My guest today is Randy LeRoy a musician, engineer, A&R, and mastering engineer in Nashville TN and Takoma Park Maryland. A graduate of the recording program at Middle Tennessee State University (also my alma mater) he got his first gig cutting publishing demos on Nashville's “Music Row” in CBS Song's basement studio, editing radio spots on ¼” tape for a company called Starliners and hanging out in small studios around town.  Eventually, he was offered a job with CBS Records as an A&R coordinator and spent time in high-end facilities like Emerald, Stargem, The Dog House, Masterfonics, Sound Shop, Treasure Isle, Studio 19, and even legendary studios like The Record Plant in LA while working for CBS. Randy worked with a variety of the label's many noteworthy artists such as Ray Benson, George Jones, Ricky Van Shelton, Tammy Wynette, Vern Gosdin, and Exile. In 1988 Glenn Meadows at Masterfonics offered him a job as his mastering assistant where Randy learned how to cut reference lacquers, assemble and quality checking masters, and help out engineers during mixing, while mastering small projects on his own.  At Masterfonics he would work alongside notable country music producers like Jimmy Bowen, Tony Brown, James Stroud, Jerry Crutchfield, and Barry Beckett. And in 1991 Randy left Masterfonics to start his own mastering studio, Final Stage Mastering located in Sound Stage Studios on Music Row in Nashville where he worked on more Grammy nominated and winning projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s such as Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right… but Three Do, Allison Brown's Fair Weather, Nappy Root's Humdinger, and Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song, to name a few.  In June of 2010, Randy left Nashville to become the Senior Mastering Engineer at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD where he has mastered some of the biggest names in country, bluegrass, folk, Americana, and gospel such as Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Jamey Johnson, Dale Ann Bradley, Colin Hay, Kelsey Waldon,  Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Gold City, and John Cowan.  including the 2020 Grammy Winning, Michael Cleveland's “Tall Fiddler” and two other Grammy nominated albums in the Best Bluegrass Album category. Paul Cardall's roots run deep in Utah not only with his heritage, family, and friends, but Utah is where he built one of the music industry's most successful independent record labels, Stone Angel Music. Why would the pianist uproot and move to Nashville, Tennessee in the pinnacle of his career? He knew nobody in Nashville, except one person. From New Orleans to Graceland, a stop at Johnny Cash's grave, walking broadway, Paul takes listeners inside the world of the music business as he shares his remarkable journey creating the Utah record label, signing artists, producing the Worth of Souls project, and taking a road trip with his wife that changed everything. ABOUT PAUL CARDALLSteinway & Sons considers him one of the world's finest pianists. Dove Award-winning musician, composer, and producer, Paul Cardall's music has been streamed on platforms worldwide 3 billion times. With 11 No. 1 Billboard albums, 30 million monthly listeners and 3 million subscribed fans on social media, Paul is one of the biggest selling recording artists of our time.Paul was born with essentially half a heart and before his first day was finished, surgeons had cut into his infant body to save his life. He would spend virtually all of his life in and out of hospitals and recovering from surgeries. He received a heart transplant in 2009. Living with congenital heart disease has helped Paul understand the trauma imposed, particularly on a young person and their families. Cardall has made it his life's mission to create and share piano music that is healing both physically and emotionally. Two of the many projects he's involved with include partnering with the The Ryan Seacrest Foundation to donate keyboards to children's hospitals nationwide. Cardall has established scholarships for students affected by medical bills associated with congenital heart disease because he believes in getting an education regardless of terminal diagnosis.Earlier this year Cardall released a music project titled The Broken Miracle, featuring special guests including David Archuleta, Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees), Ty Herndon, Rachel Yamagata, Thompson Square, Matt Hammitt and many others. The Broken Miracle album chronicles his life dealing with congenital heart disease, through his transplant 12 years ago.The pianist recently released two unique versions of his much-anticipated upcoming instrumental project December.  Both versions of the album feature 14 tracks in a minimalist classical style, and all are original compositions by Cardall, with the exception of “Hush, Little Baby.” The pianist takes listeners on a journey from the rise of a new moon in September through the New Year. All Heart with Paul Cardall is sponsored by doTERRA, whose products are designed to offer hope and healing. Jay Stringer is a therapist, author, and public speaker. He guides men and women to overcome unwanted sexual behaviors, and to discover how their story is shaping unwanted sexual behavior or betrayal trauma. He grew up as the son of a Protestant minister in the Presbyterian church, holds a master of Divinity and masters of Counseling Psychology, and is an ordained minister. Steven Shields, ACMHC CET1, is a therapist who acts as a guide to help others heal from trauma and addiction. As founder of Unashamed Unafraid, a non-profit organization, he hosts the podcast that shares hope for sexual addiction recovery. Unashamed funds scholarships for people to go to retreats and receive therapy. Steve works in his private practice in Salt Lake City, at OnSite in Nashville Tennessee, and at the Oaks in San Diego California doing trauma intensives and workshops. His favorite event to speak at is the WarriorHeart Bootcamp every year. Steve is unofficially the biggest Leading Saints and “KF” fan! In this podcast episode, Kurt and co-host Steve speak with Jay about how leaders can best provide help and guidance to those who have been affected by unwanted sexual behaviors. Jay Stringer Steve Shields Highlights 6:15 How can leaders help members with sexual brokenness? Leaders should stop trying to ‘manage' the problem but try to help the member find the core problem. 