Welcome back to the podcast! With summer officially here, we've found ourselves having a lot of conversations about something that many parents seem to be wrestling with right now: how do you raise hardworking, capable, confident kids without accidentally raising entitled ones? We're not coming to this conversation as experts who have it all figured out. In fact, we're right in the middle of it ourselves. As our kids get older, we're constantly asking questions about responsibility, work, money, freedom, and what it looks like to prepare them for adulthood. One thing we've noticed is that almost every parent we talk to is carrying some version of the same concern. Are we teaching our kids enough? Have we given them too much? Are they ready for the real world? Recently we found ourselves in conversations with other parents who were expressing many of the exact same fears. And honestly, it was reassuring. It reminded us that most parents care deeply about raising great kids and are doing the best they can while trying to navigate challenges that previous generations didn't necessarily face in the same way. A big part of this discussion comes back to the relationship between responsibility and opportunity. We've been thinking a lot about what we pay for, what our kids pay for, and how to create clear expectations around things like cars, phones, spending money, and privileges. Not because we want to make life harder for our kids, but because we've seen how powerful it is when people earn something for themselves. There's a confidence that comes from contributing, working, sacrificing, and learning that freedom is often connected to responsibility. The goal isn't to create struggle for the sake of struggle. It's to help our kids discover that they're capable of doing hard things and creating opportunities for themselves. Another idea we've been discussing is the difference between entitlement and empowerment. We recently came across a perspective that challenged us to think differently about how families support the next generation. It raised questions about family businesses, shared resources, multigenerational living, and what intentional support could look like as children become adults. We don't have all the answers, but we do think it's worth asking the question: what kind of future are we intentionally designing for our family instead of simply drifting into? At the end of the day, this episode isn't really about summer jobs, cell phones, curfews, or snacks. It's about intentionality. It's about deciding what values matter most to your family and then creating systems that reinforce those values. Whether your kids are five, fifteen, or twenty-five, one of the greatest gifts we can give them is the opportunity to become capable, confident, and responsible adults. And sometimes that starts by asking a simple question: are we creating conditions that help them rise—or conditions that make growth optional? In this episode of the Especially for Athletes podcast, Dustin Smith and Shad Martin revisit a powerful insight shared by former NFL All-Pro Eric Weddle about the “fine line between average and great.” What follows is a deep discussion on consistency, sacrifice, self-motivation, preparation, humility, and the daily habits that separate people who merely dream from people who actually develop greatness. The conversation explores why we often romanticize greatness instead of recognizing the discipline behind it, why consistency matters more than motivation, and how small daily choices eventually become extraordinary outcomes. The episode also dives into practical ways athletes, parents, coaches, and young people can create routines of excellence and build resilient habits that last. This episode is a reminder that greatness usually isn't dramatic—it's accumulated.Key Takeaways Greatness is usually accumulated, not inherited. Consistency matters more than temporary motivation. Small daily choices create long-term success. Most people romanticize greatness because it removes responsibility from themselves. Preparation allows people to capitalize on opportunity. Humility is essential if you want to improve. Motivation fades quickly; disciplined routines endure. Sacrifice is often the difference between average and great. Winning the battle with yourself is the most important competition. Developing skill requires patience and repetition long before anyone notices.Main Topics & Timestamps15:23 — Why revisit old podcast moments?Dustin and Shad explain the new podcast format and why certain past conversations deserve deeper attention.19:29 — Why do we romanticize greatness?Discussion on why people often attribute success to talent instead of discipline and sacrifice.24:04 — Capitalizing on opportunityThe role of preparation, timing, and work ethic in becoming successful.26:52 — Greatness is accumulatedWhy consistency matters more than flashes of motivation.28:38 — “You'll never go broke taking a profit”A football analogy about small victories and daily progress.32:03 — Motivation vs. consistencyWhy self-motivation matters more than external inspiration.35:39 — Tactical plans create progressHow routines and daily habits help athletes avoid procrastination.38:33 — Humility and seeking mentorshipWhy improvement requires asking successful people for help.43:09 — Routine creates greatnessBuilding systems and habits instead of waiting to “feel motivated.”46:11 — Talent vs. skillWhy talent alone is never enough without disciplined development.Full Episode with Erik Weddlehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWnB-UzhfdY&list=PLjow7UW4zcvU3CC2U5jUnrGEIbhbwhm0b&index=115⸻Especially for Athletes: Website: https://e4a.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EspeciallyForAthletes/ X: https://x.com/E4Afamily Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/especiallyforathletes/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmbWc7diAvstLMfjBL-bMMQJoin the conversation using #E4APodcast⸻Credits: Hosted by Dustin Smith & Shad MartinProduced by E4A and IMAGINATE STUDIO

