On the show this time, it’s the Mercury Prize winning indie-rock of English band, English Teacher. English Teacher is an English Band from Leeds and Lancashire - both in the north of England and about 2 hours apart. They sort of re-formed from an earlier version of the band in 2020, and released the single “R&B” featuring a shout out to a certain radio station in Seattle. The buzz from that got them some radio play, and they eventually released their first EP Polyawkward in 2022. Their sound has gelled into an original blend of mathy punk, spoken word, and sweeping noise-pop orchestration, in support of the mesmerizing voice of singer Lily Fontaine. The autopsy begins as the pod dissects Warrington's pre-game, game and post-game experience in Vegas. Sam beats his caveat record but only 'slightly', Dennis turns his back on the big screen and Rob comes with an over-18 warning. Plus, in the week of The Brits and the planets aligning, the sitcom returns with it's very own Mercury Prize. Enjoy. www.patreon.com/whatbevan
With her third album, 'A Complicated Woman', coming out next month, I wanted to revisit my first interview with Self Esteem from 2020. It was pretty clear from the get-go that she was going to bulldoze the rules of pop, & she has - her unfiltered lyrics about female pleasure, queerness, heartbreak & more have garnered her a large & loyal fanbase, both in the UK & internationally. She has also been nominated for a Mercury Prize, appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, & has starred in the West End production of Cabaret. English Teacher's highly anticipated LP This Could Be Texas is a perfect debut, even earning the esteemed Mercury Prize. The Leeds quartet held little to nothing back across the 13 song collection. With piano refrains, guitar riffs and poetic lyrics, the album defies genre, toeing the lines of post-punk and indie-prog and everything in between. It's expansive and sonically spacious without feeling too unapproachable.Frontwoman Lily Fontaine explains, “I want this album to feel like you've gone to space, and it turns out it's almost identical to Doncaster. It's about in-betweens, it's about home, and it's about Desire Paths.”Watch English Teacher perform “Broken Biscuits” and “Albatross” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.

A wintry collage from one of 2024's breakout stars. As far as crossover electronic success goes, Barry Can't Swim's 2024 scorecard would take some beating. His singles have racked up hundreds of millions of streams, he bagged a Mercury Prize nomination and has the range to both pack out festivals as a DJ and sell out tours worldwide with a string-accented live show. Barely 12 months on from the release of debut album "When Will We Land?", it's fair to say Josh Mannie is one of the most in-demand artists working in dance and electronic music right now, with a follow-up LP nearly done, he says. For RA.968, he pulls in the complete opposite direction from any of that. Sure, there are nods to Mark Leckey and late-night jazz haunts throughout his catalogue, and the ruminative clouds drifting across his signature golden-hour glow do suggest an artist with a sharp grasp on meteorological melancholy. But a beatless collage featuring Suso Sáiz, Slow Attack Ensemble and Lorenzo Senni? It's a surprise, and a welcome one at that. Speckled with exclusive airings of brand-new ambient material, Barry Can't Swim's RA Podcast charts a path from This Mortal Coil to Ryuichi Sakamoto, with a detour through some Linkwood and Anthony Naples deep cuts we've not heard for a good while. (He even includes a Stars of the Lid favourite which namechecks Fulham's home ground, an act of mid-table grace for the diehard Everton fan). RA.968 has the crackle of a frosty night walk set to tape—a holiday gift from one of the most popular acts in the game. 'Tis the season. @barrycantswim Read more at ra.co/podcast/968
In this edition of arts24, Jennifer Ben Brahim chats with the first jazz act to ever win a Mercury Prize. Ezra Collective are one of the UK's most exciting improvisation groups, blending jazz with Afrobeat, reggae and soul. Hey folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast. We've got a really great episode for you today with musician, writer and nature campaigner, Sam Lee. If you aren't familiar with Sam, he is a Mercury Prize-nominated folk musician who has broken through to the mainstream. His latest album ‘songdreaming' earned a five-star review from The Guardian and was named Mojo's Album of the Month. When I set out to explore the relationships humans have with nature and the more-than-human world, I wasn't sure what I'd find. Many of these relationships are based on taking resources or inspiration from nature, but Sam's relationship with the nightingale is one of collaboration - across several mediums. In addition to collaborating with the nightingale on songs like ‘Bushes & Briars & Birds', which is part of the EarthPercent and Sounds Right initiative to credit and financially recognize through royalties the more-than-human world as a musical contributor, Sam runs immersive events every spring called ‘Singing With Nightingales', where seekers can join Sam and a guest musician to delve into the forest at night and sing with the nightingales. It sounds like a truly magical experience that we discuss in more depth in the podcast. Sam also wrote the book ‘The Nightingale: Notes on a Songbird' that was called the nature book of the year when it was released in 2021 and has collaborated with organizations like Emergence Magazine, Huck and On the Edge to create films around his connection with the nightingale. What's worrying is that the UK is on track to lose the nightingale entirely within the next 40 years. Future generations may not even have the chance to connect and collaborate with the nightingale, making it all the more important that we connect people with it now so we can understand what we might be losing. Make sure to visit Sam's website at samleesong.co.uk and follow him on Instagram at samleesong. He's got some amazing events coming up. Tickets are on sale today - November 27 - at for Signing with the Nightingales 2025, and he'll