This week, Matt and I welcome Nichole Vatcher—cohost of the brilliant podcast Nevermind the Music—for a deep dive into Gary Jules' haunting 2001 cover of “Mad World.” Originally a minor hit for a young Tears for Fears, the song took on a whole new life thanks to its stripped-down piano arrangement and its eerie, unforgettable appearance in Donnie Darko. We talk about its emotional weight, how it became a surprise Christmas #1 in the UK, and whether more credit should go to Gary Jules or his collaborator Michael Andrews. We also take a look at the rest of Jules' career and try to determine whether this quietly powerful ballad is thunder… or just rumble in the distance. Bobby, Tom, and Brooks begin this episode with and center on the revival of the "bracket" concept, this time focusing on "The Bracket of Good" across various categories, contrasting it with their past chaotic "Bracket of Bad." Brooks sparks a tech discussion covering the generational impact of mobile devices on PC understanding, the evolution of hardware and software, and nostalgic reflections on legacy tech like PS/2 and CRT. The hosts also touch upon the surprising consistency of keyboard tech, forgotten mechanical keyboards, and the retro tech resurgence. Finally, they discuss revisiting classic gaming via PlayStation 2 ROMs and share anecdotes about controversial and memorable games such as Manhunt, Mad World, and the Phillips CDI Zelda titles.#podcast #keyboards #PS2 #BringTheNoise #JoinTheBrigade

Life's complexities are our playground as we welcome Langhorne Slim to No Simple Road! We navigate the quirks of growing older, embracing our passions with a bit more fervor and curiosity. Despite the chaos, enduring friendships and the legacies of loved ones remain our anchors. UFOs might hover in our musings, but it's the relationships we cherish that keep us grounded. Our journey isn't just about music; it's about the dance of loss and love, and the beautiful chaos of human connection amidst the mysteries of existence. Music steps in as both healer and unifier, transcending societal divisions and political noise. In our conversations, skepticism towards authority meets a yearning for unity, with music acting as the bridge. Sobriety and personal growth intertwine with tales of confronting addiction, all while Mr. Beautiful, the affectionate cat, adds a sprinkle of humor. Through stories of parenthood, authenticity, and even speculative drone theories, we discover that love, in all its forms, is a powerful force driving us to grow, connect, and thrive. Some of the biggest comedians of the time get together for a crazy comedic treasure hunt. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is a 1963 film directed by Stanley Kramer which stars Spencer Tracy alongside a cracking cast of Comedic Stars. Trev's never seen it, Stephen knows it well - so how do you rate this one?
My guest this week is Sierra Hull.Since I spoke to Sierra for the podcast back in January 2023 she's been ridiculously busy touring and recording. We chat about the extended tour she's been on for Bela Fleck's My Bluegrass Heart (which she describes as one of the highlights of her musical life), her current and ongoing tour with her own band (which has been chaotic to say the least!) and why she chose to have a drummer in her band, even though she confesses she's not generally a fan of drums in bluegrass. We talk about the wonderful band she's assembled and what they've been up to in the studio, including recording a new album (due in the first quarter of 2025), two great covers (Tears For Fears' Mad World and The Grateful Dead's Black Muddy River), not one but two holiday songs (the first of which,The First Snowfall, is out this week) and her Freshgrass Concerto commission.Lots to look forward to if (like me) you're a Sierra Hull fan! This conversation was a lot of fun - I hope you enjoy it!For info and tour dates head to Sierra's website sierrahull.comFor regular updates follow Sierra on Facebook and InstagramIf you missed it, check out my previous interview with Sierra.Happy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Today, we're diving into the flashy and often thrilling world of cinematic money scenes as we count down our Top 5 Cash Scenes in movies. We'll also discuss the complexities of financial manipulation in The Laundromat (2019) and switch gears to the animated high stakes of Thunderbirds Are Go.Top 5 Cash Scenes in Movies:The Dark Knight (2008) - The Joker's notorious scene where he burns a mountain of cash is not only visually striking but also serves as a profound statement on his anarchistic views towards money and power. No Country for Old Men (2007) - The suspenseful scene where Llewelyn Moss discovers a case full of cash amidst a drug deal gone wrong is pivotal. It sets the tone for the cat-and-mouse chase that underpins the movie's tension.Scarface (1983) - Tony Montana's famous “money laundering” montage showcases his rise to power. The visual of cash flowing through counting machines as he builds his empire is iconic in cinema history. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - Jordan Belfort's indulgent lifestyle fueled by ill-gotten gains is epitomized in the scene where he and his cohorts toss cash around their office, highlighting the excess and moral decay of his financial practices. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - The chaotic scramble for cash buried under the "big W" provides not only comedic gold but also a critical look at greed and desperation as every character vies for the hidden treasure. The Laundromat, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep, delves into the shadowy world of financial fraud and the repercussions of the Panama Papers. The film intertwines multiple narratives to explore how money laundering affects people from different walks of life. While it aims to shed light on complex financial deceptions, the film's sprawling approach to storytelling sometimes dilutes its impact, leaving us wishing for a tighter narrative focus. Shifting to a more family-friendly portrayal of high-tech adventures, Thunderbirds Are Go revisits the beloved world of the Tracy family and their life-saving missions. Although not focused on cash per se, the show's funding by the secretive and wealthy Tracy family and their high-stakes rescues offer a lighter way to discuss the power and responsibilities that come with great wealth. We hated it.Whether you're drawn to the dramatic flair of cash flying around in films or intrigued by the intricate depictions of financial malfeasance in modern cinema, today's episode promises a rich exploration of money's cinematic allure and its real-world implications. Join us as we unravel the tales of treasure and treachery that make these cash scenes so compelling.

Paul Feig's Jackpot! asks a strange question: what if a film combined the maddash comedy of 1963's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with the gory dystopian free-for-all premise of The Purge? You'd get a weird action-comedy that's more of a vehicle for Awkwafina and John Cena that's occasionally very funny, until it's not. I couldn't help but think that a few years back, something like this might have had a chance of becoming a minor hit in theaters.
Nothing brings the worst out of people like greed, and no movie makes that clearer than the 1963 comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. This week, Bri and special guest Amy Judd Lieberman tell Cozi to watch this epic story about a group of strangers who find out about buried loot and race to get there first. Will Cozi give this classic comedy a chance? Recommendations: Bri – Ask for help when you need it Amy – The podcast 5-4 Cozi – The movie The King Tide (2024)

Act 2 of 'Run Rabbit Run' cranks the intensity to 11, serving up a cinematic cocktail that's one part adrenaline rush, two parts dark comedy, with a twist of pulp fiction. Our anti-heroes Roland and Monte find themselves caught in a whirlwind of chaos that would make even the most hardened criminals say 'What the f***?' This act delivers more twists than a pretzel factory on steroids. We've got high-speed chases that'll make your heart race faster than a coked-up hamster, dialogue sharper than a samurai sword, and enough double-crosses to make you dizzy. It's like someone tossed 'Pulp Fiction', 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels', and 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' into a blender and hit puree. The characters are so vividly drawn, you can practically smell their desperation and hear the gears grinding in their heads as they try to outmaneuver each other. And just when you think you've got it figured out, BAM! – the script hits you with another curveball that'll leave you reeling. Buckle up. This ain't your grandma's crime caper – unless your grandma is a badass with a penchant for mayhem and a vocabulary that would make a sailor blush. 'Run Rabbit Run' Act 2 is a wild ride that'll leave you breathless, mindf***ed, and hungry for more."
