Clean Lines: Sustainable Innovation and Retail Evolution with Rothy's VP Global Retail In this episode of RetailCraft, Ian Jindal speaks with Giovanni Lepori, Vice President of Global Retail at Rothy's, from the brand's flagship store in New York. Giovanni shares how Rothy's has revolutionized footwear manufacturing with 3D knitting technology, built a sustainable and scalable business model, and expanded into physical retail while staying true to its clean design ethos. The conversation explores themes of circularity, disciplined growth, and the challenges of scaling a direct-to-consumer brand globally. Episode Overview Rothy's Origins and Revolutionary Manufacturing Giovanni recounts how Rothy's founders developed their groundbreaking 3D knitting technology to create zero-waste shoes made from recycled materials. He highlights the challenges of scaling production and the importance of owning their factory in China to ensure quality and sustainability. Clean Lines and Circular Design The brand's aesthetic—distilled simplicity with clean lines—is paired with a commitment to circularity. Giovanni discusses Rothy's zero-waste factory, pilot programs for recycling worn shoes, and the durability that makes its products “last forever.” Transitioning from Online to Offline Giovanni explains how Rothy's began as a direct-to-consumer brand before experimenting with physical retail. The first store in Pacific Heights was an instant success, leading to a deliberate rollout of premium stores like the Flatiron flagship in New York. Challenges in Scaling Retail From inventory management to maintaining brand values in wholesale partnerships, Giovanni reflects on the complexities of omnichannel retail. He emphasizes disciplined growth and ensuring profitability in every location. Looking Ahead: Global Expansion Giovanni outlines plans for international growth, including standalone stores in London and beyond. He also highlights product innovation, new categories like menswear and kids' shoes, and the ongoing evolution of sustainable materials. As CMO of San Francisco-based Rothy's, Jamie Gersch is fueling sustainability-focused innovation in fashion. With a rich background in retail, including roles at Old Navy and Gap, Gersch brought a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to Rothy's when she joined in 2022. Following its inception in 2012, Rothy's made its mark by turning plastic waste into stylish, comfortable shoes. And, in recent years, the brand has expanded its product assortment to include bags and other accessories, while maintaining its commitment to sustainability. Rothy's has 3 million customers through 20 retail stores and e-commerce in 19 countries, plus the vertically integrated company operates its own factory in China. In fiscal year 2022, the last year before it went private, Rothy's net revenue was $183 million, with annual revenues consistently over $150 million. Gersch has been instrumental in the brand's growth by focusing on innovative marketing strategies, enhancing the brand's digital presence and expanding its physical retail footprint. Under Gersch's leadership, Rothy's has relaunched its website to better tell its sustainability story. Plus, her approach to tapping into authentic communities and leveraging experiential marketing has driven significant engagement and brand loyalty. Rothy's commitment to sustainability is evident in its production processes. The brand uses a unique 3D knitting technology to create its shoes, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency. This method allows Rothy's to produce shoes that are not only environmentally friendly but also durable and comfortable. The company has recycled millions of plastic bottles to create its signature thread, transforming waste into high-quality, stylish products. The brand's retail strategy includes opening new stores in key markets — it recently opened a location on New York City's Flatiron neighborhood. By providing consumers with the opportunity to experience Rothy's products in person, the brand strengthens its connection with its audience and showcases the tangible benefits of its sustainable practices. It has plans for further expansion. On the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast, Gersch discusses Rothy's current initiatives and future direction, including the launch of its new summer footwear lines, its international expansion, its experiential marketing and its relaunch of rothys.com.

In this episode, Kunle Campbell interviews Nirav Sheth, CEO and founder of Anata, a premier eCommerce partner for direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands. They discuss the outlook for 2022 and 2024 in the eCommerce industry. They review the challenges faced by brands in 2023, the success factors for the 20% of brands that performed well, and the importance of focusing on lifetime value and retention. They also provide tips for Q1 strategies, including exploring wholesale opportunities and investing in user experience (UX). The episode concludes with an outlook for 2024 and a reminder to slow down and strategize.Takeaways2023 was a challenging year for many eCommerce brands, with a focus on profitability rather than growth. The 20% of brands that performed well in 2023 had a strong focus on both brand and growth, as well as a loyal community of customers. In Q1 of 2024, brands should consider exploring wholesale opportunities and investing in user experience (UX) to provide personalized experiences for customers. It is important for brands to pay attention to macroeconomic conditions, such as supply chain disruptions, and make necessary adjustments. The outlook for 2024 is optimistic, with a focus on strategic decision-making and slow, deliberate actions.