It was a Thing on TV: An Anthology on Forgotten Television

In 1983, as Laverne and Shirley came to an end and as Happy Days was wrapping up its run, Garry Marshall came up with this series about high school friends, one of whom became a computer millionaire and the other becoming his assistant.  The show came across as more of a showcase of Michael Richards' brand of physical comedy than anything else.  The best part of this pilot was the ads before and throughout the show.

Happy Days is the iconically classic 70s TV sensation about the 50s. Its legacy is unparalleled, its popularity ongoing. The show  launched a character who remains the embodiment of cool, Fonzie, and it cemented its cast into icon status in perpetuity.  That cast includes Donny Most, who played wise-cracking Ralph Malph, who, complete with his own catchphrase, “I still got it!” took a minor role and turned it into the stuff of legend.Don joins us this week to look back on his decades in Hollywood, the magic formula that brought Happy Days to fruition, and created a lasting legacy, and his tireless pursuit of creative expression that continues to keep his schedule full and fulfilling.Don shares stories about his first foray into show business, as a Catskills performing teen, his early guest starring roles on Emergency and Room 222, how he dropped out of college to maintain his acting momentum and landed a small role on Happy Days which he initially turned down until a fateful basketball playing encounter between his manager and Garry Marshall upped the incentives and sealed the deal. Donny and his cast-mates developed a strong, life-long bond which he credits to the collaborative set atmosphere, the genius of Garry Marshall and the strong example set by Ron Howard, which helped anchor egos aboard the Happy Days rocket ride. Type-casting came with the Happy Days territory and it took years or hard work on stage for new opportunities to present themselves. Don has since gone into directing and producing and his most recent roles are the most compelling and diverse of his career. Potsie took most of the lead vocals in the Happy Days band but Donny has been a singer since childhood and his most recent big-band, American Songbook recording, New York High has a BBC reviewer calling him, “The new Sinatra.”All this plus the truth behind the lawsuit against CBS,  Happy Days trivia and Don's dramatic Baywatch rescue! And, in recommendations, Fritz and Weezy are discussing Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval and Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, both on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:Donny MostDonny Most on WikiDonny Most on IMDBDonny Most on TwitterNew York High on Apple MusicFar HavenHarsen's Island RevengeUnsung HeroGallatin Comic Con AppearanceEllen DeGeneres: or Your Approval on NetflixMonsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story on NetflixGift of DemocracyMedia Path Podcast

This episode we go back to an early 2000's Disney hit, The Princess Diaries, directed by Garry Marshall, and based on the novel by Meg Cabot! This film showcases the talents of film royalty Julie Andrews and the fresh talent that was Anne Hathaway, but the silly and sweet tone of the film a significant departure from the novel, which doesn't shy away from all of the frustrations and drama you would expect from a young teenager circa 2000. Both have their own distinct sense of humor, but which one will we prefer?

Desplechin's Kings and Queen is a 21st-century classic, and a formative viewing experience for me, so it was a pleasure chatting about how movies first seized his imagination, about interviewing movie lovers of all stripes, the Garry Marshall movie he insisted on presenting at the cinematheque just before Cannes, reflecting on tragedy through movies, and the last movie he saw (and purchased). Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to actor/impressionist Jim Meskimen, son of actor Marion Ross. We speak to Jim (and his many guises – he really has an amazing ear for voices) about growing up the child of everyone's favorite TV mum, Mrs. C., Marion Cunningham from the 70s TV juggernaut Happy Days. We also delve into his mother's ‘issues' with her onscreen husband Tom Bosley but you are going to have to read her book, My Days: happy and Otherwise for those juicy details. Our conversation with Jim centers around his years growing up with a single parent mother who struggled to make it in Hollywood after her divorce from Jim's father. But we also talk about the salad days as well – checking out the set of Happy Days and the very homey, family atmosphere that show provided.  What started as a chance meeting with a casting director led his mother to becoming a household name in very little time at all. We also spoke to Jim about his years acting in film and TV and commercials (he was Colonel Sanders after all in numerous KFC ads), his then-recent film Gaslight as well as his ‘breakthrough' on America's Got Talent with his amazing impressions, I mean Jim-pressions. (Ahem). Plus we hear some terrific stories about Rich Little, Phyllis Diller and Clark Gable that you won't want to miss. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celebrity. Take a listen.

He also wrote the first episode of Season 11.  If there is one person besides the show's creators who can tell the complete story of Married with Children, this is the guy! Mr. Gurman has a new book out on April 23, 2024 entitled Married… With Children vs. the World: The Inside Story of the Shock-Com that Launched FOX and Changed TV Comedy Forever.  This book is the definitive inside story that you need to add to your Married with Children collection, and just like watching episodes of the show, you will want to read this book over and over again!  This book has been reviewed and endorsed by Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, David Garrison, and Michael G. Moye! Richard worked in Hollywood for over thirty-five years writing, producing, and showrunning such popular TV shows as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Still Standing, and of course Married… With Children. In 2017, he produced the documentary film This Is Bob Hope for the PBS series American Masters, and in 2020, along with director John Scheinfeld, he executive produced the documentary The Happy Days of Garry Marshall for ABC.  According to IMDB he has writing credits across 21 shows, producer credits on 15 shows, and has also been a creative consultant and story editor.  Richard holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley. In this interview, Annabel talks to Richard about his Hollywood career, his days on Married with Children, and of course about his book!  Topics include, a week in the life of a television writer on Married With Children, Barry Diller, Terry Rakolta, the global impact of the show and much MUCH more!  So, let's dust off the chairs in the nudie bar, put the Girlie Girl beer back on ice, and listen in to Mr. Richard Gurman!  This book is available where all books are sold.  You should go out and BUY this TODAY if you haven't preordered it already!