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles Zona is joined by his daughter Lily for a conversation about her journey into live music — starting from the very beginning. The episode opens with a throwback to Charles's first-ever podcast test recording, where an 11-year-old Lily had never been to a concert. From there, Lily traces her love of Harry Styles back to the COVID era, when her mom played his album Fine Line around the house. That early introduction blossomed into a full-blown fandom, and when Harry's House dropped and the tour kicked off, the family set their sights on seeing him live — not in Chicago, but in Lisbon, Portugal. What followed was a months-long ordeal to secure Lily's passport in time for the show. After the initial application was denied due to an improperly notarized form — and then delayed a second time because the passport agency itself had sent an outdated version of the required document — the family found themselves scrambling with barely days to spare. Charles details the frantic calls to the passport agency, the last-ditch email to Illinois representative Sean Casten, and the miraculous late-night moment when Lily checked the passport status on her dad's phone and discovered it had shipped. They picked it up Monday morning and were on a flight to Portugal that afternoon, arriving just in time for the Tuesday night concert at the 60,000-capacity Passeio Marítimo de Algés. The concert itself didn't disappoint. Lily and Charles describe the electric atmosphere, from 60,000 fans belting out Bohemian Rhapsody before the show to Harry's Alan Watts-inspired intro and the surprise appearance by Wet Leg. Lily shares her favorite moments, including an intimate acoustic performance of Matilda on the catwalk and a close encounter during Late Night Talking. The episode wraps up with a look at Lily's growing concert resume — including Olivia Rodrigo at Lollapalooza 2025 (with a surprise Weezer cameo) and up-and-coming country artist Maddox Batson — plus the exciting news that the family has tickets to see Harry Styles again at Madison Square Garden on his upcoming Together, Together tour in support of his new album Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally. BANDS: Harry Styles, Lainey Wilson, Maddox Batson, Muscadine Bloodline, Olivia Rodrigo, Queen, Weezer, Wet Leg. VENUES: Allstate Arena, Grant Park (Lollapalooza), Madison Square Garden, Passeio Marítimo de Algés, Salt Shed, United Center. Wow. What a nail-biting encounter between Sri Lanka and Pakistan overnight. From record-breaking partnerships, to stunning collapses for both teams, to Shaheen Shah Afridi and Dasun Shanaka playing out a memorable last over, this match had everything. There was so much to talk about - almost too much for Raj and Baldy to handle in the immediate aftermath of a match that had so much to play for for Pakistan. In the end, Sri Lanka getting past 147 with a few overs to spare had Pakistan hopes vanquished and New Zealand hopes alive as the semi-finalists have been decided and Stu's blood pressure can creep back down to normal levels. What looms is a potential encounter in the semi-finals between New Zealand and South Africa. With Matt Henry heading home temporarily there's a little up in the air for New Zealand. Raj and Baldy dissect their chances and what will need to go right for New Zealand as they head back to India for the business end of the tournament. Before we get to the semi-finals there's the small matter* of the final Group 1 games between South Africa and Zimbabwe and India and the West Indies. For South Africa, it's got to be business as usual, but Zimbabwe have proven themselves dangerous and will play with nothing to lose. Their key players have already stood tall in the tournament to date and this is no lay down misere for South Africa. But the India versus the West Indies game is the big one - in essence a Quarter Final where the winner stay on and the loser exits the tournament. Do West Indies change their team? Should Hossein come into the line-up for the West Indies? Will Roston Chase play given how many left-handers India have? Raj and Baldy break down all the things that will need to go right for the West Indies to stop this Indian juggernaut from rolling through to the knockouts. * Kidding - these games are a huge deal. Volunteer burnout is not always caused by time, workload, or lack of commitment. In many cases, it happens when leaders begin to feel less effective in their roles. As confidence and enjoyment decline, even experienced volunteers may start to disengage or step away. In this episode, Tobi Johnson sits down with leadership performance coach Paul Clarke to discuss new research on why volunteer leaders struggle under pressure and what organizations can do to better support them. They explore the gap between knowing what to do and being able to apply those skills in real-world situations, along with the emotional and organizational challenges that impact long-term retention. If you lead volunteers or are building a leadership pipeline, this conversation will help you rethink development, communication, and support. You will gain practical insights to strengthen resilience, improve retention, and create an environment where volunteer leaders feel confident, connected, and motivated to continue making an impact. In this episode, Deborah Adele describes the razor's edge between Self-Expression and Self-Indulgence, using the yoga principle of Satya (Truthfulness). She makes the distinctions for us. Then using modern science, drawing from Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and behavioral techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I show how to use many of the interventions and ideas to actually put self-expression into practice. Additionally, discover why "dumping" your emotions is not the same as telling the truth, and learn practical skills like the DBT's DEAR MAN framework and the Gottmans' Soft Start-Up formula to communicate effectively without causing harm. In this episode, Kyle and Sean explore the often-blurry line between hope and denial. They unpack how hope can be powerful when it's grounded in reality, values, and daily action, and how it becomes harmful when it delays grieving, ignores body limits, or ties happiness to a future “if/then” outcome like a cure or treatment. Kyle and Sean reflect on how recognizing reality doesn't mean giving up, but rather building systems that allow life to keep moving forward. The Dudes close with an invitation for listeners to examine their own version of hope: where it's helping them stay engaged with life, and where denial might be quietly holding them back. As always, gratitude, humor, and honesty ground the conversation—reminding us that hope rooted in values, not outcomes, is what makes it sustainable.

In today's episode of The Be Yo'self Podcast, Torique dives into the fine line between right and wrong and just as importantly, truth and misinformation. In a time where headlines move fast and narratives get blurred, he unpacks how to slow down, think critically, and discern what's real versus what's simply loud. The conversation touches on viral claims surrounding former President Trump and alleged actions involving Venezuela's leadership, along with a mind-blowing incident in Minneapolis involving a woman and ICE agents that sparked widespread debate and confusion online. Rather than rushing to conclusions, Torique focuses on context, clarity, and responsibility in how we consume and share information.Through honest reflection and open dialogue, this episode challenges listeners to stay informed without losing perspective and to lead with wisdom, not reaction.Expect thoughtful moments, candid discussion, and practical insight on navigating today's information-heavy world with intention.
James 2 challenges us to examine whether our faith is dead or alive. Dead faith consists of empty words without action, like telling someone to be warm and fed while doing nothing to help them. Even demons have intellectual knowledge about God, but they remain unchanged. Living faith, however, produces tangible works that demonstrate genuine transformation. Abraham showed living faith by offering Isaac, and Rahab demonstrated it by helping the Israelite spies. True faith creates a partnership between belief and action, shaping how we lead our families spiritually, love our church, and live with purpose. The ultimate question is whether the life we're living is worthy of Christ's death on the cross.
As the holiday season sweeps through the Valley, host Janet Michael welcomes Captain Warren Gosnell of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office into the studio for a lively yet sobering episode of "The Valley Today." Their conversation, peppered with humor and personal anecdotes, dives deep into the realities of holiday travel, the temptations of modern technology, and the life-altering consequences of impaired driving. From Laughter to Lessons Janet and Goz kick off the episode with playful banter about live radio mishaps and the quirks of hosting. However, the tone quickly shifts as they reflect on the unique pressures and risks that come with the holidays. With families rushing from one gathering to another, the roads become a stage for both joyful reunions and potential tragedy. Goz shares stories from his own life, including the loss of family members to traffic accidents, underscoring the very real dangers that can lurk behind the wheel. The Technology Trap Transitioning to the role of technology, Janet confesses her own struggles as a concerned parent, debating whether to use Apple AirTags to track her adult son for his safety. This lighthearted exchange opens a broader discussion about privacy, responsibility, and the ways technology can both help and hinder our efforts to keep loved ones safe. Goz reminds listeners that, while tools like GPS and cell phones offer peace of mind, they are no substitute for honest conversations and personal accountability. Holiday Hazards and the Ripple Effect As the conversation unfolds, the duo addresses the spike in impaired driving during the festive season. Goz details the excuses he's heard from drivers—ranging from forgotten macaroni salad to tight holiday schedules—and dismantles the myths that often justify risky behavior. He emphasizes that the consequences of a single poor decision can ripple outward, affecting not just the driver but entire families and communities. Janet echoes this sentiment, recalling the emotional toll of delivering bad news to loved ones during what should be a joyful time. Practical Advice for a Safer Season Throughout the episode, both host and guest offer practical tips for listeners: plan your routes, arrange for designated drivers, and take advantage of free ride services offered by local businesses and organizations. They stress that celebrating responsibly is not just about avoiding legal trouble—it's about protecting lives and preserving the spirit of the season. A Call to Action As the show draws to a close, Janet and Goz return to their central message: everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but no one has the right to endanger others on the road. Their candid conversation serves as a timely reminder that the choices we make—especially during the holidays—can have lasting impacts. With warmth, wit, and wisdom, they urge listeners to prioritize safety, cherish their loved ones, and enter the new year with a renewed commitment to community well-being.

He reflects on how he's helped thousands start and grow landscaping businesses. Social Media Secrets & The POPP Method: The episode dives into Keith's success with social media and how it became a secondary, gratifying business. He unveils the POPP Method (“Passion Over Pressure to Peacock”), which helped his videos reach tens of thousands—even millions—of viewers, regardless of background or resources. He gives examples of mixing humor or high energy with professionalism to connect with viewers on a real, human level. "My truest passion isn't actually even running my own landscaping business. Having helped thousands start their own businesses, he's focused on guiding others to break free from poverty mindsets and achieve financial independence.
