There's a difference between surviving the turbulence of life and doing the internal work of transition. Rachel Lobdell is a journalist, mother, and nonprofit executive, approaching 40 with a generational lens on what midlife really looks like for millennials. She makes the case that her generation has been in continuous transition since adulthood began, which may be why their forties feel less like crisis and more like relief. We talk about the inherited blueprint and what happens when it stops fitting, the question of where identity actually lives, and why the hardest work of midlife might be sorting out what you've genuinely worked through from what you've just outrun.Guest Bio Rachel Lobdell is the executive director of News Creator Corps, a nonprofit focused on fighting misinformation. She has nearly two decades of media experience focused on digital transformation, innovation, and audience growth at some of the country's largest publishers including USA Today, Fortune, VICE, the Wall Street Journal, and a series of local newspapers. Born and raised in the Midwest, she has Masters and Bachelors degrees from the Missouri School of Journalism. She now resides in Brooklyn with her husband and son.Turning 40 and rethinking the Millennial midlife crisisThis week on The Big Four Oh Podcast, host Stephanie McLaughlin sits down with Rachel Lobdell, who shares her candid journey through the unpredictable terrain of early midlife. Rachel opens up about the messy, beautiful process of redefining success, balancing multiple identities, and finding peace amid the chaos of millennial adulthood. As she approaches her 40th birthday, Rachel reflects on career pivots, delayed milestones, and the ongoing quest to build a life on her own terms.Episode Highlights:Rachel's early days in journalism, the influence of a pivotal mentor, and her leap into founding the News Creator Core nonprofit. How parenthood reshaped her views on community, information, and the value of trusted networks. The unique turbulence millennials face, economic instability, delayed homeownership, and constant career transitions, and how these challenges fuel self-reflection and adaptation. The generational shift from chasing excitement at midlife to seeking inner peace and stability.Navigating parenting later in life, the new realities of the sandwich generation, and evolving family dynamics.Letting go of inherited blueprints and building a more authentic, realistic life that aligns with personal values.Rachel and Stephanie dive deep into the uniquely millennial experience of adulthood, exploring how constant change prompts introspection and a reimagining of what it means to thrive at midlife. Rachel's story is a great reminder that resilience, intentionality, and meaning can be found in both personal and professional reinvention. If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to rate, follow, and share The Big Four Oh Podcast.Guest ResourcesConnect with Rachel on InstagramAre you stuck in people-pleasing mode?Download Stephanie's People Pleasing Playbook to understand where it comes from, how it's showing up, and what it's costing you. www.thebigfouroh.com/peoplepleaserConnectTheBigFourOh.comTBFO on InstagramTBFO on FacebookGet the Email DigestListen, Rate & SubscribeYouTube PodcastsApple Podcasts SpotifyAmazon PodcastsSponsorThe Big Four Oh Podcast is produced and presented by Savoir Faire Marketing/Communications

In this episode, I'm joined by Ryan McGuigan, whose life, from the outside, looked like a success. He had built a thriving business from scratch, was engaged to be married, enjoyed financial stability, and seemed to be living the life many men aspire to. But beneath the surface, something felt wrong. As the physical demands of his work took their toll and cracks began to appear in his relationship, Ryan found himself facing a reality he hadn't expected. Within a short space of time, his engagement ended, he moved into a shared house just months before turning 40, and the identity he had spent years building began to unravel. In this honest and thought-provoking conversation, Ryan shares the shame, anxiety and loss of identity that followed, how he struggled with the gap between how his life looked and how it actually felt, and the surprising discovery that helped him rebuild his confidence and sense of purpose. We explore what happens when the roles, relationships and achievements we rely on for our self-worth disappear and why many men find themselves questioning everything in midlife. In this episode we discuss:Why success on paper doesn't always lead to fulfilmentThe hidden impact of identity loss after relationship breakdownHow shame and fear can keep men stuckWhy many men struggle when life doesn't go to planThe difference between external success and internal self-worthHow guided meditation helped Ryan reconnect with what really matteredWhat he learned about purpose, confidence and starting againWhy it is never too late to redesign your lifeIf you want to find out more about Ryan and listen to a free 30-minute meditation, visit his website: https://ryanpaulmcguigan.com/.

