Slap bang in the middle of their Aus/NZ tour, we caught up with The Murder Capital! Joining Luke Scanlan in conversation is bassist, Gabriel Blake. After waiting years to finally play to fans in the region, Gabriel speaks of what it means to give fans a taste of tunes from across their three albums: When I Have Fears, Gigi's Recovery and Blindness Plus, why he thinks albums – also referred to as ‘records' – can be taken as a true record of your life at the time of release. Find out what it was like to step up a gear and work with Grammy-winning producer, John Congleton. The guy has only worked with global names such as Phoebe Bridgers, Nelly Furtado, The War on Drugs, Bono, Sigur Ros, Bombay Bicycle Club… no big deal, right?! Gabriel opens up on the moment that Irish music is having right now, with The Murder Capital and Fontaines DC both touring the APAC region in 2025. Plus, he gives his thoughts on the pride in Irishness emanating from KNEECAP and what it was like to play alongside them at festivals in their early days. And…. The Murder Capital's early days. What was it like to fly the post-punk flag and burst onto the scene at the same time as Fontaines and shame? A huge episode. One you cannot miss!
On 3 June 2024, Synnovis, a provider of pathology services to the NHS in London, detected the first stages of a ransomware attack. The ransomware quickly spread through Synnovis' networks, encrypting systems and stealing sensitive data. Not for the first time, a ransomware attack had become a matter of life and death. The attack, which was later claimed by Qilin, a Russian-speaking cybercriminal gang, was a stark example of how cybercrime has become a national security threat. Attacks against hospitals, schools and businesses of all shapes and sizes have normalised what should be intolerable: cybercriminals, in many cases harboured by hostile states, regularly disrupting and extorting victims, causing misery in the process and creating disorder for the UK economy and society. To help us understand this challenge, and as part of our ongoing series of episodes featuring top experts from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Arthur was joined by Jamie MacColl, a Research Fellow in Cyber and Tech at RUSI. Jamie's research focuses on the national security implications of cybercrime, including the relationships between hostile states and cybercriminals. He has given evidence on ransomware on more than one occasion to the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy and also represents RUSI at the Counter Ransomware Initiative, a multilateral grouping of more than 80 countries committed to combating ransomware. Prior to working at RUSI, Jamie worked as a cyber threat intelligence analyst in the private sector. When not working on cybercrime, he is the guitarist in the British band Bombay Bicycle Club. They discuss the current state of ransomware, its scale and impact, the role played by rogue states such as Russia and North Korea, and the reasons for the lack of coordinated international progress in combating the issue. Finally, as Jamie and Arthur order the disorder, Jamie proposes moving our response to ransomware from the current failing law enforcement model, to an intelligence and counter-terrorism led approach. Formed in North London, Bombay Bicycle Club is the sound of four best friends finding joy and savoring the connection in making music together and experimenting. They think of themselves as a genre-less band (The Independent), “not bound down by genre in a way that a lot of our contemporaries were”. With the 2023 release of My Big Day, and an EP called Fantasies, both of which feature a host of guest vocalists, it's clear that they're still freely mixing sounds and cover a lot of ground, sonically. Bombay Bicycle Club plays an unplugged set in-studio. Set list: 1. Turn The World On 2. Diving 3. Luna
Today I'm joined by Ed Nash, bassist of UK indie heroes Bombay Bicycle Club, down the line from North London to chat about Kurt Vile's modern classic 2011 album, 'Smoke Ring for My Halo'. Ed talks about discovering the album on tour in Australia, how it became the soundtrack of BBC's breakthrough period, listening to it on repeat on tour, the sonic space and soundscape of the album, Vile's sophisticated and distinctive guitar style, how Vile disguises the sophistication of his music with his 'slacker rock' image, and how the album influenced Ed's approach to guitar, arrangements and lyrics in the years since.
Singer-songwriter Axel Flóvent is an alternative/indie artist from Iceland, ready to release his latest album 'Away From This Dance' June 2024. Born and raised in the Northern fishing village of Húsavík, singer-songwriter Axel has recently supported artists such as The Paper Kites, Juníus Meyvant in Europe, and Radical Face in North America. Axel recorded his first EP, Forest Fires back in 2015 in Iceland, where the songs were written under the influence of everything from Bon Iver to Bombay Bicycle Club. It yielded an international phenomenon in the form of the title track, generating over 40 million streams. At 19 years old, he moved to Amsterdam. He admits, "I was supposed to be in a music mecca, but I never left the apartment." So, he traded Amsterdam for the seaside town of Brighton when Axel felt a strong pull to return to Iceland and chose to plant roots in the capital Reykjavík. We met up with Axel in Austin, during SXSW 2024 where we spoke about topics like longevity in the music industry, comparisons to musical peers, the forgotten art of music videos, the art scene in Iceland and more.

