A little something different this week: we're looking at two Soderbergh-scripted adaptations of international genre films! First, Soderbergh adapted Ole Bornedal's 1994 NATTEVAGTEN as 1997's NIGHTWATCH, also directed by Bornedal, starring post-TRAINSPOTTING, pre-PHANTOM MENACE Ewan McGregor as a night watchman at a spooky morgue. Next, Soderbergh turned Fabián Bielinsky's 2000 Argentine heist smash NUEVA REINAS (NINE QUEENS) into 2004's CRIMINAL, the directorial debut of Gregory Jacobs starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. Why did Sodey do this? Is there anything of the man in these adaptations? Do you need to watch four films before you listen to this episode? The answer to the last question is no! Fun ep, please enjoy. Further Reading: Steven Soderbergh: Interviews, ed. Dark science, cloning, secrets only the scoopers knew! We talk about the rumor that a second season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi' is in development for Disney Plus. And as with any rumor about Obi-Wan, it gained a lot of steam. We get into why we are not buying this rumor at all, as we do not believe there is a second season of the series in the works. But we DO think Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan in AHSOKA season 2, and Shin Hati actor Ivanna Sakhno spoke briefly about the “bigger” upcoming season. That plus tough questions in our segment WILL OF THE FORCE and we feature your submitted questions in #AskTheResistance! The Blind Guys get berated by Clodagh this week as they appear to be just messing around and having a chat. Is it because of the good weather? Maybe. Tesla's autonomous (driverless) cars in Austin Texas appear to have thrown caution to the wind and are driving around breaking the speed limits, but hard breaking when they see the cops! Could it be those little rascals The Minions are being naughty perhaps? Clodagh and Óran had a great laugh last weekend when in County Cork, where a local tried to convince them that a 50-kilowatt charging station is a 'superfast' charger! You're not pulling the wool over Clodagh's eyes, Mr Man!! Mohammed has recently been paint balling. Did he hit anything? Let's find out. And Óran has been trying his cooking skills, yes, he made a pizza! Or did he? (No. No he didn't. He just took it out of the oven! – Clodagh) In TV Corner, we are talking about 'The Long Way Home' on Apple TV. In the second episode, Ewan McGregor and Charlie Bowman are travelling through the Netherlands on their vintage motorbikes. They taste a local delicacy, raw herring. Apparently, it tastes like uncooked salmon fillet - YUCK!!! They also visit a village up north where people jump onto a pole in the middle of a river and try to get to the other side. Jan and Mo get quite excited about this activity! But wouldn't it be easier if they just walked?! Meta have launched their newest smart glasses. They have teamed up with Oakley, the fashion brand. Will you be buying the latest trendy specs? Let us know at blindguyschat@gmail.com. And Mohammed says Meta glasses might be getting a software upgrade in September, yay! Nick and Angela greet good friends who love to travel on two wheels. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman bring their passion for adventure to Dish following the release of their latest TV show, Long Way Home. Their fourth motorcycle trip together sees them plot a path through 17 European countries on two vintage bikes. The Long Way series began in 2004 when the pair embarked on an epic route from London to New York, via Asia, in Long Way Round. Each trip they take is characterised by beautiful landscapes, chance encounters, good (and not so good) food and Charley and Ewan's close friendship. Ewan McGregor has been on our screens since his acting debut in 1993. His hugely successful career includes unforgettable roles in Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Star Wars, Salmon FIshing in the Yemen and Moulin Rouge!. Charley, who met Ewan on a film set in 1997, is well known for his TV adventures, including By Any Means, which saw him travel from Ireland to Australia using any modes of transport he could find. He has also participated in the Dakar Rally, known to be one of the world's toughest and most dangerous motorsport competitions. There's not a lot of room to spare on this week's table, with a feast of food and drink to tempt our guests. At Ewan's request, Angela serves a slice of nostalgia in the form of Melba toast with chicken liver pâté, smoked mackerel pâté and pâté de campagne, before bringing out the haggis bon-bons. Drinks are negronis, tweaked by Charley, who suggests switching the gin for tequila, and a Pentire coastal spritz for Ewan. This is followed by an epic tomahawk steak with spicy dipping sauce and fries, paired with a glass of Journey's End Sir Lowry Cabernet Sauvignon. After arriving on motorbikes (a Dish first), Charley and Ewan quickly settle at the Dish table, where chat moves from boiled egg banter to bagpipes and classic Mongolian hospitality. Charley shares one of his favourite recipes and Ewan reminisces on an unforgettable meeting with Delia Smith. The episode finishes with Nick and Angela checking out the bikes, a moment you can watch on our YouTube channel as part of the full episode. You can watch Long Way Home on Apple TV+ now. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode. Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions.
