In this episode, Kevin and Alan converse about why external success rarely delivers the self-worth, confidence, or peace people expect it to. They break down the difference between gaining a result and building the internal capacity to hold it. More money, attention, status, or possessions can improve parts of your life, but they can also magnify insecurity, responsibility, and the work you have avoided.Kevin and Alan share how self-respect is built through disciplined action, self-trust, and a realistic view of what success actually requires. They also challenge the belief that there is a finish line where life becomes easy, problem-free, or permanently validating. Your goals matter. But the person you become while pursuing them matters more. Build the kind of self-respect that does not need a publicist._______________________NLU is more than a podcast. In this episode of The Pursuit, Matt Moody, Carlos Fernandez, and James Griffin dig into the part of 1 Corinthians 12 that gets skipped: rejoicing with someone who is being honored while life is going badly for you. The conversation starts by separating coveting from envy. From there the guys get practical about the diagnosis. How do you tell Godly ambition from selfish ambition when both feel like drive? What is the hidden idol sitting underneath the thing you say you want? What does it look like when envy is already working in you and you have not named it yet, and what do you do when someone is envious of you? The person you are struggling to be happy for is probably already in your head. What if the life you're working so hard to build is causing you to miss the life you're already living? There's nothing wrong with chasing bigger goals—but when success starts costing you the moments, people, and time that matter most, it may be time to rethink what you're really chasing. It's easy to tell yourself that you'll slow down later. You'll spend more time with the people you love once work settles down. You'll enjoy life once you reach the next goal. You'll finally feel successful when you get there. But what happens when “there” keeps moving? You can earn more money. Set another goal. Try again after a failure. But today only happens once—and the time you spend can never be put back. What's It All About? In Week 11 of the 12-week Summer Shift Series, Kevin asks one of those uncomfortable questions that can change the way you see everything:"What am I doing all of this for?"To answer it, he shares the story of a fellow podcaster and successful entrepreneur named Adam Schaeuble who found himself in one of those high-level mastermind groups and on one particular day, the numbers started flying. One by one, the numbers got bigger. One person was aiming to hit 6-figures this year. Another person had already crushed last year's numbers by more than double. The guy in the corner explained that he was on track to blow pass 1 million by year's end.But then it came around to our guy Adam. And instead of naming another financial goal, he gave an answer that changed the entire conversation. His definition of success wasn't built around how much money he could make.It was built around how he wanted to spend his life. That story leads to an even bigger realization about the limited number of ordinary days, family moments, summers, conversations, and experiences any of us actually get. This episode isn't telling you to stop chasing big dreams. It's challenging you to make sure that while you're building the life you want tomorrow, you don't accidentally miss the life you have today.Looking for the Links & Resources?Adam with Podcasting Business School has got it going on! EP 476: You Never Get to Choose Your Trauma Response with Annalie Howling

I AM WOMAN Project

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2026 61:27

Annalie Howling will tell you that shame is the hardest emotion in the room to name, and that this is precisely why it runs so much of our lives. Ask a group who is feeling anxious, and every hand goes up, and each person can list what they are anxious about. Ask about shame, and you get silence. She is an elite performance coach, a trauma specialist and certified EMDR practitioner, and the author of the bestselling Unapologetic: Unshackle Your Shame, Reclaim Your Power. In 2026 Spear’s Magazine ranked her among the world’s best life and performance coaches. Over twenty years, she has worked with Hollywood actors, PGA Tour golfers, self-made billionaires, corporate executives and members of the UK Special Forces. So when Catherine asked her to unpack what shame actually is, Annalie did not reach for a definition. She reached for a distinction. Guilt is something you did. Shame is something you believe yourself to be. A weed, not a feeling The model Annalie offers reframes almost everything sitting on top of it, and it asks nobody to become a therapist. Picture a weed in the garden. The leaves are guilt and anxiety, the emotions we can name and discuss. Guilt is coulda, woulda, shoulda, and it lives in the past. Anxiety lives in the future, trying to control the uncontrollable by rehearsing every possible scenario before it happens. Beneath the leaves is the stem, which is the inner critic, or what many of us call imposter syndrome. Its only job is to make sure we are never rejected, and the only method it knows is to keep us inside the comfort zone it patrols. So it makes us perfect, people-pleasing, hyper-vigilant, chameleon-like. Should, in Annalie’s view, should be a swear word. Should is the fuel of the inner critic. And beneath all of it, always, is the root. Shame. You can trim the leaves with an intervention. You can even get partway down the stem with something you read online. But if you never reach the root, it grows back, in a different form, at a different time. Shame always begins with “I am” That is how you recognise it. I am broken. I am unworthy. I am unlovable. I am not enough. Guilt says I did something bad. Shame says I am bad, and it is believed at the core rather than felt on a difficult day. Annalie is candid that this is not theory for her. She grew up in a violent household where her parents told her she made her father beat her, and her mother colluded and told her it was her fault. She believed it. She internalised it. What followed was decades of people pleasing and performing, accepting scraps in relationships, overworking into burnout, and years of self-harm, all built on the belief that she was bad and therefore deserved none of what she had built. Nobody is born with shame. It arrives through a significant emotional event, and that event can be far smaller than you would expect. Annalie describes a client whose entire path of self-belief shifted because a head teacher pulled them aside at eight years old and told them they would probably not achieve very much. The line that releases people The most freeing moment in the conversation is a piece of science. In a traumatic event, the prefrontal cortex goes offline, and so does Broca’s area, which holds language. The limbic system takes over. Fight, flight, freeze, and the two we rarely discuss: flop and fawn. Crucially, you never get to choose your trauma response. It is selected for you, far faster than cognitive thought can arrive. Meanwhile, the body is tagging everything: colours, smells, people, storing what it might need later. It is why someone can be floored in a supermarket years afterwards, or why a person who sat with a loved one in a hospice suddenly cannot fly, because airports use the same cleaning products. Annalie leaves the audience with three golden nuggets: If self-compassion feels impossible, place someone you love into the memory and watch the scene through them. Treat a compliment like a gift in a box, because you would never throw it on the floor. When your inner critic is riding you, imagine it is true and dream into it. The point is not that the critic disappears. It is that you learn to play with it. Watch the full conversation on YouTube. #134: Why Some BigLaw Problems Never Get Solved