Send me a messageHave you ever felt the overwhelming urge to leave it all behind — your job, your marriage, your city? We often think happiness is just one move away, but what if the "prison" isn't the place you're in, but the patterns of your own mind?In this deep reflection, Todd Perelmuter explores the "sadness illusion": the belief that changing our external circumstances will fix our internal struggles. Wells is in full midlife crisis mode: A new espresso era, a power washer obsession and a big purchase he's a little embarrassed to talk about. But the show must go on... So Brandi shares all the behind-the-scenes from Miley's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony (Donatella Versace and the vintage Atelier Versace gown, Anya Taylor-Joy's speech, but no Spencer Pratt?). Plus, she unveils the truth about the headline breaking the internet about “Miley's husband.” Also on the docket: Brandi should go on The Traitors, men who read fiction are a green flag, and don't tell Matt about the salmon jizz. Plus, a potato masher from Amazon that is causing some confusion and MTV shows that should make a comeback. Date My Mom? Gold. Oh, and Wells needs to die with $500 in his bank account so he can leave his loved ones confused at his funeral. Classic Wells.
Michael Clinton is the former president and publishing director of Hearst Magazines and is currently special media advisor to the Hearst Corporation's CEO. If you don't know which magazines Hearst owns, here are a few: Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Country Living, Women's Health, Men's Health, Popular Mechanics, Car and Driver, and O, The Oprah Magazine. Michael is also a regular columnist for Men's Health, and his work has been featured in Forbes, Oprah Daily, Esquire, Elle, and on CBS Mornings. Michael has traveled through over a hundred countries, has run marathons on seven continents, is a private pilot, part owner of a vineyard in Argentina, has started a nonprofit foundation, holds two master's degrees, and still has a long list of life experiences that he plans to tackle. He is also the author of the book, Longevity Nation. Michael currently resides in New York and Santa Fe, New Mexico. In this episode we discuss the following: Movement is medicine. Not the pharmacy kind, but the kind we build into our life, day after day, year after year. Longevity isn't something reserved for the genetically lucky, but rather a choice we can make. And given that people are living longer than ever, it has never been more important to take care of ourselves. It's never too late to start getting healthy. Michael takes inspiration from 100 year old marathon runner who started running in his 80s. We can avoid the midlife crisis by recognizing it as an opportunity. If we're going to live longer, then we're not winding down… we're just getting to halftime. And that means there's still time to rebuild, improve, and re-invest in a better version of ourselves.
"Mid-Life Crisis or Spiritual Awakening?" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha on the topic of saṁvega ...the spiritual urgency that arises when we begin to clearly see aging, impermanence, mortality, and the unsatisfying nature of trying to build lasting happiness from changing conditions. What we often call a “mid-life crisis” may sometimes actually be the moment the story we've been living inside of stops fully working…forcing us to ask deeper questions about meaning, identity, fulfillment, and what truly leads to peace. This talk explores the Buddha's teachings on disillusionment, awakening, craving, identity, and how moments of existential discomfort can become doorways into wisdom rather than panic or reinvention.https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com

You've still got time." it was a tectonic shift. Nate had spent decades reverse-engineering a world-class life for his son. From humble beginnings, to international soccer and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon only to realize he had neglected his own Identity Equity. In this high-authority conversation, Nate Turner, creator of The Life Template, joins Jay Ramsden to discuss why "letting kids be kids" is a myth and how parents can move from being the "Manager" to becoming a "Renowned Global Intellectual" in their own right. If you've ever felt like your best years were spent building someone else's foundation, this episode is your blueprint for a strategic second-half pivot.Episode Highlights:The Myth of "Kids Being Kids": Why we are actually raising adults and why every parent needs a "Human Engineering" mindset.Reverse-Design Success: How Nate used a Harvard application as a roadmap to build global competence and humanitarian drive in his son from birth. The 10:00 p.m. Reality Check: Nate shares the vulnerable moment in a Best Buy parking lot when he realized he had no dreams of his own and how he started journaling them into existence. The Life Template Framework: A deep dive into Nate's three pillars: Intellectual Ambition, Global Competence, and Humanitarian Drive. The "Who" Audit: Understanding the three dimensions of who you are and why the only person who defines your success as a parent is the child you raised.Key Takeaways:The North Star: Why you cannot find your "Next" without a GPS destination in mind.Static vs. Dynamic Humanity: Proof that you are not the same person you saw in the mirror yesterday.Backward Design for Empty Nesters: How to apply Nate's engineering principles to your own "Empty Nest Life" to lead the planet better than you found it.Support the showSUPPORT THE MISSION: If this episode