Pour le 108e épisode de Creative Mood, j'ai reçu Les Louanges, alias Vincent Roberge, pour discuter de son troisième album, Alouette, paru chez Bonsound.Dans cet épisode, on fait une vraie mise à nu, instrument par instrument, à partir des multipistes de « Au pied de la montagne (Sauvez mon âme) » et « Promis juré ». On traverse les arrangements, les textures, les idées, les couches cachées dans les chansons. On écoute aussi plusieurs maquettes, dans leur forme initiale, pour les entendre évoluer jusqu'à leur version finale. Et on termine avec une écoute des deux chansons en intégralité.Mais au-delà de l'exercice musical, cette conversation va beaucoup plus loin.Alouette, c'est un album dense, lucide, chargé. Un album qui regarde son époque en pleine face. Un commentaire social, mais aussi le snapshot d'un moment charnière dans la vie de Vincent : sa quête d'identité, son rapport au Québec, à la masculinité, au deuil, à la création, à la place qu'il occupe comme artiste.Dès « Je confirme ma présence », Vincent met le Québec au complet sur la table : le souper steak, blé d'Inde, patates, le fleuve, la souche, la nouvelle branche. C'est familier, c'est politique, c'est beau, pis criss que c'est real. J'ai été vraiment touché par cette prise de parole-là, parce que je sais à quel point ça peut faire mal de parler d'identité québécoise. En quelques lignes, il parle pas juste d'identité : il demande ce qu'on fait avec l'héritage qu'on traîne, pis ce qu'on a le courage de laisser changer.Ça faisait longtemps que je voulais rencontrer Vincent, que je voulais m'asseoir avec lui pour parler de création. Et je dois dire que cette rencontre est allée au-delà de mes attentes. Elle m'a vraiment marqué. Vincent est arrivé focus, posé, ouvert, avec une vraie envie d'aller au fond des choses. Pas juste de parler de ses chansons, mais de ce qu'elles portent. De ce qu'elles brassent en lui comme autour de lui.On parle aussi de sa rencontre avec sa copine, qui semble l'avoir profondément transformé de bien des façons. Étant fils d'immigrant, avec une identité multiple, en l'occurrence un père turc qui s'exprime principalement en anglais, c'est un lien qui m'a tout de suite interpellé. J'étais curieux de comprendre ce que cette rencontre-là avait déplacé en lui : dans son rapport à lui-même, aux autres, au Québec, à l'identité, à la place qu'il occupe comme homme et comme artiste.Je voulais aussi mieux comprendre les influences de Vincent, particulièrement quand on a parlé de « Au pied de la montagne (Sauvez mon âme) ». On a parlé de Damon Albarn, des Gorillaz, de Parliament-Funkadelic, de Marvin Gaye, de soul des années 70, de funk psychédélique. Des référents que je connais très bien, donc on a pu rentrer dans le détail, faire des liens, suivre les fils. Cette partie-là m'a vraiment permis de mieux comprendre, de mieux entendre sa musique. Je sais pas pour vous, mais moi, après cette conversation-là, je ne pourrai plus jamais écouter Les Louanges de la même façon.Considérant tout ce qui a été abordé durant notre rencontre, cet épisode s'inscrit parmi les plus belles rencontres que j'ai faites à Creative Mood. They have always been close, but the duo behind the Gorillaz sharing such an intimate experience seems nothing less than cosmically ordained. To deal with their grief, they went on an adventure to India, with it's profound acceptance of death and it's gods and reincarnations. Together, while coming to terms with their loss, they created one of the most beautiful and intimate works that Gorillaz has ever done. Some are saying it's the next Plastic Beach... 