8:10 Unwanted sexual behavior is a roadmap to healing, not a life sentence to sexual shame or sexual addition. 9:30 Leaders need to listen to the stories and experiences that are behind the unwanted behavior. 13:30 Invite people to take authorship and authority over their unwanted behaviors. It's so much more than ripping out their behavior from their life. Behaviors and addictions come from somewhere much deeper. 17:00 Many people turn to unhealthy sexual behavior or porn because they lack purpose. 17:45 How can a leader create space to listen? Stories are what change the human heart. Stop the practical suggestions because they are not going to work. 20:10 Jay gives a list of questions that can help leaders in interviews. These questions will lead to stories and help the member connect the dots between the current unwanted sexual behavior and the past pain or underlying story. 22:30 You don't have to be a therapist but a safe place for people to share their stories. People don't always need suggestions but someone that has compassion for them. 30:00 How do you help members come to you to confess and talk about the problems they are having? 34:15 Shame convinces people to stay silent about their sexual brokenness. Leaders need to normalize talking about sex and porn. 40:45 Share your scars, not your wounds, when you are in leadership. Be vulnerable to share your scars and experiences too. God wants us to share our stories. 42:30 This is not just a men's issue but a human issue. Many women are also viewing pornography and having affairs. 47:30 While connection and community are very important to recovery and healing it's also very important to take time alone. You have to learn to sit with yourself and not just try to distract yourself all the time. 53:00 How can we find the right community? We had the pleasure of interviewing The Violent over Zoom video!  This is the story of The Violent. As 2019 came to a close, rock band Red Sun Rising announced an indefinite hiatus as its members pursued other opportunities. Soon after, the world as we knew it sunk into the deep hole of the pandemic. The time in lockdown helped to fuel the creative process for singer and songwriter Mike Protich, who was in search of a new creative release and to stretch his musical muscles. He recruited two members from his former band — Patrick Gerasia on drums and David McGarry on guitar. The threesome began to work remotely during the initial lockdown and quarantine. They embarked on virtual sessions using home studio setups and collaborating with producer Albert DiFiore in Nashville Tennessee. With roots in rock music, the three began to find fresh and invigorating ways to utilize their musicianship beyond the standard iteration of rock bands. They embraced experimentation by blending the familiar elements of rock music with a newfound appreciation for electronic and digital sounds. This process was elevated due to the fact that the members were unable to physically be in a room together to play.Out of this process, The Violent was born. It is truly a child of this chaotic pandemic — both sonically and lyrically. We want to hear from you! That's how I knew I wanted to be an artist. I was like, “I love every part of this process, so maybe I should do this forever.“ 15:31 “Steady'' was actually a song that we wrote over Zoom during the first week of COVID stuff happening, just when we were needing something steady. I think everybody was feeling that way. So, we wanted to capture that in the recording and the mixing in the master of like, “there's something we're needing here and we're needing an energy behind it to express that.” 20:27 I think actually, it can be kind of dangerous if we're like, “the process has to be like this.” Because, it just limits so much of the creativity and, so much of the fun, and child likeness and discovery of it being whatever it's gonna be for that song.  45:53 I think stuff like that to people are like, “I need an hour or two hours to do that, and I don't have that much time.” That's not true. Well, you can do something in five minutes, that will totally change the rest of your day. 48:25 I always think about, if I could go back and talk to myself at the beginning of college, maybe that would be the time I would need somebody to just tell me to just chill out, because it's gonna be okay, it's gonna work out fine. It's gonna take some time, probably more years than you think, but if you stick it out, things will work out and you'll meet your people and find your way.  Timestamps:   01:25 Introducing Natalie Layne 04:08 Natalie tells about her childhood and where she came from originally 05:55 How was Natalie's experience in Belmont University? 08:24 Natalie's favorite part of her creative process 10:55 Listen to “Steady” by Natalie Layne 13:32 Natalie shares what she felt when she first mixed and played back “Steady.” 16:36 Natalie takes us to the studio during the production of “Steady.”  20:45 Natalie talks about her family and her church experiences in leading worship. 24:21 Is Natalie focused on Christian music or does she also do secular songs? 25:40 The process of songwriting where it reveals the truth of the song later. 28:13 Listen to “Something Good” by Natalie Layne. 31:41 The story behind “Something Good” 34:18 Natalie shares how her process is when it comes to co-writing. 36:49 Natalie's day-to-day habits and what her schedule looks like, and her most appreciated asset on how to get creative. 41:34 Natalie's take on journaling and vision boards. 42:50 What gives Natalie joy during down time outside of music? 46:57 What are Natalie's goals, aspirations and what is she looking forward to most in the future? 48:20 Natalie's advice to the young singer, songwriters, and musicians who are struggling. 50:49 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor   Spotify Playlist:   Check out the new format of our dHarmic rising stars Spotify playlists.