John sits down with indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club to talk about their sixth studio album ‘My Big Day'. Bombay Bicycle Club are a four-piece band from London, that broke onto the indie music scene with their genre defining debut album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose' in 2009. Since then they have been releasing a steady stream of music which has been met with high critical acclaim, earning them an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Prize nominations. Chatting with band members Jack Steadman and Ed Nash, the three cover a range of topics including the inspiration behind the album, their use of sampling in their music, how over-thinking can negatively influence the production process, and their collaboration with music legends Damon Albarn, Paul Epworth & Chaka Khan.
Join us for an exciting episode as we sit down with Bombay Bicycle Club to delve into their latest release, 'My Big Day'. With standout guest appearances from musical icons Damon Albarn, Chaka Khan, and the captivating Holly Humberstone, this album is yet another testament to the band's unique fusion of indie and electronic soundscapes. As broadcast October 23, 2023 with a boatload of shiny new goods and cellophane scents. Tonight, as we are wont to do, it's time to unwrap what's been dropped from the audio multiverse and see what we liked, starting with our dear friend out of San Diego Scoobert Doobert, whose new album MOB just dropped on Friday. We also had new jawnies from Haley Johnsen, Kurt Vile, and BADBADNOTGOOD to take us through hour one in style. Part 3 the big new tunes out this week had some decent selections, with Sampha's new album Lahai being a notable new record (and the artist's first in years), just out days ago. For the final stanza we had more from the local Korean realms to finish things off with heart signs, big highlights being Say Sue Me's latest single (what a banner year they've had), along with Balming Tiger's new record that slapped down to earth on Friday. #feelthegravityNew Muses Monday10/23/2023Tracklist (st:rt)New Faves - Part 1 & 2Part 1 (00:00)Scoobert Doobert – Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)Pelicat – Still AroundQ – HelloKevin Abstract – What Should I Do?BADBADNOTGOOD feat Charlotte Day Wilson – SleeperBombay Bicycle Club feat Damon Albarn – Heaven Part 2 (31:30)Haley Johnsen – That Ain't LoveDallas Tamaira – LevelsJapan, Man – Why Do People ChangeBeabadoobee feat Laufey – A Night to RememberKurt Vile – Another good year for the rosesLEENALCHI – Ultimate Prescription Part 3 – Poppin' Off! Steven Wilson, Roland Orzabal, Lucy Rose and Andy Partridge talk about the effect of fan expectations on the creative process, whether the world needs any more new music, and if “retro mania” is stopping rock music from evolving. Born in London and raised in Hemel Hempstead in the UK, Steven Wilson developed an interest in music as a child and was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. His dad built him a multi-track tape machine when he was 12, which allowed him to start experimenting with sound. He formed two bands in 1986, No Man and Porcupine Tree, both of which came to define much of his career. His music covers everything from rock, to ambient, to electro pop, and he's worked with Elton John, Guns N' Roses, XTC, Pendulum, Yes, Marillion, and Black Sabbath. He's just released his seventh solo album, The Harmony Codex. Roland Orzabal is a British musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and author. He is best known for co-founding of one of the most influential bands from the 80s, Tears for Fears. British singer-songwriter Lucy Rose started out performing with indie act Bombay Bicycle Club before becoming a successful solo artist in her own right. More recently she's worked with Paul Weller, and she's just finished her new album. Andy Partridge is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who, as a founding member of cult rock band XTC, many call the godfather of Britpop.

BILBAO - "Get Up!" from the 2022 album Shake Well on [PIAS]. Like the beautiful city in Spain where they derived their band name, Bilbao create sunny, summery songs, showcased on their debut LP Shake Well. It's hard to believe then that the quartet themselves actually hail from Germany. "There is the 'Bilbao' song by Yves Montand, a chanson that my parents used to play," bassist Jannes Eschrich shares about their moniker. "He tells of the place of longing Bilbao. Our band should also be a place of longing, a place that we conjure up in rainy Hamburg and that you can dream of." Bilbao came together after the four friends attended the Reeperbahn Festival in 2019, writing and recording their first EP within a month. Despite the pandemic, they kept the momentum going, resulting in their first full-length, released in early 2022. Calling to mind bands like Bombay Bicycle Club and Two Door Cinema Club (and other groups that don't have "club" in their band name), Bilbao suceed in transporting you to sunnier shores with their buoyant, upbeat tunes. This week's Songs of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, showcasing artists playing at this year's ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) Festival. ESNS is a European new music showcase festival and conference committed to presenting and supporting the best new and emerging artists. This year's festival will take place January 18-21, 2023 in Groningen, NL.
