Welcome back to another Trve. Cvlt. Pop! where you can hear people talk about music on a podcast. On this week's show, we say goodbye to an old favourite as Steve and Gaz complete the A-Z of Atrocities with the letter X, Y and Z finishing the entire alphabet of BAD things off.Expect rants on a grungy style of singing, people on that internet making 'content', a low point in the Iron Maiden discography, corporate sponsorship being everywhere, bonus songs on albums that you never wanted and, of course, indie landfill gets yet another kicking. We also recall a lost banger from Goldbug and their cover of a Led Zep classic, look through the Mercury Prize nominees, talk about Therapy?'s recent London birthday party and... what's going on with Drowning Pool exactly? We try and work it out.

John is joined by Irish singer-songwriter CMAT and producer Oli Deakin, to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘EURO-COUNTRY'. CMAT, aka Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, is best known for her unique blend of country-infused pop music, which often incorporates humour and pop culture references. She released her debut album, ‘If My Wife New I'd Be Dead', in 2022, produced by longtime friend Oli Deakin. Both it and second album ‘Crazymad, For Me' were praised for their detailed lyricism. The latter was also nominated for the Mercury Prize and the Ivor Novello Award for Best Album. CMAT's third album ‘EURO-COUNTRY' was released on 29th August 2025, with Oli Deakin again on production. It has already garnered rave reviews and given CMAT her first viral Tiktok hit with ‘Take a Sexy Picture of Me'. Sitting down at Platoon Studios in London, the trio discuss how the album was inspired by growing up in Ireland in the Noughties, why CMAT's phone is her most important instrument, how online trolling inspired her viral hit ‘Take a Sexy Picture of Me' and why a three-minute ‘perfect' pop melody can be the most effective way to deliver a hard-hitting political message. John sits down with Scottish artist, producer and DJ Josh Mainnie, better known as Barry Can't Swim, and producer O' Flynn to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘Loner'. Josh first began releasing under the alias Barry Can't Swim in 2019, releasing a stream of singles that began attracting attention for their melodic, dance-driven style. In 2023, he released his first full-length album, ‘When Will We Land?', which became a huge success, earning him nominations for the Mercury Prize and at the BRIT Awards. ‘Loner' released in July 2025, sees him reflect on his newfound fame and place in the industry, whilst maintaining his signature high energy beats and captivating soundscapes. Sitting down with Josh, and later with collaborator O'Flynn, the conversation dives into the album-making process. They explore Josh's sampling techniques, the ideal mindset and headspace for creating great music, and the stories behind capturing sounds from unexpected places, like the toilets of an Indian restaurant, and turning them into tracks. Richard Fearless is a true lifer. The DJ, producer and Death In Vegas founder sits down with Paul to reflect on 30 years of musical evolution that has taken him from the hugely influential Heavenly Social to Mercury Prize nominations, a top ten hit about a serial killer sung by Iggy Pop to his current creative renaissance, working free from industry bullshit and producing his best work in years,Growing up in remote Zambia with music-loving parents, Fearless recalls connecting with music at an early age. His path would lead through the emerging London techno scene of the late '80s and '90s, where he cut his teeth as a resident DJ alongside contemporaries like Andrew Weatherall and The Chemical Brothers before launching Death in Vegas. The conversation reveals a pivotal moment when commercial success led to a crossroads rather than continued mainstream pursuit. What emerges is the portrait of an artist who deliberately stepped away from major labels, management, and industry expectations to craft a more authentic sonic identity. His riverside studio "The Metal Box" becomes central to this narrative – an analog sanctuary where tape machines, field recordings, and environmental sounds combine to create the stripped-back, trance-inducing techno of his current work. "I make my best music when I'm digging deep within myself," he explains.Perhaps most compelling is Fearless's admission that he feels more proud of his recent, independent work than the commercial hits that brought him fame. His collaborative ventures with friend of Lost and Sound Daniel Avery and new dub-inspired night "Holy" demonstrate an artist still pushing boundaries rather than retreating into nostalgia. "I feel as excited about DJing as I was when I was 20," he confesses, signaling that artistic liberation has reinvigorated his passion.Death Mask by Death In Vegas is out now. Anohni is a singer and songwriter originally from England, who started putting out music in 2000. She's released 6 albums, and won the Mercury Prize. She's also been nominated for two Brit Awards, and an Oscar. For this episode, I talked to her about the song "4 Degrees," from her 2016 album Hopelessness. It might be strange to describe a song about climate change as an anthem, but that's what I think it is, and it feels more urgent with every passing year. It's also one of my most listened-to songs. It was produced by two of my favorite electronic musicians: Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, and Ross Birchard, aka Hudson Mohawke. I got to speak to Ross about how he started the track on his own, before it became a collaboration between the three of them. This is an episode that I've been trying to make happen since 2016. Here it is.For more info, visit songexploder.net/anohni.Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.

