Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! An Interview with Derek Isetti Derek Isetti, PhD, CCC-SLP earned his bachelor of arts in drama with an emphasis in musical theater from University of California, Irvine in 1996. After traveling the country in four national tours and performing in the musical Cabaret on Broadway, Derek returned to school and in 2008 he earned his master of science in Speech-Language Pathology from University of the Pacific. He later earned his doctor of philosophy in Speech and Hearing Sciences from University of Washington, studying voice disorders under the mentorship of Dr. Tanya Eadie. He joined the Pacific faculty in 2014 and is currently serving as Department Chair. In the Fall of 2023, he returned to school to pursue an MSW degree in hopes of becoming a psychotherapist. How therapy students can balance academic and personal life Derek shares how his personal circumstances, being single, working in academia, and attending a state university for affordability—helped shape his path. Some challenges and surprises on the path to becoming a therapist He discusses the variability in program lengths (some social work programs are only 1 year, for example), California's unique licensure process for social workers, and the tension between broad social work education and specialized psychotherapy training. How current events and technology are addressed in therapy grad school Derek highlights the integration of national events and teletherapy technology into his program and the importance of addressing these topics with clients and students. Navigating Real Estate Challenges: Insights from Dan and Kaelee from Open the Gate Show Join Kaelee, a dedicated real estate agent from Sacramento County, and Dan, a partner at Finley Home Services, as they share their experiences and insights in the real estate industry. In this engaging episode, Kaelee talks about overcoming market challenges, her career path, and how she finds joy in helping clients buy and sell homes. Dan provides his perspective on pest control, home inspections, and the importance of consistency and hard work. Together, they also discuss their podcast 'Open the Gate,' which aims to offer transparency and practical advice for success in real estate. Whether you're a seasoned agent or new to the industry, this episode is packed with valuable information and inspiring stories. Kaelee has been soaking up the Sacramento sun since 1990, and after college, she spread her wings and headed to the glitz and glamour of L.A. There, she dabbled in all the classic Hollywood hustles: acting, modeling, and perfecting her restaurant tray-balancing skills. But just when she thought she might star in a blockbuster (or at least get a killer Yelp review), fate swooped in and she was recruited by a hard money lender in Calabasas. Little did she know, this would be the plot twist that set her on her real estate journey. Fast forward to 2017: Kaelee returns to her Sacramento roots and dives headfirst into business development for a new brokerage called Answer Home Loans. Spoiler alert: they're now the biggest mortgage broker in the Sacramento area. She snagged her real estate license in 2018 and added another chapter by exploring the world of title sales for seven years, soaking up knowledge like a sponge. But in 2024, Kaelee decided it was time to stop being the sidekick and become the hero of her own real estate story. With full throttle ambition, she's now betting on herself, helping people find their dream homes, and living her best Sacramento life. Dan was born in Half Moon Bay, CA, college in Denver where I met my wife (Marina). Moved back to Northern CA for a few years then to Kansas City for 6 years and have been back in the Greater Sac area for the past 12 years. A proud father of 2 incredible kids (Kaleigh & Luccas), an avid sports fan, coach, partner at Finley Home Services and co-host of the Open the Gate Podcast! Tirelessly passionate about building long standing deep relationships and business growth!

As we tend toward summer's end, with end of summer and fall events and celebrations perhaps in mind, maybe even winter events in the planning, we turn this week to floristry and how and where it intersects with sustainability – and as our guest today shares, with thoughtfulness. British floral designer Shane Connolly is well-known for his world-class floristry and floral design, which gracing several weddings within the British Royal Family and the recent coronation of King Charles. And I always hoped I could kick that emphasis off with Dr. Power.I teach an Ecogeomorphology module in one of our classes here at HEC and I always lead that with the Eel river story she shares About 20 minutes into this episode. That Eel river story was one of the early influences that got me interested in the ecological interactions with river mechanics processes.I also asked Mary about a couple of Ecological models and categories, that have corollaries in geomorphology.  So we talked about disturbance, alternative stable states as well as the Box model and the Ideal Free Distribution, which are just really helpful ideas for anyone who is interested in rivers.Dr. Power was induced into the National Academy of Sciences in 2012.Links: Serengeti Rules:     https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/serengeti-rules-dhbtnm/19906/Disturbance and Recover of Algal Assemblage on OK Stream         https://www.jstor.org/stable/2425975Resource Enhancement: Armored Catfish, Algae, and Sediment     https://www.jstor.org/stable/1937361Episode Photo: Eel RiverThis series was funded by the Regional Sediment Management (RSM) program.Stanford Gibson (HEC Sediment Specialist) hosts.Mike Loretto edited the episode and wrote and performed the music.Video shorts and other bonus content are available at the podcast website:https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rastraining/latest/the-rsm-river-mechanics-podcast...but most of the supplementary videos are available on the HEC Sediment YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/stanfordgibsonIf you have guest recommendations or feedback you can reach out to me on LinkedIn or ResearchGate or fill out this recommendation and feedback form: https://forms.gle/wWJLVSEYe7S8Cd248