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background03:22 Review of 202307:00 Success Factors for Brands in 202311:46 Q4 Recovery and Assessment of 202313:43 Focus on Lifetime Value and Retention16:19 Q1 Strategies: Wholesale and UX26:47 Outlook for 202428:18 Parting Advice: Slow Down29:22 Anata's Services --- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: TreydReady for a game-changer in your podcast lineup?I've got just the thing – ‘Treyd Secrets', a new podcast that's all about giving you the operational edge in e-commerce.Let's cut straight to the chase.Unlike most e-commerce podcasts that dwell on marketing and growth stories,Treyd Secrets dives deep into the operational heart of e-commerce.This is where the real magic happens. Why tune in?Because Treyd Secrets brings you the nuts and bolts of e-commerce success– we're talking the nitty-gritty of inventory hacks, cash flow management, sales strategies, supply chain intricacies, product sourcing secrets, and the ins and outs of financing. It's the operational wisdom you need to keep your business not just running, but thriving. Kelly and Lizz are ready with mom hacks galore today, but still haven't solved how to be sick as a mom. And if you're in ‘The age of Fred' alongside Kelly, Lizz wants you to know “You're doing a hard job beautifully.” → Calling all Hyundai Tucson drivers! It's your week to head on over to the Carpool reviews and leave Kelly and Lizz a rating and message about why you love the show! Today's millennial word is glazing. And the duo talks about letting kids help with home decor. They love the advice to bring a cute decor item to the trash can section and see if it still shines, but they'll be heading to the toy aisle to see their find next to a slew of hot wheels as their final test before buying. Batiste dry shampoo, a shoe haul for Hattie, and a cast iron bread pan are Kelly's last three transactions. She also talks capsule wardrobes — her favorite one being from Emily O and Bows. Lizz splurged on the oh so comfortable and darling Rothy's Mary Jane's, an Abercrombie haul, and Halloween jammies for James with the same bread pan as Kelly. We are taking a break this summer (not a vacation!) to produce new stories, so we are sharing some of our favorite episodes while we're working. This episode was first broadcast in 2018 and is one of our all-time favorites. The Achilli siblings would like you to know that if there was a Dead Parent Contest (there's not), they would win the gold medal. In 2008, their dad was murdered by a hitman in a dispute over a girlfriend. Four years after their father's killers are tried and convicted, their mom dies after driving her car off a cliff. This is a story about being orphaned as young adults and the family ties that keep siblings together. — Listener support makes our independent podcast possible. It's one of our most requested topics in general, but especially when it comes to dating. My dear friend, Jess Connolly is here to talk all things friendship! Listen in our our conversation with my friends, Lani, and John David, as we talk about how to be friends with the opposite sex in a healthy way even if they're married, what our married friends need to know about being friends with single people (and vice versa!), and what it looks like to be single in church. This is a conversation we can ALL benefit from: single, married, dating. This one's for all of us! We're at the tail end of our For the Love of Calming the Chaos series–and if you've gotten a chance to hear the whole series, we hope you've been able to take away some actionable items toward further peace in your life. Our last episode in the series is the perfect capper toward extending that ability to calm the chaos during the disruptive times of our lives, but also during the heartbreakingly difficult times. Our guest this week brings us the very comforting message that simply bucking up or trying to cheerlead ourselves into positivity isn't going to cut it. She gives us permission to actively accept our sadness, and then some tools for how to process it and move it from chaos to a place of peace. Katherine May is an international best-selling author, including the books Enchantment Awakening Wonder in An Anxious Age and Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times. Katherine is going to walk us through not only her own story of a hard winter season she endured, and what she learned, but she'll show us how we can be gentle with ourselves and believe that we deserve peace, no matter the circumstances. Jen and Katherine talk about: When those winter seasons come, just when you think you can't or will never be happy again and the dark pit feels too overwhelming; that's typically when the winter begins to cease and recovery begins Giving yourself grace to believe you haven't done anything wrong if you're still suffering a week, a month or even six months later - the process of unlearning your old ways of life and relearning new ones can be painful and lengthy Not all the lessons we learn come from happiness, they come from sorrow, and how to accept that Chaos doesn't just emanate from choices that we've made or that we've onboarded too many things, but sometimes when tragedy or heartache has found its way to our doorstep. Allowing ourselves to rest and retreat at these times is a gift we can all give ourselves. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! And it seems like everybody else is carrying on and they're all fine. And you are uniquely not fine.” - Katherine May “There's something about how raw you are in that time [of suffering]. So there are moments of intense beauty that are an integral part of this, part of the suffering.”- Katherine May “People who've gone through major winters always seem to look back and say, ‘do you know what? I wouldn't have not gone through it if it meant that I couldn't be who I am now.' You almost appreciate them because change is always necessary.” - Katherine May “You are not alone. You feel very alone, but you are actually part of a massive community of other people who are going through the same thing as you, but maybe for different reasons. And there's this incredible bond between all of you that might not be obvious, but you can trust this space and you can trust your sadness.” - Katherine May Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age - book by Katherine May Wintering, the Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times - book by Katherine May Guest's Links: Katherine's Website Katherine's Instagram Katherine's Pinterest Connect with Jen!: Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube

Five years ago, on Mother's Day, Katie was sitting in prison, far from her kids. She couldn't hug them, she couldn't kiss them. It was at that moment she decided she would completely change her life so she could be with them again. But changing her life required a lot of help that didn't exist in prison. Then one day, she opened a book in the prison library and a brochure fell out. It was for a place called Benevolence Farm, and they could help her change her life. If you want to help Benevolence Farm continue helping formerly incarcerated women in North Carolina, you can shop the Farm's products here or make a donation to their programs here. _____________ Listener support makes our independent podcast possible.
