Today's guest is Brian Palermo. Brian is an actor, improv instructor, comedian and science communicator. He's performed and taught at The Groundlings in Hollywood, California, and has performed alongside many well-known comedians such as Will Ferrell, Eddie Izzard and Harland Williams. He is also one of the original cast members of The Crazy Uncle Joe Show, one of The Groundlings' weekly, long-form improv sets. From his experience as an improv instructor, he created Palermo Improv Training which is a communications consultancy that uses the experiential learning of improvisational theatre to upgrade human performance across businesses, the science enterprise and sketch and improv comedy. Brian has also appeared on multiple television shows and movies, which include Big Momma's House, The Social Network, Grown-ish, The Happytime Murders, and Modern Family, and that's only a partial list. Brian is also an accomplished writer, and his writing projects include Warner Brothers' Histeria! and Disney's The Weekenders and Dave The Barbarian, both created by Doug Langdale. He is also a co-author with Randy Olson and Dorie Barton of the 2003 book, Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking. I love getting to talk to someone who is enthusiastic about what they do, and Brian certainly is that. You'll hear how excited he is about improv and acting, and you'll enjoy the amount of love he has for performing and sharing this art form with everyone else. Find out about how you can learn from Brian how to use improv for comedy, corporate programs, and science communication at his website, palermoimprovtraining.com. And you can find all of his television and film credits at IMDB.com.

Science communication can often be challenging… and at times, make even the most talented scientists, reporters, and educators reluctant to take on the task of communicating scientific findings and new discoveries. In this episode, Brian Palermo infuses his expertise from his experience with improvisation and acting to help us better communicate science! By implementing strategies from improv (think of the “yes, AND” approach to conversations), Brian shows how all of us can easily communicate information successfully through story. Brian Palermo is a professional actor and communications expert who works with executives, business leaders, and audiences teaching the art of improv to present powerful (and funny) stories. In this Casual conversation Brian Palermo will help us: - implement improv in your daily conversations to better connect with peers, colleagues, even family members (even your kids)!! - enjoy excerpts from Brian’s book; Connection, Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking- where a former scientist, a story consultant, and an improv actor come together to give you the critical thinking of science combined with a century of Hollywood knowledge in the creation and shaping of stories! -laugh! Stories about science and space can be fun and inspirational, and Brian reminds us that storytelling should be . I really enjoyed this conversation with Brian and plan on continuing to follow him on TV, in the movies- and if you are in the LA area, you can find Brian perform as an improv stand up actor every Wednesday in the Groundlings in Hollywood. From the Show: Beth: Can we bridge our science-illiterate nation via story?? Brian: “We can, and I think that’s one great tool to do it, but you know, having the concept of, “We need to use story” is great, but having the ability to execute that is very hard. It’s not easy to construct a story – to take science data and construct it into narrative form is very difficult, AND, to deliver it, to present it to other humans is another challenge. It’s doable, but it takes work to get there.” -Brian Palermo from Casual Space Podcast To learn more about Brian Palermo, go to: https://www.palermoimprovtraining.com/about We mentioned Randy Olsen’s book: https://www.amazon.com/Houston-We-Have-Narrative-Science/dp/022627084X And of course, check out Brian’s book with Randy Olsen, and Dorie Barton, “Connection. We are just pleased as punch to be with the great Heather Matarazzo. You Might Know Her From The Princess Diaries 1 & 2, Saved!, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Scream 3, Hostel: Part II, The Devil’s Advocate, Roseanne, and The L Word. Heather so graciously talked to us about the motives behind Stacy Merkin’s terrible review of “Lez Girls” on The L Word, working with the late Garry Marshall in a big Disney production opposite her real life idol Julie Andrews, navigating Hollywood (and avoiding being typecast) after her breakthrough performance as Dawn Wiener in Welcome to the Dollhouse, getting a job from Roseanne Barr as a young person, and her experiences coming out as a lesbian to Ellen DeGeneres on the set of a Sheryl Crow music video. Many of us who are science-minded, or are champions of rational thought, may lament the fact that our messages often fall upon the deaf ears of a populace seemingly without the patience, nor care, for science literacy. Past Skepticality guest, Randy Olson, has spent his time working on ways to help people to understand and communicate information to a broad audience. Teaming with actors Dorie Barton and Brian Palermo, he has formed a well-proven storytelling methodology, which anyone can learn to use, to engage an audience and help people better understand complex information. In this episode of Skepticality, Derek sits down with Randy, Brian and Dorie to discuss their work, its origins, and how anyone can learn to become a better storyteller.
