Gambling has been on the rise in recent years, and now more than ever, it's seeping its way into our everyday lives. From advertisements on our phones to the big screens, the gambling industry is fighting for our attention. But why is this such a problem? This industry preys on the weak and vulnerable, and profits off of those too addicted to turn away. The Bible helps us think about gambling with wisdom and discernment. For example, Matthew 6:24-34 commands us to steward our resources well and to trust God for our provision. In addition, Southern Baptists have opposed gambling for many years, with over 14 resolutions about gambling adopted by messengers. While the problem of gambling is pervasive in many states, South Carolina and Texas are currently faced with legislation that, if passed, would legalize sports betting, leading to physical, emotional, and relational harm, particularly within families and communities. Here to discuss the dangers of this issue is Bryant Simms, chief operations officer for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, who will offer advice to pastors on how to oppose this issue in their state. You'll also hear from Dan Darling, director of the Land Center for Cultural Engagement at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and church engagement strategist at the ERLC.

Fame and celebrity have many downsides. But Daniel Darling brings a balanced approach to this subject by reminding us that fame is also what allows a good message to get through the clutter. In this episode, Karl talks with Dan about a Twitter thread Dan wrote expressing appreciation for the fame of Tim Keller. It was Tim Keller's platform and the celebrity status it gave him that allowed Dan and so many others to be introduced to Keller's teachings. Dan's perspective on the value of having a platform is an important balance to our conversations about the dangers of celebrity. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." But push beyond those iconic words, and sometimes the details get a little hazy. And strange. God walked around in a garden? Eve was made from Adam's rib? A talking serpent? And what the in the world were the "Nephilim?" Kyle Worley is joined by Dan Darling to discuss his new book, “Agents of Grace.”Questions Covered in This Episode:Why did you write this book?Is it divisive to stand firm in Christian truth and doctrine? What is theological triage and how it can be helpful? Is the division we are seeing in our churches based on social, cultural, and political perspectives? How do we prevent the calls for unity to not turn into compromise or uniformity? What is one reason people should read this book?Helpful Definitions:Theological Triage: Ranking and prioritizing what issues and doctrines we cannot budge from and what can we disagree on. First Tier: Christian orthodoxy we cannot depart from; i.e. the trinity, the deity of Christ, etc.Second Tier: Things Christians have disagreed on; i.e. baptism and egalitarianism, etc. This tends to be how denominations are formed.Third Tier: Things that people in the same body of local believers may disagree on; i.e. the age of the earth, the timeline of Christ's return, educating our kids, etc.Guest Bio:Daniel Darling is an author, pastor, and Christian leader. One of the most common throwbacks at the faces of Christians who call out sin is to say, "Hey, you're not supposed to judge." But guess what: that's a bit of a skewing of biblical truths. Yes, it's true, Christians aren't supposed to determine an individual's final placement as heaven or hell; Christians aren't supposed to say, for example, "May you rot in hell." But those of faith are tasked with the responsibility for calling out evil and fighting evil, and how can that task be accomplished if no judgments are issued? Besides, there's this thing called discernment, and it's a gift of the spirit that helps distinguish between good and evil. Dan Darling, media pundit, best-selling author and teacher of all-things-faith, joins the discussion.

One major reason unity in our nation, families, and churches is so fragile is because division and cynicism have been incentivized. We all stand to gain a lot when we retreat to our own corners and tribes. It's easier to sit in an echo chamber and be told you are right than to wrestle with different perspectives. Less gracious, more extreme opinions get more clicks, followers, and campaign donations. It costs us nothing to think ill of the other side, create caricatures, and retreat—but it costs us a lot to move toward one another. Division pays, but unity requires sacrifice. On this episode of All Things I'm talking with Daniel Darling, a cultural commentator, author, pastor, and professor, who regularly appears in mainstream media to talk about current events and trends through a Christian lens (you know that's my fave). Dan and I talk about: - Why we bother engaging in culture anyway—especially when it can be costly personally and professionally. - Why 2020 was such a watershed moment for division amongst Americans. - How some issues are worth dividing over, but most are not. - How it's costly, but so worth it, to fight for unity. - How Christians will indeed be judged by the outside by how well we love one another on the inside. - How you and I can determine to be people who fight cynicism and move toward unity. - How God's best days are not behind him. He is at work here and now. - We are called to go (Great Commission) and we are called to love (Great Commandment) and with God's help, every Christian really can do both! In a world of cynicism and division, be a hopeful stayer. This conversation is so helpful and encouraging! Last week President Biden announced a plan to cancel student debt, about $330 billion worth. The cost to taxpayers could be as high as half a trillion dollars. My friend Dan Darling joked on Twitter that youth pastors just received the gift of a great sermon illustration, but some have actually defended the policy (which even former Obama advisors have criticized) by pointing to Jesus words in the Lord's Prayer: “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors…” For example, an editorial in TIME argues that when Christ prayed these words in the Garden, He was referring to the Old Testament “Year of Jubilee,” in which debts were canceled every 50 years. So, mass debt forgiveness, conclude the authors, comes from Moses not Marx. OK, I'm lost. Is it now suddenly OK to impose Old Testament laws on America? Which ones? All of them? It's so strange after hearing over and over that when it comes to things such as sexual morality, the Bible is not clear; but when it comes to debt policy, it is... In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus was not talking about economic debts. Both His words and the Year of Jubilee in Israel point to the forgiveness of a debt far greater than college loans: our sin. That debt was paid in full by His blood, not by moving tax dollars around.
