Indie rock pioneers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are celebrating 20 years with a special reissue. But what's the real story behind their unconventional rise to fame? In this episode of LaunchLeft, host Rain Phoenix and CYHSY frontman Alec Ounsworth, meet at Licorice Pizza in Studio City to unpack the band's journey from DIY darlings to indie rock icons. They touch on CYHSY's decision to remain unsigned. It wasn't just about rebellion, it was a commitment to artistic integrity that shaped their entire career. Ounsworth candidly discusses how his stubborn streak both helped and hindered the band's trajectory. Twenty years on, Alec reflects on how his views on collaboration and the music industry have matured. Alec then launches the up-and-coming Philly band Knifeplay, who'll be supporting CYHSY on tour. The generational exchange offers a fascinating glimpse into how the indie landscape has shifted. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the evolution of indie music and the challenges of maintaining artistic authenticity in a changing industry. IN THIS EPISODE:  (00:00) Intro: LaunchLeft podcast with Rain Phoenix (05:03) Early 2000s indie music scene and industry changes (10:27) Alec's approach to independence and a discussion about self-sabotage (15:00) CHYSY’s approach to music videos (20:55) Alec's songwriting process and lyrical influences (31:40) Knifeplay is launched and TJ joins the conversation (34:58) TJ's musical influences and background (37:37) Using social media as musicians in a digital landscape (43:24) TJ's balanced approach to using social media (48:40) Authenticity and sustainability in music careers KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Maintaining artistic integrity can be challenging but is crucial for genuine connection with audiences. The music industry has seen significant changes, making it harder for new artists to break through. Collaboration can be a way for artists to promote each other and expand their audience. Social media presents both opportunities and challenges for musicians striving to balance authenticity with promotion. A heady blend of leftfield pop and melodic, exuberant indie rock, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is unquestionably among the finest and most influential independent releases of the 2000s. The celebration officially gets underway with the premiere of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s original 2004 version of the fan favorite, “Heavy Metal”. The newly remixed and mastered track was recently discovered among the original project files and captures what Clap Your Hands Say Yeah founder and frontman Alec Ounsworth calls “a special moment in time – a young group of guys all piling into one hotel room to wake up and go to a real studio (!) to try to come up with something special just for the fun of it.”  In addition to the digital anniversary release featuring the original version of “Heavy Metal,” a special deluxe reissue will arrive on limited edition vinyl LP in early 2025, released on CYHSY’s own label via Secretly Distribution, the defiantly independent home to over two decades of Alec Ounsworth’s music. Knifeplay is a band that eludes definition, existing somewhere between the nihilistic detachment of shoegaze and the emotional honesty of folk songwriting. Originally a solo bedroom recording project of Tj Strohmer’s, they’ve made a slow and careful shift into a collaborative, production focused, studio recorded band. Through their ever-expanding genre palette, range of fidelities, and long list of collaborators runs a unique current that ties everything together. Informed by his experiences living in Philadelphia and their contrast with his rural southern Maryland upbringing, Strohmer’s sometimes straightforward, sometimes dreamlike, but always philosophical lyrics feature scenes of darkness from many different aspects of life. He deals with themes of death, drugs, heartbreak, abuse, and self-destruction, all expressed through a delicate vocal style, which, combined with the band’s lush orchestral instrumentation gives a beautiful lightness to the heavy subject matter. Since their 2017 debut of home-recorded EPs, Knifeplay have earned a dedicated cult following through acclaimed debut album Pearlty (2019) and a lengthy B-Sides Compilation (2020), all either self-released or through small run tape labels. In 2021 they entered the studio with producer Jeff Zeigler, known for his work with Kurt Vile, Nothing, The War on Drugs, and more, first producing the Hurt Someone EP (Born Losers Records) before recording their upcoming sophomore full-length, Animal Drowning, to be released via Topshelf Records on October 19, 2022.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a lively chat between Philly friends Kurt Vile and Francie Medosch. Medosch is the singer and main creative force behind the band Florry, which exists in the same sonic universe as Courtney Barnett and the currently exploding MJ Lenderman—loose, rocking, a little bit jammy, a little bit indie, and frequently catchy as hell. The Lenderman connection makes even more sense when you realize that the upcoming Florry album was recorded with help from Colin Miller, who plays in Lenderman's band and has recorded music from the band Wednesday. That upcoming Florry album is called Sounds Like… and it's due out May 23 on Dear Life Records. It's a corker, kinda rambly and rockin' in all the right ways. You can pre-save and pre-order at all the usual spots. Check out the song “Hey Baby” right here. The other half of today's chat is a longtime supporter of Florry's, fellow Philadelphian Kurt Vile. Vile first came out swinging as part of the War on Drugs way back when, but pretty quickly established himself as a genius of hazy, dazed guitar songs pitched somewhere between the ‘70s squall of Neil Young and more contemporary indie-rock. As you'll hear in this chat, Vile is working—at his own pace, of course—on the follow-up to 2022's Watch My Moves. Whenever it's finished, it's sure to be intriguing, like all of his work. In this chat, Vile and Medosch talk about their shared hometown as well as the fact that Medosch recently moved to Vermont and is working in both a dispensary and a record store—kind of a perfect combo to describe her music, come to think of it. They also chat about a lot of stuff that they love, including John Prine, the recently departed Michael Hurley, and the deeply lovable Bob Odenkirk, who Vile was very excited to meet recently. Enjoy. L.A. neo-psych group, Dream Phases, share their new LP Phantom Idol on this episode. On the album, Brandon Graham says, "Phantom Idol is our third full length album that was written and recorded between 2022-2023. It has by far the most collaborative writing of any of our albums so far, as Shane, Keveen and I co-wrote about half of the tracks on the album as opposed to writing the songs individually. We initially recorded demos for all of the songs, and some extra outtakes, and then we brought those to producers Matt Schuessler (Cat Power, Kurt Vile) and Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Dr. Dog). With Matt and Rob we re-recorded everything, refining tempos and espeically the tones of the instruments. We also had the pleasure of having several guests perform on the album including Jeff Schroeder (ex-Smashing Pumpkins, Dan Gee, Marc Agostini, and Omar Medina as well as having our part time band mates Anthony Marks and Pablo Orue, who have recorded on many of our songs over the years. For the artwork we collaborated with Asuka Watanabe on the album cover and design and Scott Duffey (Toucan Tango) on all of the singles' art. The vinyl and digital release is coming out on Coconut Spaceship Records, while the tape will be released on Mutation Records. We are going to do an initial run of California and Nevada shows, with further dates later this year. Like our previous album, 'New Distractions', this new album was very much conceived as a complete album as opposed to singles compiled together.  Thematically the album deals with a good amount of self discovery and self reflection as well as personal relationships. It also continues our influence of living in Los Angeles, and our love of California in general with a healthy dose of escapism mixed in there. 'Phantom Idol' comes the closest to what we initially envisioned both sonically and performance wise, and we can't wait to share the record."

