In this episode we check in with Eric Schranz. As most of you know, Eric is the co-founder of one of the most popular media sources in our sport, ultrarunnerpodcast.com.  We talk about the state of his podcast and newsletter, what make a good interview, his favorite conversations over the past decade, the good, the bad, and the ugly of how our sport is changing, and we get his thoughts on the scene at the Broken Arrow Sky Race series earlier this month. The conversation jumped all over the place, but in a way that felt authentic. If you are someone who enjoys pure banter about our sport, you will like this episode.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/singletracknews)

Matt B. Davis is widely known in the Obstacle Course racing world and is the founder and face of Obstacle Racing Media and is also the podcast host.  Matt is also race director for numerous Obstacle Course races. Matt has an incredible sense of humor and there is a lot of laughter in this episode.  But this episode is about a serious topic that is not talked about often enough, depression, especially bipolar disease.  Matt shows incredible bravery in telling his story and this is an important discussion for all of us to participate in so we can learn and be available to help others in our lives when they are ready for taking the step to get help. Today’s Guest Matt B. Davis, former stand-up-comic, Journalist, and Obstacle Course racer is the co-founder, face and voice of Obstacle Racing Media.  He is also the podcast host of the Atlanta Podcast and of Tough Mudder Facebook Live.  He and His wife and 3 kids live in Atlanta. What you will learn about: Why Matt thinks you should try an obstacle race and how you never regret trying something new How Matt discovered in December 2016 that he suffered from bipolar disease when he went into a severe depression after a manic episode.  He made comments on his podcasts and Facebook about how he was suffering and was amazed at the overwhelming support he got from his listeners. Depression gives you the sense that you have been let into a secret, and the secret is life is meaningless. Running would allow him to shut off his brain a little bit, but most of the time he was still feeling that it was useless. He got help by attending an outpatient program, reluctantly, at the time attending group therapy sessions. All you can do is meet the person where they are at, and offer to give them whatever help they are ready to accept.  Let them know you are available for them in whatever they need. Things to recognize if a friend is headed down the path of depression:  lacking in communication/avoiding communication; if they stop taking medications is a big one. Yoga and meditation, gratitude lists are all helpful in dealing with depression.  Get your friends to participate in a Gratitude List circle as it can give you even more insight.  Send your gratitude lists to your friends.  Inspirational Quotes: All you can do to help someone is to meet them where they are; if they are not ready for help there is little you can do to push them toward change. Running absolutely helped me and I don’t know that I would be here without it. We all need that one person in our life we can confide in and share with, and it is probably best if it is not your spouse. Eric Schranz: How to Develop a Love of the Outdoors and Passion in Your Kids - R4R 078

The Running for Real Podcast

Host and founder of the UltraRunnerPodcast, Eric Schranz has run everything from a beer mile to 200 mile races and says he loves every distance and race. He is a stay at home dad and lives with his wife and 2 kids in Northern CA. Beer is a common thread on his shows, which include craft beer reviews. Our conversation focuses on how to develop a love of the outdoors and building a passion in our children without pushing them too hard. And never using running or sport as a punishment. We also cover the balance between running with our kids and building our relationship with them, with wanting and needing to get in our own training for both our fitness and our time to decompress. If you have kids or spend time thinking about balance in your life, you will enjoy this discussion. Today’s Guest Eric Schranz, Ultra Runner and Podcast host has run the 2013 Bryce 100 mile race but had to pass at an opportunity to run Western States and instead ran 100 laps of a local park while he awaited the birth of his first daughter. Schranz started the Ultrarunningpodcast as a hobby with three friends, never expecting it to take off and make him one of the best known voices of Ultrarunning. What you will learn about: What to do with leftover spinach in your fridge before it gets slimy. How he felt nervous interviewing Ann Trason (greatest female ultrarunner) when she returned to the Ultrarunning scene but mostly he feels he is just having a conversation with all the people you are standing next to in the porta-potty line. Interviewing and knowing some of those at “the top” are just normal people and they have the same issues we all have. They are just people who happen to be really good at a sport. How he has had to learn to check his own competitiveness and stubbornness in order to not influence his kids so as to let them develop their own interests and drives. I am trying to impart a love of running and being outdoors to them but then to let them develop their own interests. How he wrote an article about his daughter Sunny and her competitive drive and how she likes to do things that are hard. She ran the Broken Arrow Sky Race 10k recently at 8 yrs old, with Ladia Albertson-Junkans as her coach on the run. Sky races have unusual distances and elevation requirements. Ladia ran the 52k the day before but agreed as a favor to run along with Sunny to coach her along and be sure she was safe. How he has learned from Sunny about how to run naturally and with near perfect form as only kids just naturally can do. The nice thing about the Ultrarunning community is that volunteerism is a strong value and an important one to teach our kids (and ourselves), seeing others out there struggling and persevering/carrying on. How we don’t encourage kids to take up running as a sport and something they can do for a lifetime.   Inspirational Quotes: Don’t get hurt or your mom will kill you (and then me). We only have so many days and months left in our lives and you gotta make that time count. And doing it with my kids is so much more worthwhile than doing it on my own. This week I was fortunate enough to chat with Eric Schranz, the host of the absolutely wonderful Ultrarunner Podcast! Years ago I binged a bunch of his episodes and then decided to sign up for my first 50k. So yeah...it's his fault that I'm an ultrarunner! In fact, if you are curious about looking into the sport of ultrarunning, I would highly suggest that you check out the URP as it is a great resource to learn all about this crazy sport. Each week, Eric shares a wide variety of stories from the world of ultrarunning. From elite athletes to regular every day folks to simply some insane people running some insane events! He also highlights the diverse nature of the sport; everything from 100 mile point to point mountain runs to self supported stage races to events where participants literally run for days around high school tracks. All the while learning tips of the trade, hearing wild adventure stories from his guests, and nerding out over some of the biggest events in the sport. Seriously, one of the best sports podcasts out there! I was excited to geek out with Eric about podcasting and the sport of ultrarunning while hearing more about his own running career. In this episode he tells us the best event to start with for all the people pursuing their first ultrarunning event, explains the joys of alpine horning (is that the correct verbiage?), enlightens us on the benefits of running circles around the a city park for 24 straight hours, and why ultrarunners need to be adaptable. We had a great chat and I fully believe that the content on Ultrarunner Podcast is at an all time high in the over the last few episodes (Barkley Marathon, TransAmericana, etc) so please check it out! www.ultrarunnerpodcast.com Eric also shares the "URP Daily News" which is a daily update on all things trail running, outdoor sports, running wisdom, and beer. http://ultrarunnerpodcast.com/category/daily-news/ If you enjoyed this episode, please check out the rest of the Like a Bigfoot episodes. Not all the stories are ultrarunning related, but I promise that you will find motivation, achievement strategies, stories of adventure, wilderness and plenty of tales with blisters and suffering! You can find them on Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/chris-ward-126531464 Or subscribe to the iTunes feed for a new episode every single week https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/like-a-bigfoot/id1160773293?mt=2 Next week we are sharing stories of insane endurance events from race director Candice Burt (Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and much more). See you then!!! Keep Bigfootin'!
