On this episode, we're holding a very important meeting of the Special People Club, and inviting our much older crush to dine on some Hostess snacks, while we cover the pitch black comedy from 1995, Welcome to the Dollhouse. This movie was written and directed by Todd Solondz. We explore how this movie was a huge part of the indie movie boom in the mid-90s, and how this launched the careers of both its director (Todd Solondz), and its star (Heather Matarazzo). We also try to dissect some of the themes that this movie tackles, and why it's been such a beloved classic for the marginalized and the misfits.----Article Referenced:"How we made Welcome to the Dollhouse", The Guardian, Phil Hoad, Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016Click HereIntro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Inspired by her time as a student at the Connecticut girls' boarding school Rosemary Hall in the 1960s, the film follows new student Odette Sinclair (Gaby Hoffman) as she meets the ICONIQUE headmistress Miss McVane (Lynn Redgrave) and falls in with a new clique led by Kirsten Dunst's Verena Von Stefan. No sooner is Odie welcomed in than their friend Tweetie (my girl Heather Matarazzo) overhears the school board's plans to merge Miss Godard's into a co-ed school with the nearby St Ambrose Academy. This sets the films antics into motion, pits the boy crazy Tweetie and Tinka, an aspiring "actress-folk singer-slut", against Verena and brainiac Momo (our girl Merritt Wever) and eventually leads Odie to stage a sit-in to demand the girls at Miss Godard's have a voice in the future of their school.Brodie is joined by her bff Anton De Ionno to discuss the sad saga behind this film's release, its legacy in our lives and many spiritual connections to Gilmore Girls.See AlsosHaley Mlotek's piece in MetrographInterview with Sarah Kernochan in Business Insider + in Flashback Films26 years before The Holdovers, Disney buried the best boarding school comedyPeter Biskind's 2004 book Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent FilmAnton recommendsAn Unmarried WomanLove Is a Drag: For Adult Listeners Onlydry-humping Hosted on Acast. The Princess Diaries is a 2001 coming of age Romantic Comedy directed by Garry Marshall. This is the story of Mia Thermopolis played by Anne Hathaway. Mia is a highschool student in San Francisco, definitely not super cool she only has two friends Lilly played by Heather Matarazzo and her older brother Michael played by Robert Schwartzman. There is something Mia does not know however and we learn very quickly, technically she is the princess of the country of Genovia. This film also features Mandy Moore as the classic highschool villain Lana. Mia has a grandmother the Queen Regent of Genovia played by the great Julie Andrews. And a point of fact regarding how big of a smash hit this film was. This grossed 165 million dollars at the box office on a budget of around 26. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Back to the usual grind this week now that spooky season has come to a close as the guys discuss The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. They're not alone though as they're joined by returning guest Sharon Horwatt, who knows an awful lot about this Disney franchise (is 2 movies enough for a franchise?)! Could John Rhys-Davies be playing a more cartoonish villain? What the hell is going on with Chris Pine's hair? Why couldn't Julie Andrews rap during the mattress-surfing party?! Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 103 Sam is joined Olly Mann, writer, broadcaster, and podcaster. His work includes Answer Me This!, The Modern Mann, The Week Unwrapped, and Today In History with The Retrospectors. Olly has chosen Todd Solondz's 1995 low-budget feature Welcome to the Dollhouse (87 minutes). The dark comedy was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and stars Heather Matarazzo, Brendan Sexton III, and Eric Mabius. Sam and Olly discuss podcasting as a full time job, first watching the film in the mid-90s, Jewish on-screen representation and what - exactly - is 'cheeky factual'. Katie and Bridget randomly go rock climbing as they re-watch the movie: The Princess Diaries! It's a story all about how if your estranged grandma comes back into your life, when your also estranged dad recently dies, while your not estranged but definitely eclectic mom kept it all a secret from you just cause(!) - Well, then you just might be a princess....?! Come along as we meet Mia, a girl who just wants to be invisible but who also wants to drive a mustang. She is thrust into the princess lifestyle by our mother Julie Andrews - er, we mean, by the Queen of Genova, aka her grandmother. Along the way we've got an AI generated high school experience, friends who are kinda mean to us unless we suit their needs, and lame guys who either name their boats after themselves or just awkwardly eat Skittles as their personality... Look this is a quirky movie okay!? Released in 2001, it stars Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, Heather Matarazzo, and Mandy Moore.

