In this interview, I'm incredibly honored to be joined by Courtney Dauwalter, one of the greatest ultrarunners of all time. For those unfamiliar with the ultrarunning world, Courtney has shattered expectations and rewritten records in some of the most grueling races on the planet.  In 2023, she became the first person ever to win the Western States 100, the Hardrock 100, and the UTMB all in the same year -- which is like the ultrarunning triple crown, an achievement that stands alone in the history of the sport. Known not only for her incredible endurance but also her positive attitude, sense of humor, and love of candy and nachos, Courtney has conquered races like the Moab 240 (a 240 mile race in Moab!), which she won by more than 10 hours, and the Big's Backyard Ultra, where she set a women's record of 279 miles. She's also renowned for her trademark "Shortney" baggy shorts, her love for the "Pain Cave," and her unique ability to push herself through the most difficult physical and mental challenges-- whether it's running through storms, climbing mountains, or even hallucinating friendly woodland creatures along the trail. In this episode, we talk about what Courtney has learned about the mental side of ultra-running and try to glean some lessons that we mere mortals can apply to our everyday challenges—things like problem-solving, positive self-talk, and mantras that keep her going for hours on end.   We'll we also explore how she stays grounded, connected to the community, and why she believes there's always another level we can reach if we just keep moving forward, and stay curious about what's possible. Courtney is like the Ted Lasso of running. I think her superpower is her curiosity. And speaking of curiosity, I want to give a special shoutout to our partners at Brooks Running! For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation.  Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. So… let's run there.   With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place.  Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, a finish line, a cure for Parkinson's, a cleaner environment, justice, or shattering what you previously thought was possible… Let's run there.  Head to BrooksRunning.com to learn more

Widely known as one of the top strength & conditioning Directors in the world, Simon Thomas curated his success at Super Rugby's most successful team, The Crusaders under head coach Scott “Razor” Robertson (now the All Blacks coach). Simon led the performance department at the Crusaders for four years resulting in three Super Rugby titles in 2017, 2018, 2019 & a Super Rugby Aotearoa title in 2020. While experiencing success with the Crusaders he was also working with Maori All Blacks in the International windows & consulted in Japan, Brazil & Argentina throughout. He left NZ to go to the US and build a new rugby environment in the MLR based on Austin Texas in 2021 and 2022. This was another valuable experience & Simon loved it in the US & the  exposure to the bigger US sporting environments as this was a big driver of wanting to leave his success behind him at New Zealand Rugby & take on a new challenge. He then came to Perth to work as Head of Performance with the Western Force Rugby team based in Western Australia under Simon Cron, and this is where this interview with JD podcast curator & host Andrew was held. Simon shares many fascinating stories from inside his time working in professional sport, the narratives that led to success at the Crusaders under the driving force of Razor, the athletes, and a mentor that influenced Simon greatly with her words, “live to create opportunities for others”.This podcast interview with Simon is a rare gem for coaches, athletes and leaders wanting to take some inspiration from a leader in the industry who has worked consistently with other leaders!Show sponsor Muvitality Medicinal Mushrooms for modern day health and wellness | Mu …Go to muvitality.com use code JD10 to receive a 10% discount on your purchase of Mu Functional mushrooms Here are some useful links for this podcastIG @westernforce   Linked In - https://au.linkedin.com/in/simon-thomas-5656b540Relevant episodesEpisode 91 - Becoming a “Mindset monster” with Super Rugby Human Performance & Mindset coach Davie Gray - https://podcasts.apple.com/hk/podcast/episode-91-becoming-a-mindset-monster-with-super/id1527374894?i=1000640880513Episode 88 - Damian Browne on The Power of Process and The Pain Cave - https://podcasts.apple.com/hk/podcast/episode-88-damian-browne-on-the-power-of-process/id1527374894?i=1000636640784JOINT DYNAMICS links:Joint Dynamics Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JointDynamicsHongKong/Joint Dynamics Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/jointdynamics/Joint Dynamics Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRQZplKxZMSvtc6LxM5WckwJoint Dynamics Website - www.jointdynamics.com.hk Host - Andrew Cox - https://www.jointdynamics.com.hk/the-team/trainers/andrew-cox

Before I go down this rabbit hole, I will explain where I heard this comment. An older candidate gave his opinion to a younger candidate when asked, "How are you crushing everything like you do?"  See full article at https://www.stewsmithfitness.com/blogs/news/update-to-articleThe new guy is still in his teens, played sports in high school, and is preparing for the Navy SEAL program. The "older guy" is 23 years old, spent his high school years playing multiple sports, and continued wrestling through college. During the off-season, he practiced swimming, treading, and getting comfortable in the water. My involvement with the "older guy" was to fine-tune his swimming, to be honest. He had all the other scores on PST, longer runs, rucks, swims with fins, lifting, etc...He continued: "Before I even considered going to SEAL training," the wrestler who can swim said, "I was working out hard since 12 years old, getting my ass beat by high school wrestlers." My life was practicing, lifting, running (for other sports), and cutting weight during the wrestling season. I always kept in shape and spent the summer preparing for football season. I just lifted more and ran faster for that season. At the end of his story, he said the phrase, "I have spent many years living in the "pain cave."See more great training ideas at https://www.stewsmithfitness.com in the form of free articles, free APP, and books, ebooks, and online coaching too.Find more about our programs at our social media:Facebook    Instagram  TikTok  Youtubehttp://www.facebook.com/stewsmith182http://www.instagram.com/stewsmith50https://www.tiktok.com/@stewsmith50https://www.youtube.com/stew50smithGo to https://www.stewsmithfitness.com and use LIVE15 and save 15% on the store purchases
