in commemoration of the New York Knicks' stunning dispatch of the San Antonio Spurs last week, I attempted to fashion an infographic for this week's show that displayed a new JD & The Straight Shot album designed in the style of Kurt Vile's ‘Philadelphia's Been Good To Me' (admittedly, “Being Charles Dolan's Son Has Been Good To Me' doesn't roll off the tongue nearly as well). My Photoshop skills are beyond primitive, so like so many other lazy motherfuckers, I resorted to AI. And that's when the shit hit the (w)fan — not only was I roundly shamed for my efforts but Thursday's celebratory parade down the Canyon of Heroes has been CANCELLED.  I am truly sorry and when we do this again in another 53 years, I promise to make better decisions. Please enjoy a promotional still from Charles Oakley's “Chopping It Up With (Charles) Oakley” (no longer available on Tubi)

Send us Fan MailThere has been a lot of talk lately that talk shows, as we know them, are too expensive to last. The big band, the studio audience, the nightly monologue -- they all cost money.Well, Tom Green thinks he has the answer. He's growing the talk show of the future now on 150 acres in Ontario on The Tom Green Farm (now streaming on Crave). What about the guests you ask? Green has managed to persuade a whole barnload of friends to come up and visit. They include Dan Aykroyd, Amber Marshall, Jason Blaine, Paul Bissonnette, Jay Baruchel, Michael Cera, DeadMau5, Jon Dore, Erica Ehm, Tony Hawk, Kurt Vile, Chantal Kreviazuk, The Tragically Hip's Paul Langlois, Steven Page, Priyanka, Jessie Reyez, Kevin Staab, George Stroumboulopoulos, and more. Plus there is his mule (16 and 1/2 hands high!), the chickens, his mom Mary Jane (now a co-producer) and an incredible vert ramp he had built for Tony Hawk on a farm field. This is Green acres, Canadian farm style. See it on Crave.

I caught up with Kurt for the Art of Longevity at his home in the leafy, trail-threaded neighbourhood of Mount Airy ("there's like one coffee shop, one grocery store kind of thing"), where, if you're a local dad with a creative streak and a guilty conscience, you too might one day hand him something strange and wonderful. Philadelphia's Been Good To Me is Kurt's tenth album, and it arrives draped in the city's 250th anniversary of independence, although Kurt would like you to know that the Philly references preceded any civic occasion. "I've really been calling out Philly the whole time," he says, without particular urgency. "I called myself Philly's constant hitmaker, you know, early on, so all signs were pointing to this for natural reasons."The phrase natural reasons crops up around Kurt Vile the way it tends to around artists who have figured something out that they couldn't quite explain if you put them on the spot. His producer Rob Schnaff asked him early in the sessions: is this your Philly record? Kurt had already sung Philadelphia into three different songs by that point. Sometimes an album tells you what it is before you know it. The record was made in part, as increasingly his records are, at home. His home studio has become the full circle he didn't quite plan to draw but which now makes complete sense: back in his twenties he was recording DIY bedroom tapes; now he's in his forties doing essentially the same thing, except for a major label (Verve) and in high fidelity. The method hasn't changed but the context has - the proverbial “slacker” has become an all out star of considerable standing in the global indie rock scene. The Art of Longevity Season 13 is powered by Bang & Olufsen. The book of the podcast, Riding the Rollercoaster, is now available. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Phoenix suivi par Savages, System of a Down, Black Strobe, Arctic Monkeys, Smashing Pumpkins, The Vaccines ou encore le Patti Smith Group. L'animatrice de RTL2 rend par ailleurs un bel hommage au guitariste Johnny Thunders, disparu à cette date en 1991, en diffusant son titre "Dead Or Alive". The Strokes dévoilent "Going Shopping". Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Zachary Cale first came onto the scene with his 2005 debut "Outlander Sessions" some 20 years ago, if you can believe that. Having navigated an eclectic era that's far beyond different from the one we currently occupy, Cale has kept a steady pulse on the melodic machine, while simultaneously sharing the stage with the likes of the great James Toth (Wooden Wand), Deer Tick, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance), Kurt Vile, and several others over the course of his multi-layered career. Following up on the brilliant release of last year's "Next Year's Ghost" with the veteran musician's instrumental debut "Love's Work," we sit down with Cale to speak about his poetic perspective on this day, and age's so-called industry, while carefully balancing the hardships of life's complicated curveballs.

