What is the status of Starbucks' turnaround? This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features Mike Grams, the chief operating officer of the coffee shop giant.Grams joined us from a Starbucks Reserve location in New York City following the company's Investor Day presentation. He spoke extensively about the company's various plans to improve the operations inside the chain's coffeehouses. That includes the remodels the chain is making to make even the smallest locations friendlier for in-store customers. He also explains why that is important for a company that has mobile order, drive-thru and delivery.Grams discusses the chain's “Green Apron” service model and why that model both helps with manager morale as well as service time. He also gives an update on the chain's push to improve service times and what else the company plans to do to speed service. We also talk about Starbucks' expansion plans and why the company believes it can fit 5,000 more shops, at least, in the U.S.We're talking Starbucks on A Deeper Dive so please check it out.

Andy unpacks a truly strange lobby interaction at iHeart Media that somehow blurs the line between coffee shop and strip club, while an Orange County business faces backlash for doing the same. The crew also tackles the internet’s latest cultural emergency—men getting bangs in what some are calling a fresh hate crime against women—before Heather Brooker drops in with her entertainment segment, delivering her take on Wuthering Heights and whether the classic still hits or totally misses.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Art Marketing Podcast: How to Sell Art Online and Generate Consistent Monthly Sales
If you sat down with a stranger at a coffee shop, you'd never just say "art, art, buy my art" for 30 minutes. So why is that your entire social media strategy? In this episode, Patrick breaks down why most artists and photographers are failing on social media — and it has nothing to do with the algorithm. It's because you're one-dimensional. All art, no human. In 2026, AI can fake everything on a screen. The only thing it can't fake is you. Your story, your scars, your weird hobbies, your real life. That's the competitive advantage now. In this episode: The coffee shop test — would you talk to yourself the way you post? Why Van Gogh's paintings didn't sell until his personal letters were published Brian Chesky (Airbnb CEO) on why "the opposite of artificial is real" The freeway analogy — why 95% of your content lands in one lane How to stop hiding behind the canvas (or the lens) Why AI makes your authenticity more valuable, not less "We're not anti-AI. We're just pro human." If you struggle with telling your story, the previous episode has copy-paste prompts that use AI to interview you and pull your story out — even if you think your life "isn't dramatic enough." What Matters Most When Opening a Coffee Shop- and Where to Spend Your Money - Episode #436 Cat & Cloud Coffee www.catandcloud.com/ Summary Thinking about opening a coffee shop? Here's where your money actually matters—and where it doesn't. In this episode, Chris Baca and Jared Truby…aka Dale ;) unpack what actually matters when you're opening (or refreshing) a café: create a real feeling of place without overspending on flashy build-out, “blow the bag” on the essentials (espresso machine, grinders, and water filtration), and don't get distracted by optional prestige projects like roasting, direct trade, or origin travel before the core experience is dialed. They also zoom out on how café design has evolved since early third-wave homogeneity and land on a grounded definition of “sustaining excellence”: either innovate with intention or “plus the show” by obsessively maintaining the details that signal care—because culture is what people learn to accept as normal. This weekend, Seattleites will be able to buy drinks from the city’s first Thai coffee shop: Nudibranch Coffee, which is set to open its doors Feb. 7 on Capitol Hill. The shop will serve drinks that reflect Thailand’s popular flavors and hot climate. Nudibranch also plans to host low-cost community events at the shop, like guest chef nights and gallery walks. This cafe-slash-community-space is just a few days away from opening its doors... But we were able to steal some time from the busy owners to hear how the vision for Seattle’s first Thai coffee shop came together. It's a fact: Denver is a coffee town. Whether it's beloved local chains or third wave cafes, the Mile High City abounds with cozy coffee shops offering all sorts of different experiences. Entrepreneur, content creator, and coffee shop aficionado Michelle Jackson joined host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love last September to talk about the local spots that bring the ambiance, offer creative drink choices, and capture what it means to be the best at the coffee game in the Mile High City. We're revisiting that classic episode today. For a true coffee nerd's take, check out listeners Nate and Marie Evans' breakdown of their favorite spots. Bree mentioned the lawsuit local baristas had filed against Starbucks corporate's dress code. Michelle mentioned Weathervane's “grandma-core” cabins that you can rent in Clear Creek County. On today’s episode of The Wake Up Call, the crew dives into one of the most unexpectedly heated debates in Fargo: Does putting your jacket on a table officially reserve it — or is that just wishful thinking? A Froggy listener sparks the conversation with a real-life coffee shop dilemma, and the team breaks down what proper etiquette looks like in a shared space… Fargo‑style. Then it’s time for the listeners to weigh in with their own unfiltered texts — from coat‑movin’ chaos to loopholes, power moves, and the unwritten rules everyone follows (or breaks). It’s relatable, it’s local, it’s a little awkward in the most Midwestern way possible — and it might change the way you claim a table ever again.