Podcast 288 – Smart Branding and Apartment Density Transformed Chamblee Over the Last Decade – Van Pappas Chamblee has rebranded, reimagined, and revitalized itself. Van Pappas shares how smart city planning and a bold branding push turned an industrial corridor into one of North DeKalb's hottest areas. The key? Apartment density, a clear identity, and big community pride. Van was there from the start, on the branding committee that helped bring the iconic red Chamblee sign to Peachtree Boulevard. He explains how signage isn't just decoration, it is declaration. Van also dives into starting his Chamblee Area Restaurant Review Facebook Group during Covid, and growing it nearly as large as my Dunwoody version. What began as a way to support struggling restaurants became a digital town square, where locals post reviews and swap recommendations. The Chamblee Rail Trail is more than a sidewalk. Van breaks down how the trail is expanding to connect key parts of the city and tie into a larger regional network. With plans to link Chamblee to Doraville's Assembly development, Brookhaven's greenways, and eventually the BeltLine, the trail is redefining how locals experience the city, without ever getting in a car. Linking histories of women, relationships to the natural environment, material culture and art, in Embroidering the Landscape: Women, Art and the Environment in British North America, 1740–1770 (Lund Humphries, 2023) Dr. Andrea Pappas presents a new, multi-dimensional view of eighteenth-century American culture from a unique perspective. This book investigates how and why women pictured the landscape in their needlework. It explores the ways their embroidered landscapes address the tumultuous environmental history of the period; how their depictions of nature differ from those made by men; and what women's choices of motifs can tell us about their lives and their relationships to nature. Embroidering the Landscape situates these pastoral and georgic needleworks (c. 1740-1775) at the intersection of environmental and social histories, interpreting them through ecocritical and social lenses. Dr. Pappas' investigation draws out connections between women's depicted landscapes and environmental and cultural history at a time when nature itself was a charged arena for changes in agriculture, husbandry, gardening, and the emerging discourses of botany and natural history. Her insights change our understanding of the relationship between culture and the environment in this period and raise new questions about the unrecognized extent of women's engagement with nature and natural science. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Join Jim and Greg for Monday's 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss President Trump urging former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu to run for U.S. Senate in 2026, confusion among Trump's own advisers over the purpose and length of the latest tariffs, and new reporting on how The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg ended up in a classified White House Signal chat about Yemen.First, they break down President Trump's full support for former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for U.S. Senate in 2026. Trump also revealed that he and Sununu had spoken about the race in the Oval Office. It's a notable shift in their relationship, which has previously been tense. They also examine the likely Democratic opponent and key dynamics that could shape the race.Next, Jim analyzes the weekend talk show appearances by several Trump administration officials attempting to explain the new tariffs. He demonstrates how Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, NEC Director Kevin Hassett, trade adviser Peter Navarro, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick offered conflicting statements about the tariffs' purpose, duration, and expected economic impact. Finally, they react to the apparent explanation for how Jeffrey Goldberg gained access to a White House Signal chat about military strikes in Yemen. They dig into the details and why this explanation makes more sense, but Jim still warns that private messaging apps like Signal are not secure enough for these discussions. Please visit our great sponsors:BetterHelp sponsors this podcast.
