#184: Scrum in High-Stakes Environments with John Holmes

Many leaders assume Agile breaks down in highly regulated environments. John Holmes has spent years proving the opposite inside aerospace, defense, and space programs where the cost of failure is extremely high.   Overview   In this episode, Brian Milner talks with Scrum Inc. Fellow John Holmes about what it actually takes to apply Scrum in complex defense and aerospace organizations. From military programs to space systems, John explains why Agile is often less about moving faster and more about creating visibility, improving communication, and reducing the risk of major surprises late in delivery.   John also shares practical lessons from coaching teams inside highly disciplined environments where command-and-control leadership has traditionally dominated. The conversation explores how Agile can strengthen discipline rather than weaken it, why trust and training matter more than process compliance, and how small operational changes can create meaningful improvements in delivery, alignment, and team effectiveness.   References and resources mentioned in the show:   John Holmes #107: Transforming Organizational Mindsets with Bernie Maloney #108: Adaptive Organizations with Ken Rickard There Is No End State When Transitioning to Agile by Mike Cohn Subscribe to the Agile Mentors Podcast   Want to get involved? The Platinum Princess is on the Krazy Train. Jasmin St. Claire sits down with adult entertainment Golden Era icon SEKA — the woman who dated Sam Kinison, appeared on Saturday Night Live, ended up at Lorne Michaels' after-party, and walked away from one of the most recognizable careers in adult film history entirely on her own terms. SEKA breaks down entering the industry in the 1970s with no testing and no rulebook, working regularly with John Holmes, starring in Dracula Sucks, and watching the AVN Awards transform from an industry secret into a full-blown institution. She gets into life after the industry, the stigma she faced on talk shows, rockstar encounters, her 2005 return scene, OnlyFans, and exactly what she thinks about where the modern adult entertainment world has gone. Britney Spears post-rehab DUI plea deal, Eli Zaret stops by as Tarik Skubal goes for surgery, Blake Lively & Justin Baldoni settle, Michael Jackson biopic success, Russell Brand v. Piers Morgan, and Meghan Markle won't go away. We're in year 11. Hooray. University of Michigan is paying a law firm $11.5M when a couple private investigators would have taken $5K. Eli Zaret drops by the studio to break down the awful injury to Detroit Tiger starter Tarik Skubal, recap the Detroit Pistons series win over the Orlando Magic, a big move in the WNBA, ridiculous 2026 World Cup soccer prices, go off on a tangent about Oz Pearlman, the Detroit Lions pick up Anthony Lucas, NCAA tournament to 76 teams, Damon Jones pleads guilty, NCAA vs Brendan Sorsby, Eli doesn't like gambling, an ABS pizza challenge and much more. The pretentious Met Gala is tonight. Meghan Markle was not invited. Timothée Chalamet has better things to do. Jeff Bezos is ruining the event. Spencer Pratt for LA Mayor! The Palisades Fire suspect is a crazy dude that loves Luigi Mangione. Britney Spears DUI is resolved, but we're not satisfied with the outcome. Russell Brand is nauseating. He is is teaching the masses how to be good Christians these days, but cannot find his way around his own bible. The Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni case is OVER. At least we'll always have their stupid movie. Summer House is getting a lot of play lately and we have no idea why. We're forced to learn about Hannah Berner and Giggly Squad. Woodward Sports has a new owner. Jim Bentley and Human Nature are officially gay… according to Twitter. Roberto dressed up in his finest Met Gala outfit over the weekend. We check out some nice comments on our 10 year anniversary. Michael is killing it at the box office. They left out a pretty known controversy from the film. Spike Lee loves the flick. Paris Jackson is coming around on the truth. John Holmes had Super AIDS. We watch Corey Feldman complain about former band members. He claims he was SNUBBED from the Michael premiere. Wu-Tang Clan wants nothing to do with Corey Feldman. Dave Chappelle goes to bat for Kanye West. North West, meanwhile, dropped an EP and it sucks. Post Malone and Jelly Roll can't sell out stadiums. The Pussycat Dolls can't sell anything either. Diana Russini did NOT save a man's life. Stolen valor. Inside the NBA took a shot at her and Mike Vrabel. Jordon Hudson has entered the fray. Mike Florio is not interested in the story much to Chris Simms dismay. Markleverse: Meghan Markle won't go away. Thomas Markle is returning to the United States. Mark Dolan gave us quite the shoutout. Rudy Giuliani is dying ASAP. Jimmy Kimmel is in trouble again. Merch is for sale! Buy it. Or don't. But do. Back in the day, everybody seemed to have an opinion about Ron Jeremy – and maybe that was part of his appeal. He was probably the most ubiquitous of all male adult film stars, and certainly the most polarizing. In the early days of The Rialto Report, I was keen to interview him. My interest has always been in tracking down stories from the golden age of adult cinema that have never been revealed – but even though Ron's story had been told many times before, I was still keen to ask him about his life and career. After all, Ron was ranked by Adult Video News at No. 1 in their “50 Top Porn Stars of All Time” list, who described him as the most recognizable porn ambassador to the world, ranking him ahead of people like Jenna Jameson, Marilyn Chambers, and John Holmes. In addition to his hundreds of adult films – both as an actor and director, he appeared in countless mainstream movies and music videos, there was a documentary and a best-selling biography, he was hired for personal appearances all over the country, and he was a brand spokesperson for products that included rum, cigars, beef jerky, and of course, male enhancement pills. I met up with him at his home in Los Angeles on several occasions, and we often spoke about doing an interview – or rather I listened to him talk in what seemed like one continuous sentence, unable to get a word in between all of his detailed anecdotes and memories. And then came 2017, and the multiple allegations of years of sexual misdemeanors. In truth, the stories had circulated for a long time before that. It's just that now they were suddenly taken more seriously in the era of Me Too, splashed across newspapers, magazines, and social media. I'd heard the accusations for years too – just as I'd interviewed people who worked with him, who'd described him as respectful and considerate, I'd also met ex-colleagues who criticized him for being predatory. My interest was centered on his early career, which was why I was excited when I came across a previously unpublished interview with him from the late 1980s. It was a conversation between Ron and Barbara Nitke that took place in, where else, a New York diner, not far from Queens where Ron was born and raised. At the time, Barbara was carving out a career as a still photographer on adult film sets in New York, and she was putting together a book of her pictures that she intended to be accompanied by a series of interviews with the stars. The book, American Ecstasy, was eventually published, without any interviews, many years later in 2012. It's a fine testament to the mid-1980s industry in crisis, transitioning from high budget, scripted film productions to smaller and cheaper video shoots. When Barbara interviewed Ron, he was experiencing the same transition – and the same existential doubts that came with it. Barbara asks about this – and more, in this conversation, which is presented here for the first time. Remarkably, given this was almost 40 years ago, she also asks about the women who were refusing to work to him at the time. Many thanks to Barbara Nitke for sharing the interview with us. You can find more details about her work at Barbara’s website and hear our podcast interview with her here. Thanks too to NSS for the audio restoration and mastering. This podcast episode is 50 minutes long. ———————————————————————————————————————————- * The post The Gospel According to Ron Jeremy in 1986, with Barbara Nitke – Podcast 160 appeared first on The Rialto Report.

