put in for something that they have to go pay for. And then once they have it and they've put in the work, they don't wanna lose it.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Leslie Alore, SVP of Marketing at Flexera[00:56] Why Predictably Irrational?[02:20] The Role of SVP of Marketing at Flexera[02:47] Understanding Predictably Irrational[09:56] B2B Marketing Lessons from Predictably Irrational[37:49] Cognitive Dissonance in Buying Behavior[42:17] Emotional Marketing in B2B[46:18] Final Thoughts and TakeawaysLinksConnect with Leslie on LinkedInLearn more about FlexeraAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Tom Bodrovics once again engages in an interesting conversation with Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO and Chief Strategist for QI Research, former Fed Insider, and author of the book "Fed Up." The conversation focuses on the ongoing recession that likely began in Q1 2024. Danielle highlights key data points, such as job losses starting in Q2 2024, which confirm the recession's onset. Despite this clarity, official channels are reluctant to acknowledge the recession due to political considerations. Danielle emphasizes the severe impact of student loan forbearance and credit constraints on US households, noting that rising defaults will further strain consumer spending. This situation is compounded by a lack of clear policies to replace past stimulus measures, leaving the economy vulnerable. Danielle shifts into the commercial real estate sector, with banks facing growing pressure to recognize losses. She critiques the Federal Reserve for ignoring critical data, such as shelter inflation and job losses, in favor of focusing on tariffs' impact on goods prices. This stance, she argues, is politically motivated and disregards the Fed's own historical lessons. Investors are advised to prioritize safety over riskier assets, given the high returns on cash and the uncertain economic outlook. Danielle concludes by urging empathy and support for communities navigating these challenging times, emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another during economic hardship. Talk to any senior partner in a law firm, and you're likely to get a complaint or snide comment about the younger generation of lawyers being lazier, more entitled, and less interested in making partner or assuming leadership roles than their predecessors. On the flip side, some younger lawyers will be all too happy to tell you that senior lawyers are overly demanding, can't respect boundaries, won't share origination credit, and refuse to cede any responsibility or authority to those coming up behind them. Generational differences are real. They are significant. And they are impacting both how law firms operate today and how they will be governed in the future.  Chris DeSantis is a speaker, author, and consultant specializing in workplace interventions. With nearly 30 years of experience as an independent organizational behavior consultant, Chris is a trusted partner to some of the world's largest companies in the professional services, tech, and pharmaceutical industries. When working with clients, his goals are to dig deeper, treat the root causes, and offer user-friendly solutions aligned with company initiatives. Before becoming an independent consultant, Chris was the Director of Management Development and Training for the American Medical Association and a Human Resources Development Manager at Brunswick Corporation. Chris has a BBA from the University of Notre Dame, an MA in organizational behavior from Loyola University in Chicago, and an MBA from the University of Denver. Chris is the Author of Why I Find You Irritating: Navigating Generational Friction at Work. He's also the Host of the Cubicle Confidential podcast, where he and Co-host Mary Abbajay share advice on outrageous workplace questions, comments, and concerns. WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS EPISODE ON NAVIGATING GENERATIONAL FRICTION AT WORK Many law firm leaders are grappling with generational tensions that quietly undermine collaboration, leadership development, and retention. But these conflicts aren't simply about age, they're rooted in deeper divides over authority, feedback, and what lawyers expect from the workplace. Chris DeSantis, speaker, consultant, and author of Why I Find You Irritating: Navigating Generational Friction at Work, has spent his career helping organizations navigate workplace dynamics, and now helps law firm leaders understand how generational habits and mindsets can create hidden friction. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge, Chris joins Elise Holtzman to unpack how law firm hierarchies clash with younger lawyers' expectations of dialogue and inclusion. He shares why traditional “figure it out” leadership no longer works, and how shifting to a culture of open conversation can reduce friction, boost engagement, and strengthen leadership pipelines. 2:43 – Why law firm leaders can't ignore generational friction. Chris shares the challenges that inspired him to write his book. 4:55 – How generalizations shape perceptions and create blind spots in the workplace. 7:43 – The four generations in today's workforce and how their life experiences influence expectations at work. 11:02 – How different parenting models have shaped generational behaviors and workplace dynamics. 14:06 – Why younger attorneys struggle in tell-do workplaces, and how leaders can shift to an engage-discuss model. 19:02 – The hidden reasons adjacent generations experience the most friction, and how leaders can help defuse the tension. 