I sit down with Doc, the voice behind Hiker Trash Radio—a podcast that's interviewed over 450 adventurers from thru-hikers to Barkley Marathons legends. We dive deep into Doc's wild behind-the-scenes experience covering the 2024 Barkley Marathons as a first-time invited media member. Sometimes you meet people and you can tell they will have some good stories. I met Andre at the Ohio Backyard Ultra (OBU) because we were crewing different runners. Our runners went on into the second day so I had the chance to chat with Andre and I wanted to have him on the podcast to talk about his style of backyard ultra that he race directs in Canada, along with race directing a race similar to the Barkley Marathons that Lazarus Lake puts in in Frozen Head State Park each spring. The races are very similar, but also some notable differences. We share all the secrets that Andre is willing to share in the episode and hope you enjoy it!Bush Bitches Backyard (BBBackyard) website: https://www.bbbackyard.com/BB Trail Running Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bbbackyardultra

Isobel's daughter Elizabeth comes on the podcast to share her experience as crew at The Barkley Marathons.
Chris Fisher and Erin Ton are very down-to-Earth people, but they are also way-up-in-the-air. As in, they are almost constantly on a mountain, very high mountains. And when I say constantly, I mean they are pretty much always climbing, running on, and exploring mountains, as well as challenging themselves in the wildest wildernesses. Erin is known for setting hordes of FKTs, speeding through the gauntlet of Colorado 14ers in record time, as well as climbing 14ers in high heels. Yep, you heard that right. She and Chris, who owns the current record for the least time to climb all of the 14ers in winter, spent all of last summer bagging Colorado 13ers – of which there are 100s – several of them each day. They explored Patagonia for several weeks earlier this year, taking like they always do, heaps of absolutely jaw-dropping photos of their climbs and the scenery. Chris then took on the now-infamous Barkley Marathons, so definitely listen closely to learn more about this insane, unique race. Erin and Chris describe his battle against the course, that was made even tougher this year because of the unprecedented number of finishers last year – five – the heat the runners faced, the camaraderie with some legendary Barkley participants, and of course, enigmatic race director Laz. Later on, Erin also nailed a couple of FKTs on the gnarly course herself. They are now headed to the Himalayas, where in addition to their own projects and FKT attempts that you'll hear about here, they will be supporting our mutual friend Tyler Andrews in his unfathomable attempt to set the record for running up and down Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. There really isn't a dull moment in this very fun chat with this power duo of the mountains, who will absolutely inspire you to find adventure in the outdoors yourself, so I'm sure you'll enjoy this chat.Chris FisherInstagram @chrisjfishStrava Christopher FisherCheck out Chris' film Nine Hours on Manaslu on LaSportiva's YouTube channelErin TonInstagram @erin_ton7Strava Erin TonTyler Andrews' podcast: Ty's Training: Talking with my DadBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

Ihor Verys, is a distinguished ultramarathon runner based in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Originally from Chornomorsk, Ukraine, he moved to Canada in 2015 at the age of 20 to pursue studies at Assiniboine College in Brandon, Manitoba. Initially taking up running for mental well-being, Verys transitioned from road running to trail and ultramarathon events during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2024, Verys achieved international recognition by completing the Barkley Marathon in Tennessee, a race notorious for its grueling conditions and high failure rate. He finished in 58 hours, 44 minutes, and 59 seconds, becoming the first Canadian(and Ukranian) to complete the race. In January 2025, UltraRunning Magazine named Verys the 10th UltraRunner of the Year for 2024, acknowledging his rapid ascent in the ultrarunning community and his remarkable achievements within a short timeframe.Balancing his athletic pursuits with a professional career, Verys works as a Commercial Insurance Account Manager at HUB International.Follow Ihor:https://www.instagram.com/ihorverys/Link to Dr.Chris Bertram (Episode 165) mentionedhttps://bit.ly/42bvSG

What do a mysterious metal orb and a sadistic ultramarathon have in common? They're both ready to ruin your weekend—and they're both in this episode of The Box of Oddities. First, Kat and Jethro roll into the strange saga of the Betz Sphere—a shiny, sentient-looking ball discovered in Florida that might be haunted, alien... or just really into Foghat. Then, lace up for the Barkley Marathons, the grueling backwoods race that has chewed up Navy SEALs and spit out their shoelaces. With no official start time, no GPS, and a course mapped in blood and sarcasm, it's less “fun run” and more “forest-based psychological thriller.” From paranormal spheres to sadistic sprints, this episode dives headfirst into the bizarre. We dive into the grueling Barkley Marathons, where no finishers crossed the line this year, proving once again why it's called the "Race That Eats Its Young." Then, we unravel the wild story of Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder turned fugitive, with the FBI offering $10 million for his capture as he's linked to a violent drug trafficking network spanning Colombia to Canada. We also break down the buzz around Jameis Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, now joining the New York Giants in 2025—could he be the veteran bridge to their next franchise QB? Plus, we spotlight Quincy Wilson, the teenage track sensation whose jaw-dropping speed and charisma have skyrocketed his popularity, making him a household name among sports fans and a social media darling. We also expose a secret food laboratory working to bypass the effects of Ozempic, as Big Food fights back against weight loss drugs by rewiring your brain to crave processed snacks. Along the way, we debate the best old guy phrases like "look what the cat dragged in," share a heartwarming golden retriever tale in our No Bad, No Sad segment, and revisit jaw-dropping moments like a photographer colliding with runners at the ACC Championships. Ron and I chat about my Barkley experience! And boy, was it an experience. This is a tale of trials and tribulations: enjoy!

The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind dives into the legendary Barkley Marathons this week, an ultramarathon so brutal it's been dubbed "The Race That Eats Its Young." Join us as we explore this mysterious 100+ mile event through Tennessee's unforgiving Frozen Head State Park, where runners navigate by compass through briar-filled terrain with 65,000 feet of elevation change. Discover the eccentric traditions created by founder "Lazarus Lake," from the unpredictable cigarette-lit start to the somber playing of "Taps" for fallen runners. With only 22 finishers since 1986, this isn't just an ultramarathon—it's an almost mythical challenge that represents the outer limits of human endurance. Whether you're an aspiring ultrarunner or just fascinated by extreme sporting events, you won't want to miss this deep dive into one of running's most notorious and captivating challenges.
The Barkley Marathons is an ultra-endurance race that challenges participants both physically and mentally. Kia ora e te whānau. Jasmin Paris was rocketed into the wider consciousness when she became the first woman to finish Barkley Marathons, with 99 seconds to spare. Ironically, for a race that eschewed publicity for so long, the photos of Paris sending the final 100 metres or so to the yellow gate are arguably more famous than the Barkley itself. Whilst this may be Jasmin's best known achievement, it's far from her only one. Spine winner, Bob Graham Round holder, fell running champion, senior lecturer in veterinary science, Mother and partner. Jasmin's life is full. Ali and Matt spoke to Jasmin about all this, and Green Runners, the organisation she co-founded with Damian Hall to advocate for, and address climate issues related to the sport of running and the wider world. We hope you enjoy this conversation, and are at least as stoked and inspired as we were. Unless you spent 2024 hiding out in some remote Tennessee woods, you're probably aware that Jasmin Paris became the first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons.