Sin Spandau Ballet le True – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1983. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2001 chuir Rod Stewart cheist chun a móideanna pósta a athnuachan. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 29th of April, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1977: the united unionist action council called on the norths loyalist workers for a total stoppage and withdrawal of labour from mid night on monday next. 1994: the trustee savings bank was expected to submit formal proposals to government that the national irish bank should be allowed to buy control of the state asset 1983: the chairman of clare co.council development team mr joseph boland this week called for urgent action and new thinking on job creation in clare in view of the population of nearly 105,000 projected for the country. 1994: ennis general hospital was put very firmly on the sick list by a group of outside experts who have concluded that it is more concerned with staff and their problems than with the improvement of overall standards of patients care. That was Spandau Ballet with True – the biggest song on this day in 1983. Onto music news on this day In 2001 Rod Stewart asked for a change in wedding vows bringing them up to-date and to be treated like a dog licence. Stewart said 'a change is needed because they've been in existence for 600 years when people used to live until they were only 35'. 2007 Arctic Monkeys started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare. The album was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize and won Best British Album at the 2008 Brit Awards. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld was born in 1954 and actor Daniel Day-Lewis was born on this day in the UK in 1957 and this is some of the stuff he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

With her third album, 'A Complicated Woman', coming out next month, I wanted to revisit my first interview with Self Esteem from 2020. It was pretty clear from the get-go that she was going to bulldoze the rules of pop, & she has - her unfiltered lyrics about female pleasure, queerness, heartbreak & more have garnered her a large & loyal fanbase, both in the UK & internationally. She has also been nominated for a Mercury Prize, appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, & has starred in the West End production of Cabaret. English Teacher's highly anticipated LP This Could Be Texas is a perfect debut, even earning the esteemed Mercury Prize. The Leeds quartet held little to nothing back across the 13 song collection. With piano refrains, guitar riffs and poetic lyrics, the album defies genre, toeing the lines of post-punk and indie-prog and everything in between. It's expansive and sonically spacious without feeling too unapproachable.Frontwoman Lily Fontaine explains, “I want this album to feel like you've gone to space, and it turns out it's almost identical to Doncaster. It's about in-betweens, it's about home, and it's about Desire Paths.”Watch English Teacher perform “Broken Biscuits” and “Albatross” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.

A wintry collage from one of 2024's breakout stars. As far as crossover electronic success goes, Barry Can't Swim's 2024 scorecard would take some beating. His singles have racked up hundreds of millions of streams, he bagged a Mercury Prize nomination and has the range to both pack out festivals as a DJ and sell out tours worldwide with a string-accented live show. Barely 12 months on from the release of debut album "When Will We Land?", it's fair to say Josh Mannie is one of the most in-demand artists working in dance and electronic music right now, with a follow-up LP nearly done, he says. For RA.968, he pulls in the complete opposite direction from any of that. Sure, there are nods to Mark Leckey and late-night jazz haunts throughout his catalogue, and the ruminative clouds drifting across his signature golden-hour glow do suggest an artist with a sharp grasp on meteorological melancholy. But a beatless collage featuring Suso Sáiz, Slow Attack Ensemble and Lorenzo Senni? It's a surprise, and a welcome one at that. Speckled with exclusive airings of brand-new ambient material, Barry Can't Swim's RA Podcast charts a path from This Mortal Coil to Ryuichi Sakamoto, with a detour through some Linkwood and Anthony Naples deep cuts we've not heard for a good while. (He even includes a Stars of the Lid favourite which namechecks Fulham's home ground, an act of mid-table grace for the diehard Everton fan). RA.968 has the crackle of a frosty night walk set to tape—a holiday gift from one of the most popular acts in the game. 'Tis the season. @barrycantswim Read more at ra.co/podcast/968

Ezra Collective are one of the UK's most exciting improvisation groups, blending jazz with Afrobeat, reggae and soul. The quintet released their third album this autumn called "Dance, No One's Watching", a mission statement to get everybody on the dance floor.
Episode 53: Screamadelica (Primal Scream). McCartney In Goal is the podcast that debates the great albums of pop music, using a competitive knock-out format. Today we're discussing, Screamadelica which was the third studio album by Scottish rock/indie band Primal Scream. It was first released on 23 September 1991 in the United Kingdom. The album includes "Loaded", "Movin' On Up", "Come Together" and "Higher Than The Sun".How did a remix transform a rock band into dance music pioneers? In our latest episode, we embark on a spirited journey through Primal Scream's iconic album "Screamadelica." Set against the backdrop of September 1991—a month that birthed Nirvana's "Nevermind" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"—we reminisce about our teenage years and debate which album truly defined the era. With a playful quiz on the band's roots, we explore their ties with figures like Bobby Gillespie and Alan McGee, and the influence of the UK indie and Acid House scenes, all peppered with tales of our adolescent awkwardness. Our discussion takes a lively turn as we dissect the album's eclectic nature, bouncing between gospel-infused anthems and psychedelic dance tracks. We engage in a humorous yet passionate debate over whether "Screamadelica" should be considered a concept album, reminiscent of a journey through a weekend's highs and lows. We even engage in a cheeky saxophone solo showdown, diving into differing tastes in jazz and musical complexity, while reflecting on the transformative power of tracks like "Moving On Up" and "Slip Inside This House."No conversation about "Screamadelica" would be complete without celebrating the profound impact of Andy Weatherall. We dive into his pivotal role in reshaping the band's sound with remixes like "Loaded," and ponder how his collaboration with Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes forged a legacy that won the 1992 Mercury Prize. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, our exploration promises not just entertainment but a deep appreciation for an album that remains a defining piece of '90s musical history.Support the showTwitter - https://twitter.com/mccartneyinWebsite - https://mccartneyingoal.com/