Troy and Roger hop a train to beautiful and exotic Slovakia as they tackle Eli Roth's surprisingly capable sequel offering Hostel 2. Better characters, memorable kills, a smorgasbord of gore, and an unexpected finale that leaves you saying “good for her” are all reasons why you should consider giving this often under-appreciated follow up another go! Allow yourselves to be seduced as your favorite gays romance you with their heavy European accents, discussing in depth enticing topics such as the undeniable allure of one Bijou Phillips, heavily implied lesbian undertones and why we're absolutely here for them, the many reasons why nobody would actually want to go to Slovakia and yet for some reason… here we are, and that scene… yes THAT scene featuring the doe eyed Heather Matarazzo! You know the one we're talking about, and if you don't you better friggin' watch it immediately! So raise your glass of apple cider and brace yourselves for some sexy good times, because it's time for a toast! Nostrovia! To your health! Find out more at http://www.darknightofthepodcast.com

Sit back and let Al Pacino in full ham force wash over you in 1997's The Devil's Advocate. How is Charlize Theron so good so early in her career (and despite that Southern accent)? Are the offensive parts of this movie that way because it's about the literal devil, or because the 90s just sucked that much? Why is this movie trying to be deeper than it can ever actually achieve? And is Randall recording this episode directly from the circle of hell where this movie is playing on repeat? We'll let you know as soon as we finish digesting all this fine pork product.

Heather Matarazzo steps back Behind The Rope. Heather chats about the full trajectory of her career from her first film, The Sundance winning “Welcome to The Dollhouse” to her current days as a working actress “making it” in Hollywood. Heather chats Dollhouse - what it was like to lead a feature film as your first project, how life changed after and why this film is still so beloved as the teen angst voice of “other” or “different” for many generations to come. We chat hot takes on some of Heather's projects after Dollhouse - The Princess Diaries, Scream, Roseanne, The L Word and Grey's Anatomy to name a few. Heather opens up about the struggles she has faced over the years in Hollywood trying to find work, the many misperceptions the public has about life in the biz, her viral tweets on the subject earlier this year, her own struggles with mental health as a result and where she, and Hollywood, are today regarding it all! Finally, as a member of the LGBTQIA community, Heather talks representation, new movie “The Mattachine Family” and, of course, her wife's tribute book to Queen Madonna because as we often say, all roads lead back to Madame M. @heathermatarazzo @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BROUGHT TO YOU BY: CBDISTILLERY - www.thecbdistillery.com (15% Off. What a dark and yet somehow warm indie film. I vaguely remember watching this in high school and thinking it was really dark and mean but still there was something else there I liked. I enlisted Jules, the queen of quirky comedies to review this one with me. In this episode we discuss our upcoming debut at FanExpo, getting your babysitter's license, Tim Horton's pizza, the cheerleader effect of Raisin Bran, how Jenna Malone and Chris Klein are the same, cancelling Maddy for hating on Mandy Moore, being cool and Christian at the same time, Liv idolizing MLP for her venti sized drinks, the aerodynamics of the Captain Crunch hat hairstyle, the type-casting of Heather Matarazzo, singing at school, having a crush on someone you've never spoken to and SO MUCH MORE!!!
Not all girls want to play with dolls. It's been 27 years since Todd Solondz's Welcome to the Dollhouse, and we're here to tell you that it's still savage AF. Seth Subin from @jerkofalltrades joins us again to discuss this pitch black coming-of- age comedy, and we really just want to give Dawn Wiener a hug and tell her it's all going to be alright. We get into the 90s icon that is Heather Matarazzo as the ultimate outsider in us all. Dawn launched her to bigger movies like 54, Princess Diaries, and Saved. Matarazzo's Dawn Wiener is just as potent now as it was when we first got our hands on a copy of this movie. We talk about Brendan Sexton III, as the type of damaged bully we all remember growing up, and the beautiful himbo Steve Rogers (played by Eric Mabius). This movie is essential 90s cinema, and we're not entirely sure if a movie like it could be made today. This week, comedian and host of the "Still Got It" podcast Celey Schumer joins us to discuss the movie that made Anne Hathaway a star, "The Princess Diaries." We try to make sense of the myriad of accents in the movie, break down the Genovian line of succession, judge Heather Matarazzo's conditional friendship, and have a retrospective on the interview in which Whitney Houston denied smoking crack while admitting to smoking crack.
