Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett — the architects of the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum band Gorillaz — are back with their 9th studio record, The Mountain. It might be the group's most personal record yet, as it follows a fictional story inspired by real events. After Damon and Jamie both lost their fathers, they decided to travel to India where they gained a new understanding of death and family. The Mountain was the result of that journey. Damon and Jamie join guest host Talia Schlanger to open up about the album and the personal loss that fuelled it.

Your weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works: don't forget - you can become a Superfan of the podcast for free – and access an extra 20 mins of show each week! This week, it's time for another interview with one of the people who make it all happen. Steve speaks to Niamh Byrne, who managed Blur, Elastica, and Turin Brakes, before founding Eleven management, which works with artists like Damon Albarn and Gorillaz – and she's also the chair of the Music Managers Forum, the global organisation that represents music managers.So... she is a great person to ask: what's it like being a manager today – and how is the role changing?(As ever, our Patreon Superfans get a bit extra - you'll hear the full unedited interview, including Niamh's thoughts on AI and the future of management.)Niamh explains to Steve how:Great management is built on trust and vision — artists need operational backing while they create, and managers must hold the long-term destination and strategy. The manager role has expanded significantly — managers now carry much of the execution workload that labels historically handled. How labels are still important — even though managers can now replicate many label functions, access to capital keeps traditional deals relevant.Manager-led campaigns are increasingly viable — teams can now run marketing, digital, data and fan strategy directly (as with upcoming Gorillaz releases).Managers are undervalued — despite delivering end-to-end commercial and operational value, compensation models often still reflect a “deal-maker only” roleAdaptability is now a survival skill — with more release paths and tools available, managers must continuously evolve and build flexible, independent-capable business models. You can read Music Ally's full report on the chat here too: https://musically.com/2026/01/26/today-managers-could-probably-do-everything-but-funding-is-really-difficult===================================As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Steve and Stuart======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Steve on X - @steve_lamacqFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

30 years ago, England's two top bands were engaged in a rivalry created by the British music press. It was initially, to illicit record sales, but after a few remarks from the bands, it became personal. Blur and Oasis traded barbs, while bkth bands recorded their best work. these are select tracks from the two leaders of 1990's Britpop. Ever bought an album just because you should love it... only to file it under "respect, but no thanks"? This week, Andrew Culture and Dr. Sam go full chin-strokey and dive deep into the bands, albums, and entire genres that make them go, "I get it. I just don't want it." We're talking Flux of Pink Indians' sonic assaults, John Zorn's sex-jazz chaos, Minutemen's minute-long jazz-punk spasms, and yes, that unholy racket from Merzbow. Along the way we also chat about Damon Albarn's trouser-based stage antics, Janis Joplin's wardrobe malfunctions, and what happens when Rick Wakeman tries to write a stadium-rock opera about Henry VIII's wives. Seriously. It's an episode filled with love for the bold, the bizarre, and the borderline unlistenable. So grab your brandy, light your pipe, and stroke your chin in a disapproving-yet-respectful fashion. What you'll learn this episode: Why Andrew would rather chew tinfoil than listen to Merzbow again What makes Dr. Sam say "this is basically an angry Jackson Pollock painting" Who wins the battle of "I admire them, but no thanks" — Apex Twin or The Minutemen? Why Flux of Pink Indians were literally banned by the police (hint: it wasn't for being catchy) The sexy noises of John Zorn and why jazz speedrunning should be a sport Plus! Music recommendations, tangents about driving in America, dodgy cod reggae, and why you should never trust someone who plays saxophone and wears a beret.
