It’s hot and everyone’s slightly unhinged, so what better time to kick off the Mamamia Out Loud Summer Book Club than with the only novel bold enough to ask: What if you left your family for a road trip and reinvented yourself... in a motel off the freeway? In the first of our Summer Book Club episodes, Em, Jessie and Holly dive into Miranda July’s All Fours, a book that is part midlife crisis, part erotic fever dream and part existential stand-up comedy routine. Em, Jessie and Holly discuss female desire, boredom, creativity and how it’s somehow both deeply relatable and utterly chaotic to want to start afresh on a whim. If you’ve ever: Sat in your car for an five extra minutes just to avoid your family Fantasised about a new life in a different country Or simply wondered, 'What if?' Then yes, this episode of Summer Book Club is for you.Summer Book Club Episode 2 drops December 28 when we'll be discussing the Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry. **Winactie!!**Verder bespreken we een heel gaaf boek: Power to the Pleasers van Inger Strietman. Dr. Richard Boyatzis, joins Dr. Bradley Block to unpack why even accomplished physicians often lose their sense of meaning mid-career. Drawing from his Intentional Change Theory, Dr. Boyatzis explains that fulfillment dips every 7–10 years as part of our natural life cycle — what he calls liminality, the space between “what was” and “what's next.” The fix isn't distraction (real estate, side gigs, or skydiving), but rediscovering your vision — your “ideal self” — and aligning daily work with your true values. He warns against the trap of coaching for compliance — trying to fix patients (or yourself) through fear and goals. Instead, focus on coaching with compassion — inspiring sustained change through purpose, gratitude, and hope. Physicians, he says, thrive when they reconnect to why they entered medicine: to help, heal, and matter. Through personal stories, neuroscience, and humor, Dr. Boyatzis offers a practical roadmap for reigniting passion without abandoning your profession — whether that means teaching, mentoring, volunteering, or simply reframing success through renewed purpose.Three Actionable Takeaways:Revisit Your Vision Every 7–10 Years: Midlife restlessness isn't failure — it's biology. Reflect on your ideal self by asking, “If my life were fantastic 10–15 years from now, what would it look like?” Write it down, talk it out, and use it to guide new choices in work and life.Coach (and Care) with Compassion, Not Compliance: Patients — and physicians — change through hope, not fear. Replace “If you don't…” warnings with vision-driven goals (“What do you want to live for?”). Shared purpose boosts motivation, treatment adherence, and well-being.Recharge with Purposeful Connection: Gratitude and positive storytelling aren't fluff — they activate the parasympathetic system and restore energy. Start meetings or days with one uplifting story, or jot three things you're grateful for. It rewires stress into meaning. About the Show:Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. „Back to the roots." Neue Ausrichtung. Ich brenne. I am on fire. Wenn man brennt, entsteht Energie. Routine dagegen raubt Energie. Frag dich selbst: Wo geht deine Reise hin? Was war sehr gut? Was war überragend? Was hast du vor? Was willst du bewegen? Immer. Liebe Grüße an alle. What if midlife wasn't the beginning of decline, but a second chance to feel alive again? In this episode, my guest is Louis Bezich, men's health advocate, and author of Saving Men from Themselves. After years of juggling leadership, divorce, and single parenthood, Louis discovered that taking care of himself wasn't selfish - it was survival.Louis shares how purpose, relationships, and everyday rituals can transform men's health, longevity, and happiness. He speaks honestly about the lies we tell ourselves (“I'm fine”), the habits that hold us back, and the simple mindset shift that can reignite motivation, no matter how stuck or tired you feel. You'll hear about:How to turn life's setbacks, such as divorce, stress, and even loneliness, into fuel for growth. Why men's health isn't just about diet or exercise, but meaning and connection. The “provider and protector” myth that keeps so many of us from looking after ourselves. How brotherhood and belonging can literally help you live longer. Why it's never too late to start living healthy and feeling good again. This isn't a pep talk; it's a practical, heartfelt reminder that you still have time to become the man you want to be.Why You Should ListenBecause most of us know we should look after ourselves, we just don't know where to start, or how to stay motivated when life feels like one long list of responsibilities. Louis strips away the noise and shows that better health and connection aren't about perfection; they're about purpose, small routines, and remembering that others depend on us too.If you want to find out more about Louis and his work visit his website: https://louisbezich.com/. His book, “Saving Men from Themselves: 20 Proven Tactics With a New Approach to Living Healthy for Men Over 50,” is available to buy on Bookbay and through other online retailers.
Today on Karl and Crew, we had Alex Nsengimana join us to share with us about Operation Christmas Child, a ministry through Samaritan’s Purse that provides children with simple shoebox gifts and the love of Christ. He also shared how the ministry impacted his life as a child while he was in an orphanage after escaping a gunman and losing his family. Alex currently serves with Operation Christmas Child, paying forward the hope and love he received through a shoebox gift. We also turned to the phone lines and texts to ask our listeners the question, “What have you discovered about the character of God that you didn’t get at first, but now you understand?” Then we had Drew Dyck join us to discuss how to navigate a midlife crisis in the context of faith. Drew is an acquisitions editor with Moody Publishers and a contributing editor for Christianity Today for Pastors. He has also authored several books, including “Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science.” You can listen to the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Husband Help Haven Podcast: Marriage Advice for Men Facing Separation, Affair or Divorce
You've been told "midlife crisis" means your marriage is doomed. Not true. In this episode, we break down what's really happening (identity crisis + FOMO) and how to respond in a way that actually helps—without chasing, lecturing, or pressure. WHAT THIS COVERS What a midlife crisis really is: an identity crisis where one role feels good (work, friends, gym) and others feel punishing (wife, mom) Why she skews toward the one rewarding identity and away from the rest The "FOMO" driver: "There's something I can only get outside the marriage" Escapism loops and why there's lots of talk but slow follow-through Your role: guide and endure—not fix TWO QUESTIONS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING Identity: How can you support a positive view of who she is inside the marriage (wife, mom, family)? Make those roles feel rewarding again and show the real return on her sacrifices. Possibility: How can you support a vision of marriage that includes healthy versions of what she wants outside it (freedom, independence, novelty, meaning)? ENDURING THE IN-BETWEEN Expect one step forward, two steps back. Use the "walkabout" mindset: keep home base safe and positive for the moments she circles back, and quietly embody your answers to the two questions above. NEXT STEPS Episode notes, quotes, and overview: episode overview Want support while you walk this out? The invisible woman still leaves quite a gap when she disappears. You might not have seen her smoothing your path this morning, ensuring clean clothes, full bellies, and petrol in cars. She paid bills, kept WiFi flowing, Netflix streaming, remembered gym renewals and doctor's appointments—putting herself last on every list. Until she doesn't. When the invisible woman packs her bags and buggers right off, suddenly her space becomes blindingly clear. Meet Monique van Tulder—mum, wife, woman who forgot to live her life. She took a grown-up gap year, went to change lightbulbs, and didn't return for months. Her sons call it "the time mum got mad and took off." She calls it life-changing—saving her marriage by renegotiating it entirely. You can find Monique's book A Grown Up's Gap Year here and her podcast here.