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew is recording from Chicago this week, in town for a denominational conference and surviving winter one session at a time. Frank hosted a Cross & Crown launch party at a local coffee shop, proving once again that church planting runs just as much on caffeine as it does on faith.Back at Lakeview, Tim officially unveiled the new site plan to the congregation, complete with vision, anticipation, and the collective sound of people trying to picture where everything will go.From conference halls to coffee counters to construction drawings, it's another reminder that ministry happens in a lot of places, and none of them are boring.
What if feeding people with dignity could also build a sustainable and stronger local food system? In this episode of The Lou Review Podcast, we sit down with Rhona Bowles Kamar, founder and executive director of Feed Louisville, to explore how one Louisville-based nonprofit is redefining hunger relief with creativity, dignity, and long-term vision.Born out of the food insecurity crisis revealed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Feed Louisville rescues surplus food and transforms it into nourishing, chef-prepared meals for unhoused and food-insecure neighbors. What started as an urgent response has grown into a vital community force—powered by former restaurant professionals who believe good food is a human right, not a luxury.Rhona also shares how Feed Louisville is thinking beyond traditional nonprofit models through its social enterprise, ZEST—a plant-forward, grab-and-go meal line created by chefs and sold locally. Available at Value Market, Rainbow Blossom, Fante's Coffee Shop, Billion Cup Coffee, and more locations coming soon, every ZEST purchase directly supports Feed Louisville's hunger relief work.A former chef and co-owner of the beloved Ramsi's Café on the World, and founder of Raising Hope Organic Farm, Rhona brings decades of culinary, agricultural, and community leadership to her mission. Her work has earned widespread recognition, including being named a 2025 Partners in Philanthropy Nonprofit Visionary Leader and a Today's Woman Magazine Most Admired Woman. This conversation dives into food rescue, nonprofit innovation, social enterprise, and what it really takes to feed people with dignity—while strengthening Louisville from the inside out.In this episode, you'll learn:How Feed Louisville turns rescued surplus food into chef-prepared mealsWhy dignity and access matter in hunger reliefHow ZEST supports nonprofit sustainability through local retail partnershipsThe role former restaurant professionals play in community careWhat it takes to build a mission-driven organization that lasts

"Je n'ai pas envie d'ouvrir un n'ième coffee shop ", c'est la phrase que j'ai le plus entendu dernièrement dans mes accompagnements à l'ouverture de coffee shop. Ever feel like you're sprinting into the end of the year instead of intentionally stepping into it like the CEO you truly are? In this episode, Lindsay shares one of her FAVORITE year-end traditions—the CEO retreat. And no… it doesn't require a fancy hotel, a five-figure mastermind, or a flight to a tropical destination. A CEO retreat can be as simple as you + a cozy coffee shop + a peppermint latte + a notebook. What makes it magical is not the location—it's the space you give yourself to reflect, dream, plan, and realign. Lindsay breaks down the FIVE steps to hosting your own meaningful, productive, and magical CEO retreat (Disney-style ✨), complete with practical prompts and inspiration from how Disney Imagineers and leadership teams plan, evaluate, and dream up next-level experiences. ✨ In This Episode, You'll Learn: 1. How to Reflect on the Past Year Like a Disney Pro Take inventory of your wins, lessons, and flops—just like Disney evaluates which shows, snacks, or events resonated each season. 2. How to Reconnect With Your Big Vision Revisit your “why” and make sure your business still aligns with the long-term mission you're creating—because just like Walt said, Disneyland will never be finished. 3. How to Choose Your 3 CEO Priorities for the New Year Too many goals = diluted magic. Lindsay teaches you how to set focused priorities that support real momentum. 4. How to Map Out Your Profit Plan for the Year Design a simple quarterly roadmap so you know what you're launching, when you're selling, and how your offers support your revenue goals. 5. Why Fun, Magic, and Joy Should Be a CEO Strategy Sprinkling in more ease, play, and magic isn't optional—it's fuel that helps you create a sustainable business you actually love.