be performing in the coming months at venues including Edinburgh Castle and Royal Albert Hall. Huge thanks to Sam for taking time to chat. I got a bit rambly in my questions as I am a big fan of Sam's music and was just a little nervous to say the least, but I really hope you enjoy the outcome. And if you are intrigued by the idea of Earthpercent and Sounds Right, make sure to stay tuned as we'll have more artists on who have participated in this effort. You can find about more about EarthPercent at earthpercent.org and on Instagram at @earthpercent. It is really the music industry's climate foundation was was founded by the legendary musician and creative catalyst Brian Eno. And what's really cool is that anyone in music - not just the musician, so think promoters and venue artists - can work with EarthPercent to include Earth as a stakeholder in their activities. All of the money raised is distributed to fund climate solutions by an Expert Advisory panel of leading climate scientists, researchers and advisors. Episode 53: Screamadelica (Primal Scream). McCartney In Goal is the podcast that debates the great albums of pop music, using a competitive knock-out format. Today we're discussing, Screamadelica which was the third studio album by Scottish rock/indie band Primal Scream. It was first released on 23 September 1991 in the United Kingdom. The album includes "Loaded", "Movin' On Up", "Come Together" and "Higher Than The Sun".How did a remix transform a rock band into dance music pioneers? In our latest episode, we embark on a spirited journey through Primal Scream's iconic album "Screamadelica." Set against the backdrop of September 1991—a month that birthed Nirvana's "Nevermind" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"—we reminisce about our teenage years and debate which album truly defined the era. With a playful quiz on the band's roots, we explore their ties with figures like Bobby Gillespie and Alan McGee, and the influence of the UK indie and Acid House scenes, all peppered with tales of our adolescent awkwardness. Our discussion takes a lively turn as we dissect the album's eclectic nature, bouncing between gospel-infused anthems and psychedelic dance tracks. We engage in a humorous yet passionate debate over whether "Screamadelica" should be considered a concept album, reminiscent of a journey through a weekend's highs and lows. We even engage in a cheeky saxophone solo showdown, diving into differing tastes in jazz and musical complexity, while reflecting on the transformative power of tracks like "Moving On Up" and "Slip Inside This House."No conversation about "Screamadelica" would be complete without celebrating the profound impact of Andy Weatherall. We dive into his pivotal role in reshaping the band's sound with remixes like "Loaded," and ponder how his collaboration with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes forged a legacy that won the 1992 Mercury Prize. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, our exploration promises not just entertainment but a deep appreciation for an album that remains a defining piece of '90s musical history.Support the showTwitter - https://twitter.com/mccartneyinWebsite - https://mccartneyingoal.com/

Alles nur Show? Die gespielten Titel: Interpret:in: Titel (Album / Label) PJ Harvey: The Dancer (To Bring You My Love / Island Records) PJ Harvey: 50 ft Queenie (Rid of Me / Island Records9 PJ Harvey: This Mess We're In - Good Fortune (Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea / Island Records) PJ Harvey: Shame (Uh Huh Her / Island Records) Marianne Faithful: The Mystery of Love (Before the Poison / Anti Records, Naïve) PJ Harvey: When Under Ether (White Chalk / Island Records) PJ Harvey: The Words that Maketh Murder (Let England Shake / Island Records) PJ Harvey: The Ministry of Defence (The Hope Six Demolition Project / Island Records) PJ Harvey: A Child's Question, August (I Inside the Old Year Dying / Partisan)

Gemma Hayes, from Tipperary and now living in West Cork, released her sixth studio album Blind Faith on September 27. It's her first album in 10 years - Gemma says she has reasons for the break: she simply lost the urge to write and was busy raising two children. We talk about all that - how she literally locked away her guitars and subsequently lost confidence in her ability to make music - in this interview. Produced by Hayes with Karl Odlum, David Odlum and Brian Casey from Wavefield Recording Studio in Clonakilty, Blind Faith features Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals on ‘Eye For An Eye' and ‘Feed The Flames', which she also co-wrote, while Paul Noonan duets with Gemma on ‘Another Love'. --- From the press release: The youngest of eight children raised in the small village of Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, Gemma Hayes' introduced herself to the world with her 2002 debut Night On My Side. With its deft production, ambitious arrangements and Hayes' dreamy, rock-leaning vocal delivery, the album was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for the Mercury Prize (now known as the Choice Music Prize). Since then, she has released four critically acclaimed studio albums and a limited-edition live album, while her music is constantly in demand for film and TV placements. Her version of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game', recorded for the US TV series Pretty Little Liars, now has over 24 million streams on Spotify alone, while she recently contributed to the soundtrack of the film adaptation of Roddy Doyle's Greyhound of a Girl. For the last 5 years, London band Black Midi have pushed experimental rock music to new and thrilling places, inspired as much by jazz fusion as math rock and no wave. But last month, quite unexpectedly, the trio split up. It was meant to be kept a secret, until singer and frontman Geordie Greep announced the news on Instagram. One week later, he announced his debut solo album, boldly titled The New Sound (out this month via Rough Trade Records). Stu visited Geordie at his home shortly after these two bits of indie-shaking news broke, to discuss the end of the Black Midi and the start of Greep's solo career, as