Pop-up retail has boomed post pandemic as vacancies have opened up in high streets and major shopping destinations across the country.Greater flexibility from landlords has meant that smaller brands who haven't yet ventured into the physical realm have had the chance to test the waters, big brands have been able to trial new locations and even non-retail brands have been able to exploit the marketing power of a temporary high street presence.London landlord Shaftesbury – whose 16-acre estate covers eclectic London neighbourhoods stretching across Seven Dials, parts of Covent Garden, Carnaby and Soho among others – has always championed pop-ups across its estate. As far back as 20 years ago it was introducing pop-ups to bring vibrancy, footfall and press opportunities to its London villages, and also to inspire longer-term tenants. In this special edition of our In Detail podcast, Lauretta Roberts Editor in Chief of TheIndustry.fashion - speaks to Shaftesbury's Emma Steele who heads up pop-up opportunities across its estate and also to three enterprising brands who have successfully popped-up on the estate (often more than once) to learn how the experience enhanced their business, including an ethical fashion start-up, a leading charity and one of the UK's best known music acts.Get breaking news as it happens and be the first to know when our podcasts go live by following:  INSTAGRAM  ***  LINKEDIN  ***  TWITTER  ***  FACEBOOKGet breaking news, big name interviews & insights delivered to your inbox daily HERE

When Larry and Barbara retired to the south of Western Australia they " thought" their days of research and development were behind them - that was until some large and noisy neighbours decided to drop in for a drink.  Since arriving at their home in Nullaki, Western Australia;  the 3 species of black cockatoos - which are all endangered - The Carnaby cockatoo/ngolyenok, Baudin's cockatoo/ngolak and the Forest retailed cockatoo/karrak - have made such an impression on Barbara and Larry that they have decided to dedicate their property to the preservation of the species and are inviting every day people to join them in the battle to halt the extinction of these magnificent birds. So was born the Nullaki Cockatoo Nursery. The Nursery is in the City of Albany within the Nullaki  natural wilderness, around 50km west from the regional town of Albany, Western Australia.  It is truly stunningly serene and has been placed under strict wilderness protection through a  conservation covenant by the City of Albany. The word Nullaki is a local indigenious word in noongar language meaning "narrow place of seaweed"  - making reference to the nearby inlet (later named Wilson's Inlet by the first european settlers).Within this Nullaki wilderness Barbara and Larry have listened to the noisy black cockatoos and set up artificial cockatoo nest tubes to compensate for the lack of available cockatoo sized nest sites. They have started with 20 for now and are offering other humans who are interested the ability to buy one of these nest tubes, to make it their own. They are selling these already installed nest tubes for $250AUD. The tube will become the property of the purchaser.  Barbara and Larry then voluntarily host the owner's cocky tube in a tree on their own property in the area where all the cockatoos are looking for suitable nest sites.  Barbara and Larry make no money from the sale of the cocky tubes, the $250 is what they paid to have the cocky tubes supplied and installed.  They volunatrily offer their time and offer their trees to the new owner's tube. They have also ensured that the tube's will always be protected and be able to stay ion the "cockatoo nursery" for the lifetime of the tube is written into Barbara's and Larry's land ownership, so that no matter what happens to them, the new owner/s will have to ensure the tube is always in the tree and at the disposal of the cockatoos to use - black cockatoos if they successfully fledge young will return to the same nest site for their lifetime - that way protecting the investor's purchase. On purchsing a tube Larry and Barbara mail you a hard copy of the cocky tube details and a information letter explaining all the ins and outs of the Nullaki Cockatoo Nursery cocky tube purchase.Realising that not every human has $250 to spend - Larry and Barbara are also offering an entry level rental for $50/breeding season.  This private model is something entirely novel to the conservation of the black cockatoo scene of Western Australia and is 100% sure to ruffle some feathers.Nullaki Cockatoo Nursery Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1716700181869100Email: barb.geno@activ8.net.auWill post Nullaki Cockatoo Nursery photos on Birdman Dad insta, reddit and Facebook pagesbirdman_dadhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1892441777643619

