Today, we are speaking with retired LT Shane McKeon as he is about to embark on his journey to complete the Western States 100. Shane is a seasoned endurance athlete and dedicated student of leadership and performance. He joined the ranks of the FDNY in the aftermath of September 11th and spent many years serving as a firefighter in Engine Company 84 and Ladder Company 34 in Washington Heights before being promoted to Lieutenant. Throughout his career, Shane served as a lead fitness instructor at the FDNY Probationary Firefighter School, a program manager for the FDNY's A Day in the Life of a Firefighter program in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and as a member of the FDNY's First Line Supervisor Training Program. Before joining the FDNY, Shane played Division I baseball and spent two seasons in professional baseball. Since becoming a member of the department, he has completed 25 marathons, numerous ultra-distance open-water swims, and two Ironman triathlons. As we record this Shane will be competing in the Western States 100, the world's oldest and most prestigious 100-mile endurance race.

WESTERN STATES 100, MARATHON DU MONTBLANC, GTPE, GARMIN EPIC TRAIL Y TRAIL BRONCHALES. Gran fin de semana el vivido en las carreras de montaña por medio mundo: Desde California hasta los Alpes, pasando por Picos de Europa, el Pirineo catalán y la Sierra de Albarracín, el trail nos ha dejado actuaciones memorables, récords, abandonos inesperados y carreras donde volvió a demostrarse que la montaña siempre termina poniendo a cada uno en su sitio. Ha sido uno de esos fines de semana capaces de resumir toda la riqueza de nuestro deporte, con pruebas radicalmente distintas pero unidas por la misma pasión por correr entre montañas. La gran referencia internacional volvió a ser la Western States 100, donde el calor extremo endureció todavía más una carrera ya legendaria. La retirada de Kilian Jornet antes del ecuador de la prueba fue una de las grandes noticias del fin de semana, dejando vía libre para una edición marcada por el dominio de los especialistas estadounidenses y por una batalla de enorme desgaste hasta Auburn. Mientras tanto, en Chamonix, el Marathon du Mont-Blanc volvió a confirmar su condición de gran clásico europeo con la tercera victoria de Rémi Bonnet y una exhibición histórica de Tove Alexandersson, que pulverizó el récord femenino para acabar además undécima absoluta frente a centenares de corredores masculinos. Kilian Jornet is the greatest trail and mountain runner of all time. He joins the show coming off a 3rd place finish at last year's event, certainly questing for a victory in this year's edition. He is the 2011 champion of Western States and debuted here in 2010 - the famous “Unbreakable” edition where he dueled with Geoff Roes and Anton Krupicka all day before landing on the podium in 3rd. These are the times! Hans Troyer joins us in the studio for his first-ever (longer form) appearance on the Singletrack Podcast. Hans has had an exciting recent build to Western States, including a win at the Twisted Fork 30K and a training camp in Flagstaff with the Hoka team. Beyond that, on the biggest stages of the sport, he is on a roll demonstrating his greatness with a course record victory at the Black Canyon 100K back in February and an impressive win at JFK late last year. Hans took 8th place at his debut here last June, but expectations are higher for his return.
