Patrick McKenzie (patio11) explains the standard procedure for large withdrawals in bank branches, with particular focus on the viral story published in The Cut about a woman who withdrew $50,000 cash from a bank and handed it to scammers. Certain minor details in the article set off a year-long investigation where he identified the exact physical location of the bank branch in question, researched the context for the transaction using public records, and obtained new details through FOIA requests. His investigation reveals an underlying narrative that accounts for what actually happened, and provides a worked example for fact-checking in journalism. –Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/two-americas-one-50k-withdrawal/–Sponsors:  Safebase Ready to save time and close deals faster? For sixteen years, his undead reign brought terror to the living and torment to his widow. But when the villagers finally rose against him, they unearthed a horror beyond imagination. (Jure Grando: The First Vampire) *** For nearly a millennium, a monstrous black dog with eyes like burning coals has stalked the foggy coastlines and ancient churches of East Anglia, leaving death and terror in its silent wake. From its first recorded appearance in 1127 where it led a spectral hunting party through Peterborough, to its most infamous attack in 1577 when it allegedly killed four churchgoers, the creature known as Black Shuck has become far more than just another ghost story. Through centuries of sightings and evolving folklore, this massive demon hound has transformed from a Viking guardian spirit into one of Britain's most enduring legends - one that some locals insist still prowls the shadows of Norfolk and Suffolk to this day. (Black Shuck: East Anglia's Demon Hound) *** In 1857 London, the Bacon family's home became the center of supernatural chaos when mysterious sounds and flying objects drew crowds of over a thousand spectators to their modest Bermondsey residence. But when thirteen-year-old Caroline confessed to creating the ghostly disturbances using strands of hair to topple objects, her deception was revealed as an act of rebellion against her father and new stepmother. This tale of a fake haunting offers a poignant glimpse into Victorian family dynamics and the desperate measures one girl took to assert her independence. (The Bermondsey Poltergeist) *** In October 1975, what began as a late-night drive for two young men in rural Maine turned into an encounter that would haunt them forever. David Stephens had no memory of being taken aboard a massive UFO by mushroom-headed beings until months later, when hypnosis sessions revealed the terrifying truth about the hours he lost that night – an experience so profound that it would drive his friend Glen to flee the state and change both their lives forever. (Night of the Mushroom Men) *** Could the Moon's perfect positioning—exactly 400 times smaller than the Sun and precisely placed for total eclipses—be more than cosmic coincidence? Authors Christopher Knight and Alan Butler propose a mind-bending theory: that future humans (or their advanced robots) traveled back in time 4.6 billion years to construct the Moon, creating the exact conditions needed for life on Earth to emerge. Their provocative hypothesis suggests we might be caught in an infinite loop, with humanity traveling to the past to ensure its own creation, much like the ancient symbol of Ouroboros—a snake eternally consuming its own tail. Team Hope is launching its annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal, to support communities in Africa and Eastern Europe this winter. Since 2010, the campaign has delivered over 2.5 million shoeboxes packed with essential items, toys, and school supplies—often the only gift these children receive all year. This year, Team Hope aims to send as many shoeboxes as possible to children in countries like Romania, Ukraine, and Malawi. To tell us more about the appeal, Alan Morrissey was joined by the Christmas Shoebox Appeal Manager from Team Hope, Theresa Wood. Photo (c): https://www.teamhope.ie/christmas-shoebox-appeal/

Host Bob Traynor continues his conversation with Renee Lefrancois, Director of Audiology at Shoebox, on the vital role of ototoxicity monitoring. Renee explains the different types of ototoxicity, including cochleotoxicity, vestibulotoxicity, and neurotoxicity, and how early signs like hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance issues can indicate ototoxic damage. The conversation emphasizes the global need for ototoxicity monitoring, particularly in areas with limited access to audiology services, where diseases like tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis are prevalent. Renee shares real-world case studies, such as the use of Shoebox's technology for monitoring patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and Meniere's disease. These examples highlight how accessible tools are making a difference for both patients and clinicians, especially in remote locations. With advancements like noise monitoring during hearing tests, remote audiometry has become more accurate and practical, breaking down barriers for patients unable to attend regular appointments. The conversation concludes by looking toward the future of ototoxicity monitoring, with technology playing a growing role in clinical practice and collaboration across healthcare professionals becoming increasingly essential. **Learn more about Shoebox here: https://www.shoebox.md Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest episodes each week, and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter): https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearing/ https://twitter.com/WeekinHearing

Sad Boys For Reall! Chicago artist, Shoebox Baby, slides to PVTSTCK to discuss growing up in O'Block, how his early success impacted his mindset, and learning how to cope with the loss of those closest to him. In the song, “Recovery Mode” by FEMDOT he says, “So what you when you look in my eyes? / All the trauma I hide / All the hurt I disguise / So what you see when you think about our lives? / And all the times that I've tried and feel guilty that we alive.” This concept has followed Shoebox as he's become the man he is today. Dealing with the repercussions of “survivor's guilt” & the idea that it could've been him. Box has been shaped by the home he's known his whole life. For better & for worse. Living with the traumas that have been instilled, but using those as motivation for his next chapter. Also discussed, "Make O'Block Great Again," memories with King Von, influence that Chief Keef had on the community, appearing on No Jumper & On The Radar.

On this week's show, the panel begins by dissecting Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the episodic remake of Brangelina's 2005 espionage film. The Prime Video series stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular Smiths, spies who become “married” as a part of the job, and explores partnership in the gig economy in a quieter, smaller, and less glamorous version of the original. Then, they review The Color Purple, a movie-musical adapted from Alice Walker's seminal novel. The film stars Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson, as well as Danielle Brooks, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sofia. Finally, it's the viral scam that rocked the internet: “The Day I Put $50,000 in a Shoe Box and Handed It to a Stranger” is a first-hand account written by The Cut's financial-advice columnist, Charlotte Cowles, about the time she fell for an Amazon scam call. Our panel reviews the piece and explores its ethics.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Julia discusses her big life changes, including a new fellowship at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.  Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: “Pull Me Out” by Mike Stringer Endorsements: Dana: Dance Life on Prime Video, a five-episode series that follows the students at Brent Street Academy, the southern hemisphere's most prestigious dance academy.  Julia: The Hobonichi Techo Planner Book, a planner that's descended from the heavens.