26:01 – How gender, hierarchy, and generational differences collide in law firm environments. 33:10 – What leaders can do to foster dialogue over directives. Chris explains why this approach drives better performance and retention. In this episode… From a major privacy summit to a regional AI event, experts across sectors are emphasizing that regulatory scrutiny is intensifying while AI capabilities and risks are accelerating. State privacy regulators are coordinating enforcement efforts, actively monitoring how companies handle privacy rights requests and whether cookie consent platforms work as they should. At the same time, AI tools are advancing rapidly with limited regulatory oversight, raising serious ethical and societal concerns. What practical lessons can businesses take from IAPP's 2025 Global Privacy Summit and Atlanta's AI Week to strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and prepare for what's ahead? At the 2025 IAPP Global Privacy Summit, a major theme emerged: state privacy regulators are collaborating on enforcement more closely than ever before. When it comes to honoring privacy rights, this collaboration spans early inquiry stages through active enforcement, making it critical for businesses to establish, regularly test, and monitor their privacy rights processes. It also means that companies need to audit cookie consent platforms regularly, ensure compliance with universal opt-out signals like the Global Privacy Control, and align privacy notices with actual practices. Regulatory enforcement advisories and FAQs should be treated as essential readings to stay current on regulators' priorities. Likewise at the inaugural Atlanta AI Week, national security and ethical concerns came into sharper focus. Despite promises of localized data storage, some social media platforms and apps continue to raise alarms over foreign governments' potential access to personal data. While experts encourage experimentation and practical application of AI tools, they are also urging businesses to remain vigilant to threats such as deepfakes, AI-driven misinformation, and the broader societal implications of unchecked AI development. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi Daniels, Founder and CEO of Red Clover Advisors, and Justin Daniels, Shareholder and Corporate Attorney at Baker Donelson, share their top takeaways from the IAPP Global Privacy Summit 2025 and the inaugural Atlanta AI Week. Jodi highlights practical steps for improving privacy rights request handling, the importance of regularly testing cookie consent management platforms, and ensuring published privacy notices reflect actual practices. Justin discusses the ethical challenges surrounding AI's rapid growth, the national security risks tied to social media platforms, and the dangers posed by deepfake technology. Together, Jodi and Justin emphasize the importance of continuous education, collaboration, and proactive action to prepare businesses for the future of privacy and AI.

In this series, we're looking at some anxiety-producing topics through Julian of Norwich's lens of faith, hope, and love.Today, Julia interviews Ron Schmidt, whose passion for creation care (especially about achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions) is filled with conviction, curiosity, and hope. Listen in as one of our sages talks about his passion for the earth, his concern about climate change, and why he believes that working towards an impossible and an important goal is both life-giving and the best use of who God made him to be.Ron grew up in a working-class family in Milwaukee and graduated with his MBA and BBA with an accounting major from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. While beginning his career in public accounting, during which time he obtained his CPA, Ron eventually moved into banking. Entrepreneur and business owner, Carol Frank, came to the Hoffman Process for one clear reason: she wanted to find a life partner. In her early fifties and never married, Carol had just ended a year-long relationship. The beautiful thing was that Carol was ready. She knew that if she wanted a lasting partnership, she had to make a change. Carol shared this with a friend who happened to be a Hoffman graduate. Although this friend had mentioned Hoffman prior, it wasn't until this moment that Carol said, Yes, to the lasting change that would happen for her at the Hoffman Process. Within a week of this conversation, Carol had signed up. Within two weeks, she was in the classroom at White Sulphur Springs. This was in 2011. One year later, Carol ran into someone she had dated prior. This time, though, was different. They decided to have another date. After a bit, he said to her, "You are different. What's changed?" It was her week at the Hoffman Process. In the years since, Carol and her partner married, and he attended the Hoffman Process. Carol's transformation, during her Process and in the months and years after, has been profound. She healed deep family patterns. Carol came to understand why her parents were the way they were and found peace and forgiveness for them. She shares some beautiful moments with her mother directly following her Process. Carol's mother died just a short time later. These moments were a precious gift. Hoffman's tagline is, "When you're serious about change." And we mean it. People must truly be ready for the deep change that can happen in their lives. Carol was ready, and life was ready and waiting for her on the other side of her transformative week. We hope you enjoy this heart-warming conversation with Carol and Drew. More about Carol Frank: Carol is passionate about business, animals, and the intersection of the two. After starting her career as a CPA, she founded and operated three pet companies– a retail pet store, a wholesale distribution company, and a pet product manufacturing company.  