Nathan Russell, CEO, CUSTOMPACKCO, The LabAfter graduating from Humboldt State University in 2012 with dual degrees in English and Botany with a focus on Ethnobotany, Nate managed some of the first large scale medical grows and extraction labs in Northern California that fed the early So-Cal dispensary market. As true operational legality remained in limbo, Nate left Northern CA and cultivated as a caregiver in Northern MI for several years, until he stepped away from cannabis, and build his first ‘legitimate' business: a music festival merchandise company, which sold lapel pins and apparel at events across the country.During that time, I spent extensive time developing manufacturing relationships in China and domestically, and launched a second business based on retail product design, manufacture, and logistics, ultimately producing merchandise and packaging for entertainment industry clients ranging from Kim Kardashian to the NCAA.As the cannabis market grew in legitimacy, Nate leveraged his relationships and staff to expanded his company's offering to include an array of packaging products for the cannabis industry. Several years later, CUSTOMPACKCO has expanded to offer a broad range of supply chain solutions to cannabis companies, including packaging development and production, branding, logistics and import, marketing support and promotional integrations. Most recently, Nate opened the doors to his new full-scale processing facility in Northern Michigan, The Lab, which offers white label, co-packing, and distribution services to the legal market in the state. The Lab's goal is to create a true end-to-end service model in which cultivators can focus on doing what they do best, while The Lab does all the dirty work of processing, packaging, warehousing and distributing productsOutside of his core mission of brand building in regards to clients, Nate is a firm believer in worker's rights, worker's value, and using the industry as a tool to right some of the wrongs brought on by prohibition. The Lab employs felons, drug offenders, and those with large gaps in their work history. The company also continues to build a progressive workplace, including 4-day work weeks, industry leading pay rates, shared profits for completed projects, a hire-from-within policy, and 1 day of PTO earned per 15 days worked.Aside from CUSTOMPACKCO and The Lab, Nate grows in living soil for personal rosin and flower, plays with legos, reads avidly, and travels as much as possible, especially to see Phish.IG: @natesaysdolesshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/nathan-russell-5b2136113www.CUSTOMPACKCO.comwww.TheLabMI.comwww.RoadTripSupply.cowww.Mikrodos.com

Dr. Maryal Concepcion is a Filipinx creator and connector. She discovered her love of being a cradle-to-grave family physician while at Creighton Med School on a rotation in Superior, NE. She trained for residency in Modesto, preparing to be a rural family doc, then moved to rural Northern CA after residency. She worked in the broken corporate model of medicine because she did not know any other option than to be employed. Then, she learned about DPC, and the bands holding her wings were clipped. Now she flies free as a Direct Primary Care physician, able to practice medicine how she has always wanted to. With this freedom, she is charged up to share with other physicians the power of the Direct Primary Care model. She will tell any and all about DPC because the model is truly at the core of how we will take back healthcare.More from the EntreMD Brand:// COMMUNITY: EntreMD Private Group on FacebookJoin a group of physicians who have decided to build profitable businesses, so they have the freedom to live life and practice medicine on their terms.https://www.facebook.com/groups/entremd// FOLLOWFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/drunachukwuInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/drunachukwuYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@DrUnachukwuTikTok -  https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.unaLinkedIn - www.linkedIn.com/in/druna// WORK WITH MEEntreMD Business School - https://www.entremd.com/business

In this episode of Frankly Speaking, Frank chats with Josh Smith, the golf course superintendent of Orinda CC in Northern CA. As usual, Frank and Josh cover a lot of ground from his early days in golf course construction and having his paintings commissioned by the likes of Weiskopf and Doak, to his current role as GC Superintendent and the founding and operation of Flag Bag Inc., specializing in custom golf bags made from used golf flags. Josh might be one of the most interesting people in golf course management. This is a good listen!
