Mishaps and misjudgments are part of the fun when we travel - right? Well, at least that's what my guests and I decide in Episode 95 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast. I start off chatting with Matt and Marilyn from the Words with Winos podcast, who managed to make a bit of a misjudgment when they very first set out on their long travelling journey ... but of course, they recovered from it and I'm glad they did (I love following their travels!). Following on from that I talk to Samantha Fisher who ponders the idea that perhaps there are no mistakes when we travel. She has some examples of what's happened to her when she's made what we might call a travel mistake - and perhaps it's not all bad. Finally, I have a fun talk with Elizabeth and Jeff Newcamp, who have had all kinds of travelling adventures over the years and have rather a long list of mishaps to tell about - and definitely prove that mistakes often make the best travel stories. Amsterdam is a popular tourist destination known for its fast-paced bicycles, "coffee" shops, tulips, houseboats, art, and history. But is it kid-friendly? Along with her three energetic little boys and loving husband, they are exploring Europe in search of amazing experiences. They have found quintessential European gems, some of the best playgrounds on the continent and have made some incredible memories along the way. Elizabeth is currently based in the Netherlands and shares her travels on Dutch Dutch Goose. Follow Elizabeth on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. TIPS FOR VISITING AMSTERDAM WITH KIDS Public transportation in the Netherlands is one of the best. It is clean, easy to use, fast and it gets you everywhere. The tourist crowds tend to die down some in the summertime, seeing as most people try to go during the flowers in the spring. It doesn’t tend to get super hot even though it is the summer. If you are going for the flowers make sure to be at the flowers early and then maybe explore the fields in the afternoon. Be aware that it rains quite a lot in the Netherlands, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying your trip. Everywhere is setup to have indoor areas as well because they know how the weather can be. Be sure to looking into getting tickets for museums and events online and in advance because of the lines or even just in case the place only sells online. It is a great idea to rent a bike in the parks in Amsterdam, but it is not recommended to bike around in the city. There is a lot of traffic and it can be really dangerous if you are not prepared! Be aware that if you are traveling with kids ‘Coffee Shop’ is actually a shop that sells pot. They are well marked but just be aware that they are scattered around. Some areas there may be more than others. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO At the Rijksmuseum there is an iconic I love Amsterdam sign that would be a great spot to take a family photo. You can also get a great shot in the flower fields if you visit during the spring. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Elizabeth loves to wear Nordstrom Zella leggings along with a comfortable top. She also loves to wear her Hunter rain boots. When she is not wearing rain boots she like to wear her Rothy flats which are actually made of recycled material and you can wash them. I'm immensely curious on how culture affects child development - if you have kind of international kids who relate to more than one culture, how does this change the way they grow up? I know from experience that even the simple act of travelling to a foreign country changes how kids think and in Episode 85 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I speak with a number of parents who've really brought up their children to be multicultural kids. I start off chatting to Elizabeth and Jeff Newcamp who have been living with their three young sons in the Netherlands for the past couple of years. They talk about how to fit in and what it's like when your young kids learn the local language faster than you do! I then hear a great story from Jo Castro who had a serial ex-pat life with her husband and two kids before settling relatively recently in Western Australia. Her anecdote really speaks to what being international kids must feel like (and it also made me giggle, so make sure you listen). Finally, I talk to Christine Knight, an Australian whose daughter was born in New York City, where they lived for the first few years of her life before returning home to Sydney. It's interesting to hear how important this second nationality is not just to Christine and her husband but to their daughter, too. Sometimes crossing a border into a new country is simple. Sometimes it’s not - and it’s the not-simple crossings that turn into great stories later! In Episode 78 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I chat with several guests who’ve had some particularly interesting border crossing moments. First up, I chat with Elizabeth and Jeff Newcamp, who are currently living in Europe and had something of a tricky experience trying to cross the border from Croatia into Slovenia. From Europe, I move on to Africa with Ian from the Barefoot Backpacker. He has some fun tales to tell about crossing borders between Ghana and Burkina Faso, and again between Benin and Togo. These borders are relatively seldom crossed by tourists so they’re not quite set up as clearly as you’d hope! Finally, Matt Eakin has a hilarious story about the time he needed to enter Bangladesh and didn’t have the required visa. Let’s just say his method isn’t something I’m recommending you try (and he agrees!), but it makes for a great story. Who doesn’t love nature - at least some of the time? Episode 75 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is all about travels in nature, and the many and varied forms this travel can take. It starts off in pretty extreme nature when I chat with Luke Mackin, who has a tale of confronting nature in rural Sumatra. But Samantha Fisher, my next guest, has another take completely and describes urban pockets of nature before waxing poetic about her experiences seeing the nature of New Zealand. My final guests are Elizabeth and Jeff of Dutch Dutch Goose and they have yet another great take on travelling to see nature, with some fabulous examples of the kind of nature both adults and kids can enjoy in various parts of Europe. Today on the show we have Jeff and Elizabeth from {Dutch Dutch Goose} who are living in the Netherlands and exploring as much of the world as they possibly can. 3 years ago Jeff had a job offer that moved them to Europe so they packed it all up and moved along with their 2 boys for a new adventure. Fast forward to now, they've had another son in the Netherlands, made some great friends and had some epic adventures! Elizabeth shares her experience about having their 3rd son there and also what it's like to get involved and connect with local Dutch families. They both agree the locals have given them so much guidance to see the less popular cities and towns all across Europe that get missed on the average trip. Teaching them to explore more than just the capital (London, Paris, Rome, Etc) and find the diamond towns in the rough so to speak :) Be sure to listen to the whole episode to hear how the boys have adjusted to life and school while living abroad. And also their son's fun point of view after seeing the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Visiting museums when you’re somewhere new is very high on the list of many travellers. I don’t love all museums, but there are many around the world that I really truly do love. In Episode 72 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I chat with four travellers who all have lots to say about their love of museums. First up, I chat with Leah Smileski of Kid Bucket List who is very passionate about museums and has some really interesting news about the museums of Skopje, Macedonia. It seems like right now is the best time ever to check out their museums. Next, I talk with Elizabeth and Jeff of Dutch Dutch Goose, who are ex-pats currently living in the Netherlands with their three young sons. We discuss just how you can help kids really love museums and they tell me about some of their favourite museums in Europe so far. Finally, I get to reunite with a long lost student of my travel writing course, Samantha Fisher, who is about on the same level as me with her museum love. It’s interesting to talk about what makes a museum experience one that you really love and remember forever.