Carol then leveraged her experience in both finance and entrepreneurship to start BirdsEye Advisory Group. This M&A Advisory firm helps pet company founders and entrepreneurs when they are ready to sell their business. She has a BBA in accounting from The University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Southern Methodist University.  Over the years, Carol has served in leadership roles within the pet industry. She's also served on the board of over a dozen nonprofit and business organizations, including the Dallas Zoo, the Denver Zoo Leadership Council, and Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation. Carol is a Trustee for The University of Colorado Foundation. She is also a member of the Colorado Chapter of the International Women's Forum. Her biggest passion is animals. Carol shares her life with her Eclectus parrot, Peri, and Daphne, a sweet, energetic Whoodle.  She loves skiing, biking, and birding. Follow Carol on LinkedIn. Justin holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in Economics from Emory University, where he met his Co-founder, Zach Dannett. Under their leadership, Tumble has grown significantly, scaling to high eight-figures in revenue within four years. Zach Dannett is the Co-founder and Co-CEO of Tumble. Zach earned his BBA in Finance from Emory University's Goizueta Business School in 2011, where he met his Co-founder, Justin Soleimani. In this episode… Breaking into the ecommerce ecosystem with a physical product — especially a large one like rugs — comes with unique logistical and financial hurdles. From expensive shipping costs to supply chain inefficiencies, many startups fail to develop a sustainable model. How did a product-focused, bootstrapped brand scale successfully without sacrificing profitability? Justin Soleimani and Zach Dannett, experts in DTC product development and operations, tackled this challenge head-on by designing a modular, collapsible rug that's easier and less expensive to ship. Justin and Zach spent over 15 months perfecting their design before launching, focusing on optimizing everything from the product's dimensions to its warehousing footprint. They emphasize the value of focusing on profitability from day one by cutting out unnecessary SKUs, refining your supply chain, and tailoring offerings to fit consumer needs and carrier constraints. In this episode of the Minds of Ecommerce podcast, Raphael Paulin-Daigle interviews Justin Soleimani and Zach Dannett, Co-founders and Co-CEOs of Tumble, about building a nearly nine-figure DTC brand. They share how product-first thinking drove early success using the value of modular design, shipping optimization, and bootstrapping strategies. Interview with Justin Reid, President & CEO of Troilus GoldOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/troilus-gold-tsxtlg-binding-lois-change-everything-6626Recording date: 14th March 2025 Troilus Gold stands at an inflection point as it advances its flagship copper-gold project in Northern Quebec toward production. With a recently secured $700 million debt financing package and gold prices reaching $3,000 per ounce, the company represents a compelling investment opportunity in the precious metals sector. The Troilus project boasts impressive scale and economics, including a 22+ year mine life producing over 350,000 gold equivalent ounces annually, an after-tax NPV of $3 billion, and potential for $350 million in annual free cash flow.Troilus has systematically addressed key developmental risks, creating a clear pathway to production. With $700 million in debt secured with favorable terms, permitting in final review stages, and an experienced development team assembled, the company has positioned itself for success. Pre-construction activities include detailed engineering with BBA (engineers behind Detour and Malartic) and active site preparation including pit dewatering.Management has crafted a sophisticated financing approach that minimizes dilution while ensuring adequate funding. Using a 70-30 debt-to-equity structure on the $1 billion capital requirement, finalizing offtake agreements for concentrate sales, and strategically positioning to monetize a new royalty or stream for up to $400 million, Troilus has created multiple funding options beyond traditional equity raises. With a current market capitalization of approximately $165 million against an after-tax NPV of $3 billion, Troilus presents a compelling valuation opportunity. CEO Justin Reid draws comparisons to similar-stage peers that have seen significant revaluation upon financing completion. Several macroeconomic factors further enhance the investment case, including rising gold prices, global copper concentrate shortages, the expanding margins created by Canadian dollar weakness, and increasing focus on secure critical minerals supply chains. The next 12 months present several potential catalysts that could drive revaluation, including finalization of offtake agreements, completion of royalty/stream financing, financial close on the debt package, final permitting approvals, and ultimately a construction decision. As Troilus Gold transitions from developer to producer, investors have a rare opportunity to participate in a gold-copper project that combines scale, economics, jurisdictional advantages, and strategic relevance in today's commodity environment.—Learn more: https://cruxinvestor.com/companies/troilus-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