For the past 20 years, fast friends Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor have been wandering the globe on an eclectic mix of motorcycles. “Long Way Home,” the intrepid pair's fourth and most recent television series, captures their journey through 17 European countries aboard a resurrected 1973 BMW R75/5 and a well-traveled 1974 Moto Guzzi Eldorado.“There's something wonderful about a big trip,” Londoner Boorman relates to host Mark Long on this episode of the “Driven to Ride” podcast. “Sometimes, it almost feels like you're sort of on holiday and you don't want the holiday to end. You've got that freedom of the open road, you're carrying everything on the motorcycle that you need, and there you are, just going off.”While some aspects of their adventures haven't changed much since Boorman and McGregor set off on their inaugural 2004 trip—“two friends riding round the world together and, against the odds, realizing their dream”—the cameras used to record the experience, plus the advent of in-helmet communication, have revolutionized the process. But, as Boorman attests, it's still escaping. Film journalist and friend of the show Brandon Streussnig returns to discuss Danny Boyle's debut film Shallow Grave, a British riff on the 90s neo-noir template, self-described by Boyle and his collaborators as their take on the Coen's Blood Simple. The film chronicles a trifecta of beautiful, sociopathic yuppies sharing an Edinburgh flat (Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor) who unravel after the untimely death of their new roommate and the discovery of a suitcase full of cash. Frenetic, aesthetically bold, and brimming with terrific performances from its cast of newcomers, Shallow Grave stood in stark opposition to the more muted social realism of established British filmmakers of the era like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach and showcased the collaborative power of Boyle, McGregor, screenwriter John Hodge, and producer Andrew Macdonald only a handful of years removed from their landmark feature, Trainspotting. We discuss Boyle's aesthetic inclinations, his history in the theater, and how the cinematic medium can liberate a particular type of artist from the confines of the stage. Then, we unpack the film's stellar trio of performances, its economy of character, and especially McGregor's star-making turn that suggests the greatness he would achieve with Boyle in their next several collaborations. Finally, we explore the film's ire for post-Thatcherite individualism, its attacks on the moral vacuum of the upwardly mobile, the dramatic irony of a film about the corruptability of money even for those who don't need it.In addition, we spend a brief moment looking forward to Boyle's latest film 28 Years Later (a full Bonus episode on the film coming later this week) and what it supposes for Boyle's late period.Follow Brandon Streussnig on Twitter. In this powerful and timely episode, Adam sits down with Olivier Award-winning director-turned-writer Mark Rosenblatt, the creative force behind Giant, the searing and sensational play that explores the genius and the darkness of Roald Dahl. Starring the legendary John Lithgow—who also took home an Olivier for Best Actor—Giant dives deep into the tangled web of brilliance, grief, controversy, and antisemitism that surrounded one of the world's most beloved and most complicated authors. Recorded in front of a live audience in central London to mark the 20th anniversary of The Heart Cells Foundation, this episode celebrates creativity, courage, and the quiet revolution of stepping into your truth. Just three days before filming, Mark received his own Olivier at the Royal Albert Hall, presented by Ewan McGregor and Elizabeth Debicki. In an emotional and honest conversation, he shares what it felt like to be recognised for his first-ever play and the journey that took him from self-doubt to centre stage. Mark reveals how the seed for Giant was planted when Sir Nicholas Hytner casually suggested he might try writing—an idea that sat dormant until lockdown gave him the space to bring it to life. Inspired by his own childhood love of Dahl's stories, and compelled by the writer's antisemitic remarks during the Lebanon War era, Mark began to unpick the moral complexity of Dahl's legacy. Rather than cancelling Dahl, Mark chose to examine him—with empathy, intellectual honesty, and a dramatic lens that lets the audience grapple with their own beliefs. We talk about the emotional weight of writing as a British Jew exploring antisemitism, the tension of launching a controversial play amid the Israel-Gaza conflict, and how Dahl's personal tragedies—from his daughter's death to his son's life-altering accident—informed both his work and Giant itself. With John Lithgow perfectly cast as Dahl (thanks to Hytner's inspired suggestion) and Elliot Levey winning Best Supporting Actor, Giant has become one of the most talked-about plays in the West End. A Broadway transfer is on the cards. This episode is a tribute to the healing power of art, the bravery of reinvention, and the impact of asking bold questions in a world that often demands easy answers. Special thanks to The Heart Cells Foundation for their incredible work and for hosting this unforgettable live event. www.heartcellsfoundation.com admin@heartcellsfoundation.com

It's been 20 years since Long Way Round changed the face of motorcycle travel—and inspired a generation to dream bigger. That original journey, sparked by a simple idea, captured lightning in a bottle with its raw spirit, sweeping landscapes, and the magic of two friends chasing the horizon on massive BMWs. Then came Long Way Down and Long Way Up. In their latest series, Long Way Home, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman trade the extremes for something refreshingly real—a ride from Scotland to England via the long way around. On vintage bikes, they wind their way through more than 15 countries, rediscovering the pure joy of the open road. It's not just a ride—it's the kind of ride we all dream of, and it certainly looks like Long Way Home will inspire the next wave of riders, just as Long Way Round once did.
“Hold on to your hats, folks, Chris Cabin likes this movie!” - Eric On this week's episode, we're going back to The Prequels on the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza to do a proper episode on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith! And, yeah, that Vader shout at the end of the movie is still one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments in all of Star Wars! PLUS: Palpatine blurs out his Zoom background when making secret calls from the toilet! #374 I Sure Love Motorcycling - Richard has nearly killed someone in his audience and has finally found a good reason for having kids. He's also potentially about to destroy the universe as his guest is Herring doppelgänger (even down to the number of testicles) Charley Boorman. He talks about what he got paid for appearing in Deliverance, hanging out with movie stars (past and future) as a kid, thanks to his amazing film director dad, giving Lee Marvin a lift, how planned family trip to Europe turned into the Long Way Round, how no one recognised Ewan McGregor on the set of Star Wars and the extraordinary story of how Charley got back on his bike after smashing himself to bits. New month, new theme! It's Cinco de Thoro, and the theme is The Spy Who Loved May. We know now that Gina Carano is a bad person, but she was sure fun to watch kick ass in 2011. Note from McFly: he waited all episode for Thor to bring up that Gina Carano and Ewan McGregor were both in the extended Star Wars Universe as bad ass characters that faught Mandalorians, but it never happened. Chibi hosts the Unidentified Flying Obsession podcast. The next spy topic is Three Days of the Condor (1975).