No music, no voices, just the sound of the forest waking up. This recording was made while traveling through Whadjuk Nyoongar land, WA. The birds differ between east and west Australia. That huge swathe of arid country in between has meant that birds have evolved into different sub-species, species and variants.  Listening notes from Ann Jones: 00:00:00 Normally I would cut out my footsteps walking away from the microphone, but this audio is too beautiful. You can hear carolling magpies, as well as black cockatoos. These are either Baudin's or Carnaby's or both. They sometimes do hang out together. Both are endangered species. 00:04:05 An Australian ringneck parrot. This is about the size of a rosella and with a wonderful green body, a black head and a yellow neck around the nape of its head. 00:04:20 A pee-wee or mudlark calling here. They vary slightly across the continent. 00:14:50 Ringnecks are sometimes called twenty-eights in WA because that is sort of what their call sounds like – ‘twenty-eight'. 00:21:44 Here there is a very, very high-pitched tinkling of a grey fantail, along with a magpie, an Australian raven and (we think) a grey shrike-thrush. Thanks to Tegan Douglas form Birdlife Australia who helped me with these sounds! 00:24:40 If you've got a particularly good sound system, you might be able to pick up the rhythmic moan of the bronzewing pigeon. 00:26:39 The Australian raven is calling in the background here. It's a big black bird with a funny beard that pops out, making its neck look really chunky. 00:28:20 Here comes a grey currawong with its chiming call echoing through the bushland. These are handsome, large birds. Maybe something that looks halfway between a magpie and a raven. Grey currawongs are mostly grey in different hues, but with white tips on the wings and tail. They walk and hop on the ground to forage for insects but are strong fliers and happily scale trees, ripping off bark to look for insects and raiding fruit trees. 00:43:00 Western gerygone (pronounced jerr-i-go-nee) is a sweet little hazel eyed greyish bird with an adorable little tail and a sweet little two note, three syllable call. They spend their lives inside bushes and within the branches of trees, frustrating bird watchers. They occasionally flutter out to catch an insect on the wind. They build a nest that hangs off a twig and is wrapped in spiders' web. 00:44:14 Probably a yellow-plumed honeyeater making those whistling calls with a red wattlebird making ‘chucks', along with Australian raven moans and common bronzewing droning on in the background. Thanks to Adrian Boyle, Tegan Douglas, Erika Roper and Nigel Jackett for helping ID some of the sounds. I had no hope.

It's been just over a year since retailers across the nation first re-opened their doors after an historic enforced lockdown that had lasted almost three months. Little did we know then that two more lockdowns were to come with devastating affects for some of fashion's biggest names. However with much of the UK's adult population vaccinated against COVID-19 and promises from the Government that it will not enforce another lockdown, retailers can now turn their minds from survival to revival.Today we are bringing you a special edition of our IN DETAIL podcast in partnership with landlord Shaftesbury.Shaftesbury – whose 16-acre estate covers eclectic London neighbourhoods stretching across Seven Dials, parts of Covent Garden, Carnaby and Soho among others – has always taken a curated approach to its retail line-up and has a strong track record of supporting independent brands and designers (in particular through its Start-up With Seven Dials initiative) , pioneering pop-up retail and encouraging experimentation with innovative new formats.Far from feeling tempted to veer from this approach during the pandemic, it has doubled down and supported many brands in the opening of, in some cases, their first retail store. In particular, it has seen strong demand from digital brands looking for cut-through with consumers as the online space gets more and more crowded, as well as companies taking previously online-only concepts, such as fashion rental, into the realm of the physical. One such brand to make the move is London menswear label L'Estrange, which having experimented with pop-ups throughout the Shaftesbury estate, made the plunge and took a permanent store in Seven Dials during the pandemic.Lauretta Roberts, editor in chief of TheIndustry.fashion, talks to L'Estrange co-founder Tom Horne and Shaftesbury retail director Samantha Bain-Mollison about how the landlord and brand worked together on making physical retail a success and why they feel that post-pandemic a new, reinvigorated retail landscape will emerge.