There are heavy hitters, and then there's The Dirty Three. A trio comprising violinist Warren Ellis, guitarist Mick Turner, and drummer Jim White, these Australian independent rock legends recently returned with their first album in 12 year, the aptly titled Love Changes Everything. Though they are perhaps best known for their work with artists like Nick Cave (Warren is a foundational Bad Seeds member and works with Cave in a variety of other contexts), Cat Power, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Bill Callahan, and Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, a very particular magic happens when they gather together. It's on full display on the new record, which does everything you hope a D3 record will: it rocks, it drifts, and it ventures boldly toward the unknown. That magic comes down to...well, as you'll learn in this episode, it's very tricky to pin down where magic—or love for that matter—comes from, and it only grows more elusive the more you try to name it. In which the Curmudgeons hammer one of the most perplexing "it" bands of the entire 21st Century. Arcade Fire stormed out of Montreal in 2004 with Funeral, a debut album that captured the imagination of throngs of unimaginative indie hipster d-bags. Whereas their fans and a whole bunch of fawning rock critics heard glorious art in all the band's maximal grandiosity, we just heard...noise. Lots of it. He's the owner and founder of Rizoma Liquid Creations, and he's my guest for Episode No. 119.Damon and I talked about growing up, family, heritage and culture, parenthood, collaborations, mental health, and beer, to just mention a few topics. We also talked about a few of Damon's favorite records, which were these:Sunrise over the Sea (2004), The John Butler TrioBalmorhea's Stranger (2012)Pedestrian Verse (2013), Frightened RabbitDirty Heads' Sound of Change (2014)Origin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2023), Kris Bowers*Rizoma continues to search for a location to call home here in Kansas City, and -- while that search continues -- Damon has been selected to participate in the Crafted for Action Conference in Atlanta next month. And if I may speak on behalf of Damon, he needs your contribution to see this important step in the process through. If you trust me when I say that Damon is good people, or if you enjoyed our conversation here on the podcast, or if you're just a kind/giving person at your core, please take a moment to learn a little bit more about this portion of Damon's journey to seeing his dream through. You can do so here.It was a privilege to meet Damon and an honor to share some time with him. I appreciate you being here and supporting the podcast, and if you are able to support Damon, well I appreciate you for that, too. Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are samples from a tune called, "Bassackwards" by Kurt Vile. The track is from his 2018 release, Bottle It In (c/o Matador Records), and I'm not going to tell you that the album is a badass record, but I will tell you that Mr. Vile is a lifetime member on the Board of Badassery. So take those tidbits and decide for yourself.*Damon loves the Stan Walker tune, "I AM" from this soundtrack, not necessarily the entire collection. I chose to list the soundtrack as part of his list just because I'm a dork like that and couldn't have a lone track listed all by its lonesome.

The Bones of Old New York is a new podcast from Carmine Street Guitars, a guitar shop in New York's iconic Greenwich Village which opened in 1990. The podcast is hosted by Rick Kelly and Cindy Hulej, two world renowned luthiers who make guitars from repurposed wood found in historic New York City buildings. Rick Kelly has been making guitars for over 50 years and has made Instruments for some of the world's most legendary artists including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Motley Crue, Jim Jarmusch, Allen Woody and Lenny Kaye. Cindy started working for Rick 11 years ago as his apprentice and has quickly become one of the premier guitar builders in New York making instruments for artists like Jackson Smith, Michael Imperioli and Kurt Vile. In 2018 a documentary about the shop directed by Ron Mann (Altman, Tales of Rat Fink, Grass) premiered to critical acclaim bringing international attention to Rick and Cindy. This is when they met the producer of the Bones of Old New York, Mike Guggino, who was the sound mixer on the film. They began recording at the end of 2021 and continued sporadically throughout the last 2 years having various guests come by and talk about music, art, life, New York and of course, guitars. The idea behind the podcast is simple. The listener gets to hang out in the back of the shop with Rick, Cindy and Mike while they have conversations with artists and shop regulars. It's a window into a time when Greenwich Village was full of painters, musicians, beat poets, coffee shops and counterculture freak-niks. A place where many of today's most influential artists got their start. Some of the guests in the first season include Captain Kirk Douglas of the Roots, Steve Gunn, Dylan Keefe of Marcy Playground and Lenny Kaye and many more.