well as his time at the prestigious Brit School, and what makes Angels by Robbie Williams actually a very good pop song. Also on this week's show, Greg and Stu pick apart the week's headlines, lament being so rubbish at predicting who would win the Mercury Prize, and count down the greatest award show speeches of all time. This is the last episode of Digging for a while, and we're celebrating with the queen of vegetables… potatoes! Flo is joined by CMAT for her favourite job on the allotment. CMAT is a fast rising singer songwriter from Ireland who has been tirelessly touring Europe and North America with her incredible live show for years now. She's just been nominated for the Mercury Prize, adding that to her list along with Ivor Novello and Brit nominations. The irony of having the only Irish guest of the season harvest potatoes is not lost on CMAT, who considered her superior harvest some form of reparation. In this episode she and Flo talk about pretty much everything, but highlights include CMAT's refreshing love of fame, growing beans in Red Stripe tins and the art of songwriting - all whilst they dig up those unfortunate potatoes. Rockshow episode 201 Amy Winehouse Amy Winehouse was a British singer-songwriter known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, and reggae. Born on September 14, 1983, in Southgate, London, she became one of the most celebrated and controversial artists of her time. Winehouse's rise to fame began with her debut album, “Frank” (2003), which received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. However, it was her second album, “Back to Black” (2006), that catapulted her to international stardom. This album included hits like “Rehab,” “You Know I'm No Good,” and “Back to Black,” and won five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rehab.” Despite her success, Winehouse's career was often overshadowed by her personal struggles with substance abuse, mental health issues, and tumultuous relationships, particularly with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Her distinctive beehive hairstyle and heavy eyeliner became iconic, but her erratic behavior and frequent run-ins with the law drew significant media attention. Tragically, Amy Winehouse died on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27, from alcohol poisoning. Her death was widely mourned, and she was posthumously celebrated for her contributions to music. Her life and career have been the subject of numerous documentaries and biographical works, most notably the 2015 film “Amy,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Winehouse remains a symbol of both immense talent and the tragic consequences of fame and addiction. https://www.amywinehouse.com/ https://www.facebook.com/share/AK9HYjKcX8fYRRRA/?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://www.instagram.com/amywinehouse?igsh=MWh6anFzcHp2M3Mxbw== https://youtube.com/@amywinehousevideo?si=y56GedgioC-E_Hw6 https://amywinehousefoundation.org/ https://x.com/amywinehouse?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg #AmyWinehouse #BackToBlack #Rehab #FrankAlbum #SoulMusic#jazz #Blues #IconicVoice#MusicLegend #GoneTooSoon #27Club #AmyForever #Winehouse #BritishMusic #ClassicAlbums Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup
Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. His approach is characterized by close collaboration with artists, aiming to distill a sound and style uniquely theirs while encouraging them to explore new territories. Emphasizing the visceral impact of music and its ability to evoke emotion and movement, Greenspan rejects formulas in favor of capturing genuine artistic expression. I wanted to revisit an episode about one of my favorite songs from 2021, “Black Dog” by Arlo Parks. A few months after this episode originally came out, Arlo Parks won the Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. She was also nominated for two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album. Since then, she released a new album called My Soft Machine, and she's going to be on tour this spring. Arlo Parks is a singer and songwriter from London. In January 2021, she released her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams. It hit number three on the UK charts, and she won this year's BRIT award for Breakthrough Artist. Last year, NME called her song "Black Dog" the year's "most devastating song." In this episode, Anaïs breaks down “Black Dog," which she made with producer Gianluca Buccellati. John sits down with indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club to talk about their sixth studio album ‘My Big Day'. Bombay Bicycle Club are a four-piece band from London, that broke onto the indie music scene with their genre defining debut album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose' in 2009. Since then they have been releasing a steady stream of music which has been met with high critical acclaim, earning them an Ivor Novello and a Mercury Prize nominations. Chatting with band members Jack Steadman and Ed Nash, the three cover a range of topics including the inspiration behind the album, their use of sampling in their music, how over-thinking can negatively influence the production process, and their collaboration with music legends Damon Albarn, Paul Epworth & Chaka Khan. Sampha is a singer, songwriter and producer from London. His first album, Process, won the Mercury Prize in 2017. He's collaborated with artists like the XX, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Solange. If you saw the Song Exploder Netflix show, Sampha was in the Alicia Keys episode, for the song they did together as a duet. This year, in October 2023, Sampha put out his second album, Lahai. And for this episode, I talked to Sampha about the song “Spirit 2.0.” Coming up you'll hear the original demo, and some early voice memos. Sampha recruited some collaborators for the song, like producer Pablo Diez-Reixa, aka El Guincho, who won a Grammy for his work on Rosalia's first album; plus Yaeji; and Lisa Kaindé, from Ibeyi. But the song “Spirit 2.0” first took shape when Sampha was by himself, at home. For more, visit songexploder.net/sampha.