A listener asked me a question recently about how to approach operating a coffee shop in a rural setting versus a larger city. After a short exchange over email I decided it was some thing that we should probably chat about here on the show. After all, specialty coffee shops are popping up more and more in suburban and rural settings, and there may be some key distinctions to consider. Today we will be talking about some different differences between the two settings and how you as a professional or an operator manager or owner can approach hospitality and business in each of these settings in a way that best serves the people in those communities. We will also talk about the limits of those differences and turn to how they are not too dissimilar, and give you a frame work that will help you ask the right questions before making decisions around menu, style, and approach. What happens when your dream business nearly destroys you, and then teaches you everything you needed to know about money? We don't usually talk about this. The early days. The subway rides hauling coffee beans across Chicago. The polar vortex brought us to the edge of bankruptcy. The moment we realized we'd been doing money completely wrong. But Perry asked us to get real. So we did. In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, we're pulling back the curtain on our entrepreneurial journey, from bootstrapping a coffee shop with zero financial backing to discovering the principles that would eventually reshape how we help business owners build wealth. You'll hear: Why we delivered coffee beans on the subway before our shop even opened (and what that taught us about building a business with no money) The brutal wake-up call that came during a Chicago polar vortex—and the single lesson that saved everything What our financial planner told us contradicted everything we thought we knew about "saving for retirement." The three things every entrepreneur needs to survive (hint: passion isn't enough) Why we were told we were "too entrepreneurial" to get hired and how that rejection became our biggest opportunity Key Quote: "We were naive about how hard it would be. But that naivety is also what kept us going when smarter people would have quit." This isn't a polished success story. It's the real version—the good, the bad, and the ramen. If you've ever wondered whether you're cut out for this entrepreneur thing, or if you're doing money all wrong, this one's for you. A nonprofit coffee shop’s hopes to bring the magical world of Harry Potter to its customers have been cut short after a letter arrived at its doorstep — not an acceptance letter to Hogwarts but a warning from Warner Bros. The owner of a now-defunct pet crematorium in San Marcos has been arrested on suspicion of grand theft after customers complained they gave the owner their pets and money but were never provided cremains. Keeping up with this year's news has left many struggling with pronunciations. Rob shares insights from his annual Do Nothing retreat, where five days of stillness stripped away the noise and brought everyday moments into vivid presence. He reminds us that we rarely sit with our own thoughts, and when we do, it can unlock a quiet clarity.Gino recounts his yearly deep dive in Boulder with two lifelong friends, led this time by a soul-connected meditation guide. Through visualization and raw conversation, he found a renewed sense of connection, clarity, and most importantly, patience. Giles and Esther have delayed the recording of the podcast so they can respond to Rachel Reeves much anticipated budget. Turns out they didn't need to as the whole thing was leaked! And if the Chancellor is taxing milk shakes and lattes Giles thinks she should go a step further. Is fame bad for your health? With some experience of the matter both Esther and Giles think so. MY NEWSLETTER - https://nikolas-newsletter-241a64.beehiiv.com/subscribeJoin me, Nik (https://x.com/CoFoundersNik), as I interview Alex Nelson (https://x.com/weddingvenueguy).I'm thrilled to welcome back Alex Nelson, the wedding venue guy! When we last spoke, he had just launched his incredibly successful Iowa wedding venue with zero experience. Now, Alex has expanded beyond the venue, buying five coffee shops and supporting his wife's baby boutique, leading me to call him a mogul. We dive deep into his journey since that first venture, starting with how he and his wife booked their own venue a year and a half out, inspiring the business idea. Alex