2001 veröffentlichten die Gorillaz als erste virtuelle Band ihr gleichnamiges Debütalbum. Die Masterminds hinter dem Projekt sind Blur-Sänger Damon Albarn und Comiczeichner Jamie Hewlett. Mit den Gorillaz haben Damon Albarn und Jamie Hewlett eines der innovativsten Musikprojekte aller Zeiten erschaffen – aus Frust. Entstanden ist die Idee zu dem Projekt, als die beiden WG-Kollegen Ende der 90er zusammen MTV geschaut haben und sich über die glattgebügelte Scheinwelt aus produziertem Hochglanz-Pop ärgerten. "Nichts ist da mehr echt! Und jede Fakeband könnte authentischer sein als das, was wir da sehen", so die frei übersetzte Hypothese der beiden. Also haben sie genau das gemacht. Sie haben mit den Gorillaz die erste echte Fakeband der Welt erfunden. Das musikalische Mastermind ist Damon Albarn, der mit seiner Band "Blur" bereits diverse Erfolge gefeiert hatte und eine der Ikonen des Britpop war. An seiner Seite steht sein Mitbewohner und Freund Jamie Hewlett, der sich als Comiczeichner und Co-Autor des Erfolgscomics "Tank Girl" als Künstler einen Namen gemacht hatte. Das Ziel war klar: Die Gorillaz sind ein Statement gegen die Popkultur-Scheinwelt. Die Gorillaz kritisieren das Popbusiness, während sie gleichzeitig damit spielen und erobern diese gleichzeitig – was für eine Ironie. Die (offizielle) Band Gorillaz besteht aus den vier fiktiven Charakteren Murdoch Nicalls, 2-D, Noodle und Russell – allesamt mit weitreichenden Hintergrundgeschichten, die spannend, verrückt und natürlich frei erfunden sind. Die These des Projekts: Auch wenn etwas komplett frei erfunden ist, kann es authentischer sein als existierende Bands und Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut. Denn hier wird niemandem etwas vorgemacht. Mit den Gorillaz haben Damon Albarn und Jamie Hewlett nicht nur eine Band aus dem Nichts erschaffen, sondern gleich ein ganzes Universum drumherum. Die Fiktion hört nicht bei der Musik und bei den Videos auf. Es gibt mit "Rise Of The Ogre" eine Bandbiografie, Interviews mit den Bandmitgliedern und vieles mehr. Elton John hat Damon Albarn, den musikalischen Kopf hinter der Band, als "interessantesten britischen Musiker" bezeichnet. Spannend ist dabei vor allem, dass es im Gorillaz-Kosmos – im Rahmen des Debütalbums und darüber hinaus – unglaublich viel zu erkunden gibt für die Fans. Es gibt viele Details und Muster, die immer wiederkehren und weitergetragen werden – diese zu entdecken macht unglaublich viel Spaß. Besonders häufig finden sich auf dem Debütalbum zum Beispiel auch Filmreferenzen zu Klassikern der Kinogeschichte. Sei es zu den Italowestern, im Song "Clint Eastwood", dem bekanntesten Stück des Albums, oder zu Horrorfilmklassikern wie "The Shining" oder "Freitag der 13.". Mit dem Debütalbum der Gorillaz haben Jamie Hewlett und Damon Albarn der damaligen Popwelt den Spiegel vorgehalten und gezeigt, dass man für Authentizität nichtmal echte Menschen braucht. J'ai rencontré Karen à maintes reprises lors de plateaux TV, mais nous n'avions jamais le temps de discuter puisqu'il fallait s'occuper des artistes invités, et de leurs chansons. Après tout, c'était pour ça que nous étions payés, pas pour se parler. Puis je l'ai souvent recroisé dans le parc où jouaient nos descendances respectives. Karen est violoniste et chanteuse, mais pas que, elle cherche à toucher à tout. On l'appelle surtout pour ses prouesses sur cet instrument complexe à quatre cordes, qu'elle a appris de manière très académique, dès le plus jeune âge pour maintenant naviguer glorieusement dans le milieu de la musique dite "populaire". Elle joue, elle et ses accointances à cordes avec des artistes aussi variés que Michel Legrand, Brian Wilson,Vanessa Paradis, Damon Albarn ou Gim's, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns. Karen a un parcours bien different du mien, et je me suis dit que savoir d'où venaient toutes ces notes serait une excellente idée, dont acte. Bonne écoute.
