In this episode, Coach Will is joined by coaches Gillis and Zach for a Q&A roundtable. The three take on the great carb debate! Should you be tracking net carbs or total carbs? Should people stay away from starchy carbs? The three will also cover frequently asked questions about meal tracking and whether or not to weigh your food raw or cooked. Other topics covered include determining what amount of weight you should put on the bar when starting a strength training program and how activation exercises are an essential part of any warm-up routine for your workout. Finally, Will, Gillis, and Zach go into deep detail on finding a balance between your physique goal and the lifestyle you enjoy and how to get out of the crushing cycle of comparison syndrome.

In this podcast, Kyle Hunt and I discuss powerlifting. While I've written a bit about powerlifting in the past and done some powerlifting-style training myself, I wanted to get a true expert in the field onto the podcast to chat about it in a bit more detail. In case you're not familiar with Kyle, he's a competitive powerlifter, coach, author, and owner of Hunt Fitness, who's worked with hundreds of powerlifters and bodybuilders alike. He's also the host of The Absolute Strength Podcast, which I've been a guest on a couple of times, and he's appeared on Muscle For Life twice before to discuss powerbuilding and bodybuilding for beginners. Even if you don't aspire to be the world's strongest lifter and have no intention of competing at a meet, powerlifting still has something to offer. At the very least, a powerlifting training block can help add some spice to your training life and keep things interesting. In this interview, Kyle Hunt addresses common misconceptions about powerlifting, technique tweaks, what a powerlifting routine might look like, equipment recommendations, why you should consider participating in a powerlifting meet, meet strategies, and a lot more. So, if you're at all interested in trying powerlifting or just want to know more about what it is, this is a podcast you don't want to miss! Timestamps: 8:07 - Who should do powerlifting? 15:00 - Why you shouldn't always be grinding out your sets. 17:27 - What are some common misconceptions about powerlifting 24:00 - How much of a difference does technique improvement make? Should you increase frequency? 29:41 - Why are heavy singles beneficial? 33:58 - What role does confidence play in your strength and performance? 35:56 - Attempt selection strategy. 37:15 - Should you go for the heaviest lift on your third attempt? 40:31 - How can someone get started with powerlifting? 43:12 - Why should you consider doing a powerlifting meet? 45:22 - Weight class discussion. 49:12 - Should you do cardio during a powerlifting program? 57:06 - What's a good program to get started with powerlifting? 59:41 - How do you assess one powerlifting program versus another? 1:04:40 - What type of weightlifting belt do you recommend? 1:06:10 - What shoes do you recommend? 1:15:53 - Where can people find you and your work? Strength training is critical for runners who want to get the most out of their training. While it's easy to skimp on weights in favor of running more miles, weight training for runners has so many benefits: Increased speed and power Greater running economy that helps improve endurance The ability to handle a greater workload (i.e., you can run more!) Improved injury resistance In short, there's no good reason NOT to strength train if you're a runner! To help answer all of your questions about strength, Tony Gentilcore has joined us. He's a former collegiate baseball player who graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY-Cortland with a degree in Health Education with a concentration in Health and Wellness Promotion. After almost going pro in baseball, he worked as a personal trainer for several years in NY, CT, and MA. Tony opened a sports performance gym with two other trainers that has grown into one of the premier baseball training facilities on the east coast. He has contributed his strength training expertise to numerous publications, including T-Nation, The Boston Herald, and BodyBuilding.com, amongst others. In today's podcast, Tony addresses many common questions related to weight lifting. But this episode is unique because the questions come directly from members of our High Performance Lifting Program, including the following: How do runners find a great strength coach or gym? What are the top 1-3 things to look for? Should strength training routines be modified for older runners? If an athlete wants to avoid any Olympic lifts but still wants to develop power and explosivity, are there alternative exercises that would be helpful? How can runners tell if they are over or under training with regard to strength? Check out the podcast to hear the answers to these questions and more. These questions are only a sample from the full 90min Q&A! Be sure to join HPL so you can get your hands on the full conversation! Thank you Elemental Labs! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.
