Achoo! We're falling in love with the one and only Faith Prince. You Might Know Her From Modern Family, Emily in Paris, Melissa & Joey, Spin City, My Father the Hero, The Last Dragon, and Broadway productions of Guys & Dolls, A Catered Affair, Bells Are Ringing, and BOOP! Faith talked to us about grounding her character, Valentina, in the cartoonish plot of BOOP!, coping with fame during her star-making turn in Guys & Dolls, and leaning on her co-star Gerard Depardieu in one of her first leading roles on camera in My Father the Hero. Faith also shared stories from working as a Broadway replacement in the cumbersome costume of Ursula in The Little Mermaid and the notoriously “realistic” production of Anne as Miss Hannigan. All that, plus working with theatre legends like Jerome Robbins, Abe Burrows, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, doing dialect work at Joey Lawrence and Lily Collins, doing her best Cyndi Lauper in cult fave The Last Dragon (and making pals with Berry Gordy, and working with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell in the short-lived High Society. Were you in High School in the 80's like FCAC host Jason Cilo was? Probably you're not that old, but trust him; it was a time! 1989's 'Teen Witch' is many things: a fairly low-budget sort-of rip-off teen-comedy witch movie treading water in the wake of John Hughes movies and 'Heathers' and other 80's teenage films, most notably, but it has a charm and staying power all its own that has to be respected...or at least dissected in a full-on FCAC episodic treatment. For this episode, Jason is joined once again by frequent guests, the comedians Marianne Sierk (FCAC episodes 'Dirty Dancing' and 'Practical Magic') and Heather Thomson, America's Favorite Shut-In, Vista Bitch, and Airbnb Diamond Club Member. In this episode we also cover the safe harbor of middle-school theater programs, Jack Plotnick's brilliant send-up of that Robin Williams movie test that went around the interwebs a couple weeks back, and an obscure Tim Curry Halloween movie that Marianne loved to watch from her perch in her childhood Rochester, NY kitchen. Jason's pre-HS pastimes are also covered, including starting and stopping the 12" single LP version of Whodini's 'Freaks Come Out At Night' (which as I type this I can't believe I didn't cut into the episode) in order to transcribe the words as kids did in the barren wasteland that was American popular culture prior to the internet. Marianne demonstrates the distinctive patois of Rochester natives. Heather discusses her life-long typecasting as matronly adults. More on Teen Witch: Teen Witch is a 1989 American teen fantasy comedy film directed by Dorian Walker, written by Robin Menken and Vernon Zimmerman, and starring Robyn Lively and Zelda Rubinstein. Originally pitched as a female version of Teen Wolf (1985) and later reworked into a film of its own, the film features numerous impromptu rap musical numbers and has since become a cult classic aided by midnight theater showings and regular cable television airings (including through annual showings as part of ABC Family/Freeform's 13 Nights of Halloween). The film is also popular for its music and 1980s fashion nostalgia.

Drawn Together was raunchy, racy, rude, and revolutionary. In part two of this super-sized ship, we catch up with Cree Summer, the voice of Foxxy Love, Jack Plotnick, the voice of Xandir, and we meet an extremely foxxy cosplayer. Ahead of their time, the characters of Foxxy and Xandir gave Drawn Together an opportunity to explore race, sexuality, and representation. It was rare back then, but more timely than ever today. Whether you could get away with it on TV today or not, it is definitely worth talking about in the here and now. If you missed part one with the show’s creators and the voices of Captain Hero and Ling-Ling, definitely give it a watch/listen. In the biggest crossover since the Avengers, we’re jazzed to have Drinking and Screaming here to talk Rubber! Was this movie completely bizarre? YES. Did we all thoroughly enjoy it? ALSO YES. Despite being told not to look for reason in this movie, boy did we. And boy did we fail at finding reason. Don’t worry, we also get off track several times - this episode is also full of cactus talk, Molly’s fear of hotel beds, and how dangerous turkeys (and ducks) are. Today’s episode is with Tony and Grammy winner Jessie Mueller! I’m beyond thrilled to share this conversation with you because Jessie is someone I have long admired. Getting to sit down and pick her brain was a treat. Jessie talks about her focus on the work, her views on “strength”, and about her time on and off stage. She talks about what she feels has kept her grounded and her strong belief that your personal life feeds your life onstage. BIG NEWS! Jack Plotnick and I are teaming up on an ABA online workshop called, “Learn to Love Acting Again + Book More Work”. You may remember Jack from earlier this season! Join us in less than two weeks on Monday, August 5th at 7pm EST if you want to explore tools to get out of your own way and fall in love with the work again. Visit www.abalancingact.biz/workshops/ to learn more and secure your spot! See you there! Ready, Set, Action! Take a minute to think about what the word “strength” has meant to you up until this moment. Now think about how Jessie frames the word “strength” in her life. Make a list of the