John is joined by Kae Tempest and Fraser T. Smith to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album “Self-Titled”. Kae Tempest is an English recording artist and author. He began his career performing at open mic nights around London, quickly gaining a reputation for his powerful lyrical performances blending rap and spoken word poetry. Between 2008 and 2012 he toured internationally with his band Sound of Rum, launching a solo career with debut album ‘Everybody Down' in 2014. It and second album ‘Let Them Eat Chaos', released in 2015, were both nominated for the Mercury Prize. Kae has since released three further solo albums, including BRIT Award-nominated ‘The Line Is A Curve'. Kae is widely recognised as one of the UK alternative scene's most essential voices, acclaimed for his exceptional lyricism and acute social commentary. Both are particularly evident on his fifth studio album, ‘Self Titled', released earlier this year. ‘Self-Titled' is Kae's first collaboration with multi-award winning UK producer, songwriter and musician Fraser T. Smith. The trio sit down at Fraser's studio, Utopia, where the album was written and recorded, to discuss developing creative harmony working together for the first time, the process of building a song using ProTools, the influence of drum textures and bass sounds on the record, how one creative choice can completely change the direction of a track and much more. Our guest today on the podcast is the legendary UK artist M.I.A. — a Grammy, Academy, and Mercury Prize-nominated musician who first burst onto the scene in 2005 with her groundbreaking debut Arular. This very special bonus episode was recorded live at Harvest Rock Festival in Adelaide. Over the past two decades, M.I.A. has released six genre-defying records that blend politics, identity, and personal truth, performed at the Super Bowl, and created one of the most defining songs of the 21st century, Paper Planes. Back in Australia for the first time since 2019, she's performing at Harvest Rock and a handful of headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney. In this episode, recorded backstage at the festival, we chat with M.I.A. about her lasting influence on global music, the return of indie sleaze, the energy of festival crowds versus headline shows, and how she first discovered her passion for songwriting.M.I.A. : Instagram / SpotifyBuy tickets to M.I.A.'s remaining Aussie tour dates hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

One of the most revered and prolific British classical musicians, Thomas Adès made his name with his 1995 opera Powder Her Face, written when he was just 24 years old. His orchestral composition Asyla was nominated for the Mercury Prize for album of the year in 1999. Recordings of his opera The Tempest and, more recently, his score for the ballet The Dante Project have both won Grammy Awards. His ten symphonic works, three operas and numerous chamber pieces are performed all round the world. In 2024 Adès was presented with the Royal Philharmonic Society's prestigious Gold Medal, previous recipients of which include Stravinsky, Brahms and Elgar.Thomas Adès talks to John Wilson about the influence of his family, including his art historian mother who is an expert in surrealism. Through her he was introduced to the surrealist artists, the films of Luis Buñuel and met the painter Francis Bacon. His grandmother introduced him to the work of T.S. Eliot as read by Sir Alec Guinness on a cassette recording, and it was some of these poems that he was to eventually set to music for his first ever composition. Adès also recalls getting to the semi-finals of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year in 1990, a watershed moment for him as it prompted him to pursue music as a composer rather than a pianist. He also cites going regularly to the English National Opera as a formative influence and talks about writing his own operas including Powder Her Face about the Duchess of Argyll, and The Exterminating Angel, based on the film by Luis Buñuel.Producer: Edwina Pitman

John is joined by Irish singer-songwriter CMAT and producer Oli Deakin, to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘EURO-COUNTRY'. CMAT, aka Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, is best known for her unique blend of country-infused pop music, which often incorporates humour and pop culture references. She released her debut album, ‘If My Wife New I'd Be Dead', in 2022, produced by longtime friend Oli Deakin. Both it and second album ‘Crazymad, For Me' were praised for their detailed lyricism. The latter was also nominated for the Mercury Prize and the Ivor Novello Award for Best Album. CMAT's third album ‘EURO-COUNTRY' was released on 29th August 2025, with Oli Deakin again on production. It has already garnered rave reviews and given CMAT her first viral Tiktok hit with ‘Take a Sexy Picture of Me'. Sitting down at Platoon Studios in London, the trio discuss how the album was inspired by growing up in Ireland in the Noughties, why CMAT's phone is her most important instrument, how online trolling inspired her viral hit ‘Take a Sexy Picture of Me' and why a three-minute ‘perfect' pop melody can be the most effective way to deliver a hard-hitting political message. Our guests today on the podcast are Wolf Alice, one of the UK's most exciting alternative bands of the past decade. Since forming in 2010, the London four-piece have released three acclaimed albums, toured the globe, and picked up major honours including the Mercury Prize and Brit Awards. This week, they return with their fourth studio album, The Clearing, leaning into 70s-inspired pop and rock, and produced by Greg Kurstin whose credits include Adele and Gorillaz. In today's episode, we are joined by Joff Oddie and Joel Amey from Wolf Alice to talk all about The Clearing, the analogue-inspired writing process, working with Greg Kurstin, and one of the standout tracks, Passenger Seat. We also look ahead to what's next — including the possibility of an Australian festival visit next February.Wolf Alice : Instagram / Spotify Find tour dates and more information about Wolf Alice hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