Alles nur Show? CMAT is a fast rising singer songwriter from Ireland who has been tirelessly touring Europe and North America with her incredible live show for years now. She's just been nominated for the Mercury Prize, adding that to her list along with Ivor Novello and Brit nominations. The irony of having the only Irish guest of the season harvest potatoes is not lost on CMAT, who considered her superior harvest some form of reparation. In this episode she and Flo talk about pretty much everything, but highlights include CMAT's refreshing love of fame, growing beans in Red Stripe tins and the art of songwriting - all whilst they dig up those unfortunate potatoes. Since then he's mastered projects for legends like U2, Nirvana, Sheryl Crow, The Clash, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, John Mellencamp, Ozzy Osbourne - the list goes on. During our interview Howie talked about mastering at the beginning of hip hop, the tremendous volume of work that he does, why he thinks vinyl is a fad, why he creates both an analog and digital master, and so much more. I spoke with Howie via zoom from his home in Santa Monica. Rockshow episode 201 Amy Winehouse Amy Winehouse was a British singer-songwriter known for her deep, expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, jazz, and reggae. Born on September 14, 1983, in Southgate, London, she became one of the most celebrated and controversial artists of her time. Winehouse's rise to fame began with her debut album, “Frank” (2003), which received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. However, it was her second album, “Back to Black” (2006), that catapulted her to international stardom. This album included hits like “Rehab,” “You Know I'm No Good,” and “Back to Black,” and won five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rehab.” Despite her success, Winehouse's career was often overshadowed by her personal struggles with substance abuse, mental health issues, and tumultuous relationships, particularly with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Her distinctive beehive hairstyle and heavy eyeliner became iconic, but her erratic behavior and frequent run-ins with the law drew significant media attention. Tragically, Amy Winehouse died on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27, from alcohol poisoning. Her death was widely mourned, and she was posthumously celebrated for her contributions to music. Her life and career have been the subject of numerous documentaries and biographical works, most notably the 2015 film “Amy,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Winehouse remains a symbol of both immense talent and the tragic consequences of fame and addiction. https://www.amywinehouse.com/ https://www.facebook.com/share/AK9HYjKcX8fYRRRA/?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://www.instagram.com/amywinehouse?igsh=MWh6anFzcHp2M3Mxbw== https://youtube.com/@amywinehousevideo?si=y56GedgioC-E_Hw6 https://amywinehousefoundation.org/ https://x.com/amywinehouse?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg #AmyWinehouse #BackToBlack #Rehab #FrankAlbum #SoulMusic#jazz #Blues #IconicVoice#MusicLegend #GoneTooSoon #27Club #AmyForever #Winehouse #BritishMusic #ClassicAlbums Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup
John is joined by IDLES' Bowen, along with producer Kenny Beats, and producer and engineer Mikko Gordon, to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘TANGK'. Idles are a British post-punk band who gained recognition with their 2017 debut album ‘Brutalism'. Known for their gritty, powerful sound and explosive live shows, their five albums to date have earned them nominations for the Mercury Prize, BRIT & Grammy Awards. Their latest record, ‘TANGK', sees the band team up with producers Nigel Godrich and Kenny Beats, and digs into topics of love and gratitude, all while maintaining their signature Idles energy. Linking up between Kenny's LA studio and Mikko's London studio, the trio discuss how they utilised the different strands of experience and expertise from all involved. As well as dubious covers and Christmas day demos, they share stories of writing team breakouts and the unexpected moments that came when they drew inspiration beyond their usual domains. Tracks discussed: Roy, A Gospel, POP POP POP TAPE IT Thanks to our friends at Tape It for supporting the podcast. Visit tape.it/tapenotes or use the promo code TAPENOTES in the app to get 50% off. I wanted to revisit an episode about one of my favorite songs from 2021, “Black Dog” by Arlo Parks. A few months after this episode originally came out, Arlo Parks won the Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. She was also nominated for two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album. Since then, she released a new album called My Soft Machine, and she's going to be on tour this spring. Arlo Parks is a singer and songwriter from London. In January 2021, she released her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams. It hit number three on the UK charts, and she won this year's BRIT award for Breakthrough Artist. Last year, NME called her song "Black Dog" the year's "most devastating song." In this episode, Anaïs breaks down “Black Dog," which she made with producer Gianluca Buccellati.
