Eyeball Records is an independent record label originally established in NYC out of Apartment 4C on 14th St at Avenue A. The label later moved to Kearny, New Jersey. They've released albums by artists such as H20, Thursday, My Chemical Romance, Humble Beginnings, Pency Prep, and Murder by Death. In 2020 the label began releasing exclusive cassette and t-shirt bundles exclusively through The Hyv. I heard about Eyeball for the first time when Humble put out their EP which we talk about in this interview. So I thought getting Alex on here would be a fine idea, he agree, and this is what we chat about: Eyeball starting back up Internal fuck ups on some releases Recording at the studio where Tupac was shot Getting help from Greg GoKart Records The Eyeball house How the H20 release was funded The aggressive lore that surrounded him Humble Beginnings Becoming homeless His relationship with Warner Bros The Gaslight Anthem record that never saw the light of day And a ton more Go check out their website for the latest releases at eyeballrecords.org. Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. It's a great gift for Valentine's Day. I also have an Instagram for it. If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. These are great for B2C companies and Realtors. Feel free to support the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon Or go to thiswasthescene.com to possibly buy some merch.

N8NOFACE has been making music for almost 30 years, but for over 20 of those years he made it in secrecy. His first love, east coast rap music, inspired him to order an SP1200 from the back of a magazine when there wasn't a single music store in his home state of Arizona selling them. For years he toiled away learning how to make beats and rap, but never showed anyone. Even when he and his brother both owned hip hop shops in Tucson, hosting open mics and battle events in store, he still kept it secret. Finally, when DJ Kutmah heard some of his songs on his brother's Myspace page, he was pushed into playing his first ever performance and hasn't looked back since. His former group, Crimekillz, is where he started to develop his signature synth punk style. They had glimpses of success in the early to mid 2010's, but it always seemed as though self-sabotage kept them from reaching the promised land. Recently N8's solo career has been seeing an uptick in notoriety and fandom, and he credits it to his newfound sobriety and, surprisingly, Covid-19. Be sure to check out his latest record Bound To Let You Down out now on Eyeball Records. Tune in to hear us talk about growing up in coyote country (not the animal kind), owning a record store, and recently becoming a grandfather(!?). -Lee --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Neil Sabatino contributed a ton to the NJ scene by doing the following: Booking shows at The Palace in Bound Brook in 1998 and then also doing stuff at Hamilton Street, Bloomfield Ave Cafe both when they first opened. He played in the bands Little Green Men, Stick Figure Suicide, Pencey Prep (with Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance on Eyeball Records), and then Fairmont. Neil helped put out a bunch of stuff with Reinforcement Records from 1999-2004, and did a zine from 1998-1999 called "When I'm On Fire I Burn & Yell Things Like Ouch and Help I'm On Fire". All this was a pre-cursor to starting the label Mint 400 Records, signing over 95 bands, putting out over 250 releases in the last 12 years, producing dozens of albums, still booking up to 5 shows a month and starting The North Jersey Indie Rock Festival.  I got him on the phone and this is what we talked about: Ryan Sellick Recording in a cabin Still running a record label Dave Weston’s solo album Booking shows at the Palace Nada Surf Getting kicked out of Pency Prep Eyeball Records Hamilton Street The Lanemeyer show at the Palace His band Fairmont And a ton more Check out the 30 band festival "Indie Binge" on November 9th at Pet Shop in Jersey City which is presented by Mint 400 Records and Friends.