Big Law Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2026 17:49

One of the most overlooked skills in BigLaw is understanding law firms actually solve problems. Many associates, and even some partners, assume that if they raise an issue with the "right" person and nothing changes, it means no one cares or the firm is unwilling to help. In reality, many workplace frustrations stem from misunderstanding who has the authority to solve a problem, how responsibility is distributed across a large organization, or whether the problem has an owner at all. Learning to distinguish between those situations changes how you approach difficult conversations and helps you navigate your firm far more effectively. Throughout the episode, I explain the three categories of organizational problems every lawyer should recognize: problems with a clear owner, problems with multiple owners, and problems with no owner at all. I share practical examples involving excessive workloads, staffing shortages, associate development, difficult partners, and HR limitations to demonstrate why many common BigLaw frustrations persist. I also discuss how to present concerns in a way that emphasizes business risk rather than personal frustration, why offering multiple potential solutions produces better conversations with firm leadership, and how recognizing ownerless problems can help you decide whether to adapt, coordinate change, or reconsider whether your firm's culture aligns with your long-term career goals. At a Glance 01:20 Why getting "Have you talked to your supervising partner?" often doesn't solve the real problem 02:48 The three types of organizational problems every BigLaw lawyer should recognize 03:22 Why an overworked associate may be asking the wrong person for a staffing solution 04:58 Why law firms function more like networks than traditional organizational charts 05:55 What HR can and cannot realistically change inside most large law firms 07:20 How to identify who actually owns a problem instead of assuming who should own it 08:37 Why some of the firm's biggest problems exist because no one owns them 09:21 The staffing example that illustrates how fragmented responsibility creates burnout 10:12 Why associate training often falls through the cracks despite everyone's good intentions 11:04 How firms allow difficult but highly profitable partners to remain unchanged 11:56 Presenting workload concerns as a client service and business risk instead of a personal complaint 12:54 Why giving leaders multiple solutions creates more productive conversations 13:41 What to do when you've exhausted every formal avenue and nothing changes 14:29 How informal leadership and connecting decision-makers can solve problems without formal authority 15:22 Recognizing when an ownerless problem reflects your firm's culture rather than a temporary obstacle 16:08 Why understanding organizations is as important as understanding the law for long-term success For Apple Podcasts, click here, scroll to the bottom, tap to rate with five stars, and select "Write a Review." The Republican Party keeps asking conservatives to focus on the last election or the next election — but never on what Republicans can accomplish with the power they already have. Today, I expose the GOP's "double game" and the perennial "con inc." media perpetuation of it. Trump and Republicans continue to ratchet up rhetoric on immigration, election integrity, spending cuts, and America First policies while governing in ways that benefit donors, Wall Street, Big Tech, and entrenched interests. Plus, I take a deep dive into the fake AI arms race: why China's edge computing and "Moonshot" AI are crushing the U.S. while American politicians obsess over data centers that destroy rural farmland. It is time for conservatives to do what the disenfranchised Whig Party members did in 1854 and build a new political movement. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today, I am sharing one simple process that transformed our client experience, helped us stay on schedule, reduced unnecessary follow-up meetings, and ensured we walked into every meeting fully prepared. If you've ever had a client bring up a major planning question with five minutes left on the clock, this system is for you.In this episode, you'll learn:Why sending a meeting agenda two weeks in advance dramatically improves client meetings and positions you as a more prepared, professional advisor. How one simple pre-meeting email uncovers important client questions before they derail your agenda. How this process reduces follow-up meetings, keeps meetings on time, and allows you to prepare thoughtful recommendations in advance. The exact framework you can automate or delegate to create a smoother client experience with very little effort. One of the biggest time-wasters in a financial planning practice happens when important client questions don't surface until the end of the meeting. Instead of trying to cram a complex discussion into the final few minutes—or scheduling another meeting altogether—you can eliminate most of these surprises with one simple email. By sending clients your planned agenda two weeks before their meeting and inviting them to share any additional questions, you'll create a more organized experience, make clients feel heard, and give yourself the time to prepare meaningful answers. It's a small process change that delivers a surprisingly big impact for both your team and your clients.Join the Systems to Scale Group Coaching Program HERE! Register for the Asset+Map Do It Together Webinar HERE! Check out The First 100 Days Course: The Advisor's Blueprint for a Remarkable Client Experience HERE!Learn more about T2MWorks HERE! The crew discusses how to find peace when the apology you're waiting for may never come, whether closure comes from others or from within, and the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. They also examine the evolution of Black lead characters in television and film, debating the impact of representation, meaningful diversity, and the changing roles Black actors are playing in Hollywood. Things take a lighter turn with a hilarious "What if you had a dragon?" discussion, imagining everything from dragon rules and government regulations to HOA complaints and sky traffic. Finally, the hosts tackle the idea that coming from a "good home" doesn't guarantee certain life choices, exploring parenting, personal responsibility, and why even children raised with strong values can end up taking unexpected paths. As always, expect plenty of laughs, honest opinions, and conversations that will have you debating long after the episode ends.

I'm doing this to make money. And I'm going to assume you're here for the same reason — whether you're trying to make money right now or you're figuring out how you're going to make money in the future. Most women who are posting will never make the money they're capable of making. Not because they're not talented. Not because they don't work hard. Because there's a gap between visibility and income that nobody ever shows you how to bridge. This episode is about that gap. The visibility trap. And the 3 bridges that actually get you out of it.IN THIS EPISODE— Why visibility and income are not the same thing — and the data that proves it (over 200 million creators, more than half earning under $15,000 a year)— The Thailand story: sold out events, posting three times a day, opportunities everywhere — and making absolutely no money— The relatability trap: why poetic, emotional, relatable content builds connection but doesn't build income— "Access creates participation. Structure creates income." — the Forbes line that explains everything— The 3 bridges between visibility and income: conversion content, a clear offer, and trust scaled from 1:1 to 1:many— Why the gap between the $15,000 creator and the $133,000 creator isn't talent — it's operating like a business— The model: personal brand → conversion content → one digital product. In that order. That's it.Visibility is not the goal. Income is the goal. Visibility is just the door — make sure you have something on the other side of it.

Ted Bundy spent ten years on death row making absolutely sure of one thing: that the country would never get the why.The Chi Omega trial in Miami, summer 1979 — the first criminal trial broadcast nationally on American television — was his stage. He fired his attorneys. He rehired them. He fired them again. He cross-examined witnesses, including Nita Neary, the woman who had seen him on the stairs. The bite mark evidence cut through all of it. Guilty. Sentenced to death.Judge Edward Cowart called him a bright young man and a tragedy, on the record, in front of the cameras. In Orlando in January 1980, during his trial for Kimberly Leach, he proposed to Carole Ann Boone on the witness stand with a notary in the room. Convicted. Third death sentence.Death row. Florida State Prison. Nine years. Two journalists, Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, recorded him for hundreds of hours. He would only profile the killer in the third person. FBI Agent Bill Hagmaier visited for three years and became something close to a confidant. In his final week, Bundy summoned detectives from four states and handed them women's names like currency. Healy. Manson. Rancourt. Campbell. Cunningham. Culver. Kent. When Hagmaier asked if thirty-six was closer to the real number, Bundy said: add one more digit and you have it.On January 24, 1989, he was pronounced dead at 7:16. A field of several hundred people cheered the hearse. He gave the country a count he probably understated, an explanation he chose for the listener, and a confession he could keep at arm's length. What he never gave was the why. This is the fifth and final conversation in Ted Bundy: History's Hidden Killers.