Today's poem is a “row of perfect rhymes” and an absolute delight. Happy reading. You can find the text of the poem here.George Starbuck was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 15, 1931. He grew up in Illinois and California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley for two years, and the University of Chicago for three. He then studied with Archibald MacLeish and Robert Lowell, alongside peers Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath, at Harvard University. Starbuck won the Yale Younger Poets Prize for his collection Bone Thoughts (1960). He is the author of several other books, including The Argot Merchant Disaster: New and Selected Poems (1982), Elegy in a Country Church Yard (1974), and White Paper (1966). He taught at the State University College at Buffalo, the University of Iowa, and Boston University.Starbuck's witty songs of protest are usually concerned with love, war, and the spiritual temper of the times. John Holmes believed that “there hasn't been as much word excitement ... for years,” as one finds in Bone Thoughts. Harvey Shapiro pointed out that Starbuck's work is attractive because of its “witty, improvisational surface, slangy and familiar address, brilliant aural quality” and added that Starbuck may become a “spokesman for the bright, unhappy young men.” Louise Bogan asserted that his daring satire “sets him off from the poets of generalized rebellion.”After reading Bone Thoughts, Holmes hoped for other books in the same vein; R.F. Clayton found that, in White Paper(1966), the verse again stings with parody. Although Robert D. Spector wasn't sure of Starbuck's sincerity in Bone Thoughts, he rated the poems in White Paper, which range “from parody to elegy to sonnets, and even acrostic exercises,” as “generally superior examples of their kind.” In particular, Spector wrote, when Starbuck juxtaposes McNamara's political language and a Quaker's self-immolation by burning, or wryly offers an academician's praise for this nation's demonstration of humanity by halting its bombing for “five whole days,” we sense this poet's genuine commitment.Starbuck died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on August 1, 1996.-bio via Poetry Foundation This is a public episode. Hat Trick's Hinge horror stories collide with Kid's Bull Durham interview prep, all capped by anthemic absurdity: a Trump banger belting "I'm gonna put some dick in" as the ultimate earworm of earworms. Zero regrets, infinite boners—because nothing says "turning 50" like foot-fucking for science. Quick Notes: Porn Oddities: Penny-horse quickies, toe-banging plaster disasters, Bonnie Blue's Tesla temptress vibes, and a Jenna Jameson double-suck graph-fest. Kink Confessions: Getting-caught thrills, breeding unlocks, "daddy" drops, and the eternal quest for sober cunnilingus critiques (handicap for drunk ratings TBA). Life Larks: Gray-stripe beards from beaver buffets, undercut head-holds mid-BJ, Hinge cougar chaos, and sex-swing salvation for creaky knees. Pop Picks: Benson Boone's goat-bleat remix hate, Bull Durham trope mastery, and a plea for Ariana Kettle-corn nudes (send help, Freddy).