provided strategic value, please Follow and Save the show on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. In this lively and inspiring episode, I'm joined by author and speaker Wendy Valentine to explore what really lies on the other side of a so-called midlife crisis.Wendy shares her powerful story of breakdown and breakthrough—navigating divorce, financial strain, health challenges, grief, and anxiety—and how it ultimately became the catalyst for a complete life transformation. Rather than seeing midlife as something to endure, she reframes it as an awakening: a chance to reconnect with who you truly are and what you deeply want.We talk about the courage to take bold, imperfect action, the importance of ending self-abandonment, and how learning to trust your inner “yes” and “no” can guide you toward a more aligned and fulfilling life. Wendy also shares the mindset shifts and practices that helped her rebuild—from following an unexpected dream to embracing growth through life's most difficult moments. This conversation is a reminder that it's never too late to begin again—and that what feels like everything falling apart may actually be the beginning of something far more true.In this episode, Wendy discusses:Midlife Crisis ReframedBreakdown to BreakthroughRV Vision and LeapSelf Abandonment InsightBecoming the Future YouFeel Your Way ForwardEnergy Trust and HarmonyStruggle as InitiationRegret Stepping Into Your LightEmbracing the Dark SideTaking RisksLife Buffet, No RegretsFreedom and Yes FrameworkWhy She Wrote the BookBecome Your Own Best FriendRewriting the Inner TickerHospital Scare Mindset ResetLotus Flower ExerciseQuiet Nature WisdomCrisis to Teacher PathGratitude on the Other SideBuddha Castle and SufferingFilling Your Courage JarMidlife Makeover OfferingsVisit Wendy Valentine's website________NEW PODCAST! Many millennials either are already in their 40s or are staring them down. How does that all shape what millennial midlife crises are starting to look like?Brittany finds out with Vox senior correspondent Alex Abad-Santos, who recently wrote an article about the millennial midlife crisis, and Sara Srygley, research associate at the Population Reference Bureau. This episode originally aired on June 20, 2025.For more episodes about the forces shaping Millennials' lives, check out:You're not broken - the job market is.Enough is enough. It's waaayyyyy too common for therapists to feel confused and frustrated with their model. Many counselors feel like their models work for some but feel hopeless with certain clients. Worst of all is when therapists feel like a "rent-a-friend" instead of a catalyst for change. I'm Dr. Jordan Harris, and I help therapists move from "lost" to "confident" by mastering the meta-skills of clinical excellence. My approach isn't about learning another model—it's about knowing when and how to use the tools you already have to create deeper, more transformative emotional encounters. In my trainings, we focus on four key pillars: Motivation: Working with (not against) client resistance. Persuasion: Engaging clients so they show up hopeful and ready. Experiencing: Moving past surface-level talk into deep emotional work. Body Language: Reading non-verbal cues for true clinical attunement.

What she once viewed as a crisis, she now reframes as a “midlife awakening”—a call to reconnect with her authentic self and create a more meaningful life.Together, Katie and Wendy explore the idea that many women are not experiencing a midlife crisis, but rather a “midlife coma”—a state of disconnection from purpose, passion, and identity. This episode dives into what it really takes to wake up in midlife, including the courage to make different choices, the willingness to embrace uncertainty, and the ability to trust yourself even when the path is unclear. You'll hear:How Wendy moved from burnout, depression, and self-doubt to purpose and freedomThe difference between familiar discomfort and “scary freedom”Why midlife is the perfect time for reinvention and self-discoveryHow to move through fear, perfectionism, and overthinkingThe concept of the “middle suck” and why so many women stay stuck thereHow to recognize your inner voice and follow intuitive nudgesSimple practices like meditation, journaling, and rest that support clarity and connectionWendy also shares her transformational decision to leave her corporate career, travel across the country in an RV, and ultimately build a life aligned with her purpose—reminding listeners that meaningful change begins with a single decision. This episode is especially relevant for women who feel:stuck or unfulfilled in midlifedisconnected from their purposeafraid to make a big life changecaught between comfort and growthready for something more but unsure where to beginAt its core, this conversation is an invitation to remember your strength, trust your inner wisdom, and give yourself permission to create a life that feels aligned, expansive, and true.
The Slowdown is taking a week to return to some of our favorite episodes from Maggie's tenure so far. Today's poem is Midlife Crisis by Jane Zwart. We'll be back on Monday, March 30 with new episodes. Today's episode was originally released on January 7, 2026. In this episode, Maggie writes… “Midlife has upended everything I thought about aging. It's not at all what I expected. Certainly, when I was a child, I thought of people in their forties as old, and now that I'm closer to 50 than 40, I laugh at that. I feel … young! I feel younger, in many ways, than I did ten years ago.”Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp
