In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year's event. Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100. St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois.

Ailsa Macdonald is no stranger to endurance sports. She began competing in Triathlons in her early 20s and went on to win the Canadian National Ironman in 2018 and Ironman Santa Rosa 2019. Before that, she tried her hand at ultra running and in 2017 she won both the Canadian National 50k race and was the first winner overall at the Canadian National 100 miler at Sinister 7. Her road to Western States started when she won the Black Canyon 100k beating Courtney Dauwalter to earn her a Golden Ticket in 2018. Things didn't go to plan at WS100 2018 so she earned her second Golden Ticket with a win at Bandera 100k in 2020 and winning Tarewara 2020. Now she waits to cash in that Golden Ticket for WS100 2022. Sarah Seads from British Columbia began her running journey as an adventure racer. While she enjoyed multi discipline sports, she found herself excelling as a solo runner. Not shy of long distances, the first ultra she completed was the Canadian Death Race, 125km in Grande Cache, Alberta. After the Death Race, Sarah set her sights on Western States 100. Her ticket race was The Lost Soul Ultra where she either won or placed the 3 times she completed them. Sarah became one of the Lucky Canadians when her name was called for the 2020 WS100. Now she waits until she can finally compete. Here is her story.. The PodiumRunner Endurance Podcast is hosted by Ian Sharman, a professional ultra runner and coach with over 200 marathons or ultra finishes and more than 50 wins (www.sharmanultra.com, @sharmanian). We discuss training and racing topics with leading sports scientists and how to practically apply research findings for marathoners and ultra runners. Episode 13: Group Training Advantages with Yassine Diboun In this episode we're talking to my good friend, Yassine Diboun. He's a father, husband, co-owner of Wy'east Wolfpack @wyeastwolfpack, coach, Columbia Sportswear athlete, living in Portland, Oregon. He started in triathlon in 2005, and then moved towards longer road runs like marathons. He completed and won, with a course record, his very first ultra marathon in 2007, and hasn't looked back since. He's also a 4 x WS100 finisher, 3x HURT 100 finisher, 1x UTMB finisher and has represented Team USA at the World Trail Championships in 2015. His Wy'east Wolfpack group does personal coaching, group training via fitness classes, and running clinics. He also leads group track workouts for RUN TRG and group trail runs. Another program he created is trail running camps for young people, including minorities, instilling movement and running from an early age. The Wy'east Wolfpack website also has a wide variety of BLM-related links with organizations and people to follow, articles and books to read, and podcasts to listen to. This show is about group training, community and how it helps us become better runners and live fulfilling lives. We discuss: Yassine's work as a coach with the various groups mentioned above; the benefits of different types of group training scenarios for improved fitness, plus for the mental health gains and what we can learn from other runners; how to do epic adventure runs with friends and why they're a great idea; his experience as a BIPOC runner and how sport brings people together, plus what we call all do to help on a daily basis.
