What usually holds you back from starting a conversation? Can you remember a time you avoided someone out of fear of saying the wrong thing? Jay sits down with behavioral researcher and bestselling author Vanessa Van Edwards for a powerful conversation that blends science, honesty, and so many surprising moments. Vanessa, who refers to herself as a “recovering awkward person,” shares how her biggest social struggles became the driving force behind her mission to crack the code on human connection. Together, Jay and Vanessa dive into the fascinating world of charisma, exploring the 97 cues, from eye contact to tone of voice, that quietly shape how we’re seen and understood. Vanessa breaks down why so many of us feel overlooked or underestimated—and introduces “signal amplification bias,” a concept that explains why the signals you think you’re sending might not be landing the way you expect. Vanessa shows us how confidence isn’t always something you’re born with but something you can build, with intention and awareness. The conversation goes even deeper as they unpack the tricky balance between warmth and competence, especially for women in the workplace, and how vulnerability isn’t a weakness, but often your greatest strength. They explore how to create those magic “me too” moments that form instant connections, spot the hidden red flags in communication, and let go of the need to be liked by everyone in order to be truly seen by the right people. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Make a Great First Impression Without Saying a Word How to Break the Ice with a Simple “Hey” How to Balance Warmth and Competence in Any Conversation How to Create Connection Using “Me Too” Moments How to Exit a Conversation Gracefully (Without Offending Anyone) How to Spot a Liar Using Body Language and Micro-Expressions How to Ask Better Questions That Spark Real Conversations How to Recognize the Difference Between Charisma and Manipulation Whether you struggle with social anxiety, want to level up your leadership presence, or are just tired of surface-level small talk, this episode is packed with practical tools and uplifting wisdom to help you connect with more authenticity and power. Send us a textDid you know that as a writer who is building an audience, you have a secret superpower? It's one that not every writer unlocks, but has the power to enhance your writing journey AND create a built-in group of people invested in your success. Want to know what it is? Listen in on Episode 140 of Just One Simple Thing and find out! Many of you listening have a book to write. The book of your heart. The book of God's calling. As you write, you are also building an audience ... a community of people who believe in your message. And believe in you. You may think of your book as your own project...something you have to do alone. But what's the point in building a community if you can't take them along with you on your greatest journey? And when people feel like a valued part of something, they are invested in making it successful.Pick some ways from this list to involve your audience in your book project.Test out your content. Sharing some of the concepts and content of your book idea is a great way to see what is really resonating with your audience.Ask for examples. New concepts are easier to understand when there are concrete examples to go along with them.Get opinions on components of the book. Let your audience help you choose the title, subtitle, and cover art.Share parts of the journey. What did you learn about yourself or about God as you went through the process? Sharing these things makes your writer life more relatable, even to people who are not writers.Try a focus group. Get a few people together to read a chapter and discuss it with you. These are just a few ways that you can include your audience in your book project. And when it's time to launch that book, you'll have a whole group of people who are personally invested in you and the success of your book. Doesn't that sound a lot better than doing it all alone? ONE SIMPLE ACTION STEPPick one or two of these ideas and make a plan for including your audience. You don't have to do them all...a little can go a long way. And be sure to let me know how it works out for you! Thanks for hanging out with me here today. I hope these ideas are helpful to you. Venturing off into new knowledge—whether it's a PhD, R&D, or building something new—comes with a strange, painful truth: you need a community, but you won't know who that community is until after you've been completely alone. You have to feel lost. You have to not know what you're doing. You have to go through hard knocks, pain, and moments where you say, “What the hell, why is this happening?” And only then—when you've got your own story, your own struggle—do the right people start to show up. People who say, “That's me. I've been there.”You don't find community first. You build it after. Not by pretending to have it all together, but by being open, honest, and brave enough to talk about the stuff that most people never do.It's painful. It's lonely. But it's the only way that works.

Jesus had a crew and you need one too! However, let's talk about the steps you need to take to find your community of people. Do you find yourself often wondering why you are in a season of being secluded? Or why does it seem so hard to find lasting friendships.I am walking you step by step on what you need to do get connected to a community of love and support. The three steps involve prayer, being secure in who you are and being intentional about making friendships. Hope is a powerful motivator and an essential component of emotional resilience and mental wellness.  So how do we hold on to hope regardless of if we are having a bad day, a hard month or years full of struggle? Some might say the first step to persevering with hope is to start by “acknowledging the good and the bad” in life…and I would suggest instead of looking at what is happening in your life as good or bad; Acknowledge the easy and the hard…or maybe even where there is resistance and where there is ease….does it feel like you are gliding down a slide with ease or climbing up a steep mountain right now?  When we go beyond seeing things as good or bad, lucky or unlucky-we also recognize that all things can be used for our betterment and growth. It is important to RECOGNIZE THE HARD -because having HOPE is not simply ignoring trials or pretending that everything is OK.  You can't move into action or create needed changes if you don't face truths. Hope is not about ignoring reality: It's about maintaining a positive outlook even when facing difficulties. So you first acknowledge where you are at and then step 2- think about “where do I want to be?” VISUALIZE what you want to see happening. VISUALIZE YOUR GOAL and what it will feel like to obtain it and what your life will be like when you have it. “CREATE A HOPE PATHWAY”.   Hope begets hope.  When we are successful we are more motivated to persevere.  The best way to get success on your HOPE PATHWAY is to take small steps in the direction you want to go. Soo…REMIND YOURSELF OF YOUR WHY BEHIND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Remember your WHY.  There isn't a right or wrong reason to want something in your life. But know that if you are doing it for someone else, your desire may not be as strong nor the results as lasting.  And if you look to movies, dramas, Youtubers, Realty TV shows and Hollywood culture as your role models.  Remember that if your reasons stem from fear, self loathing, a desire for revenge, a need for power or from jealousy- your feelings of satisfaction when you obtain your goal will be short lived…because these emotions only crave for more…true peace, contentment and joy will always be just out of your reach.  If you feel like giving up-remember why you started in the first place and figure out a worthy why to go after.SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE.  Whether it is a paid trainer, a life coach or therapist who is your cheerleader or it is your best friend or your family…connecting with others who will help lighten your load on your HOPE PATHWAY. FIND YOUR PEOPLE. And that includes Seeking professional help when needed-If you are struggling with overwhelming challenges, consider therapy to develop coping mechanisms and build resilience. Essentially-Persevering with HOPE MEANS you are actively nurturing a belief that things can get better and that your efforts will lead to positive change. In other words-you have faith. FAITH is a foundational seed that needs to be watered and cared for often so that it can grow!! #6 HAVING HOPE TAKES ACTION. The ability to find joy in your circumstances is directly tied to how much time you spend CULTIVATING THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE. Being happy in your surroundings has less to do with your surroundings and more to do with what you are focusing on in that space. Be patient with yourself & don't compare to otheSend us a textSupport the showPlease consider clicking below to make a one time donation to help "Monday Mindset With Isha Warriors" reach more people across the world!Donate Here
