Kenny and Mike are joined by friend and regular guest Rev. Eric Folkerth to discuss the biopic film of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unkown. Directed by James Mangold, the film stars Timothee Chalamet as Dylan, Ed Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, and Monica Babaro as Joan Baez. Based on the book Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Wood, A Complete Unknown opens as Bob Dylan arrives in New York City and begins his rise in the world of folk music, and the reaction after he became a folk music star when he decides to expand into folk rock music by "going electric." This new direction was introduced and decidedly rejected by the audience at the 1965 Newport Folk Music Festival, and is the climax of the film. As the film moves toward the Newport clash, it documents Dylan's struggle againstbeing labeled, boxed in, and controlled by the music industry as well as his initial fans. Declaring and accepting purity of worship is a means to control the experience, theological understanding, and faith development of others. Luke 4 and the resistance to Jesus demonstrating God's love of and working for other people and nations. The early Church in the Book of Acts also faced this struggle of expansive experiences of worship and understanding of God.

Christians have been notorious for fighting over styles of worship. Contemporary or traditional? Seeker sensitive or confessional? High church or low church? While the labels may have changed, the debates about worship have existed for centuries. How tragic that the worship of God, which should lead to unity, often becomes a source of division. Cain's jealousy began when God accepted Abel's offering, but not Cain's. The reason was likely the attitude with which it was offered. Abel brought his best “fat portions from some of the firstborn of the flock” (v. 4). Cain brought merely “some of the fruits of the soil” (v. 3). God's rejection led Cain to be frustrated and angry (v. 5). Cain's anger could have led him to repentance. God counseled Cain, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door” (v. 7). Sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve and was now an active force in all relationships. Instead of listening to God's counsel, Cain killed his brother (v. 8). It is easy to lash out at others instead of addressing our own sin. But Cain's sin did not go unnoticed by God. God declared, “Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground” (v. 10). Sin impacted Cain's relationship with God, his family, and the earth itself (v. 12). God's response demonstrated both a concern for justice and grace. He put Cain under a curse and exiled him (vv. 11–12). But He also provided protection (v. 15). This chapter vividly illustrates the plight humanity faces because of sin. It also illustrates God's commitment to bring redemption. In the latter decades of the 20th century, many churches across the country shifted from a formal style of worship, with traditional and classical music, to a more informal style of worship, with praise choruses and rock-influenced instrumentation. These changes in worship didn't happen without conflict. In the 1980's and 1990's, controversies became so heated in some churches that some observers began calling them “The Worship Wars.” Today, we may be well past the worst of the worship wars, but we're never going to be in a season where discussions over what we do as gathered members of the body of Christ go away. Our society today shows a constant battle between one side and another. It has its roots beyond culturedeep within the human condition. Once we understand that, then we are open to the solution the Bible presents.

Deep within all of us, there is a longing for the garden that is now closed to us. The only way back to God is through the cross, through Christ. We need to stay on the path of the gospel, the Bible, and the cross and find our way back to God.