shares the shocking reality of building a multi-million dollar venue from the ground up, dealing with massive budget overruns (the original $1.5 million budget ended up closer to $2.7 million!).He explains the intense stress of unexpected construction delays that forced them to refund deposits from booked weddings, a situation he said felt like the start of a Ponzi scheme. We also discuss the key advantages of using an SBA 7A loan for real estate projects, specifically the 25-year amortization period. Finally, Alex details his shift from the high-ticket, specific needs of the wedding venue business to acquiring and rebranding multiple coffee shop locations, and offers excellent advice for anyone looking to enter the wedding venue space, including essential ways to test demand.Questions This Episode Answers:1. What are the key advantages of using an SBA 7A loan when financing both real estate and a business?2. How do you accurately gauge market demand for a new standalone wedding venue?3. What happens when catastrophic construction delays impact a business that operates purely on pre-booked deposits?4. Is it easier to buy an existing business (like four coffee shops) or build one from scratch (like a wedding venue)?5. What is the most critical first step (and financial commitment) an aspiring wedding venue owner should take?Enjoy the conversation!__________________________Love it or hate it, I'd love your feedback. Please fill out this brief survey with your opinion or email me at nik@cofounders.com with your thoughts.__________________________MY NEWSLETTER: https://nikolas-newsletter-241a64.beehiiv.com/subscribeSpotify: https://tinyurl.com/5avyu98yApple: https://tinyurl.com/bdxbr284YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/nikonomicsYT__________________________This week we covered:00:00 – How he discovered the wedding-venue idea03:02 – Booking a venue before even being engaged05:26 – Saving money & early planning07:36 – COVID moment: deciding to build now10:01 – SBA loan plan + cost jump to $2.7M12:27 – Construction delays & real challenges17:19 – Taking deposits before the venue existed19:34 – Stress, refunds & near-disaster moments24:20 – Year 1–3 revenue growth29:04 – Buying & expanding multiple coffee shops36:16 – Scaling operations & improving systems41:02 – Future plans: more shops + another venue
I was invited to speak recently to a group of coffee professionals on the state of the industry based on what I have experienced through my consulting, career, and interviews. One of the main things I shared was that coffee quality in roasted form is at an all time high. But quality is embarrassingly low. The issue is not the coffee, equipment, access to information, or even money. It is a refusal to train staff and continue investing in their abilities to deliver quality. Today on Shift Break we will be discussing the urgent need for today's coffee shop to invest in and develop their staff with relevant and effective training. This has to be a priority and we are seeing the consequences across the industry as customers faith in our ability to deliver continues to decline and convenience innovations continue o go up. The solutions to your problems are not in tech, finance, or sourcing. It is in relationships, personal growth, and a culture of training that maximizes the value of each opportunity to represent the coffee well and serve the guest with excellence. Time for our last installment of live interviews from Coffee Fest 2025. This time from Orlando, FL USA! We are talking with four awesome professionals about everything from training and tasting, Florida coffee culture and barista work - to career dreams coming true through hard work and faith, and empowering your baristas with distributed management! First we are talking with Claudio Martinez! For Claudio, coffee has never been just a drink, it is part of his soul, rooted in his family's 70-year heritage in Honduras. That connection was reignited in Thessaloniki, Greece, where, under the mentorship of Tony Sebastian of I Heart Coffee Roasters, he embraced the beauty, tradition, and community that coffee represents. His first hands-on experience came in a small drive-through coffee shop in Ellendale, North Dakota, owned by a close friend. As a young barista, Claudio discovered the joy of serving others one cup at a time. That spark guided him forward, leading to opportunities with global icons such as Lavazza, where he worked as a trainer and educator, and later with List + Beisler, where he shared exceptional coffees as a green trader with roasters across the country. Each step nurtured his gratitude and reinforced his belief in coffee as a bridge between cultures and communities. Today, as the driving force behind Golden Bush Coffee, Claudio channels that lifelong passion into supporting food and beverage communities throughout Florida and beyond. His mission is grounded in humility and purpose, guided by the belief that coffee is never just about what's in the cup—it is about people, stories, and the connections it creates. Links: https://goldenbushcoffee.com/ https://www.instagram.com/goldenbushcoffee/ Next up we feature Vanessa Jaramillo! Vanessa Jaramillo is the Regional Events & Operations Coordinator for Florida Coffee Culture, where she helps connect and celebrate the people behind Florida's growing specialty coffee scene. As a Colombian-American, Vanessa's connection to coffee began long before she became a barista — she visited origin before ever working behind a bar. After discovering specialty coffee in Australia during her gap year, she returned to Florida with a deep passion for community and storytelling. With three years in the coffee industry, Vanessa has immersed herself in every part of the craft — from cuppings and throwdowns to competitions and community events. She's driven by the belief that coffee is a universal connector that brings people together from all walks of life. Links: https://www.flcoffeeculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/floridacoffeeculture/ We then turn to chat with Maria Esther Lopez Thome! María Esther is the Co-Founder and Co-Creator of Coffea School, a Coffee & Tea Training Center located in Miami Gardens, Florida. Lawyer, with Master in Tax and Administrative Law. Q-Instructor. SCA Authorized Trainer in the entire Coffee Skills Program, from seed to cup. SCA-ReCo Fellow. SCA Technical Standard Committee Fellow, 2016-2018. CQI Q-Processing Professional. CQI Quality Evaluation and Post-Harvest Processing Assistant Instructor. CVA Program Trainer. Has traveled the world teaching about coffee: Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Ethiopia, United States. Passionate about coffee and the incredible relationships that growth in within. A sustainability believer, always willing to learn more. Links: https://coffeaschool.com/ https://www.instagram.com/coffeacompany/?hl=en Finally we round off the episode with a wonderful conversation with Katherine Morris! Katherine Morris is the Owner and CFO of Cherry Coffee Company in Fort Worth, Texas, which includes Cherry Coffee Shop, a values-driven neighborhood café, and Novel Coffee Roasters, a specialty roastery with a focus on intentional sourcing and private-label partnerships. With over 18 years of experience across finance, nonprofit, and hospitality, Katherine blends operational know-how with a people-first approach to leadership. At Cherry, she introduced a shared management model that empowers baristas to lead key areas of the business — from coffee development to inventory — helping create a resilient, collaborative team culture. Abi Murray invites us to a cup of coffee and a nice conversation care of the Chatty Cafe Scheme. This all began on a typical wet and windy UK day when Abi's sister Alex Hoskyn was in a supermarket café with her four month old son, who wasn't great company, and she herself was feeling a bit tired and a bit fed up. Alex looked around the cafe and saw others who looked just as down as she felt herself and she started to think about the positive impact we can have on one other simply by sitting together and communicating. She knew from her own experience that when you are feeling lonely, a short conversation with another human can really brighten your day. It was in that very moment her ‘Chatter & Natter' table idea began (in her head where all dreams do) and it soon became reality. Now in 900 cafes throughout the UK and an additional 200 in Australia, the Chatty Cafe Scheme allows anyone feeling lonely to take a seat and connect. Abi shares the journey she and Alex have been on and the importance of creating community. We also speak with volunteer John Ford about his experience with this organization and what it's meant to him to connect with others as someone who moved to the UK from another country himself. Grab a cup of coffee and join us, won't you? _________________________ Steve is busy at work on the third book in his cozy mystery series, THE DOG WALKING DETECTIVES.
