Last year, Leonard and Jessie got a rare opportunity to interview Frank Oz at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas before a live audience. His alter egos are world-renowned, but Leonard and Jessie didn't focus on Miss Piggy or Yoda in this conversation. The main topic was directing movies, which Oz has done so well for so many years: The Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and What About Bob? are just a few of his credits. What is the through-line, if any, from puppetry to filmmaking. Listen and hear what the amazing Oz has to say.

"Hey, I tell you what is. Big city, hmm? Live, work, huh? But not city only. Only peoples. Peoples is peoples. No is buildings. Is tomatoes, huh? Is peoples, is dancing, is music, is potatoes. So, peoples is peoples. Okay?" With his dream project THE DARK CRYSTAL taking so much of his time and energy, Jim Henson was content to slim down his role on the next Muppet project and allow his right hand man Frank Oz to take the helm in his first solo directing feature. THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN would be the last Muppet film that Henson would be involved with before his untimely passing a few years later, but the film's legacy would have a lasting impact on his company, especially in the form of the Muppet Babies, who'd get their own Saturday morning cartoon, inspired by a sequence from the film. And let's not forget the media circus that surrounded the wedding of the century! In this episode, we give all the details on how the film came to be, from its concept, multiple script changes, release and beyond! Want to support the show? It's a family film. Starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Juliana Donald, Lonny Price, Louis Zorich, Dabney Coleman, and Art Carney. Written by Tom Patchett and Jay Tarses. Directed by Frank Oz

[School of Movies 2025] The second and third parts of the original Trilogy of Muppet movies made while Jim Henson was alive, voicing Kermit and taking a heavily active role in production. The former from 1981 is a jewel heist that brings the anarchic furry ones to England, populated by only polite people (a trope which causes the two of us endless amusement) and very much concerns itself with pushing puppetry magic tricks on the big screen to their limits. This one, directed by Jim was in the immense shadow of the original Muppet Movie. The latter, from 1984 brings them back to New York as college graduates who want to put on a big Broadway musical and run up against the gritty realities of real life (along with a cloyingly cute debut for The Muppet Babies. This more grounded take was directed by Frank Oz and for us it is a commissioned show by Dean R.   His alter egos are world-renowned, but Leonard and Jessie didn't focus on Miss Piggy or Yoda in this conversation, recorded in front of a live audience at Esther's Follies in Austin. The main topic was directing movies, which Oz has done so well for so many years: The Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and What About Bob? are just a few of his credits. What is the through-line, if any, from puppetry to filmmaking? Listen and hear what the amazing Oz has to say.

There's nothing quite like the bright lights of the big city - specifically, New York City. As they say, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere! So you can imagine my disappointment when I found out the Deluxe New York Virtual Getaway package I picked up was actually for Staten Island, New York and not New York City. Thankfully, our Hilton Star Trek Simulator does allow for movies to be shown in a panoramic setting…and there's one movie in our collection that just so happens to feature a killer's row of stars and the great city of Manhattan in all of it's grimy, sleazy, pre-Giuliani glory. I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we try to make it in the big city are fellow cinephiles and off-Broadway stars Ryan, Mike, and Jackie. Topics of discussion in this episode include Kermit's Don Draper turn; we witness Animal go full spider-mode as he attacks famed character actor Dabney Coleman; and finally, we're shocked to discover that Jim Henson beat Brad Bird to the punch when it comes to rats running a kitchen. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Follow Us on Twitter, Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.com. Got a movie you'd like us to watch? Hit us up and we'll talk about it on the show! That'll do it for this episode. Now start spreading the newwwws!!!

Together again! It's a new year and a new season of Podcast Part 3: The Part 3 Podcast, and we're taking the show to Broadway with 1984's The Muppets Take Manhattan, an honestly kind of bland entry in the Muppets pantheon... turns out you need a pretty strong story to make the Muppets work, and failing that you need a Charles Grodin or a Michael Caine to bring the gravitas. Sadly, like Jason Voorhees, the Muppets just simply aren't up to the task of taking Manhattan. But we love them anyway. Just in time for turkey day, in which we have a lot to be thankful for, comes this delightful discussion with plenty of fixins. Fresh from their excellent new podcast, A Tripp Through Comedy, two new guests join me but I've been following them ever since we all met during Triviaspotting. Ross Bratin and Tripp Burton join me to talk all about the filmography of Frank Oz, someone each of us love and grew up with - whether as a Muppet or as a director, his achievements and talent are immeasurable.  We start with his very first solo gig as a director, The Muppets Take Manhattan and go all the way up to his last narrative feature, Death at a Funeral. We discover some thematic ties and most importantly, we have lots of laughs due to Oz's incredible skills as a comedic filmmaker. In other words, mostly (but not entirely) a love fest for someone that we hope gets together again to make another film in the future. But if not, we're glad he accomplished so much throughout his career. Craig Miller's career may be a bit hard to categorize, but there's geeky goodness around every corner! He started as a Hollywood publicity and promotion guy, working with a who's who of studios (Lucasfilm, Disney, Universal, Warner Bros, Henson Associates, etc.) and on an amazing array of projects: Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Superman II, The Dark Crystal, and The Muppets Take Manhattan, to name but a few. He then went into animation, tackling a number of favorites, like The Smurfs, Transformers: Beast Wars,The Real Ghostbusters, and Curious George. His crowning achievement might be Pocket Dragon Adventures, which ran for 104 episodes and was a finalist for the Humanitas Prize!_____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In 1979 Kermit The Frog left the pond and headed for Hollywood. On the way he met a bear with a Studebaker, a weirdo with a bent nose, a pretty pig, and a dog that sand the blues, all while being hunted by the sinister owner of a frog legs restaurant chain. This debut Muppet feature filmed was called, appropriately, The Muppet Movie. In 1981 Kermit and Fozzie The Bear played news reporters who also happened to be brothers. Along with their photographer, Gonzo, they headed across the pond where they spoiled the attempted robbery of the Baseball Diamond. This gem, no pun intended, was The Great Muppet Caper. But today on Buzzn The Tower, we're heading to the city that never sleeps, the big apple, the city so nice they named it twice, as we put on makeup and dress up right and chat about a classic, The Muppets Take Manhattan.
