Hillary saw a problem. Some of her patients in rural Louisiana just couldn’t afford their thickener, and had to choose between paying the electric bills, putting food on the table, or thickener. Sensation just as important as motor function, but often overlooked. Now there's no need to clutch your pearls or your cold laryngeal mirror, because Zach Smith is here to explain what you need to know about sensation. Have you found yourself writing that your patient "silently penetrated"? The recurrent laryngeal nerve triggers a cough, but not the superior laryngeal nerve. When we know more about how sensation works, it's easier to see that silent penetration isn't a thing. Wondering what the real difference is between palliative care and hospice? Or when a PEG is worth all the trouble we know they cause? One study found that 78% of SLPs thought that PEGs were OK in advanced dementia (they're not), but only 11% of those same SLPs said they would want one for themself.