things or events that have shaped your “strength”. Let this list lift you up the next time you are feeling less than strong. I promise, you are strong and you can do this! It's Thursday and time again for Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us each week with her reviews of Maryland's regional stage. Today her spotlight is on Disaster!, the 2012 musical comedy created by Seth Rudetsky and Drew Geraci, and co-written by Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick. The musical made it to Broadway for a brief run in 2016, and it's now getting a new staging at Cockpit in Court Summer Theater, on the campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, in Essex. At the heart of this nostalgic spoof are the hit songs of the 70s and 80s -- played here by an 8-piece band under the direction of Michael deVito -- and the cinematic earthquakes, tidal waves, and infernos that were the staples of the era's disaster flicks. Directed and choreographed by Todd Pearthree, the musical features performances by Shane Lowry as Chad, John Andrew as Scott, Brian Jacobs as Professor Ted Scheider, and Lisa Pastella as Sister Mary Downy.Disaster! continues at Cockpit in Court through Sunday, June 30. After catching "Disaster" on Broadway, Dennis heads backstage to talk to the men behind the musical Jack Plotnick and Seth Rudetsky. They wrote the show together, Jack directs and Seth co-stars as the disaster expert who no one will believe. They talk about how they chose the 70's songs that made the show, deciding what characters will love and what characters will die, the night the reviews came out, their high and low points and in Jack's case, watching the show on opening night with Tina Fey sitting right behind him. Other topics include: capturing the sexiness of the 70's in the costumes, the sight gag that went terribly wrong one night, the night Rachel York went into the "white room," and the set piece Jack would like to take home. www.disastermusical.com
With its suggestive exclamation point, the title of the new Broadway musical Disaster! hints at the campy, over-the-top qualities it brings to the Nederlander Theatre. Set on a cruise ship precariously moored along the Hudson River, the show spoofs disaster movies such as The Poseidon Adventure and Earthquake that were popular in the 1970s. It also features a number of disco hits and pop songs of the era. Written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, the production has assembled a cast of well-known Broadway names: Faith Prince, Roger Bart, Adam Pascal and Kerry Butler, among them. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has experienced this Disaster! first-hand and weighs in on its less-than calamitous results.
Dennis visits the Silver Lake home of actor Kevin Chamberlin who will soon be seen in the Broadway musical "Disaster," a disaster movie send-up with 70's songs co-wrtten by Seth Rudetsky and former podcast guest Jack Plotnick. Kevin talks about the thrill of returning to Broadway, the worst thing that ever went wrong for him on stage and going to the Tonys three times as a nominee (for Dirty Blonde, Suessical and The Addams Family musical). Kevin also talks about his on camera work in films like Die Hard with a Vengeance, Road to Perdition and the recent TV movie A Christmas Melody starring and directed by Mariah Carey. Kevin shares fun stories about Madeline Kahn, James Lapine, Mary Tyler Moore, Tom Hanks, Hugh Jackman, Susan Anton and Elaine Stritch. Other topics include: working with young actors on the Disney channel series Jessie, his biggest frustration, the joy of being "offer only," the song that makes him cry, the culture shock of L.A. and the audition he walked out of. Follow him on Twitter @kevinchamberlin
Jack Plotnick's philosophy towards creativity is so spiritually aligned with my own, that I think we might have been separated at birth. I've directed Jack in a few commercials, marveled at his acting chops in films like "Meet The Fockers", "Rubber" and "Gods And Monsters". Then I discovered his directorial debut, the feature film "Space Station 76". Jack and I chat about creating one's own content, setting a date to make it happen, and giving yourself boundaries, a theme that's come up on this show a few times lately. Most of all, Jack rejects the negativity that can hound us in the biz. In his words, "the world is going to rain shit down on you sometimes, but keep going cuz it's also going to give you great gifts along your way." Enjoy and check out "Space Station 76" on iTunes. thank you. Jordan This episode is about an hour and 15 minutes. Rate us on iTunes, btw. Don't know why but that's what the podcast folks tell me to say.
Director/co-writer Jack Plotnick and VFX supervisor Billy Brooks discuss the independent science fiction period black comedy, available now On Demand.
Dennis brings 2014 to a close with a round-up of check-ins with past podcast guests Jackie Clarke, Patrick Tobin, Jack Kenny, Miss Coco Peru, Jack Plotnick, Glenn Gaylord and Danny Casillas. Also included is a Dickie Goodman-style flashback from Dennis's childhood having to do with Star Wars and Farrah Fawcett...and Dennis's cover of the Sam Harris song "The Rescue," discussed in the Sam Harris podcast in August, which was recorded in a cabin on a cruise ship. There's some Manilow in there, too. Happy New Year and thanks your all your support throughout 2014.
