Today I'm joined by Ed Nash, bassist of UK indie heroes Bombay Bicycle Club, down the line from North London to chat about Kurt Vile's modern classic 2011 album, 'Smoke Ring for My Halo'. Ed talks about discovering the album on tour in Australia, how it became the soundtrack of BBC's breakthrough period, listening to it on repeat on tour, the sonic space and soundscape of the album, Vile's sophisticated and distinctive guitar style, how Vile disguises the sophistication of his music with his 'slacker rock' image, and how the album influenced Ed's approach to guitar, arrangements and lyrics in the years since.
John sits down with indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club to talk about their sixth studio album ‘My Big Day'. Bombay Bicycle Club are a four-piece band from London, that broke onto the indie music scene with their genre defining debut album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose' in 2009. Since then they have been releasing a steady stream of music which has been met with high critical acclaim, earning them an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Prize nominations. Chatting with band members Jack Steadman and Ed Nash, the three cover a range of topics including the inspiration behind the album, their use of sampling in their music, how over-thinking can negatively influence the production process, and their collaboration with music legends Damon Albarn, Paul Epworth & Chaka Khan. Joining me for this week’s podcast is author and veteran of the war in Syria, Ed Nash. Ed is a civilian from the United Kingdom who spent his early 20’s traveling the world. He would eventually go on to work with the Free Burma Rangers(FBR). The FBR is a volunteer organization led by a former American Special Forces Officer, which provides aid to civilians in war zones around the globe. After a few stints with the FBR as an information officer, Ed went on to join up with the Kurds in the fight against ISIS in Syria. Initially, he was to work in an information/media role. One thing led to another, and he went on to deploy into combat as a Designated Marksmen or as some of the Kurds called it the Sniper unit. We discussed his time in Syria, what it was like returning home to the U.K., and much more. Enjoy.
Our guest speaker and main presenter this podcast is Ed Nash, author of Desert Sniper. Ed took part in the fighting against the so-called Islamic State when he traveled to Syria to fight with the Syrian Democratic Forces, ending up as a precision rifleman in the campaigns of Hasakah, Shadaddi, and eventually Minbij where he ended his tour. He covers everything from the odd tactics in use with the YPG, types of precision rifles employed, and some of the bits of kit that helped him through the fighting. Our next speakers are Daniel Casingena and Analyst Mick from Twitter who both have significant small arms they came across in their research that they would like to share. As provided by Mick, Daniel came across an early SMLE rifle captured from the Taliban in Helmand province, Afghanistan, complete with volley sights and pre-World War One round-nosed ammunition still in the stripper clips. Mick then showed a counterfeit revolver that has both Smith & Wesson and Colt markings on it, yet has features of neither.