Listen in as we discuss the film and this case of desperation, savagery, and the juxtaposition of the high society of Los Angeles against the street tough world of drugs and crime. This will be the last True Crime California Podcast we post here, so please be sure to follow the new podcast anywhere you listen! This week, we take a look at the very well known and horrifying case of the Wonderland Murders. This case involves a slew of then-well-known names, including one John Holmes, otherwise known as Johnny Wadd, a famous (or infamous) adult film star and all around trash bag human being. From humble beginnings to incredible fame to a drug induced fall from grace, this man single handedly caused so much chaos and death for those around him, the story is almost unbelievable. However, anything is possible in Hollywood, especially in the drug fueled 1980's. Even, as you will see, a crime so bold and out in the open, it's absolutely wild that this quadruple murder, known also as the 'four on the floor' murders, is still unsolved. True Crime California Instagram: @truecrimecaliforniaSources:Malice In Wonderland: The Inside Story of the Police Investigation of The Laurel Canyon Murders, Tom Lange and Robert SouzaThe Road Through Wonderland: Surviving John Holmes, Dawn Schillerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Holmes_(actor)https://www.michaelconnelly.com/wonderland-murders/https://www.thedailybeast.com/a-prison-interview-with-scott-thorson-wonderland-murders-witness-and-liberaces-pet/

But what of the band's wilderness years, the mid- to late-1990s? The 108th episode of Radical Research digs into what its hosts consider to be Napalm Death's most radical music, the four-album futurist blitzkrieg spanning the years 1994-1998. Get ready for some serious side-eye, Legions, as we cross over into the torn apart. Note I: In the episode, Hunter mentions Ian Christe's writing on the band's 1994 album, Fear, Emptiness, Despair. In Christe's Sound of the Beast, he writes that the album, "...started a fresh chapter in the history of a band whose membership half-life had once lasted no longer than an album side. Previous urban hardcore noise blasts were mowed by sophisticated guitar layering and innovative drum patterns. Their dissonance became a conscious component of the composition, not merely a side benefit of chaos, and the marriage of intense anger and calculation yielded a masterpiece of passionate, politically minded, negative realism." This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

This month we launched an all new season of BADLANDS, and we're bringing you a preview here. This is the show where DISGRACELAND host Jake Brennan blends history and true crime to tell the transgressive stories of some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including the mysterious deaths of Marilyn Monroe and Natalie Wood…Tim Allen's former career as a low-level drug dealer…the curse of the movie Poltergeist…how porn star John Holmes got caught up in the infamous Wonderland murders…and more episodes on Winona Ryder, River Phoenix, Gianni Versace, Robin Williams, Heath Ledger, Sharon Tate, Robert Downey Jr., and so many more. Search BADLANDS to hear 70+ episodes, including this new episode on Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp prefers the shadows to the limelight, whether he's building a bomb with Hunter S. Thompson in the Rocky Mountains, or downing bootleg quaaludes laced with arsenic. After emerging as the leading art flick actor of the 1990s, prodding paparazzi's desire to paint him as a “novelty boy” often drove him to outbursts that ended in arrests, wrecked hotel rooms, and a miffed Kate Moss and Roger Daltrey. Yet even with camera flashes constantly lighting up his private life, plenty of mysteries still surround Johnny Depp…including the unsolved disappearance of his former Viper Room co-owner – who went missing just days before he was supposed to testify against Johnny in court.
