If you follow ultrarunning, you've probably heard the name Caleb Olson recently. In 2025, he broke through in a big way, winning the Western States 100 in 14:11:25, the second-fastest time ever on that iconic course. But his rise wasn't sudden. Raised in the Seattle area, Caleb was an All-ASUN runner at Liberty University, with PRs of 3:51 in the 1500m and 29:11 in the 10,000m. He entered the ultra world in 2018 and has built his career on quiet consistency and smartcoaching. Now running for the Nike ACG team, working full-time as a software developer, and adjusting to life as a new dad, Caleb is hitting his stride. In the last two years, he's racked up major results. In 2023 he got his Golden Ticket at the Grindstone Ultramarathon; in 2024 he came in 5th at Western States in his debut, while also securing 2nd at the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail 85K; and then in 2025 he set a course record during his win at Transgrancanaria in a time of 12:17:25.This led to his historic victory at Western States this past July.Trained by Jack Kuenzle and shaped by a background in mountaineering and triathlon, Caleb has become one of the most versatile and mentally tough athletes on the trail scene today. In today's conversation, Caleb takes me through his win at Western States, all that went into it, how he handles doubts and builds confidence, his crazy NIKE shirt he wore that broke the internet, being a new dad, what is next for him, and so much more.Tap into the Caleb Olson Special. The 2025 Western States delivered drama from the start, with an unprecedented dozen elite men charging out 13 minutes ahead of course record pace just 10 miles in. Our panel examines how the race has fundamentally changed—from NASCAR-style aid station pit stops (now averaging under 30 seconds versus 3 minutes in 2019) to the complex cooling strategies employed in the notorious canyons. We celebrate Abby Hall's remarkable comeback victory after a devastating injury, running virtually solo from start to finish against seasoned competitors. Meanwhile, Caleb Olson's distinctive "fishnet" cooling garment became the talk of ultrarunning social media while powering him to a dominant win. Chris Myers delivered the third-fastest time in race history, while Killian Jornet returned after 14 years to secure third place. The conversation turns provocative as we debate whether Western States has been "solved" through nutrition, cooling techniques, and gear innovations. Should pacers be banned for elite competitors to preserve the mano-a-mano nature of competition? Should crew sizes be limited to level the playing field between locals and international competitors?Whether you're training for your first ultra or simply fascinated by what drives humans to run 100 miles through punishing terrain, this episode offers rare insights into the sport's evolution and the extraordinary athletes pushing its boundaries. As we conclude—the mythical 14-hour barrier looks increasingly breakable, showing just how far ultrarunning has come.Join us for more ultrarunning analysis, race previews, and training discussions on future episodes of the Hobby Jogger podcast!
In this conversation, Matt Chittim interviews Jack Kuenzle, focusing on his work with athlete Caleb Olson, who recently won the Western States 100. They discuss Caleb's journey to becoming a champion, the training strategies employed, and the importance of mental strength in racing. Jack shares insights into his coaching process, the significance of structured training, and the unique attributes that contribute to Caleb's success. The conversation also touches on Jack's own athletic background and his philosophy on staying current as a coach.

Western States 100 ended in a DNF at mile 62. It's partially the normal story of a race that didn't go to plan due to simple errors with hydration leading to a cascade of physical issues. But it's also a lot more complex than that, like life is always more complex than the simple narratives. This episode tries to share the complex story while it's still raw.We talk about anxiety, fear, shame, and embarrassment. We also talk about love, perseverance, and moving through the crap. It's just running. But it's also so much more.Thank you for being here for all of it! We experienced so much love in a tough week.We also talked about the magic of the race, breakthrough performances by Abby Hall and Caleb Olson, and even getting to share miles with Kilian Jornet!Your story matters. They explore how Jim Walmsley's absence opens the door for new contenders and dive into key strategies around heat training and nutrition. The trio analyzes top runners like David Roche and Kilian Jornet, then draft their fantasy teams with hot takes and bold predictions. The episode wraps with final thoughts and sleeper picks for the most iconic ultra of the year.
We're here! It's race week for the Western States 100. This episode talks through how we're feeling before the moonshot. Hopefully there are helpful similarities to all of the big, scary things in your lives! We also break down a new study that feels like the Manhattan Project of sports science, testing "replicability" in the field. You know it's serious when there are 99 authors! It found low replicability rates, particularly related to effect size, with massive implications for how we think about interpreting research. Finally, we answer a question about building belief in life. Thank you so much for being here along the journey! A year ago, this would have seemed unthinkable. But with the love and support of so many people lifting us up, here's what we've learned in that time:All big scary goals are unthinkable before they happen.Training is the test, and racing is the celebration. Our favorite episodes involve answering listener questions in a "no secrets" style. That means we might be right, we might be wrong, but we'll always be honest (and hairy!).We started with a game theory analysis on how we think this year's Western States 100 will play out. This is the type of conversation that athletes have before every race, but they usually wouldn't play it out in public. We can check our work in 2 weeks! And then we broke down tons of great questions! Topics: what drives us, messages from our younger selves, The Feed's new high carb mix that is resetting the cost curves, responders and non-responders to passive heat, going for it at the back of the pack, diagnosing and improving offsets between climbing and flats, adding passive heat v. adding more training, whether you need heat training in the summer, a couple hypotheticals on road and track athletes coming to trails, a spicy hypothetical on Kilian Jornet, adding weight vest training, balancing competition with self-acceptance, sub-ultra v. ultra for making the sport more accessible, getting into coaching, and the popularity of Park Run in the UK v. the US.May your legs be carbed-up and may your hairs not be given names on a podcast. The best moment of our lives happened last week. It's not the baby. It's a social media mention from the GOAT Kilian Jornet. And we brought that celebration energy to this awesome episode! The main study was on the types of training that leads to faster marathon times, looking at 150,000 datapoints. With findings that overlap with other studies, we can start to outline the most direct way to make running faster (and more fun). The remainder of the episode was in our classic "No Secrets" Q+A style! Topics: what makes David think that he can compete for the win at Western States, our initial review of the Wahoo Run Treadmill, whether high carb fueling is for everyone (hint: yes, mostly), whether VERY high carb approaches might be the next frontier (hint: we hope not), improving Zone 2, heart rate zones in cross training, incorporating cross training for the first time, structuring recovery intervals on strides, our thoughts on SWAP Media expansion, the beer 2-mile record, and a beautiful Listener Corner message. We're calling this the "You Brought It On Yourself" episode. Listen for a hilariously honest call-out near the end. We love you all! HUZZAH! We celebrated a wild year with a "No Secrets" Q+A episode! This one is full of fascinating topics, mixing science, theory, and hot takes into the perfect holiday stew. The questions all came from podcast listeners on the following topics: how to think about gut training, Zone 2 heart rate and how terrible some online calculators are for athletes of all levels, our favorite speed workouts to gauge progress over time, incorporating cross training into long-term growth, specific guidelines for cross training like cadence and effort, adapting and performing at altitude, consistency during the holidays and why it's ok to take downtime, supershoes and ankle stability, how we think about running cadence and form, Kilian's tempo-after-intervals workout, and our current thinking on the 2025 Western States 100. It's such a gift to record this podcast each week. Thank you all for everything, and happy holidays! You are the most special goats to us.