I can't take credit for it 'cause Suzie told me that one of her friends already made the statement, but typing, saying, or thinking Suzannah Johannes sounds like you're talking about a cousin of Roseanne Rosannadanna.Regardless...Suzannah Johannes -- my guest for Episode No. 182 -- is a resident of one of the finest towns this side o' The Mississippi'.It's called Elle Eff Kay if you're keepin' score at home.Anyway...Suzannah was kind enough to drop by to chew the fat with me about collaborating, writing music, and working on those live-performance chops. Our chat was also a little timely as Suzannah has a) just released a new album, Kansas City: Hans Bronze Boulevard, which is available on vinyl and via the streaming platforms, and b) a second album coming to us in January: Los Angeles: The Missing Album. You can get either via her Web site, suzannahjohannes.com, or at her Bandcamp.I really enjoyed our conversation, though, and suspect that you might, too. We covered growing up in a small town, life's detours, being surrounded by supportive friends and loved ones, and making music. Indie rock pioneers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are celebrating 20 years with a special reissue. But what's the real story behind their unconventional rise to fame? In this episode of LaunchLeft, host Rain Phoenix and CYHSY frontman Alec Ounsworth, meet at Licorice Pizza in Studio City to unpack the band's journey from DIY darlings to indie rock icons. They touch on CYHSY's decision to remain unsigned. It wasn't just about rebellion, it was a commitment to artistic integrity that shaped their entire career. Ounsworth candidly discusses how his stubborn streak both helped and hindered the band's trajectory. Twenty years on, Alec reflects on how his views on collaboration and the music industry have matured. Alec then launches the up-and-coming Philly band Knifeplay, who'll be supporting CYHSY on tour. The generational exchange offers a fascinating glimpse into how the indie landscape has shifted. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the evolution of indie music and the challenges of maintaining artistic authenticity in a changing industry. IN THIS EPISODE:  (00:00) Intro: LaunchLeft podcast with Rain Phoenix (05:03) Early 2000s indie music scene and industry changes (10:27) Alec's approach to independence and a discussion about self-sabotage (15:00) CHYSY’s approach to music videos (20:55) Alec's songwriting process and lyrical influences (31:40) Knifeplay is launched and TJ joins the conversation (34:58) TJ's musical influences and background (37:37) Using social media as musicians in a digital landscape (43:24) TJ's balanced approach to using social media (48:40) Authenticity and sustainability in music careers KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Maintaining artistic integrity can be challenging but is crucial for genuine connection with audiences. The music industry has seen significant changes, making it harder for new artists to break through. Collaboration can be a way for artists to promote each other and expand their audience. Social media presents both opportunities and challenges for musicians striving to balance authenticity with promotion. A heady blend of leftfield pop and melodic, exuberant indie rock, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is unquestionably among the finest and most influential independent releases of the 2000s. The celebration officially gets underway with the premiere of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s original 2004 version of the fan favorite, “Heavy Metal”. The newly remixed and mastered track was recently discovered among the original project files and captures what Clap Your Hands Say Yeah founder and frontman Alec Ounsworth calls “a special moment in time – a young group of guys all piling into one hotel room to wake up and go to a real studio (!) to try to come up with something special just for the fun of it.”  In addition to the digital anniversary release featuring the original version of “Heavy Metal,” a special deluxe reissue will arrive on limited edition vinyl LP in early 2025, released on CYHSY’s own label via Secretly Distribution, the defiantly independent home to over two decades of Alec Ounsworth’s music. Knifeplay is a band that eludes definition, existing somewhere between the nihilistic detachment of shoegaze and the emotional honesty of folk songwriting. Originally a solo bedroom recording project of Tj Strohmer’s, they’ve made a slow and careful shift into a collaborative, production focused, studio recorded band. Through their ever-expanding genre palette, range of fidelities, and long list of collaborators runs a unique current that ties everything together. Informed by his experiences living in Philadelphia and their contrast with his rural southern Maryland upbringing, Strohmer’s sometimes straightforward, sometimes dreamlike, but always philosophical lyrics feature scenes of darkness from many different aspects of life. He deals with themes of death, drugs, heartbreak, abuse, and self-destruction, all expressed through a delicate vocal style, which, combined with the band’s lush orchestral instrumentation gives a beautiful lightness to the heavy subject matter. Since their 2017 debut of home-recorded EPs, Knifeplay have earned a dedicated cult following through acclaimed debut album Pearlty (2019) and a lengthy B-Sides Compilation (2020), all either self-released or through small run tape labels. In 2021 they entered the studio with producer Jeff Zeigler, known for his work with Kurt Vile, Nothing, The War on Drugs, and more, first producing the Hurt Someone EP (Born Losers Records) before recording their upcoming sophomore full-length, Animal Drowning, to be released via Topshelf Records on October 19, 2022.