In 2023, he released his first full-length album, ‘When Will We Land?', which became a huge success, earning him nominations for the Mercury Prize and at the BRIT Awards. ‘Loner' released in July 2025, sees him reflect on his newfound fame and place in the industry, whilst maintaining his signature high energy beats and captivating soundscapes. Sitting down with Josh, and later with collaborator O'Flynn, the conversation dives into the album-making process. They explore Josh's sampling techniques, the ideal mindset and headspace for creating great music, and the stories behind capturing sounds from unexpected places, like the toilets of an Indian restaurant, and turning them into tracks. Tracks discussed: Still Riding, Wandering Mt. Moon, Kimpton TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. Richard Fearless is a true lifer. The DJ, producer and Death In Vegas founder sits down with Paul to reflect on 30 years of musical evolution that has taken him from the hugely influential Heavenly Social to Mercury Prize nominations, a top ten hit about a serial killer sung by Iggy Pop to his current creative renaissance, working free from industry bullshit and producing his best work in years,Growing up in remote Zambia with music-loving parents, Fearless recalls connecting with music at an early age. His path would lead through the emerging London techno scene of the late '80s and '90s, where he cut his teeth as a resident DJ alongside contemporaries like Andrew Weatherall and The Chemical Brothers before launching Death in Vegas. The conversation reveals a pivotal moment when commercial success led to a crossroads rather than continued mainstream pursuit. What emerges is the portrait of an artist who deliberately stepped away from major labels, management, and industry expectations to craft a more authentic sonic identity. His riverside studio "The Metal Box" becomes central to this narrative – an analog sanctuary where tape machines, field recordings, and environmental sounds combine to create the stripped-back, trance-inducing techno of his current work. "I make my best music when I'm digging deep within myself," he explains.Perhaps most compelling is Fearless's admission that he feels more proud of his recent, independent work than the commercial hits that brought him fame. His collaborative ventures with friend of Lost and Sound Daniel Avery and new dub-inspired night "Holy" demonstrate an artist still pushing boundaries rather than retreating into nostalgia. "I feel as excited about DJing as I was when I was 20," he confesses, signaling that artistic liberation has reinvigorated his passion.Death Mask by Death In Vegas is out now. Anohni is a singer and songwriter originally from England, who started putting out music in 2000. She's released 6 albums, and won the Mercury Prize. She's also been nominated for two Brit Awards, and an Oscar. For this episode, I talked to her about the song "4 Degrees," from her 2016 album Hopelessness. It might be strange to describe a song about climate change as an anthem, but that's what I think it is, and it feels more urgent with every passing year. It's also one of my most listened-to songs. It was produced by two of my favorite electronic musicians: Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, and Ross Birchard, aka Hudson Mohawke. I got to speak to Ross about how he started the track on his own, before it became a collaboration between the three of them. This is an episode that I've been trying to make happen since 2016. Here it is.For more info, visit songexploder.net/anohni.Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.

On the show this time, it’s the Mercury Prize winning indie-rock of English band, English Teacher. English Teacher is an English Band from Leeds and Lancashire - both in the north of England and about 2 hours apart. They sort of re-formed from an earlier version of the band in 2020, and released the single “R&B” featuring a shout out to a certain radio station in Seattle. The buzz from that got them some radio play, and they eventually released their first EP Polyawkward in 2022. Their sound has gelled into an original blend of mathy punk, spoken word, and sweeping noise-pop orchestration, in support of the mesmerizing voice of singer Lily Fontaine.