In this episode Richard Webster, Director of Tonks Removals, discusses how he became involved in the industry some 30 years ago, as a porter on the trucks straight after leaving school at the tender age of 15! We discover that Tonks Removals was formed by the Tonks family in Scarborough back in 1820 and today celebrates its 201st year in business. Tonks Removals was put up for sale in 1995 by then owner Nigel Tonks, and Richard (20) together with his brother James (22) purchased the business for the princely sum of £8,000, with the assets consisting of a Bedford truck, the goodwill, the equipment, and the storage, which had to be relocated from its existing old school depository. We discuss that there are no set roles within Tonks Removals for Richard or James, however James is more on the trucks while Richard is more office based, but they both like to get away on jobs when they can. We discover that the challenges Richard has had to overcome were the lack of money, as the industry is a high-cost industry but not a high margin one, and being taken seriously at such a young age, but the biggest challenge was learning how to run a business. We discuss that even though Richard cannot change anything from his past, however, if he could it would be to realise what the actual costs are to operate your business, know your costs and stop subsidising others who waltz off with the profit! We discover that Richard's high point of being in the industry in terms of the business was purchasing land to build their own facility in Carnaby, a mere 8 years ago, and as a person it is having the respect of others which he has earned and worked for. We discuss that Richard would change a few things within the industry but the main one being the public perception of our industry (again!), which has changed in recent months, but he can see it reverting in due course. And I raise the question of whether the general public's perception is that it's not seen as skilled labour (which of course it is!) and discuss this further with Richard. We discover that Richard uses demountable bodies (19 at the time of recording), as well as fixed bodied truck, but the demountable bodies offer the convenience of access issues, short term storage and cost implications for replacement of trucks. We discuss that the advice Richard would give to a younger self and it would be to know your costings and not to be afraid to market yourself at the better end of the market. We discover that in the next 5 years Richard sees the niche corporate moving in and out of Europe getting smaller and smaller with company mergers and acquisitions, plus the realisation that people can successfully work remotely, but he sees no change in the domestic moving industry. We discuss how imports and exports since Brexit has affected business and Richard states that it is getting easier as the guidance, systems and knowledge base improves, and it is better as a lot of movers have pulled out of the European market and therefore sees relocation prices rising. We discover that Tonks Removals are not members of the BAR, and Richard explains his reasons for this, but he and James have discussed applying once again. We discuss that outside of the industry Richard tends to sleep a lot! He has started doing a lot more walking with his wife, he is a keen motorsport fan due to his love for driving, and he is actively involved in the parish council. And as always we end Moving Matters with a couple of funny moving stories, a potentially X-rated one involving the client, the crew and a hot-tub, one involving Richard and an obnoxious customer, and a couple of short tales involving digging up a dead cat, and a terminally ill dog. Only one quarter of known Australian threatened species are protected in conservation reserves. Some threatened species are confined to small areas in cities, on farms and along roadsides. Engaging the broader community in conservation efforts is essential to their survival. In this episode we speak to 3 people who are beating the drum for threatened species and bringing the public along for the ride. Jodi Rowley really loves frogs. Working for the Australian Museum and the University of NSW she is the lead scientist behind the Frog ID APP. Australia has over 240 species of frog which are found nowhere else in the world, some species are flourishing but four have already become extinct. The FrogID APP is a national citizen science project, helping scientists learn more about what is happening to Australia's frogs. People are recording frog calls on their smartphone in their backyards, schools and farms. Download it and you can't help but start noticing frogs all around. www.frogid.net.au Matt Blomfield of Gather By provides an opportunity for Growers and farmers to diversify into the honey business without having to know anything about bees. Gather by looks for farmers with 5ha to grow Australian native Leptospermum plants plus bee- fodder plants, for the purpose of generating chemical free, raw bioactive, Manuka- type honeys for local and export markets, while prioritising bee and ecosystem health. Gather By advises the farmers on what to grow and how and then brings along the bees and collects the honey. www.gatherby.org/growers Darren Grover is the Head of Healthy Land and Seascapes Leading the Species, Oceans, Science and Impact teams at WWF-Australia. He has been working hard to improve the conservation status of species like the black-flanked rock-wallaby and Carnaby's black cockatoo in southwest Australia, the Bilby and Gouldian Finch in the Kimberley, southern right whales in the Great Australian Bight, and marine turtles on the Great Barrier Reef. His biggest challenge is inspiring other to care as much about wildlife. His greatest joy is all the volunteers who make a difference. www.wwf.org.au/what-we-do