Dennis visits the one and only Miss Coco Peru in her lovely San Fernando Valley home for an emotional rollercoaster of an interview. Dennis shares the touching coincidence he experienced at Coco's February show "She's Got Balls." He then pulls himself together to discuss other topics like Coco's origin story, her Terms of Endearment catharsis and the power of vulnerability. Her hilarious "Grand Theft Auto" YouTube video is also broken down as her memories of making out with Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet in Girls Will Be Girls. Also on the docket: Coco's yearly visits to her husband Rafael's home country of Spain, the nudist resort gig that turned out to be awful, Coco's encounters with stars like Allison Janney, Taylor Dayne, Bea Arthur, Anna Nicole Smith, Jeffrey Tambor and Ben Vereen and the poop sketch that Dennis collaborated on with Coco and Jack Plotnick as Evie Harris that scandalzed the LA charity world. Steve Cooper talks with actor Jack Plotnick. Jack got his first big break playing recurring characters on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Since then he has been a staple on TV and in movies. He has been a co-star or a regular on shows such as Action, Drawn Together, Reno 911, Ellen, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joan of Arcadia, Lovespring International and The Mentalist. He has also guest starred in series such as Two and a Half Men, House M.D., Supernatural, Nip/Tuck, Glee, Dads, Seinfeld, Franklin & Bash, Criminal Minds and many others and has appeared in dozens of national commercials. His movie appearances include Meet the Fockers, Mystery Men, Beverly Hills Chihauhau and Reno 911! Miami. He recently made his directorial debut in a film he stars in and co-wrote, Space Station 76 and will be directing a play he also co-wrote on Broadway next year.
After interviewing Jack about his new film Space Station 76, Dennis and Jack recorded this extra episode where Jack responds to the question, "What message was left on your voicemail or answering machine that you played over and over?" by actually PLAYING a bunch of old messages for us and narrating. Dennis shares a couple messages, too. The episode ends with a recording from 1998 of Jack as a pre-Girls Will Be Girls Evie Harris singing "Evie," a parody of the song "Roxie" from Chicago while Dennis clunks away on piano. The recording was for a performance for Dennis's book launch for "Misadventures in the (213)" in which Evie played the role of the landlady in the book. Hence, all the references to rent checks, etc. (The accompanying photo was from the Quest for the Crown benefit in 2000. Dennis wrote, Evie commentated and Kristen Johnston was one of the judges)

Dennis visits his old friend, filmmaker and actor Jack Plotnick on the eve of the release of his sci-fi dramedy Space Station 76, starring Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, Matt Bomer, Jerry O'Connell and Marisa Coughlan. Jack talks about the inspiration for the film, its long, winding road to fruition and what's it like to watch Matt Bomer pleasure himself with a robot hand. Also discussed are Jack's bound-for-Broadway jukebox musical "Disaster!" (co-created with Seth Rudetsky), what it was like to be part of "Ellen's" game-changing Coming Out episode, putting Sir Ian McKellan to sleep on the set of "Gods and Monsters" and the early days of his illustrious "Girls Will Be Girls" character Evie Harris. (FYI, the photo of us was taken at our friends Guy and Nir's Malibu wedding in the fall of 2013 and I'm rocking the Mad Men suit I talked about in the podcast "So This Is What Striking Looks Like.") More Jack Plotnick fun to come in an Extra episode. Stay tuned.

One of the most beloved films featuring drag queens of all time is Girls Will Be Girls, where three actresses at various stages on the Hollywood food chain navigate the minefield of love, aging and ambition. The film features the raunchy ensemble of Coco Peru, Varla Jean Merman and Evie Harris, all drag queens who had separate careers but were brought together like Charlies Angels to create a dynamic comedy trifecta. We heard that after this photo was taken, Evie Harris had a three way with Shields and Yarnell. Photo by Dennis Hensley. The entire project was a way for openly gay TV writer Richard Day and his friend Jack Plotnick to vent their fRustrations as gay men working in Hollywood.Although Girls will be Girls was a hit with critics and audiences, the making of a sequel was cost prohibitive. Now, thanks to digital video cameras and fundraising tools like Kickstarter, fans raised the funds needed to create the apocalyptic sequel coming out next year: Girls Will be Girls 2012.Today we are joined by Jack Plotnick, the man behind Evie Harris sharing with us the anguished journey of actors in Hollywood trying to find meaning in their lives and the origins of Evie Harris, a washed-up, alcoholic, aging C-List actress.➤ What Coco Peru and Varla Jean Merman have to say about their co-star when she’s not around.➤ How being a sloppy drag queen got him working with Sir Ian McKellen on the Oscar nominated film Gods and Monsters.➤ Learning how to love acting and auditions as an actor.➤ And daily affirmations actor and trans folks can say to find the joy and purpose in life.
