Emily Pappas holds a M.S. in Exercise Physiology from Temple University and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Drexel University. Through this education, Emily values her ability to coach athletes with a perspective that is grounded in biochemistry and human physiology. Outside of the classroom, Emily has experience coaching and programming at the Division I Collegiate Level working as the assistant strength coach for Temple University's Women's Rugby team. In addition, Emily holds her USAW Sport Performance certification and values her ability to coach athletes using “Olympic” Weightlifting. Emily is extremely passionate about the sport of Weightlifting, not only for the competitive nature of the sport, but also for the application of the lifts as a tool in the strength & conditioning field. Through these lifts, Emily has been able to develop athletes that range from grade school to nationally ranked athletes in sports such as lacrosse, softball, and field hockey. During her years in the class and weight room, Emily came to realize that most female athletes never get exposed to strength training until much later in their athletic careers compared to their male counterparts. She realized most females strayed away from the weight room due to intimidation of a predominately male environment as well as fearing that lifting will get them too “big” (a misconception that has been around for WAY too long). Emily developed the idea of Relentless Athletics as a means to educate female athletes, parents and coaches on the necessity of strength training and sports nutrition education to optimize sports performance and reduce injury risks in the female athlete population. Emily is also an Adjunct at Temple University, instructing a course on the current research behind female athlete development. Pappas shares on PHIT for a Queen that preventing injury in young female athletes comes down to recovery. Humans are able to adapt to about anything if provided enough recovery for the training modality. We have not really portrayed female athletes in science the way we should. The research is far behind in understanding the menstrual cycle and in claiming that certain hormones cause injuries.   The majority of young female athletes have menstrual cycle irregularity, primarily related to energy availability. Studies are beginning to show a relationship between those irregularities and soft tissue injuries. In an overuse injury, we are chronically exposing the tissue to more force than it’s able to handle or recover from. We need to increase the strength of muscles, tendons, and ligaments and also learn to move our bodies in coordination so more muscle fibers within a muscle or more muscles, in general, are working together to absorb these forces.  Strength training must progressively overload and then allow for recovery. Strength training is so important for any female athlete, regardless of whether she has any type of “predisposed risk” to injury or not. There is no adaptation without recovery. Some of the best athletes in the world are training hours and hours a week, but they are improving because they are notching that hard work with the appropriate recovery. EMILY PAPPAS, M.S. EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY WHY is there a disparity of women in the weight room compared to men? It all derives from how women have been viewed in sport since the early 1900s. Why females view lifting as a guy thing stems from years and years of misinformation and cultivation of societal norms that are currently inhibiting our female athletes success. Emily brings to light these common myths: 1. Q angle, Hormones, and Injury risks ( Alluding it is due to a "structural deficiency" perpetuates a culture that assumes females are less fit for sport. When in fact SOME females have wider hips, some do not. ACL injuries were considered an epidemic 10 years after females were allowed to engage in sport under the NCAA umbrella....yet those females were not pushed to the weight room like men. Rather than explaining this epidemic as a structural or hormonal default, we need to consider the overall systemic strength of our female athletes). 2. Lifting makes you bulky: this statement is not only incorrect but fails to recognize the neurological adaptations gained in strength training (beyond a small amount of "mass") that aids in athletic performance 3. MISSED PERIODS ARE NORMAL FOR FEMALES: completely false and a disastrous mindset. Missing periods (outside of other health issues like PCOS) are defined by REDs as due to low energy availability. This could be a entire topic in itself talking about the relationship females have with food, fear of carbs, lack of protein, body composition anxiety, and how simple nutrition education is the key to helping solve these problems. 4. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES:t o help regulate periods (again completely false and a misguided belief that could actually lead to long term low bone density as the female ages) 5. LIFTING TOO YOUNG IS DANGEROUS: this is a huge one that applies to males as well How we as coaches can help educate our parents, other coaches, and our athletes on the importance of strength training and how to create an environment that encourages females...   Emily Pappas holds a master's of science in Kinesiology & Exercise Physiology and is the founder of Relentless Athletics.
