That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a deep dive into one of the most chaotic and heavily criticized seasons in Saturday Night Live history: Season 20, also known as The Bad Boys Club Season. Following the departure of core cast members like Phil Hartman, Rob Schneider, and Julia Sweeney, the show found itself leaning hard into the rowdy, often crude humor of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and David Spade—while sidelining much of the female cast, including Janine Garofalo, who left midway through the season. The cast was bloated, the writing uneven, and the press relentless. Nick walks through the entire season with behind-the-scenes stories, including how Jeff Daniels nearly suffered a serious makeup mishap, why Dan Aykroyd unofficially hosted instead of the listed John Goodman, and how the writers struggled with brilliant hosts like Bob Newhart, John Turturro, David Hyde Pierce, and Courtney Cox—while completely losing control during hosting gigs by George Foreman and Deion Sanders. Despite its rough reputation, the season had its moments: Norm Macdonald took over the Weekend Update desk, Molly Shannon made a strong debut halfway through, and both Damon Wayans and Dana Carvey returned to deliver some much-needed highlights. You'll also hear Stuart Smalley hilariously scolding the public for ignoring his movie, and Bill Murray delivering a moving tribute to the late Michael O'Donoghue. It's a full look at one of SNL's messiest, most fascinating seasons—flawed, but unforgettable. [Ep 122]

Valerie and I take a scalpel to some well loved movies this season. First there was the Nightmare Before Christmas and now Sleepless in Seattle. I'm not a believer in ‘magic love' so I find the premise of the movie silly, but there are some good examples of tension. However, under the microscope of Valerie's 4 Story Questions, this movie is lacking in some fundamental storytelling scaffolding. Without clear wants there isn't anything meaningful at stake. The take away - the story could be better. There, I said it. Originally aired as episode 169 on October 22, 2021. Gavin Creel is an actor, singer and songwriter who received a Tony Award for his performance as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly!, starring Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. He made his Broadway debut originating the role of Jimmy Smith in Thoroughly Modern Millie, for which he received his first Tony Award nomination, and has additional Broadway credits that include La Cage aux Folles, She Loves Me, Mary Poppins, Waitress, and Hair, which earned him his second Tony Award nomination. Gavin originated the role of Elder Price in the West End production of Book of Mormon (earning an Olivier Award), and reprised the role on Broadway and the US National Tour. On television he co-starred alongside Julie Andrews in ABC's Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, and stars in Ryan Murphy's new spin off American Horror Stories. From conservative Ohio, to the lights of Broadway, Gavin is a proud member of the theatre community, but also talks candidly about the mental, physical and emotional toll of a life on the stage. He reflects on the last few years through the pandemic, how he went “inward” in a way he never has before, and opens up about the ways in which therapy - “unconditional acceptance” and support - have helped him. Gavin talks about using his voice to support activists/activism, and shares the story of his involvement in getting the green light for the Broadway's Hair to miss a show and join the National Equality March in Washington, D.C in 2009. He also chats about the history of Broadway Bares, and the magic of “I Put A Spell On You: The Sanderson Variant”. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There are few actors out there with such a wide range and ability that allows audiences to see them in so many different lights. The good guy, the bad guy, the wing man, the loner, the neurotic, the strong willed...the list would go on forever if I listed all the options. One person with this quality is the great David Hyde Pierce. David appears in the new horror/drama The Exorcism along side Russell Crowe. And what better way to celebrate an exorcism film by following up the conversation with a dive into the "Pillow Talk" revival, Down With Love.

Sailing back to 2002 and returning aboard the HMS Part of Your World, Mixie helps guide Christian through Treasure Planet - the most expensive traditionally animated film of all time and one of Disney's most infamous flops! Along the way, the two raise their glasses to Emma Thompson, David Hyde Pierce, and Brian (not Doyle) Murray, cross swords over the one film's less popular characters, and attempt to piece together why this film and the Disney pirate film that came out the next year had vastly different fortunes.

Appointment Television and Ars Technica's Andrew Cunningham returns to talk about the return of Frasier, and whether it was necessary. Should the creators have taken a hint from the universe (and David Hyde Pierce)? Could the re-imagining of the beloved original have worked with a few conceptual tweaks? Would we advise you to watch it, or take Eddie for a walk instead? It's 1962, and feminist Barbara Novak pens a best-selling book that details the drawbacks of love. She encourages women to forgo serious relationships with men in favor of independence, workplace achievements and satisfying sex. Despite her success, many men are taken aback by her progressive views, including slick writer Catcher Block, who decides to expose Barbara as a fraud by making her fall in love with him. However, his plan has unexpected consequences. [NB: Due to file-corruption issues, this episode's sound isn't stellar; apologies for any inconvenience!] For a third-choice star in a first-draft action movie, Dennis Quaid's quite good in 2008's Vantage Point, a fridge-magnet-poetry "thriller" script whose "what if In The Line Of Fire + 24 + Dave gave DQ the adrenaline trots" logline invited multiple weary comparisons to Rashomon in (uniformly negative) reviews. Despite dialogue some film student shook out of the Michael Bay Presents: Boggle cup, a Frogger algorithm used as a car chase, inconsistent blocking, an inert title, and Quaid adopting the wrong posture for a Secret Service agent, we did find a handful of things to enjoy, like William Hurt doing an imitation of that flappy dude outside the car wash while getting shot, and imagining Niles Crane listing budget rental-car models. The president is a clone, but there's a Quaid In Full episode to distract you, so: who cares! It's still NOT ON DISNEY+ MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney! And for our second week of Not On Disney+ Month, the randomizer goes all the way back to 2003 to pick a Disney-acquired 20th Century Fox romantic comedy that asks the bold cinematic question, "Hey, remember when romantic comedies didn't suck? Remember when they were actually romantic and actually funny and you'd actually enjoy watching them? Yeah, us neither, but apparently the director of that cheerleader movie does, and he somehow convinced Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bridget Jones, Niles Crane and the lady from Leap of Faith to star in his Rock Hudson/Doris Day fan film, so what the hell, let's market it so piss-poorly it won't even really develop the cult following it'll richly deserve!" When you look at some of the greatest sitcoms of all times many either had a spin-off series or there were at least plans to make one. Cheers was no different. Only four months after the bar where everybody knows your name closed for the final time we found ourselves once again catching up with Dr. Frasier Crane. The producers of the new show didn't want the network demanding that his Cheers costars fill the first season with guest spots so they decided to take the character and move him as far from Boston as possible. Now we see Frasier moving back to his hometown of Seattle to work as the host of a call-in psychiatry show on talk radio. "Frasier" went on to be one of the most critically acclaimed comedy series of all time and one of the most successful spin-off series in television history. Despite the show's pilot episode winning multiple Emmy Awards, can it also successfully earn itself an S1E1 green-light? Listen as we deep dive Episode 1 of Frasier, "The Good Son". www.S1E1POD.com Starring: Kelsey Grammer, Jane Leeves, David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin, John Mahoney & Moose The Dog Instagram and Twitter: S1E1POD