In this episode, we dive into the slightly baffling and often hilarious world of musicians turning up in films that have absolutely nothing to do with their own music. Some do it well. Some… should've just stayed on stage. From Joe Strummer's pigeon-themed songwriting to Damon Albarn's dodgy gangster role, we shine a flashlight on cinema's most unexpected rock star cameos. Expect righteous rambling, questionable facts, and a whole lot of chaos as Andrew and Dr. Sam chew over: Flea appearing in Back to the Future II as a race-happy chancer Joe Strummer pretending a traffic cone is a megaphone David Bowie's aggressively tight trousers in Labyrinth Placebo showing up in Velvet Goldmine dressed like sexy peacocks Tom Waits being better at acting than most actual actors Tim Armstrong from Rancid randomly playing a tramp in The X-Files And that time a song was written just to impress a member of Bananarama Also in this episode: We slag off Spotify for kicking us off their platform, complain about camping at festivals (again), and attempt to remember what the word "railway" sounds like without sounding like we've joined the Bullingdon Club. This one's for the cinephile who loves music, or the punk who accidentally sat through Straight to Hell thinking it was a Clash documentary. Subscribe, tune in, and remember: just because you're in a band doesn't mean you should be in a film. «Is» ist das beste My Morning Jacket-Album seit Jahren. +++ PLAYLIST +++ · 22:56 – ANWAY von FROWN LINE · 22:52 – PECKHAM RYE von MONTE MAI · 22:48 – YOU GOT TIME AND I GOT MONEY von SMERZ · 22:43 – PURE LOVE von DJ KOZE FEAT. Send us a textStepping into the animated world of Gorillaz's "Demon Days," two passionate music fans embark on a track-by-track exploration of the groundbreaking 2005 album that cemented the virtual band's place in music history. The conversation delves deep into the fictional band members—2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs—examining how their elaborate backstories contribute to the album's mystique. As each song unfolds, from the haunting intro through chart-toppers like "Feel Good Inc." and "Dirty Harry," our hosts react in real-time, discovering new layers and connections within Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's ambitious creation.Beyond the infectious singles, this episode highlights what makes "Demon Days" a true concept album. The duo unpacks its diverse musical influences—spanning hip-hop, electronic, rock, and world music—while noting the contributions from collaborators like De La Soul, MF DOOM, and Dennis Hopper. Their analysis reveals the album's environmental themes, technological commentary, and spiritual questions that prove increasingly prescient almost two decades later. What emerges is a celebration of artistic vision that challenges musical boundaries. From the apocalyptic narrative of "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" to the Beach Boys-inspired harmonies closing the album, listeners gain fresh appreciation for both the hits and overlooked album cuts. By the final segment, where both hosts share their personal top three non-hit tracks, you'll want to experience Gorillaz's masterpiece with newly opened ears.Whether you're a longtime Gorillaz fan or discovering their work for the first time, this deep dive captures why "Demon Days" remains a landmark achievement in modern music—where animation, storytelling, and sonic innovation create something truly extraordinary.Support the show
Do the charts have the same relevance they once did? Annie and Nick discuss the potential reasons why there are no UK artists in the annual global top 10 for the first time since 2003. Elsewhere, Kate Bush is one of a thousand musicians behind a silent album to protest the government's proposed changes to copyright law. Should we be worried about artists having their identities stolen, or should we embrace change? As sinister autocrats stroke Persian cats in shark-pooled underground bunkers, their bony fingers reaching for the nuclear button, we shake another Vodka Martini and reflect on the week's events, among them … … Amazon buys Bond: but isn't the essence of 007 its droll and unimpressible Britishness? … and haven't the lunatics taken over the asylum? Can you still invent unhinged fantasy villains with real life versions in the Kremlin and White House? … why a Jam reunion would never have worked. … when did ‘cool' change from meaning exotic and unconventional to being just like everyone else? And why do we picture the concept of ‘cool' in black and white? … in stout defence of the pilloried record reviewer! … why the Olympics was payday for Justine Frischmann. ... when Johnny Cash was on the Muppet Show and was photographed with Richard Nixon. … how come no-one complains about old online reviews but they do if they were physically printed? … how Lonnie Donegan made a fortune from Nights In White Satin. … hurrah for the silencing of the Pedicab boombox! … newspaper sellers, milkmen, shifty ‘hot goods' vendors: whatever happened to the street cries of London? … plus birthday guest Paul Monaghan and rock stars who were architects – Art Garfunkel, Ice Cube, Pete Briquette, Chris Lowe, Ralf Hutter …– and teaching Damon Albarn and Justine Frischmann.Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. TW: miscarriage and pregnancy loss You'll probably have heard of James Blunt. And if you haven't, you've almost definitely heard his most famous song, You're Beautiful. There was a time in the early 2000s that it was EVERYWHERE. And that's because James Blunt was absolutely huge. His debut 2004 album, Back To Bedlam, was the biggest-selling album of the decade in the UK, shifting over 12 million copies. I know!! TWELVE MILLION. He has released another six albums since then, every one of them a top 10 hit, winning two Brit Awards and two Ivor Novellos along the way. But Blunt faced an astonishing cultural backlash for his ubiquity - eventually choosing to fight back in his own words on Twitter, where he rapidly became known for his acerbic put-downs and self-deprecating humour. He joins me to talk about the ‘honour' of being a ‘one-hit wonder', his rejection by every single major record label and his failure to win any Grammys, despite being nominated for five in one night. We also talk about his friendship with the late Carrie Fisher, whether he bears a grudge against any of the musicians who slagged him off (looking at you, Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher), the absurdity of fame and - in a moving exchange - the male experience of miscarriage. At points, his humour was so dry it took me a couple of seconds to realise he'd made a joke. Listening back, I can confirm I find him utterly hilarious. Back To Bedlam is about to be released as a remastered 20th anniversary edition. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you!