Las canciones incluidas:"Pretty Green", The Jam"Lazy Sunday Afternoon", The Small Faces"Finding my way", Rush"Dedicate Follower of Fashion", The Kinks"Carnaby Street", The Jam"D'You Know What I Mean", Oasis"Wall Of Glass", Liam Gallagher See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The short billed white tailed black cockatoo aka Carnaby cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris) would have to be the most widely recognised and iconic large birds in Western Australia. The government (both State and federal) in collaboration with several non-government organisations such as BirdlifeWA, have invested time and taxpayers funds into trying to preserve this bird and with it, it's habitat. The Carnaby cockatoo has been in marked decline for many years and is listed as endangered. The decline in numbers being attributed primarily to habitat fragmentation, habitat destruction - in particular the loss of nesting sites - as the trees they nest in are often over 100 years old and competition from other native bird species for the available nest sites. The issue over suitable nest sites has been significant for many years and the problem is magnified by the fact that a suitable hollow for such a large cockatoo is often found in a tree over 100 years old; so planting a tree to day was hardly going to solve this particular problem. This particular issue has been investigated in recent years, again in collaboration with government, non-government and a university; from which the cocky tube was born. The cocky tube project was initially developed and marketed via LandCareSJ group and more information on this project can be found here:https://blackcockatoos.org.au/tag/artificial-nesting-boxes/Birdman Dad's cocky tubes were actually MK1 versions of the LandcareSJ tubes - this is why they look different to the tubes shown on this link. These 2 people were able to provide assistance when so many others were not able, or willing. It is thanks to them there is a new generation flying in the skies in 2021.If you have a suitable Carnaby nest site, or even a black cockatoo nest site, the cocky tube may offer the birds in your neighbourhood a substitute nest where there are no old growth trees. Tegan Douglas is a bird researcher, proud Bird Nerd and the Citizen Science Project Co-Ordinator at Birdlife Australia's Western Australia office. In this episode we talk about many of Western Australia's endangered birds, Carnaby's Black Cockatoo, Western Ground Parrot, Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Bristlebird and the efforts to secure the populations. Tegan tells me about her earlier fieldwork with the Red-browed Treecreeper, and why she loves Australian Babblers. In a wide-ranging (and fun) conversation we discuss many conservation strategies, modern urban landscapes, the largest area of natural woodland on the planet and the Western Australian landscape feature that is visible from space! Las canciones incluidas:“Pretty Green”, The Jam"Lazy Sunday Afternoon", The Small Faces"Finding my way", Rush"Dedicate Follower of Fashion", The Kinks“Carnaby Street”, The Jam"D'You Know What I Mean", Oasis"Wall Of Glass", Liam Gallagher

We’re talking about extinction, climate change, urban development and urban planning futures. Dr Donna Houston says urban planners need to be more attuned to the ecological realities and rhythms of our cities. From switching on a light, recycling a plastic bottle, shopping at the local supermarket, to asking a smartphone for directions, everyday life in cities is a key contributor to processes co-producing the Anthropocene, a potential new volatile geological era marked by the activity of humans. Activities core to urban life and the functioning of cities are exacerbating planetary changes across key terrestrial, atmospheric and aquatic thresholds, including: land cover change, ocean acidification, a warming in the average temperature of the planet; the six great mass species extinction, pollution and environmental degradation. These changes in biophysical worlds are acutely felt in social worlds, though they are experienced unevenly and disproportionately affect precarious and vulnerable human and nonhuman populations. Rarely, however, do we investigate the entanglements and dependencies of urban life and the Anthropocene. “The longer view, but also the responsibility. So cosmo-ecological is also to put one self into obligation or responsibility; in a way that… Western euro-centric or anthropocentric practices don’t do”. Dr Donna Houston This involves understanding what the choices and consequences that are bound up in these entanglements and dependencies mean for urban planners, designers, citizens and activists. It also involves understanding what they mean for the multitudes of earthly life dwelling within and beyond urban boundaries. The bio-cultural diversity of life on a planet of cities is complex and it doesn’t look the same everywhere. We are situated on a precarious threshold where forms of urban development matter profoundly for planetary futures. We need new ways of thinking about the city that are capable of connecting the unique social, historical and ecological dimensions of urban places with planetary changes. “… to understand that the ecological and cultural processes that are entangled within our relations are really important to our survival. In fact, we won’t really survive if we don’t attend to them”. Dr Donna Houston One way forward is to consider new problems for urban research: such as that of what our colleague at the University of Sydney, Thom van Dooren, refers to as the cultural and biological entanglements of extinction. Extinction stories offer a window into relationships between localised and mass extinction and help us in understanding what specific humans and nonhumans within particular cities are doing. In Perth Australia, an interesting story is unfolding involving endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoos, their people, plants and places and how considering black cockatoos in urban contexts highlights present incongruences between planning, time, and ecologies as well as new possibilities for thinking about how we can plan ‘multispecies’ cities. As urbanists, we need to imagine a different type of future to better plan for multispecies cities. Part of the answer might be to decentre the human from our discussion of cities and urban planning more specifically. Donna’s powerful and unnerving research starts with ecological time, which is important for understanding the way we plan, design and build cities. Donna ends by talking about the role of cosmo-ecological and Indigenous methodologies in urban planning. Guest Dr Donna Houston is an urban and cultural geographer in the Department of Geography and Planning at Macquarie University. Her research explores the intersections of urban political ecology and environmental justice in the Anthropocene; the biopolitics of climate change; toxic landscapes and bodies; and planning in the ‘more-than-human’ city. Dr Houston is the Director of the Bachelor of Planning and the Co-Director of the Faculty of Arts Environmental Humanities research stream.
